since this is the hot and poppin’ thread…
considering the new gear circumstances, i personally feel it would be decent of arenanet/ncsoft to reimburse players their gem, gold and/or karma expenditures or provide free ascended equipment upgrades for those who purchased any exotic gear.
i have enjoyed many aspects of the game, spent a considerable amount of $ to support it and i’m not opposed to gear progression (except when the words “mystic forge” are used), but i never would have invested in 2nd tier gear, skins, runes, order gear, transmutaions and so on, had i know about ascended gear.
i know that i’m not in this boat alone, so hopefully the devs make the right decisions while going foward with ascended gear for their customers.

I’m completely confident that fine transmutation stones will work on ascended gear too.
i’m sure that will be a great feature, but that alone will not resolve the issues at hand.

i personaly don’t mind gear progression, but using the words “must” AND “mystic forge” are not getting me really excited.

i like the look of the medium trooper gear (chest looks like the starter spvp piece) and chose a few of the trooper pieces as quest rewards, but i don’t believe that there were trooper boots and gloves offered along the way so…
were the boots and gloves given a different name than trooper?
did i just not notice that they were offered as quest rewards?
is there a possibility to buy the remaining matching trooper pieces from normal vendors or order/faction vendors?

i’m enjoying many aspects of this game except the way y’all have implemented the gem store and crafting. i understand that the entire in-game economy is designed around getting players to spend $, and i don’t mind tossing $ at this game, but overall the gem store items/offerings seem too skimpy for the price and crafting is way more frustrating (more cost and time effective to buy item(s) outright as well) than “fun”.
with that written, here is some food for thought on making gem purchases more valuable/desirable and crafting more “fun” for players while also being more profitable to you (arenanet/ncsoft).
gem store stuff…
• name change.
• appearance change (ok make over kit coming).
• more armor skins.
• weapon skins.
• weapon and armor aura/particle effects (legendary items would need an additional non-game breaking hook to do this).
• pve mounts (also obtainable through event/loot drops, accomplishments and all in-game currencies).
• double the current time of boosters.
• post-holiday event item offerings (inflated gem cost rate)
crafting stuff…
• “½ mats needed (1minimum) to craft x (non-legendary )items” booster. 30min timer
• ability to craft unique weapon skins, armor skins, back pieces/packs, capes, visible jewelry and bags,”floating elemental jewelry” (see elementalist creation screen), food that provides temporary skills and traits, armor/personal auras, weapon particle effects, …
• improved perks and bonuses for focusing on 1 crafting profession.
• runes and sigils level 61-80
• craft for self or sale mechanics. example… crafting for self option would require less mats, provide an additional unique bonus to the item and be bound to the character or account.
final thoughts…
stop being cheap if you want players to keep spending $. there are much better ways to earn $ while rewarding players and enhancing their experience all at the same time. one example… i’m fairly certain you would make more $ overall (while leaving a lot less bad tastes in players mouths) by selling the halloween weapon and armor skins on the gems store than you did with the “buy key for random chance” scheme.
keep player retention, “fun” factor and willingness to continue to fork over $ in mind for the long term. there are many ways to make economy and crafting improvements for both you and the players, but it’s not through the current greed- gouge-grind- guessing-gambling wars 2 gameplay.
*disclaimer… these are just ideas, not the ultimate economy fixer uppers. the underlying message about the current state of the game economy is my main focus here.

some of these things have been discussed, just throwing them out there anyway because they are not in-game yet.
• territory (only) map dragon alerts.
• display all zone events on current location area map.
• there are many awesome combat mechanics except for combat travel suppression. could it be removed? (never understood the reason for suppression. with it removed, everyone is on the same page anyway right? you can still bypass pve mobs, just at an annoyingly slow speed).
• remove equipment repairs in pvp.
• have items stack when clicked to transfer from bag to bank inventory. (crafting mats stack but other items don’t.).
• add karma and dungeon vendors in home cities and consolidate all purchasable items by level.
• option to zoom camera out farther so we can save our eye balls some and lessen the need for aspirin (jormag dragon event is a nice distance).
• armor and weapon preview screen at trading post.
• new weapon sets.
• better search/sort options for the trading post (in the works).
• holiday special events need npc and map directions and less guess/google work.
• separate burst and crit damage rules for pvp. example… tone down burst damage across the board and have crit damage apply only to npcs and structures/objects.
• more weapon abilities that can be customizable in the attack bar like traits. example… each weapon would have sets of attacks for single target, ranged aoe, pbaoe, conditions, wells and so on, that players can mix and match for more diverse attack options and builds.
“legendary” character progression stuff…
• 3rd “weapon at ready” option.
• traits from other profession.
• skills from other profession.
• additional weapon proficiencies.
• crossover weapon skills.
• profession specific skills, traits, weapon bonuses, permanent stat boosts, …
