If we´re talking about utilities the iDisenchanter is great as a lockdown and condition remove tool. In wvw roaming it´s a bit unreliable, but I used it in a few duels lately where it can be just awesome (/wave condition thiefs ;P).
Aditionally you shouldn´t forget the greatsword as a weapon, MoD+CI+gs burst is definitly a nice combo. It seems like every weapon can work in a lockdown build which leaves a lot of possibilities for customization.

When I played shatter my weapons were never fixed, I started with Osicat´s staff/sword+pistol setup, used scepter+torch/sword+pistol and ended up with greatsword/sword+torch like Vash used it.
For the last ~400 hours I played mostly lockdown, sword+sword/greatsword (dat style! O_O). Definitly my favourite set since it offers a lot of interrupts, great phantasms and covers both melee and range situations. <3

Cool build, and quite similar to something I´ve used for a while now (https://forum-en.gw2archive.eu/forum/professions/mesmer/WvW-Lockdown-Builds/first#post4076729). It´s indeed a really funny alternative to meta-builds out there and it´s effective as well.
I admire you for running staff/GS, I´ve seen its advantages in pvp gameplay and sometimes in wvw, but after more than 1500 hours roaming with a sword mainhand, I´m literally unable to play without it. This was my hybrid/lockdown approach with staff/GS, but as I said, I need a LOT of additional practice with this weapon set.

@ Nevhie: I´ve watched your latest video (surprisingly it wasn´t not blocked here in germany due to copyright stuff O.o) and I think I understand your point much better now. What bothers me a bit is the unreliable nature of iLeap and its limited range. MoDistraction + CI on full range gives your team a huge advantage since most people don´t want to blow their cooldowns in the first seconds of the fight and they usually think they´re safe at this distance – that´s the moment my guildmate´s thief can land a few hard hits, for instance.
Talking about roles, I have to ensure a first kill for my team (immobilize+interrupt on heal, if possible), forcing our enemies on one place to ressurect their ally. At this moment my might stacks should´ve reached a significant level, so a full damage rotation (GS 2, 4, 3 → iLeap for more immobilize, BF + shatter) + d/d thief + fullzerk shatter mesmer should take out at least another target. Our group size and setup isn´t fixed though, so I have to adapt a lot. Lately, it has been much more solo/duo roaming due to lack of time and RL activities.

@ Chaos Archangel: I know what you mean, mobility is really impressive using this kind of build, but if you blow your curtain for swiftness, it won´t help you stop runners, iLeap is buggy as hell and so on. I mean, you can catch up with them, but then you´re lacking the damage to secure the kill. As I said, it´s a more group focussed (ha!) build to me, so I can easily send a d/d thief or warrior to fix this problem.
Regarding skill differences between tpvp and wvw, you´re definitly right with your observation. I´m not bad, winning most of my 1vs1 fights and quite some 1vs2, but I get obliterated when fighting top pvp players.

@ skcamow and condition lockdown: I´m not a friend of condition builds, so I never tried something like this, although I got a few ideas. Let´s see if I can find them somewhere in the depths of my computer…

In my opinion 0-6-6-2-0 (I should start to use the new system as well^^) works better as a hybrid, for several reasons:
-CI profits a lot from your condition duration
-Chaotic Transference is a passive push to your condition damage
-Vulnerability stacking only helps your direct damage, while stacking might improves both the power-based and the condition-based damage
-Clone spam traits!

So I never thought of using 6-6-0-2-0 as a hybrid, but 100% condition duration definitly looks nice, so I´ll test it.

You´re absolutly right about the use of 2 mantras, in most situations, it does work perfectly well with all those blinks and stealth skills. It just feels extremly vulnerable to bursts, especially in a 1vs1 situation. I was even thinking about a build using either torch or staff/gs to compensate the recharge time with more stealth or Phase Retreat kiting. This might be unneccesarry, but I would at least feel better. :P

@ adelaide: Not using GS (or focus) makes thiefs so much harder ´cause you can´t stop them from resetting the fight. So I would rather use Sword/Focus and Scepter/Sword or Scepter/Pistol. This would free the rune slots for something like Runes of the Pack. On the other hand, focus is still bugged, which makes your original setup much better.

