Actually, I got a single fragment after doing the instance with level 38 Guard yesterday. Didn’t occur to me at the time that only 80s are supposed to get them.

Then I went to LA on my level 80 Thief, did Urmaug’s jumping puzzle, and got four fragments for, like, 1/10th the effort. It did seem a little weird.

I suspect his comments were more intended as a “yeah, that would be great for you guys” thing.

Let’s face facts. This company is here to make money, and we’re where that money comes from. Bank slots are proven sellers, and they can increase the amount they offer whenever they need to. It would be hard to get money out of a wardrobe function in the same way.

Their money outweighs our play-ability.

They could get money out of it if it required a T-stone or an equivalent new item from the gem store to place an item in a wardrobe. This has been suggested in every thread about wardrobes I have read.

Yeah. I’ve never spent a cent on T-stones, but I would have no problem shelling out for them if the converted an item into a HoM-style reusable skin.

The other possibility would be costume slots, which they could also charge for. (I think LotRO gave you one slot for free and charged for extras. That wouldn’t touch the storage issue though.

Symbol of Swiftness
To clarify the new Symbol of Swiftness will give you 4 seconds of Swiftness every single pulse regardless of if you have swiftness or not. This is a improvement in many situations and a slight loss in the situation where you were using the Symbol as just a one time buff. I think this makes it feel more like a Symbol, which is good. We are still discussing the idea of it being 5 seconds, but there is some danger of that going pretty high with boon duration.

Jon,

I like a lot of where you’re going with the Guardian here, but I am a little concerned about the Symbol of Swiftness change. Not as a matter of balance but just as a quality of life issue. 4 seconds of swiftness on a 15 second cooldown is pretty much useless as a means of traveling for a solo Guardian, and the symbol is one of the better ways for Guardians to get around. Having to stop and stand in the symbol to get the full ticks of swiftness while traveling long distance is just going to be counter productive and annoying. And I don’t like the idea that this skill is being balanced around the zerg rather than solo players who probably are only running one source of swiftness to begin with.

I’ve actually been enjoying this update more than I expected to. The place is so full of people right now, you can usually find company for every event anywhere near the tower.

I’m having a similar problem here. I usually get close to 60 FPS on medium settings, today it won’t go above 30. Switching to lowest settings, it still won’t go above 25-30, which seems particularly odd. My GPU says its running but it doesn’t feel like its working very hard (not getting very warm and low fan usage). Nothing is running in the background.

I disabled my graphics card and got twice the FPS with the integrated graphics—I was getting 60 FPS on low settings. I thought it was a problem with the card, but running other games had the card running hotter and the fan running (I don’t have anything really demanding on this laptop, so this was just with Torchlight II, but it ran without any problems with all the graphics options turned on). I have an Nvidia GeForce 750M and my laptop is running Windows 8.

I’ve sayed a example of why even this don’t affecting me, isn’t of “not-importance”. Read it.

I’ve not included you in Parisalchuck, I’m only saying that don’t bother me people trying to makes me shut up. In my very opinion, those guys that don’t deserve, don’t should get any rewards. Its exact as being a thief.

But as we don’t have any clarification about the thread, I want to know if Anet suport it or consider it a cheat.

Then, I can simply report those guys doing this, all the times i see it. (If it considered against the rules).

People have been doing this very publicly since day 1. Anet has now introduced consumable items that allow any class, not just mesmers, to offer a port. How could you POSSIBLY think this is something that Anet thinks is against the rules?

And your thief example is a false equivalency. The thief is wrong, not because he gets things “for free,” but because he deprives someone else of them. If people are ported to the end of a JP, no one loses out. There aren’t a finite amount of rewards in those chests, or limits on who can get the achievement.

Inflexible Skin System

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Starfall.6813

Starfall.6813

Its not inflexible…its designed to sell you transmutation stones from the gem store…which are probably one of the best selling items…working as intended.

It’s incredibly inflexible. It’s also clunky to use and doesn’t do anything to make the game more fun for people who care about cosmetics. And it’s been done better by games that were out YEARS before GW2 launched. (LotRO and RIFT, at least.)

