Personally, I have serious doubts that the majority of players who are on these forums saying they’re bored, are going to quit/have quit, bought any gems in the first place.

It’s a good argument, but one that holds zero weight if you never bought gems to begin with.

I am not bragging but so far I bought $90 worth of gems and I will continue to buy gems so long as the game remains fun for me.

Why I'm not happy with Loot cap/Diminishing Returns.

@Cribbage like it or not in this game you NEED people to play. Chasing players away from the game is going to make a sad Cribbage the day you log in and there is no one to play with!

I don’t really see how players logging on to grind helps me. It doesn’t give me anyone to team with in PvP and it doesn’t give allies to kill event bosses with.

Yes, I definitely DO need a decent level of population to play, but they need to be something other than grinding zombies to have a beneficial effect on my game.

Who do you think buys and sells materials? Who do you think trades gold for gems? Who do you think grinds honor badges for hours on end making PVP enjoyable? I could go on and on DR effects PVP and PVE.

I think you are kinda missing the point.

If grinding mats is a necessary part of the game economy, my preference is to change the economy so it is no longer necessary. Not to invite a load of farmers to play.

If grinding honour badges is the only way to get someone to PvP, then my preference is to make PvP be enough fun that people don’t NEED and artificial currency to motivate them.

In other words, make the game fun enough that people will actually want to play it for its own sake.

To this I say amen but truth behold the current system requires a massive grind. Have you ever leveled a craft to 400? The amount of mats you need is mind boggling. Want to travel to 10 zones @80? Get ready to bend over minimum your going to pay 2s30c if they way point is 10ft away and up to 5s if its far away.

Anet does a great job at keeping you broke, the game is very unrewarding. The only way to get ahead is to sit there and grind until your rear end is numb. DR took that away leaving anyone who didn’t get their gear before DR screwed. That’s why there is such a uproar on the forum.

I should say of course they want and appreciate continuted patronage. More income is always appreciated in any business. And you touched upon the good qualities of the buy to play system- you are not forced to buy the gems with real life money, you can simply play the game and exchange gold for gems.

Are you proposing that you want some sort of fan thank you letter or in game reward?

News flash! In order to trade gold for gems some one has to buy the gems first.

ArenaNet values their customers, and I’m sure is quite interested in ongoing revenue in the gem shop and through sales of expansions.

They can not, however, please every player. This game will never be all things to all people. Some people are going to decide this isn’t the game for them, and are going to leave. ArenaNet would be very foolish to try and please everyone…they need to stick with their design philosophy and continue to develop and fix bugs based on the solid foundation they have in place.

I don’t undestand what more ArenaNet could do, beyond the daily interaction here on the forums, and the many posts on Facebook, Twitter, and reddit. They are as engaged as they can be, and taking feedback and bug reports and working on the game the best they can. Again, none of that means that your particular gripes are going to be addressed. There are hundreds of thousands of people in the community, and there’s no way ArenaNet can have personal conversations with each one and change the game to make each one happy.

I know it might seem that a lot of people are unhappy with certain things when reading these forums, but it’s important to keep in perspective that forum posters are a very small, vocal, and deeply invested portion of the overall player base. You really can’t know how the overall community is liking the game or how much they are playing based on what you see here. The truth is, pretty much everything gets entirely blown out of proportion and deeply polarized in an echo chamber like this…and it’s easy to get carried away by the mob and get very bent out of shape and emotional.

ArenaNet is obviously professional, and has plenty of experience running an online game and dealing with a community. This isn’t their first rodeo. They know what’s really happening with the community overall, and are the only ones who can decide what changes are workable in their design and which are not. I think they generally go out of their way to be open and provide detailed information and explanations when they do things…so I don’t really see a problem, other than you personally not liking certain things and not getting your personal issues directly addressed in what you feel is a timely manner.

Your 100% right most people leave with out saying a word. The people complaining about the game on the forums are the players who want it to succeed! Yet the fan boys puff up their chest and attack anyone who has anything to say other then Anet are gods!

I just checked the servers (by choosing “world selection” at character select, if you want to try some real data instead of dooming n glooming):

NA Mostly Full and heavy with 3 medium
EU Some Full, mostly High and some medium

Yep, everyone has left

I said people start leaving around the 30 day mark and leave by the masses @90day mark. Favorite this thread and check the population in 60 days and then do a comparison.

@Dan there is a HUGE difference between GW1 and GW2. GW1 was a peer to peer game which means some ones PC was hosting the game and sharing their bandwidth with other players.

GW2 on the other hand is a full fledged MMORPG which means Anet is hosting the game on their servers and using their bandwidth. The cost to maintain GW2 is at least 10x that of GW1 and that can not be maintained on B2P alone or they wouldnt have a cash shop!

@knight your only fooling yourself if you don’t think Anet likes Gem sales. They want to keep you in the game as long as possible and they want you to buy lots of gems. With out Gem sales sooner or latter they would be forced to shut the game down because of lack of funds!

