Eladan of Greenwood: 80 Ranger
Elemir Swiftblade: 80 Thief
I was really hoping for a sniper like set up to give thieves a ranged option seeing how dual pistols blows and shortbow is more utility but the leaked picture was a thief wearing parts of the sneakthief set, most notably the shoulders while holding a staff.
I don’t really see the issue here. You are still killing slower then LB builds. Please show me how this needs nerfed so badly.
Op I’m going to assume you don’t actually know where the name Ranger comes from but it has absolutely nothing to do with ranged weapons. It’s about patrolling a large area of land etc. Think of a park ranger or Rangers from Lotr that patrol the edges of civilized places.
However Bow builds are far from bad. Glassbow hits extremely hard and can stack vulnerability better than most classes if not all classes. If you get the jump on someone thats not a bunker they are going down in a few seconds alot of the time.
OP think of Rangers in this as Rangers from The LotR universe or even a modern day Park Ranger due to the patrolling of forests etc. Think of Aragorn, they are proficient in melee and ranged and patrol huge swaths of land. That is what the term Ranger refers to, patrolling borders and forests not using a ranged weapon. RPGs and MMOs and modern fantasy has just decided that Rangers have to use bows because that’s obviously what they are referring to right? It makes total sense for Rangers in this to have access to both melee and ranged weapons and fits the name much better than someone who just uses ranged.
Basically we are Aragorn

When your shooting into group fights people don’t tend to notice, then again a large amount of players are bad.
The only way you will beat them with a power ranger is by playing your strengths, keep range between you and use the terrain to your advantage. They can’t do kitten if you are shooting them from 1,500+ while on top of something. There are a number of places on each map you can sit such as above the gate on Temple, that gives you free reign to fire down onto the gate point as well as the channel on the other side. The various ways to get down and knock backs on your bow and the fear if you bring a wolf can help keep people off of you. On Foefire the 2 crypts over looking the middle point give you free reign over the middle point and past it a ways and so on. Each map has places where the bow excels use them and you will have zero issues with just about any class if you are competent.

Oh great now pvp will be even more of just a condi fest.
It totally isn’t already
Theres also the fact that the art team loves to torture us by putting them in every freaking cinematic. Seriously guys why you do dis. We must have them.
I exclusively use LB zerk with sword and warhorn as my other weapons. Like FrouFrou said above me sword #2 gives fantastic mobility but requires a bit of practice. You get the initial backwards leap but if you turn around really quick and deselect your target you get a forward leap in whatever direction you want. Then theres also the warhorn 5 with the added swiftness and lighting reflexes and RaO if you choose to bring those. While we aren’t thief or warrior level of mobility(oh look there goes a warrior flying half way across the borderland with his greatsword….) we can still be pretty kitten mobile. I just wish that the skirmishing trait line had more to do with actual skirmishing like hitting hard and fast then disengaging quickly.
“nerfs we could tolerate”
Really, we are already one of the worst off classes and finally buffed up to semi usefulness after 2 years of being in the gutter. We have like 2 reliable builds and you want us nerfed. K then
The entirety of the Ranger forum should just ignore Darksyze at this point. Every thread he has started or commented on in regards to rangers are nothing but 100% uniformed BS and all of his problems stem from him not wanting to learn how to counter RF. Warrior rifle will track through stealth along with every other channel ability in the game if it is started before the stealth. Take your constant complaining and lack of facts elsewhere.
Theres certain day night weapons that are just buggy as hell that I would rather they fix than add a toggle. The ascalonian weapons are horribly buggy. Some of them get the ghostly effect ontop of turning blue when sheathed, some don’t, some of them don’t glow until you auto attack or use some other ability etc.
I love that they are adding gliders but I hate how they look honestly. They are wayy to small, impractically looking so and just look kinda gross in my opinion. If they made them slightly bigger and didn’t make them look like burlap sacks I would be happy.
I don’t necessarily think raids in a traditional sense like WoW or LotRO etc are coming but I think we will get some form of open world “raid” through either masteries, guild missions or just triggered events in the world but I wouldn’t mind in the slightest.
