Towers flipping more quickly

You need scouts now though.

No you don’t.

What does owning a tower get you? Points, and some really minor bonuses that reset every week. Most people don’t care.

What does TAKING a tower get you? Karma, XP, money and usually credit towards something or another in your daily. Not to mention loot and badges from killing the guards and any scouts that happen to wander in too late.

I think you’ll find that the number of people who care about “winning”, which is a pretty meaningless thing to do, is relatively small compared to the number of people out to farm up some goodies.

The day will come when people will yell at you for defending a tower, because they want to take it back. Happens in other games that make offense easier and more rewarding than defense. “Only noobs scout and defend. Stop hurting the team.”

Except the problem I see is where he says within range of your character. watch they just redefine the range to be within 5 feet of your toon.

That was what WOW did. When WOW was in beta you could see other characters from a mile away. Sometime shortly after release they changed the rules and frequently if you were on a mount going south and another player was on a mount going north along the same road, they would appear literally right as you passed each other. The frequency of it checking to see who it should draw combined with the lower range of visibility meant that sometimes they’d be on top of you before you saw each other.

Hopefully that doesn’t happen here.

What about a random factor to the matches? Your rating, for purposes of pitting you against another team for the next week, could be Rating +/- (Rating * 0.15)

So your real rating is 1000 but for purposes of matching it may randomly be 850 – 1150.

This would provide some swing in the matchups. Top ranked could find itself in the #3 position in T1 or even down a tier. It would shake things up a bit more without doing something completely out of whack (like throwing T3 down into T8 for a round).

It’s just one of those “lack of foresight” things.

Players demanded to be able to do more things with, say, 20 people, without having the enemy zerg show up every time to crush them. I’m sure the thinking was that it would be fun to do things with your guild without 80 enemies showing up.

Lack of foresight. The problem this creates is increased karma-farming as it’s even easier to ninja towers and keep without the opposition having warning. The incredibly boring job of “scout” is even more necessary OR, more likely, your team will just be karma-farming right behind the enemy karma-farm.

People will play defense when they know where to go find a fight.

They aren’t going to sit at their computer, sign into a game and then sit around twiddling their thumbs because the game no longer gives hints on where to go find a good defense to join.

It’s lame and caters to people who wanted to avoid “massively multiplayer” RvR.

Can't really do the daily in WvW anymore

I hate dailies in general.

I don’t particularly like it when I’m modifying my gameplay, often in some stupid direction, just to get the daily.

Like I could help you out with that NPC and save you….
…but I could also really use another healer point for the daily. Down you go!

Or there’s really no reason to sit here and kill krait. It’s not worth much and I don’t enjoy it…
…but I need more aquatic kills.

I’m sure the idea is to make people spread out into other aspects of the game but if I enjoyed those aspects, you wouldn’t need a daily to prod me into doing them.

I like organized defenses.
Not the zerg waiting to see orange on the map and rerouting.
I like scouts, I like actually having to stay and defend a piece of territory instead of leaving it and letting the lazy game mechanics tell you when to come back.

Everyone likes scouts.

Few, if any, like BEING scouts. I’ve spent more than my fair share of time playing scout/defender and the result is I have less money, less loot and fewer badges than most anyone else who plays as much as I do. Scout/defenders will be the ones getting screwed when new WvW rewards come out in March and we find our pockets emptier than most other people’s. If you want to propose solutions to that problem, let’s hear it. My solution is to automate scouting so that human players don’t have to get suckered into doing it.

End of discussion.

I wonder how many points the top server would need to win by in order to avoid losing rating against the bottom server?

At some point, the way the rating system works, I suspect that owning everything on the map 24/7 would still result in a loss of rating points because the formula would require the top server to win by more points than are actually available.

It’s nice that that’s what you resort to first though.

Nevertheless, you agree with me that this change makes karma-trains even easier and therefore more profitable.

If you are a karma farmer, this patch is for you. If you like big fights and robust defenses rather than karma trains then you want more visibility into where the enemy is at, not less.

