I think they can do a similar thing for bun guards as they did for D/D ele: change purging flame so that you get the main burns when cast but then only 1 stack when crossing. This allows burn guard to still work somewhat in high tier PvP (where it is balanced) but allow low tier PvP not to get smashed as much.

Hi all

With the expansion coming very very soon, I’m doing my last attempts at theory crafting before putting my hands on the chronomancer. While I have seen/discussed/made good roaming chrono (essentially the usual roaming mesmer but with the 3rd traitline being chrono) and good bunker chrono, I am still not sure about a more intermediate “team fighter” chrono. Essentially a build able to survive in a PvP zerg (so rather tanky but not bunkerish) while inflicting serious sustained damage. Something like a “celestial” or “soldier” type build.

My problem is essentially the “sustained damage” part. Anyone has a good suggestion?

Matchmaking busted

If there was build template I would swap more often. But I have a very slow map loading, so I usually arrive on the match about 10s before it starts, hardly time to switch build.

Restricting by classes does not make sense in gw2. A burn guardian is not a bunker guardian, a power necro is not a cele necro nor a MM necro… You could have a full guardian team and still do fine if the builds were chosen accordingly. This includes maybe going away from the meta to fill a role that is missing in your team. Usually a build is not meta because another class can do it better, but that does not mean this build is bad.

Now some classes just don’t work that well, for example thief, because they currently don’t have the necessary build diversity to play different roles. For example, the bunker thief… does not quite work yet (maybe daredevil will end up fixing that?). But I would prefer the balance team to fix that instead of trying to make an algorithm to restrict classes in the matchmaking.

So much for playing a Reaper on day one.

Necromancer are excellent duelists. Also in WvW (that is the subject right?) you can basically take any fight with a full LF thanks to ambient creatures.

So necro is not a worthless roamer. They just live more dangerously than others. If you look, only stealth allows (near-)100% safe disengage, so with this, only thieves and mesmer (and to some extent engineer or trap rangers) would qualify as good roamers.

Reaper is a bit better on this respect. They have built in stability and one short CD dash. Not great, but better.

I would love a shorter cast time. I often try to use it as area denial or to prevent an enemy escape, but the time for it to cast and the enemy has already passed the barrier… 0.5s or at least 0.75s would be great.

Since you mentioned “mesmer is OP in 1v1”, I’d like to add that many professions have very good dueling builds. Necro in general is a beast in 1v1 (especially if he starts with life force). D/D elementalists… well they are D/D elementalists. I won’t go through all of them, because I don’t know all of them, but I really think mesmer is not necessarily OP in 1v1. It is one of the good dueling spec. But for sure, outside of small skirmishes, mesmer is currently fairly subpar.

But in any case, the technology just means you can change target mid-cast. If you don’t, it will behave as it did before, including following stealthed players.

I think the reveal makes sense considering the usual dual nature of glamours (and mesmer). Also it would be our only reveal, which would make this skill more attractive and have a clear niche.

Stun on daze

Needs trait confounding suggestion + a source of daze. The “meta” build has only one daze: the shatter. Because of that, this cannot be used to setup a shatter. Some alternative builds use staff or mantra of distraction (MoD), but that pretty much means giving up stealth (staff means no sword/torch, MoD means no decoy). So while strong, this alternative means a strong loss of defense. Hence why this line:

Mantra zerker build is almost impossible to kill and yet 100-0 people.

is just not true.

massive shatter dmg (with right spec and setup)

One should hope so since we have the lowest damage of all classes outside of shatters (see PvE).

perma torment

We do have torment on condi builds. This is one of our main conditions with confusion. We apply it very slowly with the scepter AA, or on a “burst” on scepter 2 or shatters. Scepter 2 is easily countered because it only applies torment if the mesmer successfully block you. So if you don’t attack during the block, no torment for you. The shatters are again the main source of damage for mesmers so they should be powerful. Yet, condi shatters are far from being as bursty as power shatters, hence the fact that you rarely see condi mesmer in competition.

ranged

Mesmer burst is not ranged. While the greatsword is a ranged weapon, we get most of our damage with a shatter burst which is best done in melee range because there is a shatter on the mesmer himself. Also if done from range, you have plenty of time to see the clones running towards you and dodging them (dodge towards the clones, not backwards).

