These two links provide a lot of useful information, comparing different graphics cards.
The first groups different cards into categories, the better quality, higher up the list. It also makes a direct comparison between AMD and NVIDIA which is very useful.

The second does a similar job but in a different way.

If I may suggest, stick with the brand you know.
You are wrong mate, mesmers got terrible damage but boost the whole group with alacrity, necro got mediocer damage but since they dont give the group anything they are rarely wanted, and elementalists got highest damage on big targets + a crap ton of boons from combo fields that they blast.
Thank you. I lack your expience.
However, my understanding from others is that magic users can take very little damage, relative to heavy armour users.
Which is the point I was originally making.
I am not very good in playing an Elementalist but the Ele is still among the classes with the highest dps, or even the class with the highest dps, but it is not very easy to play and not very beginner friendly (IMO).
Correct me if I’m wrong, but I’m pretty sure all of the magical characters have a high DPS.
Their problem is their ability to take damage.
Hence they tend to be better in a group.
Sadly, the majority of players are long term and tend to prefer playing with other experienced players.
The only feasible way for the inexperienced players to meet up and discuss ideas is with a beginners forum.
And we’re back to square one.
The game ‘ending in a couple of years’ is just opinion. No facts point to this conclusion. Using the L80 Boost has nothing to do with unlocking Gliding or any other mechanic in the game. I’ve yet to use mine, and I have every Mastery unlocked I care to.
.
The point about this game, like similar, only has a couple more years to run is speculative and I apologise for not making this clear.
Most of the games of the current type are entering an Endgame phase.
They are almost all, shutting down most of the lower level quests, allowing new players to move quickly to the higher levels. This is pretty evident in GW2.
‘Latest updates’ are being sold for extraordinary prices and without these, many games are frankly tedious. This is pretty evident in GW2
New technology has emerged, which remains expensive and limited. Past experience of the last 40 years suggests that prices of new technology will come down dramatically and new features will emerge. What those new features will be is not hard to guess. They will certainly be a game changer, making the current crop of games about as interesting as Pong.
As for the point about Gliding, I can only repeat the reference to the Wiki, which I used and which I quoted.
If the Wiki is wrong, then I do hope it will apologise to you.
https://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Gliding
Gliders can only be used after learning the Glider Basics mastery,
https://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Glider_Basics
Before completion: Gain access to the glider so that you can glide like a squirrel across the highest points of the Heart of Maguuma.
After completion: To glide, jump from a high place, and then press the jump key again while falling.
Yes, the glider skill is learnt after Glider Basics mastery in Maguuma. https://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Gliding
The story line doesn’t appear to be essential, frankly. I used the Lev 80 booser for one character and went straight Maguuma without it. But having the story behind you, creates a better atmosphere. There is quite a lot happening in Maguuma and a lot of references to past events.
I kinda like to do Season 2, but sadly, it does cost a bit. I have the gist of it already from asking and reading the wiki.
I will also say I do like the main area quite a lot. Though it does get a bit tedious repeating it several times as I have done. I made the mistake of working on magical characters which simply aren’t very strong solo. I am now working on a Revenent.
I may be wrong, but I have a feeling you need to use the Lev 80 booster to activate gliding and possibly, Maguuma.
If you do, I will say again, suggest you go for a non magical character with good weapons skills.
You may get into a decent group and get the advantages of group play, but what I have found is most experienced players have done everything so often they get bored waiting for and endlessly rezing us beginners.
I’m a new player and feeling much like you seem to.
If I may suggest, concentrate on the story. It will give you a background to frame your play. That’s a person perspective. I like to get lost in the storys and characters, but some don’t.
You don’t say if you have reached maximum Mastery in your hero skills, but if not, then these need to be achieved. Though there is no reason to cover every map, just find each of the hero points and pick them up.
If you haven’t bought the Heart of Thorns upgrade, then think very carefully.
It is necessary to gain access to a large area and most of the latest play.
But it is quite expensive and this game, like similar, only has a couple more years to run. If it’s on special offer, I think I saw it for less than 30 quid, then you might go for it.
If you don’t get Heart of Thorns, then there is still loads to do in the existing areas. I’d be thinking of trying to build up enough to get the Season 2 epics for example.
Also, if you don’t have Heart of Thorns, you get 2 (Or it may be three) characters. Concentrate on one, using the others as extended storage.
If you do buy Heart of Thorns, you gate 6 characters, which will be overwhelming. But you get access to the newer areas, which are a blast. But concentrate on a strong character, say a Revenant. It’s pretty tough in there.
I tried Xpadder with a controller.
It worked fine apart from the camera not scrolling with the character direction.
I’d be running along, turn left, say and see my character side on.
Anyone else had that problem?
I haven’t really used the controller very much because of that.
We have a former WoW player here. * rollseyes *
Started at the bottom! <cute grin>
Having a hard time finding and doing them since new to the game and help would be appreciated
I’d be happy you.
If you send me a PM by clicking my screen name then click Send Spacial.1683 a PM we can arrange a time a place, ingame, to meet up.
I’m sure you already have enough experience of what these are and the problems you have met.