Personally I’d like to see “heat maps”, similar to Planetside 2. Divide the map into squares and color them based on the number of enemies in the square.

If karma-training around WvW is all you want to do, then that’s too bad for you.

On the contrary, this new patch makes karma-training much easier.

In fact, the entire point of it is to allow smaller karma trains to flip more things with less opposition.

I appreciate that you were trying to troll but you are dead wrong in your assessment. If you want to discourage karma-trains, you need to enable defense. This patch made defense require more effort, even though it was already the least rewarding, most boring job in the game.

Does anyone use the Charr recial elites?

in Charr

Posted by: Slamz.5376

Slamz.5376

And if so, what class?

As engineer, I kind of hate all of my elites, Charr included.

Artillery Barrage: could be cool but for some ungodly reason the range is 450 which is basically right in front of you. Also, 4 minute cooldown! Yikes!

Charzooka: 3 minute cooldown! Lasts 60 seconds or 15 shots. Doesn’t do anything particularly unique or useful. Pretty sure I do better with my pistols.

Warband support: 4 minute cooldown! Gives you two pretty uninspiring NPCs for 30 seconds or until they die, which is really quick. They can’t even handle a single random trash mob by themselves.

I love the look of the Charr and 4 of my character slots are Charr largely for that reason but their elites are awful and none of my characters use them. Even the Supply Crate, which is pretty luckluster and has a long cooldown, is better than the Charr elites.

You get white swords for that purpose.
Literally almost the exact same mechanic as “if you get close to a keep an alarm will sound”.

The problem is that there’s no distinction between a 10-golem attack, a 20 person attack or quaggans.

One thing we’ve seen is that you can simply keep everything on the map marked as “under attack” by having a couple thieves scoot around and knock on doors. They’re virtually impossible to stop, it will stop waypoints from being used and you never know where the real attack is.

Again, in DAOC you would always know where the real attack was. It’s counter-productive to hide it. Sieges with no enemies are just bad, boring PvE but some people want points more than good gameplay.

I have no sympathy for this.
If you cannot bother to spare a couple people per map to run around and keep tabs on enemy forces or check on white swords, you don’t deserve to keep your territory.

Stop expecting the game mechanics to tell you where the real threat is and adapt.

Players should not be relegated to tasks that are boring.

Game mechanics should remove boring behavior, not make it more necessary. The devs have said in the past that they used DAOC as a model — well in DAOC just getting near a keep would cause an automatic alarm to sound. The enemy would know what keep you are at and with roughly what size group. The point was to trigger big fights.

Arenanet encouraging silent keep takes is the opposite of what DAOC did and makes no sense.

I agree it was a bad change in the wrong direction.

I realize the aim was to allow smaller groups to do things without getting hit by the zerg but all it really does is let people avoid PvP. Ninja-capping a keep is referred to as “PvE”.

We should be encouraging epic sieges, not epic PvDoor with no enemies in sight because nobody knows the place is under attack.

I’m sorry you couldn’t take the time to do 7 dungeon runs. One of the CoF paths takes like 10-15 minutes to complete. I stand by my statement that playing all content = receiving all rewards. You can still obtain laurels via dailies, it will just take longer.

Let’s rephrase.

“I’m sorry you couldn’t take the time to do 70-135 minutes of something you hate, like driving nails into your feet or licking cats or running dungeons.”

I really don’t sit at my computer and fire up a game to sit there for 2 hours doing something I hate. I long ago decided that I was not going to look at rewards and instead focus on fun. The problem is when focusing on fun puts me so far behind in rewards that it starts to hurt my ability to compete and therefore have fun.

That’s usually when I quit: when the Catch 22 hits. What I want to do isn’t fun because I’m not competitive and becoming competitive involves things that I don’t find fun.

I don’t see why I can’t have fun doing the thing I enjoy, which is WvW, and still stay competitive with money-bags PvE players that have ascended items rain on them from the sky.

I still stand by my earlier post that I like what they are doing to get players through more of their content.

Which is silly if those players don’t actually like that content. WvW map completion should be to arrive in WvW and talk to the tutorial NPC or something. If they don’t like it, why make them visit every tower, keep and tall rock in the place?