not nearly as much especially since PU nerf. Also, as I mentioned above, stealth is only one possible mesmer build, not a core aspect like thief.

tankier

The standard power shatter Mesmer is not tanky. Its defense come from mobility and in some builds stealth. As any build running marauder/berserker, you can kill burst it down very fast. Just remember that a mesmer with decent reflexes will probably blink away to save himself, but blink has a cooldown.

reflect for days

That is funny, because none of the commonly taken builds have any major source of reflects. Yes we have a lot of possible sources of reflects, but rarely take any. The only reflect in the PU build comes from the 2s reflection on blink… 2s on a 24s CD is hardly reflect for days. You may see some people taking “mirror” as a heal, in which case you have more. But mirror is a weaker heal, so this has a price. Finally, we can take reflect on evade (Evasive Mirror) but then we don’t have the blinds on shatter. Again, high price. (I don’t mention running feedback or focus because… I don’t think anyone does that)

stack might

The standard builds has 1 skill which stacks might (Mirror Blade). That’s the one most mesmers use just before a shatter burst. Dodge it and you’ll most likely dodge the whole shatter. Problem solved.

sustain dps is one of the best in open field (phantasm dealing quite some dmg)

even with phantasms, the mesmer happens to have the lowest DPS of all classes (again see PvE). However, this is assuming you can keep 3 phantasms up… Not going to happen in PvP considering they die in 2 shots (3k HP). So phantasms are not sustained DPS, but again burst DPS, and not nearly as much burst as a shatter. Also the PU build has a worthless torch phantasm. The only remotely damaging is thus the one from greatsword. Also phantasms have a 1s cast and then a bit of delay before the attack actually happens. Plenty of time to interrupt/blind/dodge.

Remember that mind wrack has a 12s CD and the phantasm even higher. So you don’t have so many skills to dodge.

The added blind on shatter is a bit too much.

Again, the shatters can be avoided (and so is the blind). And they have fairly long CD, the shortest being mind wrack every 12s.

The fact that someone mains mesmer does not mean he plays only mesmer. Any good player has played basically all other professions because it is the best way to learn to counter them. Since you said you started playing with mesmers, I encourage you to continue and you will see all its weaknesses and will learn to counter them.

Small hint: as a mesmer, I hate blinds and entangle…

Ok, I think I have gone through all your assertions and explained why they were false or exaggerated. Mesmer is not OP. It is in a good spot for its role (the roaming role). Yet if a team takes only one roamer, this will be a thief. That is why you don’t see that many mesmers in high tier PvP, and certainly very very rarely more than 1 while you do see 2 elementalists (that’s a minimum), and sometimes 2 guardians, 2 warriors, 2 engineers etc…

Technically “it makes sense” since in PvP most likely everything will be unlocked. So it will only matter if you play another game mode (PvE and WvW) in which case… just get the hero points in this game mode.

Aren’t they taken anyway simply for boon removal? I don’t think chronomncer boon rip would be enough.

It is clear necro has one of the best boon rip of all professions. However, because they designed raids so that you don’t need a specific class, the amount of boon rip “necessary” cannot be too high. One thing they can do is having a lot of boons which are “preferably” removed, in which case necro would be fine, but other classes can still work.

I don’t see how spamming 2 is more boring in PvE than the current meta which is spamming 1. Oh wait, actually the current necro meta is to reroll as an elementalist, never mind.

For PvP, gravedigger is far from OP, even on downstates. In the current “rez meta”, your enemy will be up before your gravedigger even hits. You need more frontloaded damage like hundred blades or even necro dagger for that matter.

Shatters are unnecessary for personal alacrity. They had 2 uses, both related to boon upkeep. Chaotic persistence makes it so that more boons = more boon duration, and that transfers into higher quickness uptime. However, a full party applying boons makes your personal boons less important, as does the 50% boost from herald. The other thing shattering could be used for is ~12 stacks of partywide might, but that’s also unnecessary in a good party.

Permanent alacrity is easily obtained purely from wells, shatters aren’t needed.

So is the conclusion that you do your usual meta PvE build but drop all your mantras and all for wells? Is the shield needed for the quickness?

Well mesmer is in a better state than ranger… but that does not say a lot.