I too am a relatively new player and I hope you won’t take this the wrong way, but I will strongly advise you not to get too involved in this game.
Especially, don’t spend any money on any of the expansions.
It’s actually a really good game, great graphics, some brilliant story play with sensitive and interesting NPCs. Plus some wonderful innovations to smooth things along, such as virtually eliminating the problem of kill stealing.
The big problem with it is, it has become so utterly complicated and finding any decent support or information is almost impossible. This is made all the worse by most players who know what they are doing, being so set in their ways. They push you to the Wiki or other sites that they use and understand, yet are unable to see that you don’t. If you persist too hard they get overly sensitive think you’re being rude. And that’s sad.
Crafting is a significant part of this game as it should be for all of these. While others have tended to reduce or even eliminate its importance, GW2 has maintained crafting as an important function.
Therein lies your first problem. Figuring out how to do it.
Imaging someone learning to drive who knows nothing about a car. They are told to start the ignition, press the throttle, apply the clutch and engage low gear.
What’s ignition, what’s a throttle, what’s a clutch and what’s a gear?
Here, the problem is made worse because most players are so experienced they have become a clique. None seem to understand that new players don’t know anything, not because we are stupid, but because no-one has explained what things are.
You will be repeatedly referred to the wiki. As it stands, it’s OK, but again, so complicated that you are left with more questions than answers.
Using the in-game chat is almost always ignored, inspite of claims to the contrary.
I am quite an experienced game player, WoW, Metin 2, LOTRO, Gekkeiju and others. The issues are common. Elimination of most of the lower level game play so as to rush new players to the higher levels where the profit is to be made from expansions.
GW2 is a good game, probably one of the better of the current generation of adventure games. But the technology is evolving now, more direct player interaction, VR even. Especially, more emphasis on tablets and smart phones.
This generation of adventure games is coming to a close. Most seem to be approaching their endgame stage. I know many are anticipating, winding down in 2018, Turbine for example.
We are in on the tale end here and sadly, the better programmers and game administrators have all moved on.
The reality is, the gaming companies don’t really care now.
Play by all means, but if you don’t buy the latest expansion, you won’t get access to a large area that actually has very little effect upon what is available for free.
You can easily get to lev 85 in the free areas. The only thing you won’t do is glide, which is little more than window dressing really.
I also strongly suggest you stick to the more practical characters, using heavy armour and such. The magical characters seem to be more for support and are really weak.
But as a free player you will have 3 characters. So get a decent warrior or similar, say a Char. then if you fancy it later, you can try a magical character.
Thanks so much for these responses. I will start with the links today.
My current squad of characters are:
Lev 80 Norn Druid
Lev 80 Sylvari Elementialist
Lev 80 Asura Chronomancer. Received the Lev 80 boost given with the Heart of Thorns expansion.
The remaining three are all under 30. A Char, engineer, a Human, Thief, and an Asura, Reverent.
(I had a Necromancer at lev 77 but deleted it.),
I can see from Ballistic’s response I have concentrated on skills which need more experience. As EriskRedLemur points out, many of these professions are more suited to support in group play.
I have tried to follow are large group around the Cursed Shore once. They seemed to be on a general farming expedition for gear to sell. They were led by one character, but I had a problem keeping up and other than a bit of DPS, didn’t contribute very much.
I still think it would be more interesting to be able to link up with less experienced players and learn from collective experience. It is, after all, how all of you got the experience you each have now. But that’s just me.
I started the engineer and Reverent, largely for their abilities to take more hits. But having taken 3 characters to high levels so far, I was becoming bored with the repetition so decided to look for advice.
I may concentrate on the Reverent and Engineer for now and leave the others to stew for a while.
The crafting links are so very welcome. If it is just a long slow grind then so be it, but at least I’ll have some means of knowing I’m on the right track.
Understand about the story line, horses for courses I suppose. Personally, it’s what makes these games so interesting. I’m especially interested to see the differing ways the story line pans out for the Sylvari.
Thanks again for the advice and support.
My magic using characters, especially the Tempest, seem unable to withstand even minor attacks and are utterly unable to deal with many boss’.
The Tempest is Lev 80 and has an armour strength of 2409 based upon the best armour available.
I cannot make any sense of the crafting. I have crafted a huge load of copper items, to boost my level, but an still stuck on 30 novice.
There seems to be a particular demand for various types of blood, which further limits crafting.
I currently have about 500 ores of every metal apart from Orichalcum in storage. Though if initial experience is anything to go by, these will hardly make any real impression.
The buff foods all seem to be more or less the same, varying principally with the length of time they last. They also don’t seem to do very much.
Is this the experience of others?
Caithe is pursuing her Wyld Hunt to protect Glint’s Egg has it taken away from her by the Commander/Player.
I don’t understand why. Can anyone explain?
Also, if the Player is a sylvari, how does it deal with its innate appreciation of the Wyld Hunt and the orders to seize Glint’s Egg from Caithe?
Season 2 seems to be locked and require extra payments. How important is it to the overall story?
Would season 2 answer the missing pieces in the story ?
Why is season 2 locked and chargeable?