Monthly completions are worth 10 laurels, I hear. I wouldn’t know because I’ve never been able to complete a monthly in WvW.

PvE players have very little to spend money on and they make vastly more per hour than we do. 5g to them is pocket change. I don’t think I’ve ever had 5g in my hand. As it was I had to stop purchasing upgrades and really cut back my siege purchases so that I could afford to keep using consumables.

It would take me 15 minutes just to run to the zone, much less find the guy. Many people in my guild are in the same boat as we are primarily a WvW guild. All of my characters have leveled up about 95% through WvW (I venture out for skill points and that’s about it).

There are no WvW guild missions.

  • Does ArenaNet plan to issue WvW guild missions in the future?
  • If so, why do you keep creating content for “the game” but the WvW implementations for that content are always “in the future”? We’re still waiting on ascended gear and barely have access to legendaries.

My guild is split into 3 sub-guilds because as it stands, there is no reason to all be in the same guild and some very good reasons to split up. By splitting up we get more research slots and can bank up more buffs. Not only is WvW not very guild friendly, it actually encourages us to split up!

The real problem with WvW: map design

in WvW

Posted by: Slamz.5376

Slamz.5376

But I don’t see how map designs other than #1 getting Green in EB has anything to do with it. Your complaint is heavily based on Eternal. And it is possible to win a match up without focusing all that heavy on Eternal.

It’s very simple.

We are in 2nd place. We can attack the first place team, which has a huge presence and defends every keep tenaciously or we can attack the third place team, which has less presence and we may take the keep before they show up (this is why they are third place, in fact).

  • What stops 2nd place from attacking 3rd place? Nothing.
  • Why should 2nd place attack 3rd place? It’s easier and they’ll get more points.
  • Why are so many matches so bad? Because 2nd and 3rd place do not gang up on 1st place.

It’s not just Eternal; it’s all maps. We can go to the 3rd place team’s borderland and attack them directly even through they’re losing. We can attack their tower and supply camp in our borderland without having to go through the 1st place team. For that matter, we can go to the map of the 1st place team and attack the 3rd place team’s tower (if they have it).

The first place team is almost never in our way. We can always attack the 3rd place team.

What kept Planetside battles so interesting was that 2nd & 3rd usually ganged up on whoever was 1st, keeping one team from ever totally running away with the game. Once the 1st place team contolled half of the territory in the game there was often no choice but to fight them because 2nd and 3rd could no longer reach each other. Planetside had superior map design.

Confusion and retaliation are fundamentally different from other conditions. The ultimate counter to poison, fire, immobilize, etc, is to kill you. Nothing about those conditions makes it dangerous for me to keep fighting and in fact it’s best if I do.

Retaliation and confusion essentially ask the player to stop fighting until the condition goes away.

Those two conditions should be removed. They are just bad ideas. Replace all confuse/retaliate skills with some other type of condition.

I honestly think you should be able to steal a portion of your opponents score by taking Keeps.

That’s….not a bad idea at all. That would certainly put a lot of pressure to hold a keep defense.

The only problem I see with it is that right now the way to take keeps is “surprise golem rushes”. Show up with 12 golems on a dead map and bam, it’s yours. It’s too easy. Really, they should implement your idea but also remove golems from the game and increase the supply cost of rams. We really need time for defense to show up so that these keep contests won’t just be about a sudden rush.

The real problem with WvW: map design

in WvW

Posted by: Slamz.5376

Slamz.5376

Ehmry Bay, at least, tends to get stuck in this loop:

T5, we crush and we go up to T4.
T4 we consistently take third and eventually go back to T5, where we crush again.

The problem is the map design.

The best 3-way RvR maps should basically force the 3rd and 2nd place teams to gang up on the first place team simply because the first place team is in the way — they control so much stuff that the other two teams can’t easily get at each other. In Planetside, for example, it can be literally impossible for the 2nd and 3rd place teams to attack each other because they no longer have any points of contact. 1st place is in their way.

