I hope ascended Gear is the Last Step in terms of Gear Treadmill, please Colin, don’t troll around with this.

If they add anything after ascended, I am done with GW2. I didn’t play GW2 for gear treadmill.

I would assume that legendary armor would be the same stats as ascended, since that seems to be the route they are taking….no gear treadmill. Either way, I’m super pumped for when it rolls out.

iirc you will be able change the stats on legendary gear to match any ascended gear stat make up. so if you wanted to go zerker or pvt or all stat… and so on, you will be able to switch things up according to whatever stat combos are available.

could be wrong or from a bad dream so don’t hate me if this info is incorrect.

Why not try to come up with solutions to make the combat in gw2 better rather than just telling everyone how shallow it is/comparing it to other games?

Have we established that the OP needs to l2p?

The secret of Guild Wars combat is that the abilities you use most aren’t actually named. They’re “neat tricks”, combos that you have to figure out for yourself by combining the named abilities, swapping weapons, exploiting your own or others’ fields, etc.

For example, as a Mesmer, I often use a “thing” that isn’t found anywhere in the manual: I press one key which forms a combo field, then I press another key which creates an illusion at the target’s location and grabs its attention, then I press another key to leap through the combo field, immobilize my target, and lay down some serious hurt with a powerful attack which requires another key. But that combo field can also be used for other purposes, like controlling mob positioning.

Likewise, with every profession, there are loads of “things” like this that you can discover for yourself. Even the Warrior, the paradigm of “dumb” combat has a lot of “neat tricks” of its own, which, again, are not documented anywhere. You have to discover them.

That’s the interesting thing about GW2 combat, the actual real thing isn’t documented. Sure, you can spam a few buttons robotically and do ok – the game is designed to be forgiving. But the combat system has a lot of headroom to get more and more skillful with.

it’s unfortunate that you don’t understand my original post. if you plan on commenting again then I strongly suggest you reread my posts and give yourself time to think and absorb what i have written. also, if you consider combo effects and undocumented “neat tricks” as deep profession designs and gameplay, then we are on much different levels of experience and expectation.

Sorry, what? Care to elaborate on that? I must be misunderstanding that, I don’t think my Guardian has ever tried to convince me buying gems.

Also “limitations” a.k.a. rules are present in every game. Would magic the gathering be better if you had your whole deck in your hand?

I love the “combat is shallow” argument. What they’re really saying is “I only have to manage 1 bar and not 38943 of them with convoluted and unneeded skills and bloat.”

Basically, GW and GW2 get rid of the bloat and streamlines combat. It’s optimal and one of the best I’ve ever dealt with.

apparently you didn’t read my post and don’t understand it. no that’s not what i’m saying. essentially gw2 cut the fat and meat leaving only the bone. it was nice of them to provide some armor and gear dressing for the bone, but it still a bone and that bones. the profession design is for their convenience not the players enjoyment. sure there a few choices to build your character outside of gear but ultimately they designed professions around getting the end user to break out their credit card. this will be even more evident when ascended and legendary gear is in place. players don’t mind spending cash for their character or to support a game, but the problem here is that players are getting extremely low ROI comparatively. sorry but when a developer spends more time and resources on temporary content and more effort trying to gobble cash from players, the least that could be done is to give customers a better bone with some meat on it.

limitations are optimal? no they are limitations. the only things optimal here are using your auto attack to do damage, the ability to move while attacking and that you can play most of the game managing a few buttons while you watch tv or talk on the phone. i highly doubt you would complain about having a few extra buttons that made more complete and interesting weapon sets, having more weapons to use, the ability to customize secondary effects on weapons and skills, more professions to play, cross profession skills to use…

is gw2 better than a bunch of mmos out currently? sure, but it doesn’t mean that professions don’t need a lot of improvement. to say otherwise is silly and does nothing to improve on the most essential aspects of a combat oriented game.

We often get players who do not want to play GW2 and wish they were playing some other MMO. Those often come here to complain about the GW2 combat system, and to point how ArenaNet needs to change it so it’s exactly like the system in their favourite MMORPG.

OP, what MMO would you rather be playing right now?

