Y U NO VAEL?

SlyFoxSays.5342

Considering where the player encounters Vael in GW1, I find it unlikely that we will hear of him until we are allowed to venture further north and into the Flame Legion homelands. As he was not actually Ebon Vanguard, but rather a mercenary with an apparent vendetta against the char, I find it unlikely that he would have headed south to Ebonhawke during the recall, and thus that is why we see no reference to him there or in DR.

I foresee some sort of quasi guerrilla attack force founded by Vael operating in Flame legion lands.

Considering what these objects are, why aren’t they more important to the story line? It seems to me that the dragons would really really want to consume these and Queen Jennah, being King Doric’s heir, would make protecting these objects a top priority. You know, since a Seer was nice enough to seal all the uncorrupted magic left over from the last dragon attacks into a nice big fat dragon snack.

Cantha had some xenophobic emperrors but nothing indicates that the current one is one such emperror. Because w know nothing about it. And to just go to a random land to kill off its totally harmless leader is just nonsense.

http://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Cantha this probably needs be rewritten then, as it totally implies xenophobia….
“Emperor Usoku, raised the Canthan military by spending millions in gold and conquered the still-warring vassal states of the Luxons and Kurzicks, forcing them fully into the empire once more. With this done, he then drove out all non-humans and closed the borders to Cantha.”

Now for a main antagonist in Cantha, there is a Xenophobic Emperor, so…
.

I doubt assassination will be on the agenda… that would be far to similar to the Ministry of Purity story arc. What sounds better? Xenophobic emperor gets more xenophobic and is killed, or xenophobic emperor receives help from foreigners in defeating a great force and realizes the error of his ways?

Missing Dragons and Cantha

in Lore

Posted by: SlyFoxSays.5342

SlyFoxSays.5342

In no way cannon, but I was considering the notion that perhaps the reason why it is suggested in Winds of Change that there are currently no known dragons operating in Cantha is due to that fact that they are sort of sleeping away under Echovald forest and the Jade Sea and are unable to rise due to the landscape around them having been changed so drastically by the Jade Wind. (Water dragon with no water/ forest dragon with no forest)

Given that we already know the locations of 3 dragons on Tyria and already have the set up for a main antagonist for Elona (Palawa Joko), would it be too far-fetched to assume that the last remaining dragons will belong to the Canthan story line?

I can even see a tie in with Kanaxai and Urgoz being dragon champs, as their back stories are murky at best: A demon of unknown origins with the ability to corrupt those around him and an enraged forest spirit guarded by ancient wardens of unknown origins. All of which, were unaffected by the Jade Wind. That sounds a lot like dragon magic to me!

Whats in a rank?

in PvP

Posted by: SlyFoxSays.5342

SlyFoxSays.5342

Generally, the purpose of a ranking system is to establish who fights at what caliber. That being said, the system is, generally, used to establish which fighters are worthy, in fact, of fighting each other. To elaborate, if someone is ranked #1, it doesn’t make a lot of sense for that fighter to go a round against the #85 fighter. They are not in the same tier.
So why does that make sense here? If a team is low tier, why are they fighting a high tier? Does any team benefit from this fight? No. Is it frustrating for the lower tier team, and potentially causing some players to not want to PvP? Yes. Is it boring and insulting to the higher tier team? Yes.
Ignoring ranking for the sake of matchmaking defeats the purpose of ranking. Please fix it.

Given the abundance of crafting options in this game, why not add one more? Making use of excess crafting materials, as well as creating a new crafting material sink, we should be given the ability to craft our own homes in our home instance. It could utilize many or all crafting functions and perhaps take preparation, not unlike a real building project, thus rewarding maximization of crafting and instigating further game play.

Joko And Elona

SlyFoxSays.5342

Scouting the desolation in GW1 clearly shows the ruins of previous civilizations. Given that the desolation was created when Abaddon was cast out, and this is the region in which Joko hails/rules froms, I am willing to bet that the creation of Joko as a sort lich king and the creation of the desolation are interconnected. Though there were also the ruins of some Shattered Dynasty “kingdoms” such as the Remains of Sahlahja, as well as ruins from when Turai Ossa went on his pilgrimage into the Crystal Desert, such as Lannur.