Right now, the system doesn’t encourage people to change their armor anymore than they need to. Want to monetize people changing character appearance? Make it easy and fun for the to do so, then find a point to charge a fee for it. A lot of the suggestions in this thread still involve Transmuatation stones ans crystals, either for converting items into skins or for applying skins to armor. So that aspect of the economy can remain intact. In fact, by making the process easier, and preserving appearances and stat gear for people while you do it, you will most likely create more ‘transactions’—i.e., people changing appearance—on which A-net can levy a charge. It would still be a PITA to pay for the stones, but it would be better than what we have now.

Reading through I think two questions have not been answered.

Can we still deposit / remove gold from the guild bank? I would hope so even if it is no longer offered in our own banks.

What happens to the mystic coins, are they going to be ‘account bound’? Currently these are traded to gain access to mystic forge recipes and if they can no longer be sold on the marketplace could be devastating to the community as a whole.

Why would mystic coins become account bound? They are currently stored in the collectables tab, just like crafting mats. I don’t see any reason why this change should affect them.

I’ve finally found a personal game breaker

All my alts are separate, I want them to keep the coins and karma they earn. The other stuff sure but not that. Doesn’t look like there’s any options

Yeah, I know exactly how you feel.

My characters are all separate individuals. There is no reason they need to have their gold and karma pooled together. I want to know what they have earned on their own; if they need to borrow from each other, that is what the bank is for.

Really, so much of the game is already account wide (storage, achievements, etc.) it’s annoying, IMO, to have the lines between the characters blurred even more.

I know most people love it, and it seems like an awesome feature to have available, but I would really like to be able to opt out of it.

I won’t stop playing the game over this, but it makes me really, REALLY unhappy that this is being implemented across the board.

Wooden Chest

This is the kind of stuff I really hate.

I open a Wooden Chest (the ones that spawn randomly while killing enemies as an ‘extra’ reward), and what do I get? A freaking ugly yellow VOTE item… Ok something it’s really really wrong on the loot table. GW2 dev guys, please DO SOMETHING and THINK FIRST.

Thanks

The chests aren’t an extra reward. They drops inside them come from the same loot table and are determined by the same process as the regular drops that are on enemies bodies. They just put rare or exotic drops into a chest to make them more obvious so you’re less likely to miss one.

Even that isn’t always the case. The other day I opened one of the chests and got a Shredded Garment. I don’t know if it was a bug or not, but more than once I have gotten white/blue loot out of those little chests.

This game really needs a proper costume/appearance system. The system we have in place now, with transmutation stones, etc., is terrible. LotRO got this right years ago, you’d think GW2 could put together something better than what we have. Even GW1 did a better job of making costume items user friendly. This is a big, big reason why I don’t buy any cosmetic items from the gem shop.

in Dragon Bash

Starfall.6813

Make sure your gear is appropriate to your actual level – if you are level 30 and your gear is still level 19 you’re going to scale badly from what I can tell and that could be a big part of the problems (especially since at low levels you’re usually just taking whatever drops – not constantly keeping up with your level).

This. The penalty for having out-of-date equipment when upscaled can be a kitten, and you don’t always notice it unless your paying close attention to your gear. (My low level alts are always lagging on some of their gear because I just use drops.) Remember that a level 30 character with level 20 gear who is upscaled to 80 will have worse effective stats than a level 20 character with level 20 gear who is upscaled to 80. So if you’re having trouble with a story instance that has you upscaled (especially if it’s by a lot) make sure your gear is up to date.

Price match only exists because obnoxious consumers would just re-buy and return the higher priced receipt, causing needless paperwork and employee time. Don’t expect any kind of digital sales to offer you that kind of service or you will be repeatedly disappointed.

Exactly. The difference between the gem shop and Target, etc., is that the gem shop doesn’t have a return policy, ever. If you buy something at Target and it goes on sale before the return period ends, they may match the price because they know you could return it and re-buy it anyway. Since all sales are final at the gem shop, there’s no need for them to price match if things go on sale.

You’re almost certainly not going to find a version of the book for sale in PDF format. IMO, reading a book in PDF, especailly on something as small as a phone, is a real pain and not owrth the trouble.

Your best bet is to try Google Play, Amazon, and B&N in their various e-reader stores. Because you are in Brazil, the book may not even be available on the 25th for you even as an e-book, as there may be a separate publisher for overseas markets. E-commerce is weird like that. But if it is available, it will probably be up in one of those three stores. In one of their references to it, Anet mentioned getting it at Amazon, so I’d try that first. You should be able to use any e-reader on your Android phone, barring any kind of region lock because of where you are.

