Eladan of Greenwood: 80 Ranger
Elemir Swiftblade: 80 Thief
99% of pve content would be duel free, people would what be sitting outside of a fee cities sparring. I don’t see how that even remotely affects you doing world bosses or sitting there waiting for the LFG to pop up. There are multiple gladiator arenas in the game that just go to waste, why not open those up to duelling as sort of a mini game. Duelling kills time, it’s a fun way to mess around with your friends and fight some people without having to worry about people interrupting it and so on. Please elaborate on how a few people which would most likely be in one spot would hinder your pve or ruin the experience for you in anyway shape or form.
This honestly made me sad. Alot of those features would have added so much to the game, go back and look at the older trailers all of the cities look 10 times cooler and were places I actually wanted to explore. Half the cities we have know just seem gutted and thrown together.
We have an entire trait line that should be dedicated to hit and run high mobility attacks, thats what a skirmisher is, hit and runs. Why then do we have less mobility than all but like 2 classes in the game. We should arguably have the most or close to only passed by things like thieves. Warriors get across the map in 2 seconds, elementalists get around faster, guards get around about as fast as warriors, mesmers have all the ports and swiftness etc. It’s ridiculous that we have an entire trait line that should be about moving around quickly, getting in a fight and getting out quick. Woohoo we get swiftness on weapon swaps from it. That is literally it.
Before release it was either an ability or a trait I forget which but you could activate it and you perma stealth as long as you were standing still, which would have been perfect for ambushes. I wish they had left it like that.
I vastly prefer Read the Wind. If I am running in a zerg or targeting zerg commanders I might switch to Piercing but thats still a maybe. Most of my fights are in small skirmish and roaming groups so theres no need for piercing, plus sigil of fire takes care of any aoe I need. I’d rather have my arrows hit every time then have people literally side step out of the way because you can walk faster than the arrows.
“avoid the shots fired by a ranger”
Every channel ability in the game will track through stealth. I’m sorry you are so incapable of pressing dodge once which will pretty much avoid all of the damage from rapid fire.
Make it a high damage with shadow steps and a skill that stealths you for 5 or so seconds or whatever as long as you are stationary and said stealh gives you bonus damage or something. I main a Ranger but would love to be a sniper on my Thief.
Ya I agree completely with it being bad for new players in pvp. If you get caught in melee you have to pretty much use everything to survive. I had a few friends make Rangers for pvp over the weekend and they used my build which is 6/6/2 then LB/GS zephyr, hunt, wild and rampage and although they could handle them selves at range when not being attacked they had no idea what to do in melee or when being attacked and ended up swapping out some abilities and pets for more defense but in doing so lowered the damage which is the purpose of zerk LB.
I need them for me to fully enjoy the game XD, but no capes, I want cloaks. Cloaks are functional, capes are for fancy things.
. For PvP we have plenty of options, even though I wouldn’t recommend Power GlassBow at all. You’ll see many of then, so be aware.
If you know what you are doing Glass bow is extremely good in pretty much every game pvp mode be it wvw or spvp. Aside from small group roaming which they excel in, they are extremely useful in wvw during sieges both defending or attacking, especially defending, get a few zerk rangers on the walls with sigil of fire and you practically have a few arrow carts. Taking out zerg leaders is another extremely useful thing to use LB rangers for seeing how we have the range and damage to reliably do so and we all know killing a zerg leader throws the zerg into complete chaos because zergs are mindless and require a commander to function. Most spvp maps have very good positions for rangers to sit above points, such as above the gate on temple or ontop of the crypts on foefire or the top of the clock tower on khylo, while applying massive burst and solid sustained damage and thanks to pets like the wolf with fear, knockbacks etc it’s pretty easy to keep people off these places. Need a bunker on a point dead? Target him and boom hes gone.
With full zerk in WvW I can down just about anyone in under 3 seconds from upwards of 1800. Condi builds are solid such as trapper rangers, spirit rangers bring good team buffs as well as utility, bunkers don’t die, have tons of evades and dodges and if you know what your doing can take on groups of people in pvp no problem. DPS in dungeons is solid with main hand sword or Longbow for the vulnerability stacks etc.
We are completely viable, but there is still a stigma around Rangers for a lot of people because we have pretty much been the red headed step child for the past 2 years and people are upset that we aren’t walking loot bags.=
GIVE ME IT
IT’S ADORABLE
seriously we still don’t even have the raptors that are already in game
Anet plez

The PC Sylvari are pretty much all but immune to the corruption as long as they stay connected to the dream. The dream teaches us good values and the Pale tree helps us uphold these values while countering Mordremoths attempts to control us. We are not your enemies, Sylvari born from other trees however we don’t know. Think of the Pale tree like Glint, who at one point was a servant of the dragon but turned away.