WvW maps were clearly designed so that 2nd and 3rd place can always attack each other, short of 1st place owning literally the entire WvW map. And typically, they prefer to attack each other because it’s easier to get points from the team that doesn’t have the presence to be in 1st place.

Every week, probably in most every tier, is really a “battle for 2nd place” with the 1st place team largely just acting as a spoiler.

In short,
I don’t see WvW ever really presenting a consistently fun experience across all tiers with the current map design. Battles for 2nd aren’t as fun as battles for 1st, but the maps don’t properly encourage a battle for 1st.

Put “Current Rating Change” where the score is.
Put the score in much smaller numbers below this.

People don’t understand that there’s a big difference in “3rd place by 10,000 points” and “3rd place by 50,000 points”. It’s possible to be in 3rd place and still GAIN RATING. Thursday really is just as important as Friday or Saturday when it comes to rating change. First place by 10,000 isn’t as good as first place by 50,000 either, because it’s also easily possible to be in first place and LOSE RATING.

I think the problem is the huge majority of players don’t understand this or simply lose sight of it when the only thing they see is a giant scorecard with no indication of rating or rating change.

It’s sad when players have to go to a 3rd party website to get the real data. It should be in the in-game interface.

Many tools in the map are already in place. Siege. Some terrain. Supply mechanics. Dolyaks. Sentries.

It’s not a bad setup.

It’s just too constrained and the pressure collapses the overarching strategy into zerg + treb network. More raw space would cause players to try more random kitten like siege setups in the open, more room for tactical maneuvers like feints and such. More chokepoints aside from tower/keep gates.

That’s my feeling as well. The GW2 WvW setup is way better than anything in WOW, SWTOR, etc. It’s not blow-your-socks-off awesome but it’s a good start. I mean there’s no construction or exploration or anything that’s really long term (you’re lucky to get up the next day and still own that keep you took last night — likely if you DO own it, it’s because it changed hands twice while you were away), but it’s better than most.

I don’t understand this need to “FILL ALL THE MAPS!” though. Any time I suggest adding more maps the answer is “but then we can’t fill them all up!”

Yes! Exactly! That’s the idea! EVE is like 90% empty sectors. Even Planetside always had a couple of empty maps. That’s room to expand and do sneaky stuff.

WvW really isn’t an “open world sandbox game”. It’s more like a WOW battleground, just somewhat bigger. It’s Super Alterac Valley is all. It could be so much more.

Because I don’t generally want to spend my free time picking carrots in PvE zones in order to feed my troop? That doesn’t sound like a fun game.

Now if the carrot collection area also had PvP and could be subject to raids by the enemy, that would be fun. But to sit in a safe zone doing something boring, like farming boss mobs? I’ll pass.

@TwoBit
The critical part is the mechanics the game supports. Yes, EVE requires players to care about territory takeover but the game itself mechanically supports the act of taking over territory. SWTOR and SWG didn’t. SWG had structures you could place but you couldn’t destroy them and the PvP was all consensual. So with all PvP being “by your leave”, nothing was ever really at stake unless you wanted it to be and Empire vs Rebels had to be contrived make-believe by the players.

Basically I think some people view “sand box” as a literal empty field (SWTOR, in fact, had one open PvP area that actually was just an empty area that flagged you for PvP — there was nothing to do there; no mechanical support for anything but shooting other players for no reason). A real sandbox has mechanical support for doing things and reasons to want to do them.

It’s kind of like two sandboxes — one is just a box filled with sand. The other has buckets, a water hose, a bulldozer, a dumptruck, a backhoe, ladders, etc. Some roleplayers try to argue that the first sandbox is good enough because you’re supposed to use your imagination for everything else.

I need the game to meet my imagination half-way by providing some tools. EVE has tools. SWG didn’t.

Seriously, though, I think WvW is about 40% thief now. I finally gave up and made one myself and it IS fun. I have 3 ways to stealth at level 10. Really need traits to make it all good but I run around killing dolyaks and generally can’t be stopped. Stealth, switch to shortbow, teleport, teleport, stealth, teleport, run.

