things i would like to see tracked…

*zerg movement trends.
*who captured what and when.
*uncontested points.
*npc only defended points.
*supply yak movement and health.
*player numbers per map per server.
*dominating server inside jumping puzzles.
*amount of players currently not engaged in combat.

i personally feel that the core of all spvp (wvw and dungeons as well) problems lies in the way professions and combat were designed.

i personally enjoy the freedom of movement while attacking and the added tactics of the dodge and rez mechanics, but the limitations to powers/skills/traits, powers/skills/traits at hand/ready, counter attack powers/skills/traits, viable weapons choices for most situations and lack of powers/skills/traits customization outside of gear choices are my main issues. gw2 combat is built like a limited and bad console game so naturally it won’t hold the interest of complex and competitive players who enjoy a robust combat and character/profession experience.

No logic behind having "paid" tournys?

It’s to filter out bad people. Maybe you’ve never played free tournaments, but usually I end up facing a team of rank 1s 90% of the time.

I have NEVER paid for tickets and I have more than I will ever need sitting in my bank just from dailies and crafting.

anet can make money by offering other things specifically for spvp.

if ranked tournaments were free, i’m pretty sure a lot these “bad people” (who don’t want to buy gems or grind pve for ticket money) would probably crush most of the current competition and we would already be on a much better meta path.

unfortunately though, in protecting this precious economy, hosting these super secret tests has made major parts of this game suffer for it.

Guild Wars 2 wants to satisfy a maximum of players by providing a lot of different aspects to the game.

Right now it has:
- Open World PvE (hearts, events…)
- “End-Game” PvE (dungeons, fractals…)
- Massive PvP (WvW)
- Competitive PvP (sPvP)

Yet if ArenaNet wants to satisfy/attract more gamers, there are a lot of available solutions. Let me show you some.

- HOUSING : Housing is very researched in MMOs, few are the ones who propose it, and none are really blockbusters. GW2 is the ideal blockbuster for that.

- HALL OF MONUMENTS: I’m saying HoM because I think that this concept was unique to GW1. Proposing this kind of place to collect skins and achievements can reinforce all the others aspects of the game.

- GUILD VS GUILD: I’m not a fan of guilds, neither PvP but a lot of players seems to be requesting this and it could be a good idea to develop a few maps to start this.

- SANDBOX IN PVP: ArcheAge showed it ; sandbox is insanely awesome (build your own forts, collect ressources around, improve them, see them grow bigger and bigger…). And GW2 is only two steps away from that ; you can’t build your own forts, it’s already all-made. You could allow to build our forts on pre-choosen slots and make us able to cuts trees/mine rocks around to get ressources.

these would be cool features but anet needs to get all profession and combat related stuff figured out first, then the rest will fall in place.

1 iduelist 2-3k + bleed
1 gs autoattack 3k
1 iberserker 3-5k +cripple
whatever that hammer throwing lameness is1-2k
another autoattack 3k
shatter all them phantasms/clones – who [expletive deleted by anet forum nazis] knows im usually too [expletive deleted by anet forum nazis] at that time to care 1-3k
mirror image + another shatter 1-3k + confusion
another autoattack 3k

all this in what 5 seconds? all this before i even know what the [expletive deleted by anet forum nazis] is going on and [expletive deleted by anet forum nazis] trying to find a [expletive deleted by anet forum nazis] target but cant cause after all this [expletive deleted by anet forum nazis] dps at maximum range… they can still stealth and [expletive deleted by anet forum nazis] blink and all manner of stupid [expletive deleted by anet forum nazis] and all the while anet wants to play games with my targeting system!

why not just make skills different in the different game modes? like in Guild wars 1, when you entered pvp, the skills changed or behaved differently in function. why not just change skills based on game mode or type?

i’m sad they haven’t announced new weapons/new swappable skills for existing weapons/new utilities and elite skills. This is what i want the most! Not use the same utilities/weapons weeks after weeks of playing no matter if i’m in wvw, dungeon or spvp… Don’t take 1 year to release new skills for us to play with or you will lose people.

what both of you have mentioned are my biggest concerns for the game currently.

i’m am starting to feel that we will be stuck with things “as is” for a long time without any meaningful or robust changes to gameplay mechanics, individual character performance, builds, options and such.

we will probably get some minor tweaks while the main focus will be for players to buy gems to purchase gear that changes build performance.

tldr…
this console game calling itself an mmo probably won’t change much so get use to key 1, dodge rolls, self heals, run to tank while teams dps spam, die-rez-die-rez support, making cool “me too” pvp videos and buying moar gems for junk.