I’ve read Edge of Destiny multiple times and love it. Haven’t got around to the others yet though.
welcome to 2015 where everyone is offended by the slightest little thing.
le sigh
Asurans pretty much think that every other race is dumb, that’s just how they are. It’s in their lore and their culture which happens to be a very large part of the game. I highly doubt it was actually meant to offend anyone as was meant as more of a lore/immersion thing.

Heres my newest Ranger, Ullr Dyrd ok Visdomr who I attempted to make look how Ullr is depicted in the game Smite and I’m fairly content with it.
I think it looks awesome quite frankly. WvW since the beginning has literally just been mindless zerging and a numbers game where you just run around the map capping things then uncapping and repeating that. The new stuff looks like it will actually make zergs think*gasp* such a foreign concept I know instead of just blobbing. You will actually be able to pull of ambushes with things like the no fall damage or stealth from the sand storm etc. I think the map is going to open up massive amounts of opportunities that simply weren’t possible with the old maps. I’m sorry the zergs will actually have toy switch their brains on at times.
hahaha ya I don’t think this will ever happen
I run full zerk, ranger runes 6/6/2 etc however I stopped using GS a while ago and have switched to sword/axe or sword/warhorn. The sword allows me to get range between me and whoever i’m fighting much faster than with the GS by using s2. It’s trickier but I prefer having 2 leaps in 1 and another evade on top of s2 and the sword itself lets me burn people down extremely quickly if i need to engage in melee. The warhorn I generally reserve for when I am in a group for the buffs and axe off hand is more for solo. Path of scars hits for around 10k if it hits and whirling defense does a fair bit in melee while destroying most ranged opponents because most will not notice whats happening until they’ve brought down half their own health. Spider and Wolf are nice as well, wolf for melee obviously thanks to fear and knockdowns and spider for the ranged imob. I also use healing spring for the condi cleanse and hot, QZ and LR for the stun and imob break and then signet of the wild for the health regen and damage boost and then RaO. I win 90% of my fights with this in both WvW and SPvP.

Heres my Human that I just got to 80. Finally got all the pieces of gear I wanted for him. It’s a mix of CoF and Arah with the helmet and legs being CoF and the chest, shoulders and gloves being from Arah and of course the black wings and Final Rest for my staff.
LOL I saw this guy in HotM about an hour ago.
While i hate the NPE you can still get to wvw and spvp. Just go through the protals in LA.
I don’t think they should make it a universal darker night time due to how many people might have issues but I would love a client side toggle that would make them darker. It’s a shame that so few places actual require torches to see because the dynamic lighting looks pretty good with them. Running through the woods when it was dark with a torch casting shadows everywhere would be awesome.
Honestly though, any pvp environment generally has a fair amount of toxic players. It just comes with the game type.

Not a greatsword or a torch for thief, would have preferred a rifle so we had the possibility of having a 1200 range weapons but we are stuck with kittening torches unfortunately.
Why on earth do people want greatswords? I can see a melee staff or a mace but a giant sword?
Because they don’t exist in this universe maybe?
Most of the hair styles exist because it has to do with the races in game cultures. I don’t see why people want everything in the real world pushed into the game world event though it doesn’t exist there.
This ^^
Most of the Humans in game are of either Ascalonian or Krytan decent. So mostly mid to more northern Europe for the Ascalonians and more Spanish or Greek looking for Krytans. Most of the more “ethnic” as you call them hair styles and what not were not introduced into Guild Wars 1 until Nightfall which is very obviously a mixture of African and Arab for the most part. I have no issue with them adding hairstyles that fit that more but to me at least lore wise it makes more sense to me to have more European hair styles since majority of the humans are from Kryta and Ascalon.
The Orrian medium looks fantastic on charr as well as the Sorrows Embrace which is really fitting for an engi and Citadel of flame armor looks solid as well. Just head over to your bank and check out all the armor in the wardrobe tab and mix and match and what not. The amount of armor that looks good on charr is fairly limited when compared to humans and what not but theres still quite a few that look good.
I want it to be an actual in game armour set. Theres been like 3 sets that you can acquire through game play that they have added since launch and like 15 you have to use gems to get.
Whenever I’m in WVW, I see TONS for rangers (algong with warriors), but I just wanted to know what’s so special about this class? I heard that their damage output is meh, so I just wanted to know.