I stopped buying upgrades about 2 months ago and really cut back on my siege buying.

I finally have 3 gold.

Most of what I make goes into repair bills and consumables. Meanwhile my guildmates go on PvE runs and make 3 gold in like an hour — more, sometimes much much much more if they get a good drop or two. I have yet to get a single exotic drop in WvW and I’ve been playing since beta 2. I could probably count the yellow drops I’ve seen without running out of fingers.

They clearly wanted WvW to pay out poorly but they overdid it.

Sat through the video, not familiar with the genre history or the example of Eve, it’d be good if someone could go into more detail. To me it just sounds like an alliance conflict that developed its own content outside the game.

That’s the beautiful thing about EVE. There is no “players developing their own content”, per se.

That is, in SWTOR there were no game mechanics to support any sort of conflict. You’d see people playing make-believe by pretending to have a viral invasion or some other excuse to fight but really the game didn’t support it. You essentially had to play make-believe.

In EVE, there are good, in-game mechanical reasons to fight. These guys aren’t saying “hey, I know, let’s all meet up and pretend there’s like an invasion or something and have a big war!”

It’s actually an invasion. High value items are at stake. Guilds can lose bases, get kicked off of extremely valuable moon mines and so forth. There are EVE guilds who would very likely get into actual fist fights if they ever met in real-life because emotions can run pretty high when so much is at stake. This is probably why EVE has been around for 10 years and SWTOR lost most of its players in the first 10 months.

Basically, in EVE you don’t have to pretend to hate the enemy and pretend to have some reason to fight and pretend there is something at stake.

There’s always something really at stake. Sometimes it’s something really big that took months to build up or which your guild has literally owned for over a year.

This idea of “player generated content” is just lazy development. If your players are so bored that they are having to pretend to have a reason to care, then your game isn’t going to last long. That certainly happened to SWG. It was a sandbox but it had no mechanics to support a real conflict. And now it’s dead.

Collision Detection Needed

Collision detection on a WvW scale would grind the servers to a halt. I’d rather not see that happen.

That’s an amusing idea.

You know Everquest 1 had full collision.

It was made in 1999 and ran on Pentium II’s. I’m sure it would really bog down a modern server and clients running 8-core Intel chips…

Another thought about guilds in WvW:

My guild has actually split into about 3 parts. We still use the same forums, Teamspeak, etc, but we all fly different tags because it makes more sense to have 3 guilds of 30 players each rather than one guild of 90. You get 2 research slots for acquiring new WvW stuff like guild catapults and buffs. You CAN spend influence to hurry things along but you’ll get a whole lot more bang-for-the-buck if you split your guild up and research 6 things at a time across 3 guilds rather than 2 things at a time. This also lets us build up more catapults and golems for a rainy day, not to mention we can now run +5 supply buffs at three different camps (or 1 camp every day without having to spend influence hurrying research).

It’s just one more way this game is anything but “guild wars”. I’m kinda bummed to see my guild flying three different flags but I can’t deny the sense of doing so. In WvW your guild should split up into multiple guilds because that’s what the game rewards.

Anet is literally running this game into the ground and i have a feeling it’s intentional. GW2 is a box sales game and the less people that continue to play the better / cheaper it is for Anet. All hey need to do is keep some people interested and hype up the next expansion to reel customers back in.

Well, in theory the cash store would be a way for them to keep making money off of people who keep logging in every day and playing but in practice there’s nothing in the cash store that tempts me in the least. I bought keys one time and never will again because most of what it did was give me a bunch of junk that’s still sitting in my bank taking up space.

I dunno what the solution is there but I have wondered the same thing you bring up — that Anet may be letting the game shed players because there’s not enough money in keeping them, versus just bringing them all back for the next box expansion.

Personally, I would pay $10/month for WvW alone if it could be expanded and turned into a long term game with depth and consequence.

Lack of depth/consequence is, I think, the biggest long-term problem and the one least likely to be solved because it requires the most effort.

“More loot” is not really an incentive and in fact it’s a DISincentive for new players, who now must play even longer before they reach the new bar and become competitive, so that’s not the type of depth/consequence I’m looking for.