Revert holos HP but keep invulnerability

in Dragon Bash

Posted by: Starfall.6813

Starfall.6813

The thing I liked about the extra HP is that if someone pops the holo by themselves, the fight will actually last awhile. So if you are in the area and see the holo spawn on your map, would have some time to get there before they all go poof. I was just in Gendarran Fields on a very poorly geared 80, and doing them by myself was nontrivial but perfectly doable. I don’t know yet what it is like for chars who are to the level of the zone. But this was a huge improvement over the first days of the event, because you didn’t have to camp the spawn points to avoid having them crushed right away. You could actually move around a bit and have some time to get to the holos when activated.

Thief build power/crit vs condition/crit?

in Thief

Posted by: Starfall.6813

Starfall.6813

Running Condition Damage and Crit together doesn’t make much sense, because Crit doesn’t increase the damage of your condition attacks. I know its on gear in game, but it really only makes sense for certain builds, none of which are terribly great, and the thief Condi builds don’t really get much out of it.

If you want to do a D/D condition build, I am a big fan. (I’m actually switching over my current build to run D/D again, once I have better gear.) I like that DB makes it easy to take on multiple mobs at a time in PvE. (I mostly play PvE, and I wouldn’t recommend using this build in PvP unless you are very good with it.) It can be a little slower than using D/P, etc., but if you round up a group at once and take them all down together, that helps. At 80, I prefer to run Carrion gear, which has Power/Condi/Vit on it.

If you want direct damage, there are a lot of good builds to pick from. I’ve currently been running the D/P & SB set-up that Rin talked about. Good damage, mobility and survivability. You’ll want Power, Precision and Crit Damage, and as much defensive stats as you feel you need to stay alive. (I like to mix in some Valkyrie pieces for extra Vitality.) The Sword/* builds are good too, and have different styles to them. The good thing is, if you decide to go this route, the gear and trait lines will mostly work for any of the weapon sets (with some tweaks) so you can try out the different weapon configurations without having to completely re-spec and re-gear your character. Just play around with everything. I never bothered with D/P after trying it in beta and dismissing it, then picked it up again a couple moths ago and suddenly loved it. Sometimes its hard to tell what you will like until you try it.

I really want to get into Mesmer but..

in Mesmer

Title^

It just feels like something is missing. I used to play a thief for a while, so I thought this would be a good second character for me; but it just feels “off” when i’m using it. I feel like i’m doing it wrong or something. Granted I only got to like lv 5, but just the weapon skills alone feel so different that it’s almost hard for me to grasp. I like the concept of the class, but I don’t understand how to play this properly. How are they at PvE, WvW, and PvP at higher levels?

Ofc it’s different. Or do you want all classes to be the same? And you can’t possibly get the right idea about any of the classes by just leveling to 5.

sigh, you people -_-
I was merely saying I didn’t understand how to play the class as wanted someone to elaborate in it at different phases. again I was only addressing the weapon skills not the entire class. let’s not be “that” guy, if you have nothing nice to say, then just hush. I had a solid grasp on every other class as soon as I picked it up. I’d be able to understand what kind of things I’d be doing with it. I couldn’t grasp it with with mesmer. I only stated my level because someone would obviously ask, not because I level up 5 times and judged the entire class(which I’m not). Only weapon skills, all of which I have. You could’vevsaid something about the various combo fields with the weapon skills or something and that would’ve been great. but no, you want to be “that” guy.

I’m asking early so I don’t waste time leveling something I might not like.

Mesmers are kind of weird. They were the class that took the longest to click for me, (other than Necro, which I haven’t really played yet). My main is a thief. I tried Mesmer a couple times in beta, then again after the game came out, and it never really worked for me. Then a little while ago I rolled another one on a whim and suddenly it just worked for me all of a sudden. Now I love the class—still very low level, but once I’m done leveling another alt, I’m going to start playing her seriously. I think I mostly used Sword/Pistol to start off with, and I did use scepter a bit in the beginning to get used to shattering and stuff. But I really wanted to run GS and Staff, and it was when I tried out the staff again that things clicked for me. So if it doesn’t make sense right away but you like the class, stick with it and be patient. If you still don’t like it by 20 or so, maybe it isn’t for you, but I do think it takes a little longer to find your way with the class than most others. As a thief, I think you will really appreciate the elusiveness you can get with the Mesmer. The combat style is very different in some ways, but the feeling of outsmarting and outmaneuvering your opponents is still there.