I like this game. I sunk $700 usd to date but professions and combat are not impressive or living up to potential. things could be tremendously better in the above areas.

finally, for long run player retention, it would be a good idea to look up those old coh build planners and start developing accordingly.

gw2skills.net/editor is better than mid’s tool because its browser based, I don’t get how you can think coh’s combat was more complex than this game unless you never played some of the clearly OP builds that game had. I had a couple of perma-doms and my favorite was plant/psy with his 1 button cc that locked down entire spawns indefinitely, was cc proof, had capped regen and defense, and could clear huge spawns with just a couple attacks.

What class do you play in this game that has you seeing the combat kitten simplistic?

not talking about better build planners, i’m talking about better “professions”, powers, weapons, customization options, lots of other stuff….

if you are telling me that this game can’t get better then I respectfully disagree.

I just think OP is being lazy with his class and not properly traiting or utilizing the right utilities.

Take for example an ELE. An ele is incredibly diverse with the different attunements. Heck, you can even drop a hammer and a GS for extra skills.

I can utilize the limited buttons, uninteresting skills and utilities, swapping and long cool downs just fine my friend. just saying that there is a lot of room for improvement in the professions and combat department.

ctrl + right click changes your attack to an auto attack so you don’t have to push 1 all the time.

Yeah you can use the same moves and be reletively effective in pve against regular mobs, but to actually been good at your class you have to use all your skills.

As an elementalist i’m constantly switching attunements, as a mesmer I need to watch my CD so I can summon another phantasm, and as a ranger i’m laying down traps. Being clever I can solo most champion mobs in the game, but I couldn’t do that if I was just auto attacking.

You’re being a bit greedy, action combat in an mmo is a relatively new system and it takes time to perfect it.

I know and understand what you are saying.

i understand development takes time, but it is disappointing to see so little effort going towards improving professions and the way combat unfolds. i also understand that gaming trends have changed and some players don’t want 50 buttons to manage (neither do I), but between all the limited skills, limited customization outside of gear, long cool downs…professions and combat here are extremely uninteresting. the only redeeming value to the profession and combat experience is the ability to move while attacking and that is unfortunate for players like me.

essentially with each log in and update I find myself chasing achievement numbers, mats and currency, new mats and currency, more new mats and currency, buy this now, mark calendar for item creation date, manage inventory… all while my solo or zerg combat adventures revolve around port here and there to kill stuff with #1,1,1,1,1,1 dodge roll, 1,1,1,1,1,1,1,1, heal, 1,1,1,1,1, swap, 1,1,1,1,1,1,1…… the least that could be done, if you want us to log in everyday to chase bits, pieces and parts with limitations and time gates, is to make more of an effort toward designing professions, and in turn combat, to be more interesting. i’m not taking about the uninteresting update to wvw character progression either. i’m talking about more weapon sets and attack options, more skills on the bar, more individual ability options and choices, more professions, worthwhile progression beyond 80 and a lot less of what is being currently offered. hopefully something is done to make a more robust profession and combat system because there is potential and you’ll definitely need to prepare for when the credit card users run out of funds to purchase all the little gem store goodies.

finally, for long run player retention, it would be a good idea to look up those old coh build planners and start developing accordingly. following their character and combat directions will hit all the right hot buttons and i’m sure provide more options for credit card usage.

I’m rather curious about this because I want to get into it, but playing with friends and people I know is something I try to do because I just have so much more fun. The only PvP i can get my friends and any guildies of a guild that has 200 people is WvW roaming. They give me some of the worst excuses I can find to not do spvp. I always give them solutions but they just make up another excuse. Maybe I’m unlucky, but the other guilds and people I interact with seldom do sPvP. I’ve only met 1 person who is a avid s/tpvper in this game and he goes offline for long periods of time.

So tell me forum, why do you guys not play sPvP? I really wish more people would play it, it is saddening that I am in contact with 200+ people and I hardly see any of them want to do spvp.

because professions were cheaply designed thus making combat boring as all get out. combat fun factor on a scale of ten is about 4 currently. the only redeeming value to pressing #1 a lot, dodge rolling, healing and managing limited everything and cool downs is that we are allowed to move while we press these few buttons.

summary of the above in three words…
cheap, limited and boring.

Was just watching the state of the game and Jon Sharp says, ranger pets dps will be coming down and that pets do to much damage right now.

this obviously means the devs are converting the over abundance of ranger dot to direct damage on all weapons and are planning to throw in some really super awesome burst capabilities too! this is an incredibly brilliant change that also saves a ton of bandwidth stress in the process! kudos!