Nail on head is that when you log in tomorrow, there will be no sign of anything you did today. In most cases the things you took will have flipped overnight. They may be fully upgraded but only because it got lost, retaken and rebuilt while you were offline. Nothing you or your guild does has any lasting effect. You could all quit on Wednesday and by Friday night there will be no indication your guild ever existed or did anything.

That’s kind of depressing in a game we sink so much time into. By comparison, EVE can give guilds things that take a lot of time and effort to build up but also takes a lot of time and effort to tear down. Shadowbane aimed for this as well. Your guild was a real thing with real presence and things you accomplished today could last for a while.

That’s not what WvW is and I agree with the OP that it won’t ever become that. It’s a neat little mini-game that ArenaNet built on the side and that’s how its been treated.

Also it seems like Ebay wants to consolidate their presence on this tier by stealing the 2nd place from CD, wich may be very possible to do if they keep pressuring them like this all the weeks, maybe for the reset on march 1 they’ll make it, if SBI doesn’t steal them their place first lol.

The consensus is we can’t beat the Yak zerg on their home turf. We just don’t have the manpower for that while staying competitive in EB and holding our home turf.

We CAN beat CD on their home turf, though. Seems most of the time, CD can hold on in Eternal or their homeland but not both.

It’s kind of a serious problem, in my opinion, but it’s the way the game is setup. Rather than 2nd + 3rd battling 1st, it’s 2nd vs 3rd fighting for 2nd with 1st getting in the way of one or the other.

Other 3-way games, including DAOC and Planetside, were implemented such that 2nd and 3rd place often had no choice but to attack 1st place. WvW always gives a route for every team to attack the other, though, so there is no reason to bang your head against the first place team when there’s easier pickins.

Why do people play WvWvW?

in WvW

Slamz.5376

I wonder how many people who have been playing MMORPGs for more than 5 years still really enjoy PvE.

I mean I did WOW for 3 years. It was on a PvP server but WOW dungeons are all instanced anyway so basically I did PvE for 3 years without complaint.

Problem is now every PvE setup, no matter how dynamic, challenging or interesting, is too much like what I spent 3 years doing in WOW (and more years repeating, basically, in every other MMORPG since). It just feels like pointless tedium.

At least in WvW I can come off of a keep defense or tower capture, look at the map and say “Something on this map is the way it is because of something I did” (or helped to do), “and everyone can see it.”

You come out of a PvE dungeon with a new pair of pants and nobody in the world notices or cares. If you didn’t have much fun doing it then it was just a complete waste of time. Arguably all games are time-wasters but games where I learn nothing, impact nothing and don’t improve my skills any is a REAL waste of time. Might as well go watch paint dry.

Competitive online gaming is where it’s at.
Cooperative PvE is for people new to the genre who aren’t bored out of their skulls by it already.

It’s got more strategic and tactical depth than any other facet of the game.

Yes, it’s disappointing to see people come in with gear from PvE that I can’t get (or can’t practically get) through WvW, and it’s superior to my WvW gear but I just live with it for now. I really don’t care about gear other than I need to keep up with the Jonses.

Yes, I can’t afford most of what I want to do and I gave up buying upgrades once I added the additional money sink of consumables and WvW generates FAR less gold per hour than PvE but PvE bores me so much that I can’t bring myself to go do it. I just cut back on my WvW expenses to balance my budget and try to play market buy/sell games to supplement.

But I disagree that the larger force always wins. In a straight open field zerg-on-zerg yeah there’s not a lot of margin for error, usually. 30 will usually beat 20 even if the 20 are more skilled…usually. In a defensive action, though, 20 skilled players with walls and siege can hold off 30 unskilled players pretty much forever. I know we’ve held a keep for 2 hours under odds worse than that (like 20 defenders against 60+ attackers).

“Sandbox PvP”, which WvW is the closest thing GW2 has to that, is some of the most fun a game can offer. Toys to play with, goals to achieve but few real restrictions on how, when and where we achieve them makes for a far more interesting game than PvE or sPvP, long term.

