Now here is the thing that has been bugging me. People who test damage on dummies and calculate the DPS output of the class and compare it against another class. This is not actually accurate and the result will not actually show you the DPS of te class in a “Live” situation

One thing you have to consider is that warriors or thieves are melee classes. This means that they will spend quite a bit of their time dodging and rolling and moving weaving their way in and out of AoE’s. This reduces the amount of actual DPS. The tests people do are mainly against unmoving targets that do not hit back. It is possible to get extremely high numbers if you stand and attack something for 30 seconds however, it is a very rare occassion where you will be able to do such thing in the actual game itself.

The Ranger is equipped with very good ranged weapons. This allows them to maintain max and still keep the damage flowing. Using a LB with extended range, the ranger is completely clear from the combat area. The damage that is done from rangers is a constant that does not stop. Both bows allow for good consistent damage at any range.

I’ve been running dungeons constantly with the Ranger and have found this class to be amazingly versatile and by simply switching utilities for the right encounter (am I going to be a turret or do I need to kite) The speed does not decrease.

Even in WvW I don’t know why people QQ about the Ranger. Even against thieves we have utilities that allow us to have the advantage (protect me and SoS means thier bursts do no damage to you) The only down side I see is people speccing as a glass cannon then moan when they die so easily.

For those who do not believe, I will do a video soon. I am relatively new to the Ranger class and Im not that great a player either, but if someone like me can do it…. anyoe can. It’s not all about damage.

what bugs me is when players have very little experience with a profession and understanding of the meta make a thread claiming to know more than experienced players who have invested a lot of time playing and analyzing profession capabilities and mechanics.

sure rangers can perform well under certain circumstances, but so can any profession, if not better. all professions need work but there are other professions who will outperform rangers when manned by players of equal skill level. also, your videos will prove nothing except that you are capable of ranging things in dungeons when you don’t have aggro and are beating up noobie quality players in wvw.

i’m just wondering how anet will balance pve and pvp when there is not a hard separation between the two coding wise? also, i’m puzzled as to how changing a couple of general profession mechanics will promote fun and balanced gameplay when there are gaping holes and extremes in performance between professions?

ascended gear frustration

hi arena guys and gals!

i’m not sure why the ascended gear system is being piece mailed and offered like this. y’all should have waited until all systems and options were ready to go. in addition to a high gated time investment, the unnecessary gold sink with ectos and having to earn silly marks or whatever guild points (that currently favor large guilds), players are not able to make informed gear decisions because all of the pieces are not available.

obviously these things had not been planned out far enough ahead of time and is currently being thrown in all willy nilly. i would like to suggest that either total costs are lowered or ectos and guild marks are removed (preferred method considering a bunch of circumstances ranging from play your way no grind game manifesto and legendaries on the tp) from the ascended gear equation. it’s the least you could do to deflect some frustration while you’re still figuring things out and scrambling to get all the ascended gear and methods to obtain them in.

postscript, asap (like in the march patch) give the options to zoom out the camera a lot more and disable other players ability/power particle effects because the up close and personal firework shows are giving some players seizures.

wall of red nameplates crits you for 100k!

facing off against a sea of red things that can kill you in seconds does not really encourage more tactical combat gameplay.

so…

considering the amount of players and things on the screen and the fast paced nature of combat, please change the color and text format of all nameplates for pets, minions and summonable creatures. doing so will help contribute to making a more meaningful red vs red experience.

lately i’ve been wondering about what professions and combat will look like when levels are increased.

do y’all think the devs will continue down the easier and safer path for profession development by adding new gear and tweaking a few stats, or do you feel that they will unleash the dogs of war and shake up the meta?

any dev clues or hints to the future of professions and combat are welcome.

my core issues with spvp

while most of y’all are niggling about such and such % change and having this and that game mode, the most important parts of why spvp is not appealing to more casuals or considered decent to many current and potential pvpers are mostly being neglected and not brought up enough.

the way professions and combat were designed are boring, limited and not interesting for the long run. there is only so much you can do with a few buttons, builds, set ups and suits of armor. until there are more profession building options, offerings and variety outside of gear, the player vs player apsect of this game will never take off. ever.

aks yourself this, when profession levels are increased, how do you think combat will unfold then?