I personally feel the entire economy and reward systems are not good but that’s just me.

I like to spend money but not on junk (most of what is offered on the gem store) or because of dr, low reward rates, rng and the variable gem to gold rates for said junk or necessity stuff. overall this f2p economy design strongly encourages you to spend a lot of $ but for very little in return. basically anet created an online version of expensive dates with little “forward progression” (censored for young eyes).

Been playing a bit, got kinda bored with every class and reciently made a ranger wow they are a pretty fun class. I am not sure why a lot of peeps dislike em, the ranger imo is way more fun then any other class I have played. My main classes I play a lot were the necro and guard, compaired to the ranger those two classes are kinda blah. Anyhoo that’s my 2 cents :-),

step 1- get to 80.
step 2- gear up and play in all environments.
step 3- come back and tell us how much fun you are still having.

Rainbow Jellyfish

It has come to my attention that this uses a different model than the blue Jellyfish that happens to look Kitten EXACTLY the same. I am planning on fixing this within the next month but needed to get some feedback from rangers about their feelings about their HoM rainbow jellyfish pets changing how they look. I can assume that they will be happy, but you know what happens when you assume.

Post your thoughts on this internet forum thread and I will read them.

  • Warrior knockdown, frenzy, hundred blades combo
    • stunbreaker and you’re out
    • simply evade/block the knockdown
    • use the pet to CC the warrior (unless he popped balanced stance)
  • Kill Shot
    • Evade/Block
    • Interrupt
  • Longbow bleeds
    • For 15 seconds of every 30 seconds, remove those conditions.
    • Use pet as shield against projectiles
    • Use plethora of regens, condition removals, etc.
    • Dodge the shot.

I doubt your testing of the longbows took into account the pet’s damage nor the additional capabilities of the two classes … but I could be wrong. Please feel free to submit your data (note: please don’t just print numbers. video evidence is best).

When it comes to implementing pet stow buffs versus pet AI, you’re disregarding the fact that since having the pet is still an option, the improved AI is still necessary. Your stow is not a replacement for improving pet AI, it’s additional, needless work.

The Ranger having a pet is not making them a pokemon master. They pick their pets before combat just like others pick their weapons. The pets become a part of the build. No one accuses the Minion Necro or Elementalist with their 1-2 elemental glyphs of being Pokemon masters and they have less control over those.

Now, when it comes to you comparing sPvP and WvW … controlling areas is just as important in WvW. If you have a location with siege, you want to control it so your siege doesn’t get destroyed. If you encounter an enemy at a choke point, you want to control the fight so they are in the choke point instead of you or so that they can’t then outmaneuver you.

You are making some sweeping generalization and assumptions (some of which are incorrect, as noted above) and ignoring the fact that you are doing so.

you seem to be an exceptional and knowledgeable player sebrent. i would love to see you lead the ranger community by example and create a series of educational ranger videos in wvw, spvp tournaments and dungeons. please help guide the misguided!

edit- unedited gameplay videos would be best so we can see how all things unfold. also, perhaps you could set up a stream of your live gameplay sessions for all of us study and learn from.

If you don’t enjoy the game, you don’t have to play it. Not every game will be enjoyed by every person.

somehow i think anet would rather have players like me who spent cash and bring up topics on the forums to discuss than players like you who don’t help fund future development and tell others to quit playing the game if they don’t like or question certain aspects.

How do you figure?

I made the boxed purchase of the game, play frequently, and actively participate in the community. The fact that I made a wise investment in Diamonds early in the game’s life cycle that allowed me to purchase additional character slots and bank tabs in no way reduces the volume of my voice in these discussions. Similarly, the fact that you decided to willingly and without coercion spend money on Diamond purchases does not raise the volume of your own voice.

I am positive that ArenaNet considers ALL of their players when making decisions, with little to no consideration given as to cash shop purchases or lack thereof. They are a fantastic company that has proven time and again that the most important consideration for them is the integrity of their game.

you never mentioned gem purchases in your original statement. you would have been better off saying that you liked the way things are and moved on instead of trying to diminish a concern or thought by using the default “don’t like so don’t play” comment.

ahh yes integrity, just like that cool manifesto.

Quite a few people have been telling me to avoid a ranger, due to the class being least wanted in dungeons, poor in PvP and overall crappy and buggy.