Hi Keegan,
They are easy to play and you can spam from 1500 range without having to engage your enemy. Due to the low skill cap,this type of play attracts allot of people in WvW.
I rolled one myself in WvW and discovered just how broken they are ( and easy with cheese ).
I made a thread about how LongBow rangers are broken here:-
https://forum-en.gw2archive.eu/forum/professions/ranger/Longbow-Rangers-are-Broken/first#post4812295
Best regards
and any half competent player can deal with them no problem, how about you keep you pathetic whining in the thread you made and have already been proved wrong in. Oh wait it got closed
lel
But OP theres a bunch for quite a few reasons. Part of it being Rangers for the most part have been in a pretty bad spot for the past 2 years aside from a build or 2 but since the September patch we’ve been much more viable. Bows were trash, we had to use an entire trait line just to be able to use signets to their fullest etc. The September patch helped immensely but we still aren’t top tier in alot of situations. Also what people fail to realize about the longbow is the damage has always been possible but traits like read the wind helped it greatly. Without this trait you might as well not even use a lb past 1200 because you can literally walk to the side and they will miss you. People are just upset we aren’t walking loot bags anymore and instead of taking the time to learn how to counter us they go and whine and cry nerf. Also anyone can play a lb ranger but very few people can play them well enough to be effective at all ranges, most just get slaughtered soon as the gap is closed.
(edited by SirWarriant.2319)
Playing a longbow ranger is easy but actually being good in every situation other than from max range can be difficult which people don’t seem to understand. Classes like warriors are beyond easy to play but of course no one mentions them ever.
What confuses me is there’s cross chat in SPvP but there isn’t in WvW.
Let’s look at it this way:
Where is Stealth?
Game Modes (Sorted on my understanding of how commonly played they are):
PVE: Stealth is only useful for running (just about) You want a thief in your party for blinds, not for stealth.
WvW (Zerg or Blob): Laughably meaningless
SPvP (Conquest): Shadow Refuge has some uses; You can’t cap with stealth but you can disengage. Honestly not great, but useful in 1 on 1’s. PU mesmers, imo, apply and use invis better than thieves use stealth.
SPvP (Courtyard): Almost never 1-1 and lots of random ae. Stealth or no, thieves aren’t great in this.
WvW (Roamer): Strong, if the opponent is alone you can get a really good spike (but not better than a surprise RapidFire from a RTW ranger), and you can always get away.
WvW (GvG): I honestly don’t know this oneI’m happy to be corrected on any of these usages of course.
~~~ so, stealth is ‘eh’ or worthless in most of the commonly played modes of the game but is really strong in open-world 1v1’s (that rarely have an impact outside of winning and losing the particular fight?)
The questions then are:
1) Do we need to rebalance stealth in a relatively lightly played, unsupported playstyle at the risk of making it worse in modes where its already weak?
2) Where it is particularly strong (roaming) does the fact that very few roaming battles effect map goals matter to the discussion?
I beg to differ on them being laughably meaningless. Ya they don’t sit in the middle of the blob but if you have a few thieves flanking taking out the eles and other support that’s going to make a major difference.
I have far more warriors get away from me then thieves. For a thief to SR they have to stay in one spot for a few seconds, warriors just pull out their greatsword, scream HI HO SILVER AWAYYY and swirl and twirl all the way across the map with 2 skills. This game has the most balanced stealth out of any mmo imo. Thieves are much squishier than other stealth class such as rouges in wow which can survive just fine out of stealth. Thieves would be almost useless without it in this.
I used to use rare gear and level 78 exotics when I was 80 because I had zero idea how to make money etc. I did fine when I had that and I’ve since moved on to exotic gear with ascended jewellery. Ascended gear really doesn’t matter you will do just fine with exotics.
OP my main is a zerk lb ranger and i have very few issues with thieves. Learn to play seriously.
Shatter is probably the hardest to pull off just because the clones are finnicky.
Outside of sPvP, backstab has the highest damage potential.
With what build, my thief is a full zerk 2/6/6 and my ranger is full zerk 6/6/2. I average 13k-18k with rapid fire and 6k-10k with backstab. Do you mean in 1 hit or over a period of time.