*my answers- certain professions and builds will still outshine others. bunker/burst and capture the circle will still be the main designs. my number #1 skill will hit harder and my self heal will heal more. i will have different gear to choose from. that’s kinda it in a nutshell.

professions in this game were intentionally designed to be simple and limited, that’s the core flaw. simple and limited are currently passable in open world pve and zergfests, but will not hold players long term interest (or short term as seen in spvp) unless some serious changes and separations to performance between pve/dungeons and pvp/wvw are made. i know a lot of love and hard work has gone into this game but the current design philosophy for professions and combat is more for the developers sanity and not the players enjoyment.

there are some cool “features” with professions and combat and small thing to be improved, but the fundamental things y’all should be addressing with the devs the most is how to make the core profession mechanics and the combat designed around these professions better. if we don’t press the devs on these main issues then we will always get nominal changes and results, and spend most of our game sessions hitting #1, dodge rolling, self healing and running in zergs where nothing but player numbers matter.

But that doesn’t solve the problem. It’s a cool thought that I can bring up with folks, but wouldn’t solve the problem of pets in dungeons while possibly adversely affecting PvP. Making the numbers bigger doesn’t work either (trust me, we’ve tried)

my oversimplified and generalized 2 cents for your original post combined with the above snip…

well, to be fair, you can get by easily in pve most of the time by pressing #1, dodge rolling and using your self heal while watching your favorite tv program or studying. i sincerely hope that open world pve does not remain the standard of measure for professions and combat for the long run.

while rangers can perform well in open world pve, they seem to fall apart or perform less than some other professions in dungeons, wvwvw and spvp. the difficulty some players are facing (or not really happy about) is that professions were advertised as being able to fill any role but that’s not really true and each class suffers from performance issues in different environments. if y’all want everyone capable of doing everything then that needs to happen by giving every profession access to similar powers/abilities set ups. city of heroes did a pretty decent job of accomplishing this while still offering diversity and uniqueness so maybe start by looking how they did it there.

i understand there are tons of factors involved with designing professions, combat and such, but i think this game would benefit from having a hard separation between pve/dungeons and wvw/spvp (solo and team dungeon options with difficulty sliders wouldn’t hurt either). also, currently the game lacks a lot of diversity for individual profession building (outside of gear) and suffers from too many performance lows vs extremes between profession, powers, skills… i think y’all can (and should) “make the numbers bigger” for all the professions equally while still offering unique class “features” and “make the numbers bigger” for the end game and future content to match and challenge players.

step 1- role thief and give it a rangery name.
step 2- buy mini pets to travel with you.
step 3- kill stuff with your 20k hit 3 second combo.
step 4- if you have trouble the first time with step 3 then reset the fight with stealth and redo step 3 when ready.
step 5- profit.

seriously though…

i understand things take time to balance out but 7 months in without tackling performance lows and extremes of classes is disappointing. there are tons of issues half a year into live and players are still being confronted with silly mechanics like thief 1 button 7k heartseekers and being killing in seconds while rangers are waiting 5 seconds just for thier pet f2 ability to activate.

hire more people to work on professions and combat because that’s the only way y’all are going to keep the players who are interested in more than just legendaries and playing the tp.

i heard that only rangers will have their aqua breather nerfed and be forced to surface once per minute for air. i’m pretty sure this was done to balance out their underwater damage boost from a previous patch.

it’s a great idea bc players will now travel in packs under the number limit to avoid triggering the orange sword icon and you’ll be missing out on extra badges from smaller skirmishes that occur all over the map.

edit- i’m pretty sure that this orange sword change is anets creative way of trying combat culling issue for players.