John Sharp(or was it Mike) said that they could not get into that…could not give specifics. Which leads me to believe that they have some plans and idearrsss. I think in the next 6 month’s we’ll see new abilities. Definitely.

Yes yes, I/we know. GW2 is a mmo where endgame gear stats are capped for all, and easy to get to. Its all about finding better looking gear, and stand out in the crowd..

This, in essence, is what you’re trying to say.

Simply put, GW2 is not the game for you if you want to feel more powerful by joining a gear rat race with ever-increasing stat requirements.

It is not designed to be that, and it will never be that. It’s about having fun with friends/guildies and getting more skill, more experience and understanding of the game – not more gear.

Play something else.

You can come back when you’ve stopped attaching your real life ego to gear in a game.

the gear rat race to increase character performance is already here and more racing to come with ascended gear.

what do you think is going to happen when there are level increases? more gear rat races perhaps?

i highly doubt this game will ever have a robust non gear related character development system because it is much simpler to add gear progression and call it a month. also, gear progression can be sold through the bltc so expect to see a lot more gear treadmills.

i know you didn’t mention the manifesto but if you are still going by that pr advertising junk then i’ve got a really nice bridge to sell ya.

i know everyone is entitled to their opinions but i’ve gotta comment on the 2 quotes below.

“The learning curve for PvP in this game is incredibly steep.”

“I actually find gw2 pvp the be the deepest combat system ive seen ever in an mmo.”

i came from an mmo that had more options, abilities, customization, depth, dynamic play and learning curves in only one archetype offered than in all of the professions combined here.

it is pretty obvious that combat in this game is balanced around open world pve and is a poor mush up of an mmo and console game.

Ah yes! I’m sure everyone will agree with you once you state the name of this magical game. Or maybe there is a reason you left it out? This is like choose your own adventure. In my mind it’s Hello Kitty! Maybe Puzzle Pirates?

oops i should have said 2 archetypes.

quick count examples…

city of heroes

archetype- controller
9 primary power sets- 81 powers
13 secondary power sets- 117 powers
10 power pool options- 44 powers
9 ancillary/ epic power pools- 50 powers
incarnate abilities- 441

that is 733 total powers to chose from and 292 are individually customizable.

gw2 ranger
38 attacks from weapons
37 skills
60 traits

that is 135 total “powers” to chose from that are globally customized by the type of gear you have.

so as far as “powers”/abilities and such is concerned, 5 combined professions in gw2 matches up with what was offered for only 1 of the 10 core archetypes in coh.

it’s not really necessary, no major needed changes were made to make the ranger more competitive or versatile.

edit- at some point i’m sure rangers will have some major improvements, but that won’t be for a long while.

still no fix for those obstructed bugs with our bows…..

now our shots will hit 50% of the time instead of 10%

obstruction is most likely still present but arrow speed is faster now.

remove/purge conditions on you from players or npcs that are killed.

auto loot perk as a cash only purchase. yes cash only, not gem or convert gold to gems purchase, to help prevent gold sellers/botters from getting this QoL feature.

i know movement signets are getting a buff, but i feel base movement speed should be upped or combat travel suppression should be removed.

customizable UI.

weapons, skills and signets QoL…

*1,2,3,4 and 5 are weapon skills.
*6 is heal skill.
*7,8,9,0 and the minus key are utility skills (max 3 signets, traps and such).
*plus key is the elite skill.
*option to rearrange all of the above skills or at least weapon skills.
*3rd weapon swap option.

A recent interview (http://gamingbolt.com/guild-wars-2-interview-we-talk-to-areanet-about-how-the-mmorpg-has-been-doing-post-launch) indicates (p2) that no one’s currently working on a console port. They only reference it as something a small team used to be looking at, not as a current project, definitely not a priority.

now hopefully we can get some major improvements to combat, skills/powers and the ui that are fitting for a pc mmo.

big mess of zerg, die and rez over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over…

Not exactly. The complaint I heard the most was that it was just a little tedious with the gigantic HP pools. Sure the difficulty may have been a bit much for the mindless zerg players, but the difficulty was actually really easy. I think I may have died two times over three runs (not counting the two times I glitched through the floor and fell into the lava at the end before the floor even broke open).