@Nevhie: I´ve tried all those builds with S/P and it´s incredibly strong with Chaotic and Bountiful Interruption. Might and bleed is stacking rapidly and you can assure the Duelist´s hits with your interrupts. I don´t like the cooldowns though, and Magic Bullet sometimes feels like a waste if you used it with CI.
Has anyone tested a true hybrid build with S/P and possibly GS yet? Every hybridish setup I´ve tried so far seemed to work better as a full power build with might stacks to get your condition damage on a solid level.

@ Carighan: Aren´t you hurting yourself if you use CS and Technobabble? I mean, close to 4 seconds daze is impressive, but a 50% chance to get only 1 second stun out of it?

This looks pretty interesting adelaide, IC+Blade Training is something I really like to use. The main problem for me is your lack of hard lockdown, you´re unable shut someone down for a few precious seconds to recharge your mantras or reposition yourself.

Hey Chaos Archangel, Master of Lockdown-Inspiration (even without any points in this trait line^^), I´ve used a 0-20-30-20-0 build for group combat situations, especially if we got a guardian in our roaming group for condition cleanse. Traited staff and focus are impressive lockdown tools and this build can be extremly mobile and fun to play. It´s just a bit weak in actual fighting scenarios and has not much chasing/stopping power, but in a group setup, there are other classes to cover this weakness.

Different versions ranging from 2400 to 2900 armor have been tested, around 2600 seemed optimal to me. The lack of boon remove and vulnerability stacking is sometimes annoying, using 2 mantras feels a bit weird as well

These builds are just examples I´ve tried yet. They do work quite good to help your group bursting down key targets and in duels as well. But all of them got some more or less serious problems or flaws, so I´m still looking for more ideas and concepts I could try. Let´s discuss!

Oh and btw, I want to thank all those great players here in the mesmer forum, I´m usually not writing much, but I read a LOT of threads here to get inspirations, new ideas and builds and that´s absolutly awesome.

During the past months there has been a lot of interest in mesmer lockdown builds, but it seems like most of them are designed for pvp. I would like to discuss which kind of lockdown build other mesmers would use in wvw. Shatter is still my favorite, but lockdown is extremly fun to play and offers a different playstyle. If you want to skip my wall of text below, my main question is: „What do other mesmers consider a good lockdown build for wvw roaming?“

A few points before we start discussing:
• I´m talking about wvw roaming and smallscale fights – lockdown could be used to kill the enemy backline in a zerg fight, but shatter is just faster, so I wouldn´t use it in this situation
• stats from stacking sigils and guard buffs are an essential part of wvw roaming, so I always assume that we got full stacks (if the build includes a stacking sigil, that´s it)
• if I post builds, they are usually full ascended, these are just examples of what I think should work best. In reality I use a mix of exotics and ascended equipment and it works just fine

Ok let´s start, what do you think a good wvw lockdown build should look like? The first 3 points are the most important to me:
• there should be some kind of „punishing“ lockdown trait, like Chaotic Interruption or Confounding Suggestions
mobility is king, so we need some kind of increased movement speed – Runes of the Traveler, Speed or Centaur, focus offhand, staff…
condition remove, I definitly won´t play without some kind of counter to those condition spammers out there
• I like to have at least a bit of stopping power, it´s not a mesmer´s strength, but greatsword or offhand pistol will help
boon remove to get rid of stability, protection…

As Benjamin said lockdown builds with 2 mantras (heal+distraction) are ok, you can use Decoy and Blink as stunbreakers, heal + Mender´s Purity gives you decent condition remove if you need it.
I´m running a build like this in wvw atm (so my stats are much higher than yours, both defensive and offensive) and still the cast time of the mantras is sometimes annoying. Smart players will attack you as soon as they see the mantra casting animation, so they get at least 2 seconds for a burst and/or interrupt. Of course you can try to cover those weak spots with Decoy+mantra cast or other combinations, but you don´t have any skill that helps you in this way. If I ever see a full mantra build while playing interrupt/lockdown, I will eat it alive.