Perhaps Joko ruled over a kingdom that was destroyed during the fighting between the gods and he was imbued with some sort of godly magic side-effect. Purely speculation of course, but given that Vizier Khilbron was turned into a lich under similar circumstances, it seems possible.

Those ruins were built by the Primeval Kings (some by the Forgotten though), who’s reign went as far north as the Tomb of the Primeval Kings.

Currently nothing links Joko to the Primeval Kings, especially since Joko is said to have been an “up and coming prince” when Oswald Thorn was alive 500 years prior to GW2. Meaning that, most likely, the time in which Joko appeared as a lich is shortly after his life as a mortal.

The only (known) civilization around in the Crystal Sea area prior to the Exodus were the Margonites and the Forgotten – the latter were not humans, the former did not build those ruins as they were a sea-faring people.

There is some, obscure, evidence that points towards some activity by Abaddon or his agents around 450 AE.

Are you referring to the Scarab Plague? Because 1) nothing really hints at Abaddon’s influence there and 2) that’s the only thing of note around that timeframe.

You’re like some sort of GW lore guru. I forgot about the Mad King’s statements. :/ It just seems to me that Joko has some connection to the Desolation, beyond simple defense, that hasn’t been addressed as yet.

Possible she was talking about his champions or land to be reclaimed or something.

Theres an ArenaNet member post from a few weeks ago which clarifies that Zhaitan is in fact dead.

“…the Six Human Gods arrived from the Mists, and made Orr a green and flowering expanse. They followed a source of magic coming from The Artesian Waters and built over the subterranean waterway their city, which they called Arah.”

The only in-game reference to them, I know of, is derived from a communion skill challenge found in Cursed Shores: “It’s unknown what purpose these giant rings once served, but they fell with such a force that they’re now half buried in the Orrian soil.”

I think it can be safe to conclude that this is just architecture of godly proportions, giving a glimpse of Orr’s former grandeur without affecting the dilapidated vibe brought out by Zhaitan’s corruption.

Skritt won’t even work as a playable race – their intelligence relies on being surrounded by other Skritt. In fact, the primary way young Skritt die is being separated from their peers and making dumb, suicidal moves as a result of their decreased intellect. This mechanic, unless retconned, ignored, or compensated for by making players control a small group of Skritt rather than a single one, ensures that the Skritt are doomed to remain a minor race.

Easy work around: “Special Skritt.” Example: Genetic mutation due to Inquest experimentation leads to an evolved colony of Skritt capable of independent thought, etc.

For necros ;
Well for some reason minions were tougher back in GW1.

Or there wasn’t so much aoe damage, so MM builds were much more viable. They used to give an amazing support for the whole group, and decent dps ( I haven’t played GW1 too much so not really sure about this )

Now minions are just… They die too fast with aoes. I’d prefer having a massive army of 12 minions instead of 5 minions with special abilities :P.

Imo having some kind of aoe damage mitigation for minions might actually make minion builds more viable in PvE, or even WvW. Despite the lower channel time and other special advantages, lack of damage mitigation on minions makes them weaker and useless in GW2.

I agree, something should be done about the state of minions for all classes, they fold quickly under pressure, but strictly talking PvP, there seems to be a reason why MMs and Spirit rangers weren’t viable in GW1, they had obvious rupt counters. Pure rupters dont seem to exist anymore. As well, they had severe limitations. Spirits gave AoE bonus’ to all and didn’t walk around, minions were mindless drones and extra dmg from them took thought from the user…

as far as GW1 pvp MM were viable , just harder to master , some more skill required that once going , could become the terror that necromancers were , now when you a see a MM you go “oh look minions <blink eyes> haha look at that necro with all his minions on CD trying to actually fight , free kill (more or less)” the skill factor is not appliable here as of the state of minions got destroyed between the 2 games……yes minions could die in GW1 pvp as well , but you werent restricted by long * cds on the minions , just needed energy to cast them (plenty of ways to get energy back ) , some of us still wish MM would be as viable as it was in GW1 , but with how PvE dungeons are designed , it will never be due to the mass aoe you see nonstop , and with necro survivability seemingly getting destroyed every patch now cause of pvp , cant expect well see any changed for a chance to see MM again…

Strictly speaking about the higher tiers of GW1 pvp, if you brought an MM into RA or HA, you were just rupt candy. However, MM was completly viable in AB or FA, to minor extent, JQ, given the size of the map and type of play. Minions used to also have buffs, which is lacking now. Perhaps Anet decided minion attacks warrented the forfeit of minion buffs? (Death Nova, anyone?)