Trapper ranger overpowered

I came across few trap rangers using shortbow, with sword and dagger in a condition build. I think they are abit overpowered with access to ccs by pets, very good condition damage with around 4/5 evades, + dodges and endurance regn if you have the right sigils.
AN said they will be nerfing dd eles which is understandable however if u lock an ele down or put a large amount of condition they will go down. however im yet 2 find a way around to beat the op trap rangers as i cant get close caz of traps, and if i do manage they have 2 many evades and dodges which means u cant even lock them on a place and even if u do they will just not take dmg. i think trap rangers r the most op class in this game and need some balance

for 100 gold i’ll teach you how to deal with these godly trappas.

the game is amazing and this is what i love about it!

i love the simplicity of combat, i only have 3-4 buttons to manage while i watch walking dead and chat.

i love not having mounts and just paying for instant transport because i hate looking at the wonderful scenery.

i love that certain professions and builds can kill you a few seconds in pvp/wvw because it teaches you what you should to level up, play and use gems/gold on.

i love that tree guy is the celebrated hero because it really fits in with the whisperer theme.

i love the lack of profession build, attacks, skills, and traits diversity outside of gear because it requires less thinking. also, i like all classes to be predictable and common.

i love that we can monitor the tp through apps and web sites without having to be logged into the game.

i love how earning a legendary is not tied to any sort of meaningful achievements or content.

i love that we run slow and move even slower when in combat because it gives me a chance to look at all the wonderful scenery.

i love how dungeon runs teach you to to be good at rezzing players, it really helps to get those dailies done more efficiently.

i love the non customizable UI and console game combat style and controls.

i love that you can be hit by cc effects over and over and over, it really adds a new dimension to the way combat unfolds.

i love that the mystic toilet is always clean when i go to use it.

i love pink.

i love all of you guys and gals.

i love a lot of other things too but i have to stop typing because my hand hurts from spamming the #1 button.

seriously though…

yes there are some decent aspects to gw2 but some players have their “fun” by digging deeper into various aspects of a game and have higher expectations. just because some of y’all are easily pleased by looking at pretty graphics, accept whetever is put in the game and swinging around your legendary in LA, doesn’t mean that everyone else should get off the forums, not provide input and just keep shelling out cash in the gem store to keep this game going for the long run.

I can counter cheesy thief spam, 100lb warrior, and dd ele easily. Mesmers I just ignore mostly because they are just an annoyance. But how do you deal with rangers now? Between double traps, there complete unintended immunity to conditions and rapid fire I have been unable to find a necromancer build capable of killing them. Rapid fire and pets particularly seem to chew me up.

i am not hopeful for this game on the spvp end at all because of the way the main features (professions and combat) were designed. currently the professions set up and combat mechanics are passable for open world pve. wvw is mostly about (numbers) zerg vs zerg tactics and not professions. dungeons and fractals are a die/rez, dps spam, do this trick at this time to win and bring anything experience. the oversimplified ways professions and combat were designed become somewhat acceptable while participating in the above activities. in spvp it is a whole new ballgame because the profession and combat system vs profession and combat system highlights the fundamental flaws, limitations and shallowness of things.

imo, if the core of professions and combat remains limited to certain builds, capable professions and set ups, an extremely small number of “powers” at hand/ready (#1 spam and long cooldown combos) and lack of “power” customization (outside of gear), no amount of nifty features or rewards will attract and maintain a larger spvp crowd.

obviously improvements and additions will be made and y’all can niggle about this, that and decimal points, but ultimately things won’t change drastically enough for professions and the way combat unfolds to make a much of a difference to spvp.

My GW2 thoughts

“Hello everyone! I just want to share some thoughts on GW2. I really like the graphics and players. Southsun Cove is simply gorgeous but the number of enemies are too excessive and Champion Karka are way too powerful. Mostly everything there besides the parrots and crabs are annoying, their high power levels are unnecessary, they drop cruddy loot most of the time and those are just a few reasons why no one wants to hang around there and kill these monsters. In addition to the cruddy rewards, every time you die to these overpowered monsters there are ridiculous porting and repair fees!

I also noticed that as this game gains a new player it easily loses 10 if not more. GW2 needs to rework their professions, powers, weapons, combat, loot drops… basically everything. Why the heck do we have powers with 240 sec recharge? lol! We only have 10 powers in the bar and you basically have to smash the #1 key until another ability is ready minutes later! GW2 must hold the mmorpg world record for the most amount of #1 key presses and dodge rolls in combat for an mmo! lol! I understand that the developers strayed from their manifesto and this game is newish but I still have some hope left that things will change for the better.