Really it’s just the stealth mechanic that’s broken. There’s no true counter to it. I rolled a thief exclusively for killing backline dolyaks because nobody can stop me. Even at level 7 I was able to escape most ganks by hitting C/D, then swap to shortbow, teleport, use my stealth-heal then teleport again and by the time they realized where I went I was too far away for most people to bother chasing.

High damage + extreme escape abilities + no counter to stealth = best class in the game. Thief is the best tank class for WvW. Not getting hit > any set of epic toughness gear.

Best class to get lots of wvw loot bags?

Hmm, I seem to get the least with my guardian. He’s support and does most of his DPS (if you can call it that) with his staff. Tons of hits but very few bags. Gave up playing him largely for that reason.

My flamethrower engineer does decent. Flamethrower spam hits a great deal harder than my support Guardian’s staff…

My staff elementalist probably does the best. Heavy damage AE.

I wonder if it’s damage based but only direct damage — no conditions. That would explain why my AE elementalist gets good bag drops but that other guy’s AE necro doesn’t.

It always seems like the thieves of the guild are having to take loot selling breaks and run around to pick up bags moreso than anyone else, though.

Had some really epic battles last night against Yaks in Eternal around 1-3am eastern. I kept trying to go to bed and Yaks kept showing up with another golem-based attack. Finally had to switch to the engineer and bust out the Giant Charr Flamethrower to help push them out of our keep.

Someone commented in chat that it was like fighting zombie hordes. They just kept coming in endless waves. We were having to bring in supply from other borderlands to keep our stuff repaired, rebuilding the cannons and all of that. EBay did a great job on repairs and getting back to the siege after a lull, plus getting back to the keep after we pushed Yaks out and started working on towers only to have them show up at the keep again.

I think we pretty well kept them from scratching our interior doors despite 15+ golems though I noticed they had one interior wall to 50% at one point (not sure how that happened; didn’t see it).

When I finally logged off we had secured the keep, repaired the outer doors and got our two back towers and were working on the forward towers.

After 2 weeks of trouncing T5 and a week of getting run over by Kaineng on their way up to T2, this week is a refreshing fight. Scores are still pretty competitive too.

Reviving keep lord with Battle Standard

in WvW

Posted by: Slamz.5376

Slamz.5376

Good use of game mechanics.

It’s most effective when the attackers themselves are “exploiting” by pulling the lord as far away from the circle as possible. They try to get him away from the crowds where they can kill him around a corner without interference but the downside is they now have two distinct areas to defend: the circle and the Lord’s body.

If they just killed the Lord in the circle, they could defend both at the same time.

Besides, the circle flips SO FAST that defenders often have little chance of turning things around at that point. A quick rez of the lord for a reset of the circle is the only hope they have of really drawing out the fight and giving more defenders a chance to show up.

Running Nom Nom Berry Pie, maintenance oil and skale venom constantly is kind of a money sink, but I have to do that because everyone else is.

Running consumables all the time is the new baseline. (Some of you seem to think that running consumables is “elite”. No. Running consumables is average. Not running them makes you below average.)

Removing them doesn’t mesh with ArenaNet’s plan to make WvW be the money sink for the entire game, though.

WvW Format and Burnout

in WvW

Posted by: Slamz.5376

Slamz.5376

I think burnout is a result of lack of options.

It’s WvW time! What am I going to log in and do:

  • Attack or defend a tower, keep or camp
  • Flip NPCs
  • Escort dolyaks
  • ???

That’s….pretty much the extent of it. It’s not like I can work on building a new outpost or increasing my guild’s presence in the world or exploring new territory or making any real lasting changes. The list of “things to do” is too short and as a result, people burn out. Farming up loot and titles won’t really help, I think, because those aren’t new activities so much as incidental events to activities you were already [tired of] doing.

It doesn’t help that there are really only 2 maps, so the strategic variety is very narrow. There’s only so many times you can attack Hills or Bay before you need something new and while that will be true no matter how many maps there are, it happens a lot faster with 2 maps rather than, say, 15.