Transmutation Stones appreciation thread

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Starfall.6813

Starfall.6813

Just wanted to express my appreciation at being able to keep the look of a certain set of armor, weapons or what have you indefinitely while still being able to level them up as the game goes on. It may seem not seem like a big deal, but it’s a really nice feature, particularly when some higher-level stuff just don’t look as good (though admittedly, my character is currently only in the level 40’s range, so I can’t yet speak to how the very high-level items look like)!

Are there others here who also very much appreciate having Transmutation Stones (or in broader terms, this type of feature in general)? Is this a common feature among MMO’s nowadays or is GW2 still one of the few that has it?

Not only do other MMOs have similar features, they have better versions of the feature, and have had such for years before GW2 even came out. Sadly, GW2 is way behind times here. LotRO and Rift, among others, have appearance customization features that blow GW2’s out of the water. I love the idea of a feature like this, and used it a lot when I played other games, but compared to the competition, the GW2 approach is clunky and not very player friendly. So while I appreciate the fact that we have T-stones in the game at all, I think they could be a lot better than they are now.

Edit: Ninja’d.

How do I complete my achievements now?

in Flame and Frost

Posted by: Starfall.6813

Starfall.6813

So…this is my first post on the GW2 forums, and the first time I’ve had occasion to make my opinions known. That should say something I guess.

I’ve spent the last 12 days working on law school exams and preparing for graduation. Literally every moment of my free time in the last three weeks has been spent not playing GW2. And now I will NEVER, I repeat, NEVER be able to complete my living story achievements, simply because my life didn’t coincide with Arenanet’s scheduling.

In my eight years playing Guild Wars 1 and now GW2, I have never missed an event. Not one. Then again, participating in GW1 events only required logging on for 30 minutes (something I could usually at least spare time to do) and collect some item or do a brief quest.

Now, I don’t have an issue with GW2’s event-based, achievement-awarding events. I think they’re great, when we have a month or so to work on them. But I have a serious issue with giving players 12 days to complete a dungeon’s worth of content. I do have to confess that I started working with a PUG group around 1:00 EST today, but they were atrocious. It took us three hours to get to the end boss, and then everyone just gave up after another hour, meaning I had wasted four hours of my life. That turns out to have been my only chance to get the final three F&F achievements.

The fact that the event has ended doesn’t really bother me in and of itself. What bothers me is knowing that, unless Anet has some reason to give us a flashback event of some kind, which they don’t seem to have any intention of doing, I will NEVER be able to complete the Flame and Frost achievements. Contrast this with the Super Adventure Box, limited time content that people WILL be able to get old achievements for in future releases.

I acknowledge that many people out there will probably just tell me to get a life, or stop taking this game so seriously, or admonish me for not taking time out of my exams to play GW and get the achievements. But I still maintain that scheduling a 12 day window for an activity that requires not just a group, but a competent one, during one of the busiest times of year for the 18 to 24 demographic—Arenanet’s target audience, I would imagine—is a really awful idea. Moreover, it saddens me that I will NEVER have the opportunity to complete my GW2 experience because of this one-time event. I would not be nearly so upset if there were some way to access this content in the future, but so far as we can tell, there is none, and that makes me extremely mad.

I you think this was bad, wait until you start bar review. Worst 2 months of my life. And if you go into private practice…

Because I get really dysphoric watching my character swing his weapon right handed to the point I really don’t think I can play this game.

pressure reduction in PVE, how?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Starfall.6813

Starfall.6813

I do not see how conditions or boons can help reduce pressure, especially when getting hounded by multiple mobs.

And i have not played COH nor WOW to any great degree, i am talking about pressure in the sense of workload/information flow a player has to deal with.

Making one or more mob ignorable greatly reduce said workload, but i do not see any amount of conditions that can do so for any useful durations.

Banish (Guardian hammer skill) is great skill for getting someone out of your face while dealing with his buddy. Black Powder (Thief offhand pistol) is a great skill for AOE blinding everything around you while you try to kill them.