Looking For Group. Again, the Wiki is a great resource. You can access it via the ‘Wiki’ link above from these forums.
Most found it boring? One poster said as much. It may be helpful to try not to paint all of a group of players with the same brush.
Good luck.
I have the wiki thank you. Almost as confusing as terms such as LFG.
My apologies of I seemed to be painting anyone. It’s my own frustrations, in no small part as a consequence of several years wasted chasing the Dark Lord through Middle Earth.
C’est la vie!
You would probably have gotten more replies if you’d started a new topic, especially if you called it something like “help with Victory or Death”.
Also the reply you got is good advice. The Mouth of Zhaitan is one of those boss fights that uses very strict mechanics.
Yes, I was reluctant to start a new thread as my experiences of many similar gaming forums is that these tend to get quickly incorporated into something obscure by one of the OCD mods.
If that isn’t the case here, then such a pleasant surprise.
The problem is before I can’t complete picking up the object, before the monster destroys me. I have upgraded my armour as much as I can afford, to nil effect. It’s not that I especially mind having to restart all the time, but I trying to make an impression on Logan or Caithe, and it doesn’t look very cool not to be keeping up.
That, along with the accompany text, led me to conclude there may be a solo or group option.
But I still can’t quite see what the problem would be to ask for a specific beginners forum.
Issues such as these could then be aired without annoying the rest of you.
You may find asking on the forums (no matter the sub-forum), or in-game more satisfying if you don’t take the replies personally.
Just because the one poster found Victory or Death ‘sooo boring’ doesn’t mean all Vets feel the same way.
Next time, try creating your own LFG, and you can explain to the potential party member exacting what you are looking for.
Good luck.
Sadly, it seems most found it as boring, if the avalanche of responses is anything to go by.
An LFG sounds wonderful. If only I knew what in The Pale Tree’s name it meant.
But then that is surely demonstrates the point.
that is what the “Players helping Players” subforum. is for and why it is named as such !
beats me.
But the point is, a forum aimed specifically at beginners, would be a focus aimed at beginners.
The more experienced players would know that their contributions there are intended for beginners.
Then those who find the mundane sooo boring could continue to fan their egos, where they might get the appreciation they desire.
It seems more of a win, win really.
Would it be possible to have a beginners forum for those of us who have not been playing so long, it is now sooo boring?
https://forum-en.gw2archive.eu/forum/game/players/Is-this-a-sociable-game/first#post6397633
There must be many other like me, who would like information, exchanging thoughts and finding or just hooking up to play as a team.
The chat function is incredibly limited. Asking people anything, is almost invariably ignored and the sub forums here have limited information. The forum search function usually returns nul.
Solo content is under-appreciated still in mmos. And no, having other players who have very restricted traintrack playstyle is not fun.
Is there a solo option for the Victory or Death quest?
I have struggled with a lv 80 Tempest and couldn’t manage to destroy the mouth of Zhaitan. Even with that, I was repeatedly defeated in the each of the previous stages.
I’ve tried changing my weapons around, but no improvement.
I’d be really grateful for any pointers.
Thanks for those.
After splashing out on the latest expansion, I found myself, in the form of a diminutive Asura Chronomancer, in the Silverwastes and beyond, discovering that the other races don’t seem to trust the Sylvari and something about a problem with the Pale tree.
I developed a Sylvari elementalist and have it to lev 50 now, anticipating lev 80 and exploring the Silverwastes and beyond as one of those Sylvari. The hope is to gain more insight into these enegmatic creatures and their facinating history.
I’ve been reading up as much as I can about the Sylvari, the Pale Tree, Ventari, Ronan and the association with Mordremoth.
I still a bit haunted by the look on Caithe’s face when the Egg was placed in Tarir.
But at each point I come across more loose ends and look forward to exploring those.
I especially would like to understand more about Destiny’s Edge, but of course, that would only be a start.
<Bangs head on desk, pounding fists in frustration>
Making up for all those years I’ve wasted on such nonsense as Gekkeiju Online, WoW, Metin 2 and Lord of the Rings Online. (Well, not so much Gekkeiju Online, which was fabulous).
I’ve followed RoseofGilead’s link to the time-line which seems a great place to start.
The Wiki is, of course, a great resource. Sadly the search function in the standard Wiki format seems stuck in the dark ages (or 2004). I entered the term The Pale Tree only to get a num return. I needed, of course, to enter Pale Tree.
Not a criticism of those compiling the Wiki by any means. It is common to all Wikis using that template.
Anyway, thanks for the support and the friendly responses.
Thanks all for the great replies. I will look into each.
I have already bought the 3 novels from Amazon. I started Ghosts of Ascalon, because it came first. But I’m currently enjoying Edge of Destiny.
Thanks everyone, once again. If anyone has any further suggestions, these will be welcome, I’m sure by many.
Is there anywhere I can read the story up to the present?
Recently joined Guild Wars 2 and loving it.
Keep coming across references and events that I I don’t know anything about. Referencing the wiki is tedious and more often than not, leads to more questions than answers.
Has the story of Tyria up to the present, been written down anywhere so I can catch up?