Being a long time WoW rouge player(since vanilla) it took some adjusting to get used to the stealth in this but for me it makes fights much more interesting and you need to know when to use what and you have alot more in combat stealth compared to the 1 or so in WoW.
Op…..you obviously don’t know what you are doing if you are having troubles killing thieves as a ranger. You have this magical slot skill known as sic em. Thats 8 seconds for you to burn an extremely squishy class down. Or grab a longbow and use rapid fire on them right before stealth then switch to great sword, press 4 and you have them knocked down then follow up with a hilt bash and maul.
I agree completely op. I wish we had class specific armour sets also because majority of the armour in this, not as much the heavy but the medium and light is designed with only 1 class in mind imo. Majority of the medium armours don’t look good on anything but an engineer. I don’t want a bunch of thieves and rangers running around in these giant cumbersome trench coats. They are classes that should be lighter on their feet. Same thing with most of the light armour, majority look more appropriate for an elementalist, with almost none looking necromancer ish and only a few more looking good with mesmers. One of the things I liked best about Guild Wars 1 was each class felt alot more unique looks wise. You had Necromancers with their somewhat creepy posture and their armour, like scar patterns fit very well with the class. Assassins had their close fitting, not movement impairing armour in the slightest with knives and daggers and what not. Rangers had more rugged looking armour with only a few sets that had coats that went past their knees and even those aside from the Krytan set didn’t look nearly as cumbersome as the giant trenchcoats we have in this.
It should shoot a tiny baby ghost quaggan going wooOOoooOOOooooOooo but alas, one can only dream.
10/10 would buy
Holy kitten was it really that long ago?! I wish they would give us an option that was client side to switch back to the old one. One of the reasons I liked staff so much was because of the sound.
http://youtu.be/MiNZyQsB01k?t=1m30s
that sounds so much better
(edited by SirWarriant.2319)
Hopped on my necro after I don’t know how long and the staff sounds were completely different and well quite frankly lack luster. I loved the loud sort of wailing noise that it made. Why on earth was it changed and when?
I just wish our pets would kittening grow up. It’s been 2 years they should be full size by now.
Hey guys I’ve decided to try to get back into my Thief after playing Ranger for a while. Just looking for a solid build for WvW that uses D/D and shortbow. Any builds and tips would be much appreciated .
Tattoo’s, more scars for all races, beards etc for humans. There’s honestly not much variety between the differnt faces and body types.
I just switched to it and I absolutely love it. You can still use your sweetfx settings ontop of the gemfx ones. Woodenpotatoes made a video about it the other day that explains everything and shows a the settings and how to use it. I highly recomend watching it.
99% of pve content would be duel free, people would what be sitting outside of a fee cities sparring. I don’t see how that even remotely affects you doing world bosses or sitting there waiting for the LFG to pop up. There are multiple gladiator arenas in the game that just go to waste, why not open those up to duelling as sort of a mini game. Duelling kills time, it’s a fun way to mess around with your friends and fight some people without having to worry about people interrupting it and so on. Please elaborate on how a few people which would most likely be in one spot would hinder your pve or ruin the experience for you in anyway shape or form.
Its been said a million times before, but…
In an open world PvP server the option is that PvP is simply there, which means there is a greater than normal chance it won’t just be some guys trying to pass the time. It means griefing and ganking low level players “for fun”. If dueling was the option then there would be harassment in the way of request spamming or, if on a toggle, whisper taunting of individuals. About the only version of PvP in PvE i can get behind are those arena type areas like at the BC. Mark the area as a zone so when you cross into it, every player has their flag shifted to be an enemy and then let those people work out how they want to duel. People can stay atop and watch if they so choose and the world can keep turning.
So do what LotRO does with duel requests, give you the option to automatically decline them, they never show up and you don’t even know someone sent you one. If you don’t want to duel walk away from the area people are duelling or just say your watching. It’s pretty simple and that’s a stupid reason to not include it. Implying that spam messages don’t happen in other game modes is stupid you are completely ignorant if you think only duelling causes this. I’ve gotten hate spam in pvp, i’ve gotten random spam in pve etc.