I use mantras. I love non-meta builds. But your build is just lacking the tools to make mantras work. A lot of people have stressed this fact before here, I just wanted to give you the perspective of an other mantra user and show you interrupt builds as a more viable option for those who like to play with mantras.

I know I’m going to get trash talked by other Mesmer players but… Osicat, can you please stop promoting PU builds or similar like these? Where perma protection, near perma regen, heavy stealth, AI (and other stuff I wont even mention, you know you class already) just outclass everything you encounter? Making these junk builds popular is definetly not good for the game as a whole.

Haha, i thougth almost the same when I met a roaming duo of Napalm Cat + condition necromancer today (I´m glad I was not in teamspeak at this moment^^). On the other hand, this shows perfectly that the build is working as intended, it´s really strong, extremly annoying to fight and not as bad at chasing as i thought when I first read about it. Of course I would like Osi to come back from the dark side of PU and condition builds, but i definitly understand the need to make builds as strong as possible.

@Phlakez: After Osicat´s Powertank video I built an extremly tanky build myself. It´s an interrupt build since I dont like PU that much, but if you change a few traits and skills (and offhand sword→torch), it should work as a power PU build (heal and condi cleanse mantra are able to remove 6×2 conditions and with stealth you shouldn´t have much problems to recharge them):

Looks like a really solid roaming build, I hope you´ll introduce it in detail soon.

At the moment I´m testing a quite tanky interrupt-focused build for wvw roaming, if I ever get ascended armor and weapons it´ll look like this . Nice AoE interrupts and impressive mobility seems to be a good setup for roaming, although damage could be higher (d/d thief and shatter mesmer in my guild group compensate both the lack of damage and the lack of boonremoval for me ;P ).

I have never tried out mantra-heal though (would be really nice with Mender´s Purity), do you think this could work as well in a build with less stealth than yours? At the moment I´m not eager to use 2 mantras due to recharge time, but I´ll test it.

Another question: Why do you increase your condition dmg, 500 seems to be not much (I know you get ~200 from Chaotic Transference in a tanky build and 125 from guard buffs). Is it worth “wasting” gear slots for this small boost?

Back to topic, I´ve tried out PhantDisenchanter several times but it´s not reliable enough for me while roaming solo. If you get chased by a group and you need condition cleanse, MoR is far superior imho (doesnt fail due to blind, has no casttime…). But I would rly like to see someone using it effectivly in a shatter build because I like the concept of the skill.

Really good tips and advices, main problem is that I often use a condition cleanse instead of MoDistraction while roaming, so the most reliable way to stop this combo is usually not available (tested a 20-10-30-10-0 build yesterday with MoD and Mender´s Purity as cleanse, it´s absolutly awesome to set up a burst vs. thiefs but still vulnerable to conditions).
I´ve met a few really cautious thiefs who covered their melee attacks with stability and aegis from Runes of Lyssa or Consume Ectoplasm, decreasing their vulnerability to interrupt-based counters (kiting around with shortbow the rest of the time).
But if you´re able to interrupt the thief at this moment, it will help both your own survivabilty and puts a lot of pressure on your enemy. I would definitly add both skills as high priority targets for fighting thiefs.

You could make the biggest possible Charr, people with rly small screens won´t see anything if you spam 3 clones close to them. It was absolutly horrible to fight such a guy on a 17 inch screen… :P

For aesthetic reasons I would chose Sylvari, although you usually need a lot of transmutation stones for proper plant-like armor and weapons.

One of the best attack skills you can interrupt on a thief is their heartseeker through blackpowder. Coming personally from many 1v1 duels with thieves, heartseeker is THE skill to interrupt to help secure the kill as long as you can quickly follow-up with a burst. For example, casting beserker phantasm right when you see the blackpowder, then interrupting the heartseeker after.

You´re absolutly right about the interrupt on a Blackpowder/Heartseeker combo, but I think it´s harder for a mesmer than a thief. Most thiefs I´ve met use their Blackpowder to blind you (as d/p thief, you could sit in stealth yourself, so you can´t be blinded). Using a clone to block the projectile or a mantra cleanse helps, but I still miss a lot of interrupts due to blinds.

