While the rewards are no where close to what you see in PvE, they are there. I have found that the repair costs decline with gaining more experience in WvW. Finding a great group to run with also helps mitigate the costs, in addition to exponentially increasing the fun factor. It doesn’t take a large group either, even just a group of 3 can make a difference in the battle while reducing the number of times you have to respawn and repair.

Like yourself, I too was once strictly a PvE’r and could not fathom the mysteries of PvP or in this case WvW. Though once I went in with a good group and began to learn more of the intricacies of the meta-game, I found a sense of camaraderie I never found in running dungeons. I know the rewards aren’t as tangible since you can’t stand in Lions Arch and show off your sparkly new shineys when you win a hard fought battle, but the sense of accomplishment and the friendships you can make are worth more to me than some set of pixels with a Legendary name.

WvW is more than how to defeat X Boss with X skills/debuffs/conditions/Ai mechanics. In this case, you are pitting your team’s skills, experience, and most of all coordination of resources against another servers team. It’s unpredictable and wild at times, which for me makes it all the more challenging and overall FUN. My gaming time is valuable, so Fun trumps any repair costs hands down.

Edited to add: I’m not sure which server you are on, but if you are on mine, I would be happy to have you join me in WvW. Then you can see for yourself if the rewards outweigh the repair costs. Plus an hour farming in PvE or running any dungeon once a day can more than pay for your WvW needs.

I’d like to second this (or is it third now?) sentiment. After finally arriving in T2 and battling Blackgate and Tarnished Coast both, I can say that both servers are great examples of the kind of server you want to be a part of. Not only are they reeeeealy good at WvW, their manner and attitudes reflect a very cohesive server community.
While I would love to keep BG in Tier 2 with us, I have a feeling they are Tier 1 bound, and deservedly so. A class act all around! Good fortune you guys, I hope you get the coverage you need.

This is what I love when you folks who run fraps share your footage with us. I get to learn more about each type of profession from the POV of someone who usually can play the heck out of it. I have a few alts and many times I find myself either uninspired playing a new char (especially at lower levels), or stumped as to what skills are good openers/finishers etc. Also to see the effectiveness of a weapon set I haven’t tried as yet.

For instance, watching in dragons video how he would cycle through his F1-F4 CD’s along with really useful re-hotkeying of those abilities.
Btw. how do you get those timers on your abilities with CD’s on them? I didn’t think there were any addon’s for GW2? ( Of course I haven’t really looked too far into this.)

I appreciate those that take the time and trouble to record these videos. They are a great teaching tool along with being great fun to watch. When I can’t get my WvW fix that day due to work, errands and life in general, I can always watch one of these to put that little glint in my eye. After watching one I always imagine I’m “pew pewing” all the folks at the store, gas station.. library.. you get the idea LOL Though I do try and refrain from actually making the sounds… folks look at you funny. 0_o

I’ve never really been one for PvP, but I decided to start participating in WvW more this week and I just want to say I’ve had an incredible amount of fun. Even though I’m no good at it yet, I’ve really been loving running around with TC and fighting Kain and BG – you guys are awesome. Seeing the good natured banter in this thread was one of the reasons I started poking around WvW more seriously, so thanks for all the fun times!

Welcome to the asylum. I wasn’t into PvP before GW2 either, but tried wuvwuv at the urging of my old GL (come back to GW2 Galv!) and haven’t looked back since. Great times!

The first Bay battle on the video was from the other day. The 2nd bay battle was last night where as you will see I can’t heal myself lol.

Once again great job to every single one from KN, BG and TC for the fun.

I just wanted to say how much I enjoyed watching your video. That Bay fight was one of the most fun I’ve ever experienced in WvW. Even if the lag spikes were so bad we couldn’t heal for beans.

Thanks to BG and TC for bringing it every single time! Lordy you guys are tough. Now every time I see an HB or PiNK tag and a ton of other guilds that I can’t recall off the top of my head, I can’t decide if I should just run, or suicide it try and give you a hug.. (I usually pick suicide cuz it’s way more fun.) I have learned a lot just from playing this week and hope to continue to do so. THIS is what WvW is supposed to look like, imo.