It’s in a pretty decent place with condi/hybrid builds like everyone above me said but again like everyone said, LB is pretty much the king of ranged damage right now. Being able to down people from past 1500 in under 3 seconds is pretty awesome. The damage and vulnerability stacks in pve are really solid when mixed with something like sword and what not.
Out of the 2 I would pick Cantha, it was one of my all time favourite places in a game. However I do not want to see either of them yet. We stilll have 5 dragons to deal with and huge areas of Tyria still locked off. Do I want to see Cantha and Elona? Of course but just not yet.
I really wish they would reduce the amount in alot of zones, the Silverwastes has a really good amount imo and reducing them could open up new forms of travel cough mounts*cough*. I think the devs could do a fantastic job with them, give us something else to collect, like have a few for each race then ones you can get out in the world etc like in WoW for example. One game for me that I loved exploring in and still do it from time to time is LotRO. The map is absolutely massive with relatively few fast travel points. The game world in GW2 feels large and expansive at first but after you have all the WP’s unlocked it feels small because you are just porting everywhere. Theres a WP every thousand feet in some zones, yes that was an exaggeration but you get the point.
If you go by lore there’s stuff to back up every race but Asuran as far as I know. Humans have a long history of Rangers, being very connected with the Goddess of nature, Melandru as well as multiple characters from Guild Wars 1. Charr have a long history for them, the Flame legion was over thrown by Pyre Fierceshot who was a Ranger. Norn is very obvious due to the whole hunting part of their culture as well as some famous ones such as Sif from Guild Wars 1 and of course Eir Stegalkin. Sylvari are pretty much just nature incarnate so it makes total sense for them to be Rangers.
While they haven’t given much, PCgamer had an article where they interviewed either Collin or Mike, forget which one lol but it answered alot of questions I had. I believe it said beta was going to be playable at Pax east with beta launching in March or so and a number of other things so I recommend checking the article out.
Medium heritage armour if you have access to it looks good on just about every race which is nice, then the sylvari tier 2 and 3 are solid as well the charr medium and norn and the human tier 2 and 3. Or a combination of things lie my human ranger uses tier 3 coat, pants and boots then heritage shoulders gloves and mask. While the medium is lacking especially compared to all the glorious ones we had in gw1 there still some that look good.
Ah thank you very much
Is it hidden away somewhere or has it just been merged with another section?
If ranger got their burst on greatsword, No one would be complaining, at all.
The problem is not the damage multiplier, but the 1800 range (longbow hits clearly further than 1500 range if you have eagle eye traited). Unless you have multiple reflects, stealth or shadowsteps most professions do not have much counter play against this. Multiple rangers focus firing on one opponent will down anybody before they can close in without the use of stealth, shadow step, reflect or similar. Just dodging is avoiding only part of the rapid fire burst. LB #4 can be used to gain range and so does GS#3.
While this maybe be fun for rangers now to down the enemy warriors who were treating them like 2nd class citizens, I don’t think this is good for the game balance. The range of all long bow attacks (with eagle eye trait) should be reduced to 1500 (like it reads).
You have anything focus fire on one person and they will die.
Rangers have been arguably one of the worst classes since launch aside from what 1 or 2 builds, which always end up getting nerfed. We finally get burst damage that competes with wars and theives and we should get nerfed? You have crap tons of gap closers that makes the range pointless. It’s extremely easy to kill a LB ranger. Pop a block or a reflect and hes done. Dodge, hes done, close range with the crap tons of gap closers you have access to, hes done. Get over it just because we aren’t the equivalent to free loot bags anymore doesn’t mean we need nerfed.
Just FYI, over-exaggerating stuff pretty much kills any of your credibility.
Who exactly is over exaggerating what?
The LB is better but its not OP the damage has pretty much always been possible. We can finally burst somewhat as well as other classes and people QQ. Wheres the crying about 15k 100b every 5 sec or thief backstabs and what not?
Lol why would people cry anywhere near as hard about burst skills that put you into the fray?
Rapid fire is so strong atm. It forces you to dodge if you don’t have another defense method, and even if you dodge you’ll still take 3k damage at base toughness.
It’s pretty nuts at the moment.
It’s actualy easier to dodge rapid fire now than it was before since the time between arrows are so closely spaced. Before 1 dodge would still get you hit by half the arrows. 3k sounds better than 7k
The LB is better but its not OP the damage has pretty much always been possible. We can finally burst somewhat as well as other classes and people QQ. Wheres the crying about 15k 100b every 5 sec or thief backstabs and what not?