3,6k was the maximum I found on a screenshot, 2k power + 5 stacks guard leech, 85% crit dmg, but I´m not sure about might and vulnerability on target. I have seen over 4k with 20+ stacks might from Bountiful Interruption and 15+ stacks vulnerability on a squishy ele but I don´t have a screen to prove it.

In WVW d/d thieves are pretty much extinct. It is all d/p perma stealth cheese.

Against these guys I am finding a straight up zerker power mantras interrupt build GS/S/S effective. You can blow them up within seconds.

Against a d/d build you would be dirt napping eating 12k bs but it owns d/p SA builds

Are you sure about the effectiveness of GS+S/S vs D/P thiefs? I think most good thiefs will just switch to their shortbow and kill you without taking significant damage. I usually play X-X-30-0-0 interrupt builds with GS+S/S and if a thief wants to win the fight, he will due to shortbow evade spam and stupid phantasms.

Yours is a valid build too and one I have munched on for a while. Only lacking in boons removal.
Weapons. I would run with Gs only if I decide to have both decoy and blink. If not, staff feels safer.
Sword vs pistol. Sword lets you have more dazes. Pistol more bleeds. I guess it’s down to personal choice and armor. I like your WvW setup. What would you use in pvp?

I´m not playing much pvp, only to test some of my build ideas before I buy new equipment for wvw, so this is rather untested. There´s not nearly as much room to kite as it is in wvw, so I always use 2 stunbreakers in this stun-heavy meta. Mobility is important to me as well, so i use Runes of Speed instead of Traveler – their life boost would open some equipment slots for more offensive pieces in wvw, but for pvp I already use Berserker as the most offensive amulet so this is not an option. To remove boons I have to rely on sword autoattack and Sigil of Nullification. Mantra of Resolve should be sufficient to cleanse condition and it helps your team-mates as well (which is less important for a solo-roamer in wvw).
I would definitly prefer more equipment options for pvp though, the build doesn´t feel well balanced to me, too much life, not enough toughness… but that´s what I would use in pvp.

Edit:

trooper.2650 what do you plan to use quickness for? sword auto? does it increase phantasm’s attack frequency?

You could recharge your mantras, cast your healing skill much faster, dish out a full GS burst (Mirror Blade+iBerserker+Mind Stab) or create some panic with a realy fast Blurred Frenzy+Shatter on an already immobilized target. It´s absolutly awesome to revive teammates if you combine it with iWave – interrupting the finisher+target is immobilized out of range for the stomp+quickness to get your ally up as fast as possible – be creative.

Mantra heal+Mender´s Purity should be enough to survive fights vs condition heavy classes and it´s more reliable then iDisenchanter (I dont like being chased around without on-demand condition remove).
The weapons are quite different to your choice but GS gives you a more controllable interrupt (compared with Chaos Storm) and ranged dmg to chase running enemies. OH sword vs pistol seems to be personel preference, i like sword more because the interrupt is on a shorter cooldown and I always use Blade Training for additional reduction.
As you said, it´s a rather aggressive weapon set, but with Decoy, Blink (use cooldown reduction if you like, I´m swapping Master of Manipulation and Debilitating Dissipation all the time) and some toughness you should be able to survive most fights you encounter. I have not tested this yet, but 10-30-30-0-0 worked well for me (FI helps with recharging mantras, so 2 of them in one build shouldn´t be a large problem).

@ MSFone: I used Traveler runes since they were released, the increased mobility is definitly worth it if you roam a lot in wvw. The higher boon- and conditionduration fits perfect for Chaotic Interuption and iSwap and i feel well prepare for the incoming nerf to vigor from Critical Infusion.

The main problem for me with OH sword vs. pistol is the cooldown reduction, i always use Blade Training, but i have to give something else up to take Duellist´s Discipline. With 10-30-30 it´s a bit more easy to decide since you´re able to remove Furious Interruption (and not sacrificing Deceptive Evasion, which is the problem with 20-20-30). On the other hand, Chaotic Interruptions feels a bit useless with Magic Bullet to me. I´ll definitly try out Pistol OH, both with Furious Interruption and – cd trait.