The Yak Lord approves of the planning. He bestows fuzzy slippers for everyone that joins in the celebration.

I gotta say, I’m impressed. I’ve only played wvw once since Kaineng left T8, but have played a couple of times here in T2. I’m quite impressed by how competitive and entertaining this match up is. I’m also surprised and genuinely excited about how civil the match ups thread has been. This is something that I really enjoy, I really like it when a forum thread talks about cookies and dolyaks versus angrily yelling at each other. Thanks to all three servers for helping to make wvw enjoyable for me again.

Hopefully we don’t run into Commander Lohan and her entourage on the way back, or we’ll never get him to stop chasing that chicken head. ;P

I adore manning trebs. That whole reach out and touch someone thing i guess. I also am amused at all the crazy places you can place siege in this game! Too fun.

Before playing GW2 I only participated in PvP/Battlegrounds infrequently. Once I started playing GW2, I was doing my usual PvEing along, then a member of my guild invited me into WvW to show me around. Since I had expressed some interest in seeing what it was all about, I went along. We joined up with another member of the guild and the three of us stayed in there for a long while that night. I was completely taken with it right away. Like yourself, I really enjoyed the aspect of team play and finding that even our small presence on the BL was making a marked difference when we worked in conjunction with the commanders goals for that area. I was hooked from then on. Especially after I discovered just how much glee one can gain from siege weapons!

As for my character, I play a thief… yeah yeah I know a kittening thief Which is a character type I have played in every MMO I’ve ever played. I simply love the play style and devil-may-care archetype. Plus the wearing of leather and really great stompy boots never hurts. ( You know ladies and our unreasoning love of shoes/boots!)

I probably spend the majority of my time in WvW yakslapping and scouting/roaming, but I enjoy defending too. Though at times it can be a bore, it’s always sweet when the delivery boys bring a fight right to my doorstep and entreat me with love songs (barbs) and bouquets of flowers (arrows). It often ends in tears, but as every denizen of WvWland knows, your bitterness and tears are sweet to the Yaklord. ~inhisnamewefight~

Someone’s ability to speak English does not equate an inability to comprehend maths and the mechanics of this game. In fact, I believe that WM has been around since GW1 and was more than a little talented then, as they are now. Simply because a group of people approach WvW in a different manner than most are accustomed to does not mean they ‘cannot understand the game mechanics’. Being completely focused on an objective that actually has a point value attached to it, rather than fighting each and every skirmish group that comes along seems like they understand exactly what the game is.

Disparaging their Guild’s ability to comprehend the game, based on their ability to speak your country’s language is… well, let’s just say it’s very rude and presumptuous.

I kind of like the “Hurri>>Kain!” idea. There are worse things than being compared to a force of nature.

I have read many threads highlighting the issue so many have with wishing for small group battle, and I think perhaps I have a workable idea.
What if your small group (up to say 7 people) could /party with your opponents? If Anet could increase allowable party amounts to a total of 21 (up to 7 players per server), and once the party is formed, it disables the swords. Call it say “closed skirmish combat” and no objectives are claimable or damageable while the players are engaged in the group ‘dueling’. Your ‘pin’ and/or blue dorito will then become disabled from the map so that physical target objective groups will no longer respond to the flagged swords in your combat area.
Unless they simply happen upon you. If attacked by another group while engaged, party auto drops and it’s a free for all! Hmmmm, I’m not really sure how this part should work, but you get the general idea. A feature that allows and encourages player communication and cooperation. In addition to providing a format to do “field exercises” for testing out varying tactics and maneuvers. Though this would probably be a coding nightmare to implement…not sure on that.

Like yourself Aufero, I’m newish to WvW and still have a lot to learn. However the one thing that I found to be the single key to getting on well in WvW and not feeling as if you are just throwing hard earned coin down the drain is finding a group of folks to run with. I’m not sure if you are Guilded or not but I’m sure you must have some players on your friends list? My first forays were with a few folks from my Guild. I simply had to follow along and do my part as they explained differing factors to me. Mind you I don’t mean a huge group either. In fact it is the norm for me to usually scout with 2-4 of us.