I think I am a fairly unbiased person when it comes to balance, I do not try to favor my favorite classes. For example, I do not feel bad for saying I think chrono was a bit OP. But core mesmer is seriously balanced. The burst is high but not too high considering the low sustained damage. The stealth has been tone down and is now in the right spot. Tanky? I don’t know where you saw that. And the greatest part of all, mesmers currently have a fairly decent build diversity within the roaming role (and chrono should add good non-roaming specs).

Something like 2 seconds entry, and .5 every reentry.

With PU and hop hoping that would be 7.5 second the same as MI which it shares a cd with.

Well I’m not an expert in WvW zerg fights, but that actually MAY BE too strong there. If stealth from veil stacked, you could use a couple of mesmers to hide a zerg for 6, 9 or more seconds which would mean complete havoc. You see how efficient portal bombs are there, and the only reason it’s not that common I believe is that it is somewhat difficult to set up. With long zerg-wide stealth, no need for portal bomb, you can just peacefully walk to the enemy backline and destroy them before they realized there was a zerg around.

Also want to say something about pugs: if you are in a pug group and there aren’t enough buffs and you are on Necro, you are directly responsible for the lack of buffs. Don’t bring up “well there are no buffs so its fine I play Necro since DPS won’t matter as much”, when the fact is if you swapped to PS you’d immediately cover those buffs solo.

Why would it be “directly” necro’s fault? If I play a mesmer and there is not enough buffs, is it my fault?

I think we must be referring to two different nemesis’s. Theres an occasional truth hidden among a sea of bull.

Well maybe I filter a bit too much his message. But for me the short version is:

  • Many people follow blindly the metabattle or similar meta guides, without understanding why the meta is shaped this way and without necessarily having the skills to survive glass cannon. Yet, those people feel confident enough to blame necromancers for doing no damage while the tankiness of necro allows it to keep the damage even when things go wrong for others.
  • A PUG will not break speed clear records. So the lower DPS that a necro brings will not make a huge difference in the final time of the dungeon. You may actually loose more time waiting for the specific class you want than if you played immediately with the necro.
  • a few details: “ice bow too strong” (especially on large hotbox enemies or with line casting), “time warp at the end except if fight is short enough”, “prebuffing/corner stacking (which is anyway not so useful since FGS fix) can be a waste of time” etc…

But then there is the name calling, the inaccuracies (e.g. even if phalanx warrior did less DPS than necro, it will still be more useful because of party buffs) and a lot of theatrical effects which helps making his videos known but also prevent the message from being heard.

I looked at the wrong place in the wiki, I found its hit points, it has over 12,000 in PvE & 7000 in PvP so it looks like both numbers are correct.

I find this actually weird. The developers have tried to remove any difference between PvE and PvP, but this one remains while it is quite stupid. Phantasms builds DO NOT WORK in PvP, was there a reason to give the illusions nearly half the amount of HP they have in PvE? I don’t mind clones being squishy, they are only meant to be shattered. But phantasms have nearly as much HP as clones…

And now they changed PvE so that NPC deal only 5% damage to pets/minions if they are not directly targeted. I think this is probably a good thing. But what about PvP where the only minions which really work are necro minions and yet they have a on-death trait.

The Wall of Reflection of Guardian it is much better that “Feedback”, only for the 10 second of duration and the line of reflect in the selected area.

While I agree with your judgement, I believe the current situation is intentional. Guardians are all about protecting allies while mesmer skills are usually defensive + offensive at the same time. So putting the field on the enemy was a way to show this difference, make it appear “more offensive”.

On the other hand, reflects are already very situational, but reflects on an enemy which can just move out of it is worse…

and this thread may be what started yours. On the other hand, restricting to 10 target would kill it in the only place where it is currently used. So I don’t think that is a good idea.

“Temporal Enchanter”

I am actually very happy with the trait “in principle”. The duration increase makes sense for many of the skills + “super speed + resistance” synergies well with most of the skills:

  • time warp with super speed makes sense thematically
  • veil with super speed means you can become invisible and move very fast in stealth to surprise your opponent
  • same with portal
  • null field with resistance means you can sustain the condi burst before the pulses cleanse it
  • feedback… well it’s nice to be faster and have resistance…

The only problem I see with the trait is that it does not work well because you have to be on the field when it is cast. This is absurd for portal or veil which you normally cross + feedback which is cast on the enemy.

Change this so that the effects are applied when you cross veil + portal or when you enter the other glamours for the first time (including if it is cast on you), and it would make perfect sense.