I’m considering giving up 10 in dom to go for Furious Interruption. I’ve never seriously tested it. Anyone have experience with it? Is it worth it over the 15 and 20 talents in Dom? Does it actually increase your dmg that much? The 15 sec cd seems a little lame, so your only getting max 3 sec of quickness per 15 sec, and you can easily land an interrupt more often than that. I guess it comes down to which adds more pressure, the 15 and 20 in dom or Furious interruption. Thoughts and experience?

I tried to use this trait allocation for the last 2 days for roaming and dueling. Furious Interuption worked quite well for a first burst, to decrease my heal´s casting time or to recharge my mantra. The higher crit-dmg and precision allows me to run a bit more defensive gear as well (still need some Runes of the Traveler, then I´ll use something like this). Dagger/Pistol thiefs seems to be the main problem for this kind of build because their huge blind and stealth uptime makes most of your interrupts useless (possibly a L2P issue, I´m still learning the lockdown playstile after using shatter for a long time).
It was a rather short time of testing, but it seems worthwhile to spend some time with this trait. I´d really like to hear some other mesmer´s experiences.

I used to play Shatter a lot, but now im trying out a lockdown/interupt build with GS, S/S:
Hybrid
Direct Damage

Mobility is ok thanks to runes of the traveler and lower cd on Blink. Burst comes from stacking might and vulnerability, up to 10 stacks bleeding add some condition pressure. Stats with full buffs see below (hybrid version).

On the other hand… looks like super obliteration weapon is working as intended!

Ahaa, so this is Vabbi´s plan: 4 dozen of roamers + QuaggaPults = win in Season 2! Seems like a creative way to compensate your lower coverage…

Seems like Drakkar Lake got one of your experimental Catapults for testing. It´s no fun to sit peacefully at Bay just to get hit by your QuaggaPult!
On the other hand, this would explain where all these quaggans went after they disappeared due to the Bloodlust patch…

I just want to thank all those guys from Surmia and Arborstone who were duelling at the Eternal Battleground JP. Got some close, intense fights and polite enemies as well. That´s what I play for!. It´s refreshing to see that Surmia got some fairplaying individuals as well (and not only /laugh-spamming idiots who only fight while outnumbering you).

Hm perhaps it is not that funny to roam around alone if the smallest group you’ll find consists of at least 5 players that,to say it in your words, don’t have the balls for a 1on1 but all attack you and then laugh?

This! I´ve never seen another server whose guilds are so eager to chase roamers around the whole map. It´s even worse if you´re able to burst down 2 of them before they´re able to kill a full-zerk Mesmer.
Maybe all who are interested in fair fights should meet at the new GvG-Spot this week for some duels.

Im quite sure this is no hack at all – you only need one of those annoying Hammer-Warriors or a Catapult to launch an Asura up there!

[Build-Idea] Combining PU and Shatter?

Hey all,

I was thinking about a combination of PU and Illusionary Persona for wvw/roaming and would like to have some feedback from more experienced Mesmers:
Build

I usually play shatter builds but was impressed by the large amount of defense you get from PU. Why dont use both? The main problem should be the lack of Deceptive Evasion (omg, Shatter without this trait?!)

Short description:
• iLeap, phantasms and sword/scepter block to generate illusions for shatter
• lot of boons from PU+stealth
• even more boons from Bountiful Interruption, triggered by Diversion and Counter Blade
• might stacking through sigils, shatter and interrupts to compensate lower power and critdmg
• you can easily run away if you meet an zerg, thanks to Traveler runes, shorter cooldown on Blink and stealth

I tried this out the last 2 days and it worked fairly well. Heavy condition-dmg makes some trouble (PU mesmer, condi engi) as well as extremly tanky warriors.

Of course this „build“ needs further testing, but i think it´s quite promising. I would really like to have some feedback from the Mesmer-forum Pros, though.

Thanks to all of you in this forum for interesting builds for my favorite class and inspiration. ; )