Too be fair, if you aren’t used to large scale combat in this game (culling, invisible enemies killing everyone), then that is a bit unfair. But for people that play WvW, or even take part in big karma trains, invisible enemies that kill everything if you aren’t careful is not something new. Also, the first couple times you get hit by a gigantic telegraphed AoE death attack (either red circles, green goo, or rolling/jumping karka) that could be forgiven as well… but after that you shouldn’t be complaining about endlessly dying.

But alas, the topic of skill gating versus treadmill/grind gating content has been discussed a lot on this forum recently, so I won’t go further into that.

But yeah, trial accounts getting those kind of drops is kind of ridiculous. Had we known I bet everyone would have had their three bonus accounts running, whether with someone else at the controls or not.

i understand and agree with you. i was overgeneralizing things to sum up what i felt about the event.

between culling, some 1-2 shot deaths, a few unavoidable mass wipes, over the top hp… it was all really blah for me. overall it seemed poorly put together.

Jammed overflows, a 2hour long event that wipes huge groups of people endlessly, precursors and exotics going to trial accounts??? Arenanet, I have heard you made a game once called Guild Wars but I find that hard to believe because this game and this event show your total lack of development and thought. GW2 is really starting to feel like all of us are being trolled every time we log in.

anet keeps dropping the ball. the entire event was a big mess of zerg, die and rez over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over…

pretty nice of anet to give some trial accounts a few hundred gold headstart.

i know they are different genres but there is a night and day feel to gameplay, combat, character performance and animations between both of these games by ncsoft.

obviously these two game will never be alike, but with superior tech available and the talented staff at anet i don’t see why the feel of gameplay, character performance, combat, instances/dungeons, and enemy encounters are not a ton better or even on par with a game released way back when.

Because obviously the only way to make a boss fight in a MMO is to take a normal enemy, increase their HP through the stratosphere and give them the ability to one-shot everything.

MMOs in general should just die out already. GW2 is the final nail in their coffin.

at this point i feel anet should stop trying to be innovative and fully go back to mmo roots because it does not seem like they can do “different” and “good” at the same time.

there is nothing fun or interesting about getting killed by boss attacks in 1 or 2 hits and the waiting for a rez tactics at all. if you are going to keep this type of gameplay style then you should up the teams to 10 and provide proper tank and heal specs for each profession. considering you are gradually turning fun into frustration and gameplay to over grind, i’m sure tossing in some trinity dynamics would be appropriate at this point.

i do not care if there are quirky ways to defeat things, the damage spam, dodge, die, rez and reset over and over mechanics are just plain terrible. also, the current self heals are pathetic compared to incoming damage and healing wells are only so useful when you are constantly needing to dodge roll out of them.

i hate to say it this way but bad mechanics are bad. i’m not asking to steam roll harder content but this type of stuff is just ridiculous.

clean things up.

i’m a little late to the party but i wanted experience more of the game and hold out until this patch went live to see where things were headed.

gw2 has tons of potential, is a decent f2p game but not worth the cash and time investment currently. hopefully they can create a long term win/win situation sooner than later.

Man, it was definitely worth the monetary investment even at launch. The time investment was perfectly reasonable too.

Now that time investment is looking to be heading FAR out of hand.

i should have been clearer.

yes it was definately worth the initial purchase and as a f2p game but not so much with what i spent on other things. i know they want and need money, and players (like myself) are willing to spend money, but i don’t see players (or myself) spending cash for the long run with things as is.

Thanks for your post. I have stated everything you’ve stated in the past… I’m glad people are actually now starting to realize what I saw a few months back.

I hope we get more posts like this so ArenaNet can wake up and give the community what they want.