We need some trinity mechanics desperately because limiting combat to pressing #1, dodge rolls, die/rez/die/rez "teamwork"and running to tank when you have aggro while teams dps mobs down is just plain bad and silly!

thanks and sure i’d love to elaborate.

i prefer not having 40 buttons to manage in combat but i personally feel the current profession design and accessible abilities/powers during combat here are too limited. i was trying to think of ways to stay somewhat close to the original combat bar design and mechanics but have a set up that would allow for a more flexible and diverse combat experience for existing and future content.

better button details…

instead of 10 working buttons we would double that to 20. numbers 1-10 would all consist of individual weapon attacks or a be combination of 2 weapons such as sword and warhorn. players would still be able to swap to a second weapon or weapon set. a 3rd set would be great

f1 would be only the self heal, while f2 would be an aoe ground heal affecting pets and teammates

f3-f5 would strickly be the slots for 3 basic skills at hand and f6-f8 are for 3 passive running signets. or possibly f3-f8 could be something like max 2 traps, 2 signets, 2 nontrap skills.

f9 and f10 would be reserved for 2 long cooldown elite skills.

obviously there will need to be a ton of creation and work done to provide more weapons, attacks, skills, traits and signets, but i feel it would be healthy for player retention, end game combat/meta for the long run. additionally, tougher and more interesting combat can be designed to continuously provide a challenge for players and teams.

So if you’re in trouble in combat you want to be able to just port away to safety? That removes all difficulty from the game… I agree that maybe they could modify it so that you don’t get stuck as “in combat” when you’ve finished off a mob 10 seconds prior. If you make it so that there’s no restriction, you’ll be in WvW killing someone and they’ll port away before you can finish them. Or you’ll be porting all over the place trying not to die. I think that would be weird and unbalanced.

the answer to that question would be no, a antiport mechanic would be necessary while you have aggro on you. my issue is with the running in mud experience once in combat.

NO. Its not hard to get out of combat, just turn around and kill. Or run a bit further if necessary. Or die.

so why are you in favor of keeping combat movement suppression as a game mechanic? what does it add or enhance to the overall combat experience?

don’t worry about lore and think of things from an evolution standpoint.

remove all the vistas, wps, and poi from the current wvwvw zones and put them in a world work with world work with world (wwwwwww) alternate “fight the dragons and their minions” universe borderlands and battleground where servers must work together clearing and holding each borderland and make a final assault on the eternal dragons battleground when the right conditions are met!

I know lot of people have asked for WvW to be excluded from 100% map completion (including myself) but it doesn’t have to be that way.

My gripe isn’t with difficulty getting the exploration done due to which server owns what, my main issue is constantly being zerg-mobbed by enemy players. They in fact prey on people trying to get exploration done.

Those people who say, I shouldn’t explore alone, well they have a point but most of the time that’s not possible for me due various reasons but mostly due to my time zone. Frankly, even if I had another person with me, I don’t think it would make that much of a difference, as each time I’ve been killed there were at least half a dozen + or a big zerg.

Lot of people have stated that WvW is considered by Anet as PVE area, which means it equates to WvW being an open world pvp. As such and as I have seen similar features in games that have open world pvp, I suggest the following options be made available to players who purely want to explore WvW, rather than participate in killing other players.

1) Create a toggle on Character’s portrait with an option to turn on/off a flag.

Flag off = you cannot attack other players and other players cannot attack you (however this rule does not apply to NPCs. you can still attack them and they can attack you)

Flag on = players can attack you and you can attack other players.

I think this is a simple enough proposition, it shouldn’t be too difficult to do and I would really appreciate Anet implementing this option. Otherwise, I think I will give up on my favorite part of the game…exploration.

It would be nice if people who like this idea indicate their support. The more support it gets, the more likely it will get noticed and hopefully be implemented.

nice idea but a flag option won’t work with the current set up because of culling, player caps, pve mob dynamic events, pve mobs dropping badges of honor, jp loot, resource nodes, must own point to enter…

but,

in addition to solo, we could also get scaling for larger parties (say 10 or so) with scaled up rewards. also, possibly just having difficulty settings (1 easy – 10 super pro mode)may do the trick as well.

so i have noticed these little chests around de events and fractals and i find myself wondering how many i have not noticed because of their size and random locations. it is annoying to miss loot so instead of having a mini chest laying around somewhere that can go easily unnoticed, give players a reward chest notification after each de, fractal and whatever instead.