I have one word for you “Gem$” with out the sale of Gem$ Anet will shut this game down faster then you can blink your eye!

But the people I’m talking about refuse to loosen their grip on the credit card to pay a monthly fee. Why would they buy gems when they just want to pass the time until the next MMO release?

You’re talking about the Farmville crowd there, where a single “whale” spends enough to subsidize the game for thousands of free players. Arenanet only needs a small number of these players and they are not among the group I posted about.

I hate to break it to you they need more then a small amount to keep the game going and updated. If enough people don’t buy Gem$ then customer support, game development, and new expansions and your very own player experience will suffer!

An interesting social phenomenon.

Varyag Guild Wars 1 was a whole different animal.

True, but it survived fine without WoW players and “the sky is falling” MMORPG jumpers.

Funny how I see Guild Wars 1 players making daily posts/threads about how much this game sucks and Anet is a sell out.

Actually, I’d say Anet have made the only MMORPG since Guild Wars 1 that was actually worth paying for.

I agree the game was very fun before DR. Being punished for the way I want to play the game is not fun.

@Undead look at Star Wars Bioware spent $300 million developing the game and by 90 days it was a ghost town and now its going free to play. That’s just one example! Just because a game is free to play doesn’t mean players are going to keep playing if there unhappy.

P.S. if you want proof of a unhappy player base go to the 1~70 zones they are ghost towns which means lack of new sales and people not happy enough with the game to make new alts!

@dalendria yes the high level zones are populated but the fact is the low level zones are not and as Kimbald say many players are having trouble doing world events.

WOW is a beast of another nature at one point they had 15 million players and they were under 8 million not too long ago, I am sure some came back for pandas but they will leave again in a few months.

If you haven’t noticed the newbee areas in this game are becoming barren which means two things. (A) The high level players are not having enough fun to make alts. (B) Game sales have slowed!

I love this game its the best game that I have played in a long time. Having said that Anet should not dictate how players should play a game. Games are meant to be played any way a player see’s fit. The way they are handling things right now is killing off the player base and I don’t want to see this game die.

MMO’s shouldn’t be about 1 play type they are meant to be played by the way a player see’s fit. And to the people saying that only a few people are complaining about DR. That’s because others flat out quit with out saying a word.

Have you looked at the 1 to 70 zones on your server? Mine are pretty barren which means players are not having enough fun to make alts and game sales have slowed!

@Zaxan my AMD FX 8120 3.1GHZ can max the FPS on 98% of the games I own. The only games that it cant max is the poorly written ones. I can peg BF3 @60+FPS running 1920×1080 on the highest setting. That game is 5 times more resource intense then this game.

Which proves this games code was very poorly written. Even people with I5 & I7 processors are singing the blues. About the only type of processor that has no complaints of low FPS are the I7 Extreme people and I would sure hope if your running a $1k processor that you wouldn’t have any complaints in any game!

Lets be honest with our selves here 80%~90% of players in any game are lone wolf type or play with a select group of friends. And the random people who do try and group together are punished by game mechanics. Go try a dungeon and come back and tell me how much you like grouping with randoms.

Soulwatcher.2604

I’ll be honest here. I do like the game. I’ve got an 80 mesmer and I love pvping with it. I’ve even grown to love my guardian alt. But, I’m not as “into” the game as I was a month ago. Mostly because I’m an explorer at heart and I’ve already unlocked the whole map on one character. It was awesome, but what can I do now that I’ve done what I enjoy the most? So that’s one thing. Second, I really like progression systems and I feel as if my progression on my 80 is done. I’m in exotics, story is done, world is explored, all skills unlocked, trait build set, only thing I can truly progress now with it is sPVP. That’s fun for a few matches but the length of time to rank up is pretty slow and the reward for doing so, pretty minimal.

I just find myself starting to look elsewhere for that sense of immersion and progression that I feel MMOs should have. Granted, it hasn’t been done right in any game since FFXI, but I can’t blame Anet for that. I blame the genre for getting away from creating long lasting content.

I’m hoping Anet with their awesome base game can innovate in the area of longevity now and surprise us all with some incredible updates. Updates that extend the life of the game and MAKE me want to log in and keep playing.

I have to agree with you here FFXI was a magical game that captured your imagination and keep you sucked into the world. Granted it was one heck of a journey to 80 in Guild Wars 2 but now I am left with a now what feeling. How ever I don’t plan on quitting any time soon!

Are MMO players trained to play for progression...

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Soulwatcher.2604

Soulwatcher.2604

IDK if its progression or direction, but once you hit 80 in this game your left with the feeling of now what? The broker gear is the same stats of dungeon gear so most people feel its not worth the grind. 100% map completion is non rewarding as well. I am afraid this game is going to loose tons of players if Arenanet doesn’t fix it fast.