*over grind for just about everything.
*low reward rates.
*too many forms of currency.
*mystic forge guessing and gambling game for recipes and items.
*crafting more headache than what it’s worth.
*gem store offerings are mostly over priced junk.
*monthly ??? achievements.
*combat starting to feel extremely lackluster.
*lack of profession balance and the performance extremes.
*extremely limited combat mechanics, attacks, skills, effects… 1,1,1,1,4,1,1,1,2,1,1,1,1,5,1,1,1,1,1,skill,1,1,3,2,1,1,1,1 swap 1,1,1,3,1,skill,1,1,1,1,1,4,1,1,1,1,1,5 swap 1,1,1,1,1,1,1,1,1,1,1,1,1,…
*dungeons/instances are very blah and do not have difficulty scaling/settings.
*a bunch more of the same old boring stuff.

so…

*the gear treadmill is not the problem, it’s the over grinding associated with obtaining said gear. so cut the over grinding out and make it more reasonable for players to progress with gear.
*increase reward rates.
*condense the currencies to coin, gems, karma and influence or have a reasonable currency exchange.
*make all recipes purchasable with the various currencies.
*convert the mystic forge casino to a mystic upgrade machine (x karma + x skill points + x mystic coins + item = new and improved item).
*cut back on the required mats for many items.
*have better gem market offerings (armors, weapons, trinkets, recipes…) and sales.
*sell all in game currencies on the market purchasable with gems.
*stop being cheap with gem item purchases and gold exchange rates.
*spruce up classes, weapons, skills, combat, effects, animations, tone down the extremes, add weapon attack/ability customization (see skills and traits swapping)…
*instance/dungeon scaling for solo and group play.

disclaimer

i have enjoyed this game up until recently and invested a lot of $ so far supporting it. my excitement is fading fast so i’m just tossing out some food for thought here. not saying these ideas are the perfect fix but like many, i’m tired of the over grind, mystic casino and underwhelming combat dynamics and feel. there are many players who want something innovative and not disguised as innovative. with the way things are going though, this will be a short term game that never truely lived up to the hype or potential.

although extemely dated (and closing down in a couple weeks), city of heroes by ncsoft is light years beyond (while still flawed) in the class/profession, combat dynamics, abilities/powers, versatility, customization and instance/dungeon departments. althought city had struggled because it was not based on swords, boards and dragons, it was innovative and able to capture that “heroic” feeling for players. perhaps you should hire some of the old city crew to assist here or look at that game for more inspiration to give major parts of gw2 a makeover. also, have more than 2 people working on professions and combat. it’s not fair to them or us so stop being cheap on development support with the most important aspects of the game.

there is no doubt that y’all have worked hard and want this game to thrive for the long run, but it seems that things are going in the wrong direction.

Thoughts on Ascended Gear? [Merged threads]

since this is the hot and poppin’ thread…

considering the new gear circumstances, i personally feel it would be decent of arenanet/ncsoft to reimburse players their gem, gold and/or karma expenditures or provide free ascended equipment upgrades for those who purchased any exotic gear.

i have enjoyed many aspects of the game, spent a considerable amount of $ to support it and i’m not opposed to gear progression (except when the words “mystic forge” are used), but i never would have invested in 2nd tier gear, skins, runes, order gear, transmutaions and so on, had i know about ascended gear.

i know that i’m not in this boat alone, so hopefully the devs make the right decisions while going foward with ascended gear for their customers.

i understand there may be some different suggestions but arenanet will go foward with ascended gear so that leaves very few options for those who have invested a lot time, $ and game currency.

If they do go forward with that crap idea introducing gear grind, making my time and money investment so far obsolete, by breaking their promise what sold me on the game in the first place – i have only one option left. No more of my money for that company.

I enjoyed the game a lot so far and that last option would make me sad, but i will not keep supporting a scam.

i don’t mind some gear progression but i am a lot more on your side of things.

if ascended stuff goes foward then the right thing to do is reset players currencies or offer free upgrades. by doing so the devs will save face and show their customers they want to keep their business.

also, hopefully this new gear will help protect us from the 40k insta death hits by dungeon critters as an added bonus

I agree. I didn’t spend any money on Masterwork gear and now that Exotics are essentially in the same class, I feel I have wasted a lot of gold. Not completely of course, because I still have the skins, but I did spend a lot of gold purely for the stats I wanted. The blog did mention complimentary Ascended and Legendaries, so here’s hoping we get compensated a little.

i personally would have purchased all rare gear and used it until i had full sets of ascended stuff. after that i would have started the process of purchasing runes, skins, order gear, transmutations and such.

complimentary is great of them but it do not think it will compensate for wasted time, $ and game loot.

i like this game and am hoping that arenanet will make the right decisions so it becomes a win/win situation for all parties inviolved.