The damage and what not has always been in the game. The speed buff finally brought the bow almost up to par with the other classes burst skills. 1 dodge or a block/deflect and our damage is gone. People don’t complain with Warriors 15k 100b every 5 seconds or theif backstabs and all the other massive burst skills in the game. Rangers have always been at the bottom of the food chain and now that people actually have to use some brain when fighting LB rangers they get angry and QQ. Also If anyone tries to say we can get 15k every 8 seconds, you are an idiot it requires literally 7 CD’s popped at once to get anywhere near that. Thanks to all the CD’s we can only do that every few minutes if that. Without all the CD’s popped we only get around 8k on bunkers and 10k on light. Thats nothing special and nothing every other class can’t do. Not to mention if rangers what to hit that hard with the LB you have to go full zerk which means you go down faster than just about anything.
The people claiming that you can get 15k+ damage every 8 seconds are idiots. The only way I can hit a player for that much(yes i’ve hit a bunker for around that a few times)is if I pop the stalker might buff, the horn 5, rampage as one, qz and the signet that makes you grow(forgot what it was called). Your telling me I’m able to do that kind of damage every 8 seconds? Thats like 7 cool downs I have to pop at once to get that kind of damage. Theres no way You can get that amount sooner than once every few minutes. Mean while Wars have 15k 100b every 5 seconds consistently. You will not be hitting for more than around 10k without popping all the CDs i mentioned. I have been playing zerk LB/GS since I got the game a few months after release. This kind of damage has always been possible just not as quickly. People are just now finding this out for some stupid reason and are QQing about something thats been in the game for a long time. The extra speed gave the LB the burst it needed to compete with other burst classes, even though its still behind them. It’s not hard fighting LB rangers in the slightest. I managed to kill a few small groups of around 2-4 rangers last night solo because they didn’t know how to fight a LB and I do. They were all trying to burst at the same time so I would just switch to my GS, use the block then wolf howl, then barrage and then burst them down quickly. It’s not hard people just need to learn how to deal with an easy class to counter instead of QQing like a bunch of idiots.

I’ve been running a full zerk LB since I started playing a few months after launch. The LB never had the damage to burst people down fast enough compared to other classes. Now it finnaly has it, however you have to kill them before they close range or 1 stun and GG your dead. Now we can atleast have a chance of killing them before they close range. Why aren’t people complaining about KS wars or backstab thieves or 100b wars and so on. Rangers can finally bring a crap ton of DPS to the table like the rest of the classes. Better nerf them. The amount of rangers running around won’t last, people are trying it out and will get bored of geting insta killed by every class and move back to whatever they played. It’s incredibly easy to beat LB rangers. Half of them running around right now don’t play them properly and are just here to try the new “op” set up. I killed multiple ranger groups by myself today by just dodging the rapid fire and using my wolf fear. It’s not hard, they are not op. They have simply been brought up to par with the rest of the classes.

I wish they would have made class specific armor sets like in Guild Wars 1 honestly, there were very few impractical armor sets for rangers, most seemed very adventurer/nature ish themed especially the druid set. There were very few of the ridiculous coats we see now if any aside from the Krytan set but even that seems practical for the most part. I just wish we had more sets like the ones in the first one for just about every class.

I freaking love the trait, my dps has increased a ton. But this should not be a trait, we should not have to trait all the way into a line to make a certain weapon useful for its intended purpose which is long range shooting. That aside though i love it. Ended up winning a 1v6(all level 80) in the edge of the mists quite quickly by using the networks of bridges and small platforms to funnel the idiots. I am currently running 30/30/0/10/0 with full zerk, sigil of fire and accuracy, QS,the movement increase signet(completely forgot the name), lightning reflexes and rampage as one along with a wolf and fern hound.
With food i have a 76% crit chance and the sigil of fire doing a large amount of aoe regularly with its 50% chance on crit. Rampage as one brings me up to 96% with almost a 300% crit damage so im regularly hitting for 3-6k every half second or so just with auto attack from up to 1800.
They simply kept walking up the bridge at me so i sent my wolf down, feared them which knocked one of them off the edge, then put barrage down at the start of the bridge then just alternated between auto attack and #2 which hits for around 14k if everything hits. Ended up downing 3 of them with barrage/#2, knocked the mesmer off with #4 then whittled the guard down so by the time he got to me i switched to my GS and finished him off with maul.
One of the best things about this patch was the ability to put 2 sigils on the LB which can greatly increase the dps, then mix that with almost if not all of our shots hitting now the bow is fantastic compared to what it used to be.
rifle would be nice if it was atleast 1200, give us a bit more of a ranged option, and dual swords, off hand sword could focus on things like parries and what not
People don’t really seem to be answering the question are they? …
I can’t find the source right away but during one of the pre-release interviews they stated that they named the thief THIEF instead of ASSASSIN because assassins were trained in cantha. With the movement of the world cantha was isolated from the rest of the world. Thus no assassins would be seen outside cantha anymore.
Try looking up the youtube interviews about the thief pre-release. It’s said in there somewhere (while they were introducing steal and initiative while spamming unload if i’m not wrong.)