You can’t interrupt a 1.5 second cast with the most obvious animations ever? Are you kidding me? :O

You obviously misunderstood. I never stated I couldn’t do anything. This isn’t a debate about playing skills. That would be an observation about the difference between 3 sec and 1.5.

I read it as the available cast time doesn’t allow much of an interrupt. One thing to take away from the lower cast times of minions in this game, however is thakittens still very long when most skills are 1/4-1sec and 1 sec cast times are considered slow. 1 1/2 cast times are very hard to pull off mid-combat with any class who has decent cc ability or raw interrupts

My bad. I was just meaning that the old cast time allowed for much more rupt time, making for a much more cautious MM. As well, some of those rupts gave 30sec downtimes. Nothing in this game currently does that.

I will say that the extra cast time allows for an interrupt that is currently not available. I do feel that it is kinda bunk that a player can essentially raise an army within seconds that provides an automated meat shield with little to no repercussions or requirements. This should be obvious to ANet that this creates an unfair advantage, especially given these professions other natural abilities, ie condition/evade spam.

And before all of you chime in with “focus on the master,” I know. That was old hat in GW1, I’m merely speaking on the potential for counter.

Nothing I am too concerned about, but I was considering GW2’s current state of necro minion and spirit ranger in comparison to their GW1 counterpart. Especially in consideration to their mechanics.

Minion Master-

GW1-
nearby source needed to summon
3 sec cast rate to summon a minion
no special attacks
GW2-
no source needed for summon
1.5 cast rate to summon
special attacks
————

Spirit Ranger-

GW1-
spirits are stationary
buffs effect all players (friend/foe)
3 sec cast time
no special attack
GW2-
spirits have the potential to follow
buffs team/allies only
1.5 sec cast time
special attacks

As stated before, I am not too concerned about this functionality change, i find it quite practical. I am, however, interested in hearing what others think. Discuss?

SlyFoxSays.5342

I’ll take this more seriously when I see tournament engineers using this as a prominent build. There are so many trade-offs made to create this build that only excels in very specific situations.

It takes a lot, and entire build, to support the AR trait and make it effective against a specific class. That build, as provided above, would be relatively useless in team-fights, would get destroyed by anything other than rabid-condi builds, and would only prove effective in the small niche it was created for. Effectively, it is insanely effective provided the following scenario:

1.) You build around it. Yes, elixir C is building around it. (The skill does not see any usage outside of a buildset like this, I have yet to see it in ANY professional play.)

2.) You’re bunkering home point. Their home, or mid, would have enough movement through it that you’d get bursted by any power build.

3.) You’re fighting a necro. Yes, other classes utilized condition damage builds, but, the majority also easily have access to 5k damage needed to kill the engy. Rangers have pets/base damage, other engineers have access to bombs/flame/toolkit, Mesmers have mind-wrack, ect. Even then the Necro, if played, well, should be able to win in the long run (engy isn’t killing anyone).

4.) The necro doesn’t call in their roamer. Most Tpvp teams have a highly mobile roamer for the very purpose of creating 2v1s and taking points. You’re insane if you think they wouldn’t jump on this opportunity frequently.

5.) The team doesn’t decide to just send anything other than a Necro, pushes another point or maintains map control, or utilizes any other map action (orbs, treb, laser, bosses, ect).

If those conditions are met, you’re right, it is an amazing trait. But, you need a very specific set of situations, decisions, and silliness to make it that useful. I’ve played around with the trait, and I’ve fought other engys with the trait (as a condi-engy). Are there some condition damage 1v1s I won because of it; yes. Could I have won them with other builds; easily. Did I lose a lot of flexbility/utility/usefulness in the match and to support my team in general; absolutely.

tl;dr – This build requires very specific situations to be remotely useful that are easily countered by changing team play, or by utilizing ANY other class than necro. I’ll consider it OP when I actually see any “high-tier” engineers building around it.

This… this right here. Yes.