This way you get to actually enjoy your time spent, along with the coin spent to repair the few times you will need to. Plus you’ll really learn how everything works in W3 and find yourself wanting to go in more often. Just wait.. till you get to mow some enemies down with an arrow cart and your buddies a few times, you’ll be as hooked to it as I am now. I hope you find some buddies to run with in WvW, it really is one of the best part of GW2.

I’ve often wondered why the match-up threads aren’t separated into a sub-forum area. This way the forum section could have ‘forms’, and that would in turn create consistent formatting to the thread titles.

It seems to me it would make the moderators jobs a bit easier to monitor, since they wouldn’t have to wade through elevndyzillion threads about which thing is ruining WvW this week.

This is about the fifth time I have begun a post here, but I didn’t feel I had enough experience in WvW to speak to any of the deeper issues and trends about it. However, I realized that being a fairly new player in WvW puts me in the position of being able to see something that perhaps those of you highly immersed in it cannot see.

I rolled on Kaineng from the start, I’ve never played anywhere else, so please don’t take anything I say as being derisive towards your home and server. I will just give you my observations about Kaineng and perhaps some of the ‘Why’ several Guilds chose to come here and make Kaineng their new home.
(I know many of you think that these Guilds are just going to go poof after the first loss we incur, though I strongly disagree with that thought. But I’ll leave this, as it is a separate topic.)

One of the biggest reasons for this is Kaineng was already a strongly WvW centric community. It’s kind of seamless the way that we just go from doing WP runs to the Temples, joining some Boss event happening, or hopping the portal into WvW. It’s just how we play! That was one of the key factors I believe that made Kain attractive to come live in for them.

People’s sense of community in gaming is sort of like intellectual real estate. Every town (server) has a different culture, history and feel to it. In Kaineng’s case, it’s a little like one of those towns that spring up around a military base. It’s very WvW centric. Of course we have some residents that will probably never step foot into WvW, but I have found for the most part, that the residents of Kain see WvW as just another layer and experience to the game/neighborhood they are a member of.
(As another poster told of on his server) I could never imagine a time when a Commander had knocked down a Keeps door and couldn’t give a shout out for assistance. Then be lol’d at?? It simply would not happen here. Part of this is simply fate, of having so many like minded gamers wanting to play in a similar mindset/manner, but the rest is due to hard work. We have many community leaders that cultivate the love of WvW! They plan events and activities to make someone like old PvE-stuck me adoreeeee WvW and eager to learn more!
Or another way of looking at this is, stop seeing/treating your PvE folks as separate from your battle hardened warriors from WvW. Stop sneering at doing a dungeon run for your guild (unless your guild is totally WvW only) and expand your ideas of where your hardcore WvW’rs come from. They are cultivated and taught, without being made to feel less than or not as good, for not having the WvW experience some do.

If you had asked me a year ago if I was going to be going to WvW on reset night, I’d have looked at you like you were nuts. Now, I read the threads like mad and follow the other tiers progress with maniacal glee. Yep, I’m hooked All due to being cultivated and included. Think on it…

I completely understand your list of criteria when looking for a Guild. Finding like minded folks to; A. enjoy the game and it’s content with. B. Having the support and knowledge base to improve yourself as a player and your guild mate’s as a team, and C. (albeit the most important) a sense of humor and camaraderie, is a daunting task. I think if you like what you see when you come by our website, you will find many more folks to have a great time playing GW2 with. (In addition to many other types of gaming. One thing that I find annoying is the extremely short duration of said buffs. Sheesh 15 minutes?? 30 minutes or even an hour would be far more reasonable.

~edited to add: That being said, I am new to the game so perhaps there are items that do last longer as I level higher crosses fingers~

I’ll bet the Dev’s are just gritting their teeth hoping this all works like they planned. Patches are always sooo great in theory, until it’s go time, and you have X zillion players all trying to DL patch at once.