Currently, the most complains I’ve read about reaper is not its damage but its sustain, most specifically Bligher’s boon.

The base heal or LF regen of BB can be easily tweaked. But considering that Reaper is so restricted to melee AND has little mobility, I believe we should wait for people to realize how much counterplay there is to the reaper before changing anything.

The problem I have with this phantasm is:

  • it is worse the more enemies around
  • it is worse the more allies around
  • it has only 7.2 k HP.

Assuming it’s just you vs enemy, but the enemy cleaves, the phantasm will save you 2.4k (if 4.8k damage are given, the phantasm takes 4.8k and saves you 2.4k damage). 2.4k life after 1.5s cast on a 25s CD… Not amazing.
1 ally: 1.8k HP saved. 2 allies : 1.4. 3 allies (which is the max since attacks usually don’t go beyond 5 targets) : 1.2k.

And this was actually a fairly ideal case, because you dodge while the phantasm doesn’t.

Glamours….

Let’s be honest. In PvP in particular (though PvE even more so) there’s no room for them on the bar, and they offer no function.

Portal is the only exception but let’s be honest, Portal is in and of itself its own unique skill. It’s just slapped with the “glamour” title because each skill set comes in a group of 4.

Don’t even get me started on the redundancy of traiting for them -_-u

Glamours need an overhaul. Simple as that. From traits, utilities, the adding of a heal, and a CD reduction to Time Warp (even just allowing the traited CD). Some “on glamour use” runes wouldn’t go amiss to help either, because honestly, they’d need it.

I think a problem with glamour rework is that wells fill largely the same niche: “supportive ground targeted skills”. Actually time warp would clearly have been an elite well if it was not there before HoT. You suggest a glamour heal, and I’m all for it because I think mesmer dramatically lacks outgoing heals, but it would need to be significantly different from well of eternity…

On the other hand, I think null field is a decent utility, and works well with chromancer as a “point holder”.

That would make it comparable to Decoy, which is a bit much for a group stealth.

Decoy is instant and a stunbreak + its CD can be reduced to 32s. Veil needs to be cast and then walk into, giving much more counterplay.
But ok, maybe kitten was too much. Compare to shadow refuge though, which is a 60s CD, AOE stealth, 3s pulsing 5 times (so 10s max stealth) with healing… I think thieves SHOULD have the best stealth skills, so I’m fine with shadow refuge being better, but here this is not even comparable!

I would just like veil to be a skill which one could bring in PvP, and not being a skill only for WvW, and still criticized even there.

I’d personally like to have the version in the Veil reveal clip, but I guess that would be too similar to Shadow Refuge. It would work far better with Temporal Enchanter though.

All is in the title. While the target limit (or its absence in this case) is strong for some situations (like WvW), the poor stealth duration and the long CD makes this utility unusable in any other situation.

I believe veil would make more sense with a halved CD (45) and 3s base duration. I don’t see how this would make it OP in any situation, what do you think?

Well, if 8 is indeed the number of games you played, you can’t expect an accurate win rate… You won 3 games and lost 5… That is 1 victory away from average.

Yes but the thing is a team of 5 guardians could do great if they arranged their builds (in particular guardians already have both defensive and offensive versions viable). 5 thieves currently would probably do an awful job (though it would be one of the most annoying match ever…). One thief is almost mandatory in high tier PvP because of their unique role, but 2 thieves is almost never seen in competition because the class itself is neither strong nor diverse enough for that.

I believe the amulet suggestion makes more sense for a balanced game. However, I can see how this would make matchmaking difficult.

I’m afraid at the end, the only way around that is… build template (again…). For each profession, save a bursty and a more defensive/team fight oriented spec, and swap according to the team comp.

Then… try to make sure that there is build diversity so that thieves (for example, but it is a good example) are not forced to play offensively but can actually play a more defensive build (daredevil is probably one step on the right direction, but obviously acrobatics needs to be fixed).

I agree with you, build templates would fix a large part of the problem. But since they still haven’t done it while they did agree to a separate queue for stronghold, it makes sense to just have a queue for each game type (team death match, conquest, stronghold).

Whether changing the rules makes people angry or not depends on why it is done, I think. If it is done merely for the mythical balance, then many people will be unhappy. If it is done occasionally for the sake of keeping things fresh and exciting, I think most people would see it as a generally positive thing. Unfortunately, the overwhelming majority of times they make changes, is for the first reason.