Theres a fairly large amount of people of Canthan decent throughout the game. It’s stupid to think that none of them have any family legacy involving assassins. Assassins could still be in the game and it would make sense, more so then taking assassins and just renaming them. Also the tier 3 medium is called assassins armor. Why not just call it thief armor. Its clearly made for an assassin type person, and aside from the long coat, it’s very reminiscent of gw1 assassin armor.
They could have just left assassin as the name. The skill set the “thief” has access to is all about incapacitating, damaging, escaping and distraction, which all lead up to killing the target and getting away. Correct me if i’m wrong but that pretty much sums up an assassin. We have steal, woohoo so thief like we can teleport and get something that helps you kill your target, again more along the lines of assassins. Thieves in this are not thieves they are assassins through and through. Do thieves in this sneak through buildings stealing things or pick pocketing people on the streets. No they don’t, they kill people.

alright thanks for the input guys, ill give that build a try
is it very viable as a main weapon, and if so could someone please direct/link a build(s)? Would be much appreciated
In my opinion this skill can be borderline useless in multiple situations, for multiple reasons: the speed of the arrow is a major problem if you are moving in the direction you are shooting, by the time you aim shoot and the arrow hits your pretty much on top of the place you shot the arrow making it useless. The initiative cost can be an issue as well as anywhere where there isnt a clear path you can walk up, you are unable to port up too, although this is a problem that affects all of the teleport skills in the game for all classes. I think IA would benefit greatly from an increased projectile speed, as well as the teleporting in the game as a whole reworked too to make it more like teleporting instead of the heavily restricted thing they call teleporting in this
This made my night, its so utterly laughable. My favourite part was “thief class needs to require more skill like the Warrior class”
If anyone considers LB as a roaming weapon…
Killing zerglings or upscaled with your pitful “crits” or doing your 10k RF on Doylak doesn’t count as “roaming”.Try dueling some players, for example on Obsidian Sanctum Arena. You’ll be trashed
solo roaming yes it blows, but if you have a small group than you can sit behind it does not, it gives a fairly decent sustained dps, from extreme distances, where yes can be closed fast but, again if you have the group distracting them its good
I honestly dont see why people think they’re so bad, the little wvw group I usually run with is mainly melee with a fair amount of cc and what not which enables me, who runs full zerk with frost spirit for the damage, signet of the hunt for the damage buff, this build lets me hit for up to 10k with my auto attacks, as long as you have a group that can hold the line while you sit back i find longbows great
Just waiting for that staff…. =)
OH MY GOD THAT THAT THAT IS FREAKING AWEOSME
“Rangers are OP!!1!!11!one!1!!!!”
Said no one in PVE ever….
I’ve had someone say “thank god we have a ranger here!” To me last night on the marionette fight! Brave little Beary face tanked the NPC immune to frontal attacks while all the players stood behind him and pounded dat kitten Never thought I’d see the day if see those words not dripping in sarcasm…. Don’t worry I asked, he wasn’t being sarcastic.
@OP you silly thieves always think you can fight my support ranger and escape while I’m roaming with my thieffy friend, little do you realize Sick’Em, muddy terrain, and a well timed KBS will keep your kitten sitting nice and pretty for her burst <3
Boasting about 2v1 someone, did no one in PvP ever…
You think that thieves travel alone in WvW…. That’s cute….. The little kittens always travel in packs, they’re like velociraptors, one distracts you while the other goes in for the kill.
D: your right they are like raptors! then need to add raptor sounds to all of their abilities now
well maybe they should’ve put more effort into the other races, fixed all of the garbage clipping and so forth. It also doesn’t feel right playing a charr when all i did for 5 years straight was run around ascalon hunting charr, it doesn’t feel like guild wars unless I’m a human, the gods are pointless and so forth
im all for this, its similar to the stealth hunters in WoW received which was helpful. I remember seeing a skill/trait don’t remember which one for rangers way back before the game was out that allowed us to be invisible while we were standing still, i really wish that had actually made it into the game would’ve loved it. It would’ve been great for ambushes and scouting and what not. Your idea would pretty much still let us do that but make it a bit more balanced.
ok awesome thanks for the input guys!
So i just made an engineer and so far im really liking the class. Quick question regarding the flamethrower which i am in love with, because well an asuran running around burning everything is one of the greatest things ever and i really like the skills for it, but it is it really all that viable in pvp and wvw later on?
wvw not as much but spvp last time i checked we are one of the best spvp classes. Sword/dagger is extremely good with almost every skill being an evade + condition, axe/warhorn is solid, axe off-hand is solid, greatsword is a good defense weapon and lets you get away fast and so on, sb is solid, and longbow can be great but its only good if you can stay at range and up high. We bring more to the fight than people think, healing spring is solid pet abilities when they work with an emphasis on when are solid.