Most CC type skills in GW2 are not about taking a mob out of the fight while you fight another mob from start to finish. They are about slowing the enemy down long enough to thin the numbers and make the fight manageable.

Boons and conditions like protection, regen, and weakness also help. As you get more experience, you will start working whichever skills you have into your playstyle more naturally. As the athletes say, the game will slow down for you.

If you’re playing a ranger, the one shortbow attack is a great skill to have in certain situations. But your biggest CC asset is your pet. They can be a pain to deal with, but they will take hits for you and give you room to work if you keep them alive.

Gear Level vs Character Level (pre-80)

in Players Helping Players

Posted by: Starfall.6813

Starfall.6813

From what I have observed and learned from chatting with friends, the strength of your gear is based on a ratio of Gear Lvl vs True Character level. Now if you’re not down leveled, then it doesn’t matter (beyond being inherently weapon like you would expect). Yet when you do have your level reduced, your gear has its effectiveness reduced. It seems like the % multiplier is based on the expectation that you’re wearing current that’s equal to your current character level. If it isn’t, then the reduction multiplier will hit you even harder.

Case in point, try being 80th with a couple of different weapons. You’ve got a 65th Yellow weapon and an 80th Blue weapon. Then you walk into a lvl 20 area. Both of these weapons gets hit with a reduction multiplier that would be balanced around you wearing a full set of 80th gear. Now look at your Yellow weapon. Even though it is at the same artificial level are the Blue weapon, you’ll see that its +stats are much lower. Why? The issue is that the Yellow weapon is at a level spread of <True Level -15> while the Blue weapon is at a level spread of <True Level -0>.

This pretty much sums it up, as far as I know. Unless it was changed with the recent changes to level scaling—I haven’t looked at it since then. Generally, even if you’re playing downscaled, you want your gear to be at or close to your true level.

Great personal attacks guys, way to be mature.

Just so you know I did what Unspecified.9142 suggested, its done.

Took me a bit and I am still waiting to get back into WvW because I had to leave to do it. (Our BL was full so no I could not move there to do it)

What you all don’t understand is that BECAUSE people complained about having to do WvW to get their monthly Anet changed it and because of other similar complaints made it so that people could do various things from a list, yet for monthly we don’t have that option. It may come later, but its not here either by design or by omission it doesn’t matter, it simply isn’t here.

It isn’t a matter of how fast you can do something or how simple or complicated it is. Anet has said they want daily/monthly to be something you accomplish during your normal gameplay. When people that hate PvP couldn’t get monthlies done because of the WvW requirement they looked at it and made a change. Now they have made a change in the opposite direction, there are a lot of people, so far 90% of my guild (the other 10% either did it or haven’t logged today) that do not do anything other than PvP and will not do anything other than PvP because that is why they play. So what if you don’t like that, that’s what they like. And now once again Anet is stopping them from getting their monthly because no they haven’t gotten monthly if it meant anything other than WvW.

All we want is to be able to play the way that we have fun all the time. Isn’t that why you play a game? It doesn’t matter if its an hour or 10 minutes that is taken away from our game experience, because it has still been taken away.

As for “not being required” well, how else am I or others going to keep up with everyone else getting ascended items if we can’t do the monthly everyone that doesn’t mind wasting a little time and crafting can do?

I have never once completed the Monthly in this game, due to the WvW kills element. It wasn’t “something I could accomplish during my normal gameplay.” Did you hear me complaining? No. If I wanted to do it, I would have done it, but it wasn’t how I wanted to spend my time in the game, so I didn’t. Get over it.

Down-Leveling

I love dynamic leveling. It is the best feature of the game for me. I tend to play slowly going through areas, taking my time exploring, etc. So in games like LotRO, WoW (especially after Cata, good lord) I always tended to outlevel the areas I was in and by the time I got to the end of the quest chains, everything was easy and boring. Honestly, the no-griefing angle is just gravy for me, the best thing about dynamic leveling is how it lets me play the game without worrying about what level I am or how fast I’m going.

That being said, the dynamic leveling doesn’t get everything. I think they adjusted some of this in the last patch, but it didn’t (IIRC) scale all the stats from your traits and stuff, and of course as you level you get more skills, traits, experience with your class, etc. So I still find that if I just want to mindlessly annihilate a bunch of mobs, I just need to go to a zone that’s sufficiently below my current level. Which is nice because there are days when you just want to blow off steam and kill the heck out of something.