People are unhappy if they feel a class is unbalanced. A change made to fix that makes people happy. But if they see a change “just for keeping things fresh” and it ruins their build, they will hate it.

I just play pve. I see all these balance changes done for pvp, and it almost always has a weakening effect in pve. Maybe not by much, but they accumulate over time. The difference between the mesmer today and the mesmer of 3 years ago is immense. Today’s mesmer would just be a small speed bump for the mesmer of 3 years ago. As a pve player, this is frustrating for me.

While they don’t really say it, I think the devs have stopped supporting the current PvE. They are focusing on raids and new fractals, and the meta may be very different. But the important part is that they promised they will take this PvE balance into account. So in the future, balance will be PvP AND PvE balance.

You have to remember that in raids, it seems the aggro is important and toughness from clerics will means you will be the main target. This may be what you want, or may not be.

If you want healing power while keeping some DPS, you can go zealot. I would advise you to still mix in some berserker to get some ferocity.

I think we may disagree on what balance means. Balance does not mean a mesmer 1v1 necromancer should have a 50% win. There is nothing wrong with a rock-paper-scisors system with counters. But that is not unbalanced. Unbalance is when whichever enemy comp a class/build is better than the others. For example, when 5 D/D ele can beat any enemy team.

Because all classes are unique and have counters, “perfect balance” is not needed to ensure that all classes are viable choices even in top tier. Anything close to balanced will be good because even a class that is overall a bit less good can be valuable because it counters another or fill a specific role. For example, thief is agreed to be weak since the specialization patch, but they are still almost mandatory in high tier PvP because of the unique thing they bring (stealth support + high mobility).

Trying to balance pvp between the classes is a losing game. No one will ever be happy about the balance, no matter how hard or how often Anet tries. So why bother?

As explained above, I disagree. If you look at the complains currently, you see they are focused on rather few classes (essentially D/D elementalist too strong, rangers a bit too low). The others are “on average” understood as balanced. There are always a visible but small group complaining about the rest, but I believe the community is reasonably happy about the rest of the balance. So balance is possible. Now the next step hopefully is increased build diversity. The elite specs will bring that, though they will also probably destroy the whole balance for a while.

Constantly changing the rules just makes everybody angry.

Quite the opposite I believe. Let’s be honest, a big shift in the meta like the specialization update or the one coming with the elite specs stimulate the community a lot. This is extremely exciting. If a game settles without changes, even PvP becomes boring (PvE is necessarily more predictable hence needs more update to keep it alive). Balance changes and new profession/specs means fights will look very different next week and I am very much looking forward to that.

Sword/Shield will definitely have a place in PvP with Chrono. Also how come Torch isn’t there for WvW… 99% of mesmers run GS/S+T for roaming.

I believe it is more like “99% of mesmers run staff/sc+T for roaming”. But yes, torch is very needed in WvW. I personally don’t like this weapon much (I prefer a more active playstyle with pistol) but in WvW, it just helps immensely.

I’m going to say something I already said… Mesmer got illusionary persona baseline. It was a GM trait mandatory for shatter builds (that is all viable builds). This made mesmers “a tad too strong” (because they could now get other great trait lines) at first, but after a few corrections, they are now reasonably balanced AND have great build diversity. dom+duel is key to power builds, and thus the 3rd traitline is very much open with all possibilities regularly seen in tournaments. If you want condi, you do duel+illusions and still free for the 3rd line.

The same should happen to VP. Even without VP the SR line is good, so it won’t kill the line. But it will majorly increase build diversity WITHOUT breaking anyone’s build (for example they wanted to make deceptive evasion baseline for mesmer, but PvE mesmers didn’t want, that is why dueling is still mandatory for PvP mesmers).

Doesn’t revealed have a shorter duration in WvW than it does in spvp?

Very little wuv roaming/dueling experience here, but maybe with a large window to fight back, trapper runes won’t be as bad as they are expected to be.

Thief traps don’t do direct damage, and as such don’t inflict Revealed.

I think that’s the one thing they need to fix if they don’t want this rune to kill PvP.

I guess your point is that it does not matter as much for them, but they still have cooldowns (utilitities+F1) so I still disagree