Is there any truth to this, or is it just the internet sounding chamber effect?

roll and invest in another profession like thief, elementalist or mesmer. wait a year and check on the state of the ranger profession then consider rolling one at that time.

Thieves as well? I hope this is only for pve and not pvp because thieves are the last thing that needs a buff.

Most thieves don’t make it out of the lower tiers because you can mitigate them very easily. As a ranger I shut thieves down all the time who don’t use venoms, especially if you have something like healing spring and Lightning reflexes. One fixes stun, one fixes immob/cripple, and then it’s just dodge rolls at the right moment and CC to shut them down. Also bring wolf for f2 and stay nearby when thieves start doing their stealthy bit, and then be ready to watch them flee in terror.
That of course means their build options are highly limited, and when that happens people can hard counter you more easily.

The changes for rangers coming in this next patch are a step in the right direction for them. I am not part of that team so I won’t be announcing any of the changes unless told otherwise.

rangers must be getting a major melee damage and burst upgrade that is equivalent to those potent skimisher thieves! that would make rangers extremely balanced and provide more build options while still keeping us easily mitigated!

lets discuss who is actually enjoying the game at level 80. also, do you consider this game a grind? in my opinion, people are leaving this game because its incredible boring and grindfest at level 80. what do you guys think?

yes boring grindfest with wasted potential and strong annoyances that won’t change anytime soon. there are good elements though, but there are equally met by the bad and frustrating ones.

  1. Leavers being allowed at all in tournaments, the “hardcore pvp” option.
  2. No rating system at all besides leaderboards (useless), and glory (can get through casual pvp).
  3. downing 3 people, then having them all rally off of a single kill, the biggest failing of this pvp system.

Sorry, but GW2’s dreams as an e-sport are long gone. Maybe we’ll have better luck with TES:O

2. combat designed around these professions not good.
3. rewards not good.

esport stuff was for pr buzz. yes long gone so go buy some legendaries (don’t forget your riding gear so you can look stylish on a flying broom!) then zerg dynamical events in orr and walls in wvw. eb jp can be fun after happy hour though

ok i know you will say no.i have grinded for 7 hours just to move 75 skill levels and that is with a guide im going by and was told where to kill for the loot.half the things i killed left no loot and the other half dorpped maybe 2 things i needed .crafting needs revamped .they said they took out the bad things of mmos in gw2 hhhmm

well hopefully soon our resident godly ranged dps ranger can upload some videos of him dispatching thieves for all of us to learn from.

the intentional snail pace production at the professions and balancing factory leads me to believe that a few years from now professions will see some decent changes. until then just reroll or don’t pvp in this mess.

Not sure if anyone else is seeing this but almost every single game, the losing team seems to lose half there team so they don’t take rank hit…

This is going to unbalance the leaderboard in a big way…

Anet please make it so if you leave the game you get a loss or players will abuse it over and over.

There will be people with 100% wins.

can’t fault players for dropping out of matches because of terrible profession designs, poor match making and being placed on the losing side of ongoing matches.

until there are some serious profession changes, balance improvements and more effective build variety options implemented, most players will not have a fun and meaningful pvp for the sake of pvp experience despite all the fluff and faq.

also, you made a claim about godly ranged ranger dps but you keep saying stuff like “big numbers means everything?” and “oh this video is not about damage, it’s about how cool zerging rangers are blah blah”. show the live ranged dps numbers of each class then we can rate the godly order mr you know better then most of the ranger community.

Using test target in the mists does not give accurate numbers. It only gives range of numbers with a fixed variable that does not exist in live situations. Equipment wise it does not have the total stat points for armour or trinkets.

Do you hit the same numbers in the mists on golems as you do in dungeons and in WvW? I dont think so.

So you want me to test the potential damage of all classes at ranged for you. Any other variables? Build? Equipment? Target? Area of the game?

players really can’t make informed ascended gear decisions because all of the ascended gear is not available for review. with the 100 cap on laurels it is very possible that players are going to make poor gear choices that will require roughly 30 hours and 30 day wait period to replace each piece. hopefully the cap is raised (next update) or an exchange feature will be made available soonish.

April Monthly Achievement too easy

I completed the new monthly achievement on April 2nd at 10:44 pm MST. Here’s a screenshot. I think the Monthlies should take longer to get. I wasn’t even tring to complete it, I was just playing.

i like it nice and easy considering there are more than enough other things to annoyingly grind out as is.