I’d like this set

Any idea what armor that is? I really like it.

Are the shots about the female Norn or about the Priestess of Lyssa?

I don’t think you can get the armour that the Priestess is wearing, think it’s just a model.

About the female Norn, of what I can see:
Shoulders: Feathered armour set
Chest: Winged armour set
Gloves: Winged armour set
Leggings: Winged armour set

Yeah, I was asking about the Norn. I assume the Priestess’s armor isn’t in the game. Thanks, I haven’t made a light armor class yet, but they have some of the nicer armor sets.

"Sell on Trading Post" profit from ignorance.

IIRC, “Projected Profit” is just the amount you would receive on the sale, minus the 10% cut the TP takes. It’s what you will actually get once you go to pick up your payment. So it isn’t a “profit” in the normal sense of the word, since it doesn’t factor in how you acquired the item. It also doesn’t account for the listing fee. But the listing fee is posted on the same screen as the “Projected Profit” so you can subtract the first from the second and figure out how much you’re making on the sale (again, disregarding any cost you may have incurred getting the item in the first place).

I opened 20 wintersday boxes.

All I got was temporary tonics. I did not get a single mini-pet. How do you explain that?

You have lousy luck? What exactly is there to explain? The results of opening a box are random.

I think in the future, they should ditch hearts completely (if they haven’t already), and substitute them for tasks at a bigger scale, with a lot of diverse accomplishments, that go from exploring to doing events to doing silly tasks, so you can complete said tasks.

Also, lots and lots of tight, story-driven quests. Have event chains tell stories from a global prespective AND require party-coordination to go anywhere, and have party instances unlocked at the end of those event chains to flesh out and conclude the story archs at a more personal level. I’m not talking about the main story, but many narrative sequences spread through the game that makes us care for those areas, that makes us care for the characters of those areas, that makes us seriously interact with the players exploring those areas, and that offers us a more diversified, creative gameplay content especifically designed to enhance the storytelling.

Also far rewards at the end that can only be obtained once (every week or so), so that players will want to do them all, without having to grind any of them several times.

Have those mechanics be required for map completion, and if the playerbase becomes a problem, there’s always solutions: extra incentives, an entire redesign of the server system, or even heroes/ henchmen.

IIRC, that’s how the game was designed originally. And hearts were only added because players freaked out when they had nothing there to direct them. I love the open feel of the game, and being able to just pick a direction and go. But some people need a little more structure.

Please bring this back. it was incredibly convenient, and if there were graphical issues in Preview, I can’t imagine that anyone really cared. Not being able to use preview for all armor types is a real PITA for those of us with alts.

@Phantom:

@Tulisin. No, less viable does not equate to bad. Less viable means less viable. I run sword-dagger as my main build. Not once did I state it was a bad setup. It is clearly not as efficient as dagger-dagger or sword pistol in any case though. Stick to the facts.

Do you know what “viable” actually means? You say you run S/D as your build. You say it isn’t bad. Therefore, it must be viable. If it wasn’t viable, you presumably wouldn’t be able to do anything in game with it. That’s what “not viable” means. If you say something is not viable, that means yes, it’s bad.

And something can’t be “less viable.” It either is or it isn’t. It’s like being “less dead” or “less pregnant.”

I think it’s a pretty terrible system myself. I would really prefer something along the lines pf the appearance slots in LOTRO or Rift. The T-stones are so clunky by comparison.

As long as you don’t use the same email and password that you use to log in to GW2. If you do, then the hacker can just log into your email and authenticate themselves.

it would also help if females did not have absurdly long legs in this game.

i don’t get video game designers’ contempt for female bodies, anyway.

why would you think they have a contempt for the female body? It’s stylised. Even the male toons are stylised such.

That’s like asking why the Masters never sculpted fat, short people… why are they all Adonis-like with 6 packs and muscle definition everywhere?

Not a fan of Reubens, I guess?

Yeah, the random loot for completing a zone is pretty annoying. I would really rather just get crafting mats and T-stones than loot that my character can’t use. I wouldn’t think it would be that hard to at least make the equipment received for zone completion compatible with the profession of the character.
