IMHO they should remove commanders altogether. It would solve SO MANY problems with the current state of WvW.
- John Smith, ArenaNet in-house economist
Regarding the changes
In the positive
- Roaming has become way more fun
- Adding stat bonus as a reward is a good step forward
- Added incentive to WvWvW
- Use of heights as strategy was factored in during the map design
- Greatly increased the need for everyone on that particular map to work in unison
- Surprise tactics by rushing on said occupied point creates anticipatory jitters
- Some use of water combat is still in-play
- Felt like I was playing in an entirely new map. It was a good feeling for the stalemate feeling we had in the BL.
In the negative
- Roaming has become harder for duos or singles
- Stat Bonus is too much. 25 would be better than 50.
- Increased Lag reported by all players
- falling off the map into unintended areas ,i.e. map glitch
- 3 out of 5 cap points should be increased to 4 out of 5 to balance reward and sacrifice
Overall, I think the WvWvW team are heading in the right direction.
-Fuzz
Fuzz, thanks for the feedback. A couple of responses:
1) The lag is an issue we are aware of and a result of a bug we will fix as soon as possible.
2) Please report any and all places you can fall out of the map or get stuck. We will continue to address those as we can.
3) The buff is something we will continue to think about. There are alternative frameworks for the buff that I think we will at least look into.
4) For now, we will stay with 3/5 because it makes it easier to capture and harder to hold. If it turns out that this doesn’t function the way we intend it to, we will re-evaluate it accordingly.
5) Roaming in the middle is absolutely more difficult, however, travelling the edges of the map shouldn’t have become any more difficult. At least that’s how it played for me yesterday.Again, thanks for the input, and for playing.
Are you kidding me? Why do you write only in Posts with good feedback? Do you read the other 100 Threads how bad the new WvW stuff is?? 80 % of your WvW Players don’t like that stat boost. Why stat boost? Such an silly idea. I mean, why not loot boost or boost which reduced damage of siege? Or stat boost for Servers as inferiority buff. I can’t understand you. Don’t get me wrong, I liked the work you (Arena Net) did, but in the last three patches you go into the wrong way! Why do you do nothing about the 727493920 Threads oh whinning and the bad review ypu get. Or the good ideas there are?? I don’t understand it. So many good ideas, and then choose stat boost? Lol.
It’s a shame what happened to this great game in the last time. Why can’t you make a new Map without new dumb ideas like stat boost? Hope you get my point, and the point of the other 2748493 threads about this patch. Remove this buff and do something against the lags. Then, all will be happy.
Thanks.
+1 to this. It is quite annoying that the one developer assigned to serve the WvW community cherry picks out posts instead of addressing the real issues.
ArenaNet obviously does not understand what they have created in WvW and therefore they continue to make changes that make little sense to the community.
I really hope they bring back the quaggans and remove this new BL bullkitten.

What do people think, yes or no?
I see this a compromise for the large number of people who dont want ascended gear in the game. Make it pve only.
Anet will lose people with their current implimentation while trying to please the grinders…so why not do both. I doubt any of the pve grinders play wvw anyway.

No: 36 (44%)

Not all magic-find related stuff is getting removed. One or two items are staying in the game (speculation is the infusions/amulets) and foods are definitely staying.
Do you have a source for this?
- John Smith, ArenaNet in-house economist
Please refund the laurels, the gold, and the guild commendations i’ve spent on Magic Find gear.
I don’t see that happening. Unfortunately, we will porbably end up with a loss on this one. No way for them to know how much it cost me to acquire those runes for my MF gear. And it isn’t vendor value, I assure you.
It seems one part of the player base that complained enough about MF has gotten their way.
I don’t see it happening either, but that shouldn’t stop us from asking.
I agree that it would be difficult to refund MF gear that costs gold since the value of those items changes, but the gear I am talking about costs laurels and guild commendations.
50 laurels = 40 days of playtime.
24 Guild commendations = 4 weeks of running guild missions.
Don’t get me wrong I think this change is a great idea in the sense that they are taking away the choice of MF gear over gear with meaningful combat stats, but if they are going to do this they need to make it right by all the folks that already invested in MF gear.
- John Smith, ArenaNet in-house economist
I think the MF change is a good idea but I want my 50 laurels refunded for the amulet and I want my 24 guild commendations refunded for the two accessories. Each of those represent a month of work.

The Devs are maybe busy working on WvW instead of sitting on the forums?
If that’s true (and I hope it is) then I think ArenaNet should hire an additional community relations person to reply to people on the forums just so players feel like they have a better connection to the game. John Smith does a great job in the BLTC sub-forum responding to folks so it’s not like there is some sort of company policy against increased interaction with the community.

When will we see new content added to WvW?
- Yes, we know that new WvW maps take a lot of time to create.
- Yes, we know that creating new WvW content doesn’t make you any more money via the gemstore.
- and No, Catapult Mastery does not satisfy our appetite when you consider all the other content you guys are pumping out every two weeks.
I’m sure you already know this, but players are going to start leaving for other games soon.

6500+ lonely badges sitting in the bank waiting for a pure wvw ascended gearing option. Sadly, I doubt it will ever happen.
- John Smith, ArenaNet in-house economist
Jackie.1829 makes some great points and I think any experienced WvW’er would agree that there are some serious design flaws with WvW. A few months after launch ArenaNet openly admitted that they were surprised with how popular WvW had become which leads me to think they did not put much effort into designing a good system to begin with.
With that being said I think there are some easy fixes that could make WvW better:
1) Double the number of WvW maps. It baffles me that ArenaNet is putting more resources into their Living Story content but not their WvW content. In my opinion the only meaningful endgame that exists is WvW. If they want the game to survive they need to make it a priority.
2) Remove commander tags. I suspect most people will disagree with me here but I would argue that the commander tag mechanic is what allows most of these zergs to operate. I think large open field battles should include a high degree of chaos that requires advanced tactics and coordination to counter. The fact that any noob can follow around a blue icon and spam their 1 key is ridiculous.
Lastly, Someone above mentioned the idea of ‘adapting’. This is just a computer game and adapting for most players will mean finding a new game to play, not changing their playstyle to accommodate the flaws of a bad game. If ArenaNet doesn’t get their kitten together I suspect this game will be dead in a year.

The fact that the commander tag stirs up this much controversy is proof enough that it should be removed from the game.

Laurels are so anti- multiple toons as is the whole current wvw Wexp set up, it’s like ANet saying ’ PLAY ONLY ONE TOON OR ELSE’
This is exactly what it’s about. +5.
Ascended items are Account Bound, Soulbound on Use. Unless the WvW ones are different. I haven’t gotten home yet to check.
I believe the point Victory was making is that because you can only earn 40 laurels per month it takes a very long time to gear up multiple characters with ascended gear if you are using laurels.

- John Smith, ArenaNet in-house economist
Regarding Laurels, I think the biggest problem with them is that they are a bit unfair to players who manage multiple characters (alts). Otherwise, I think that most of the rage surrounding them is coming from players who didn’t or don’t or don’t want to utilize other methods of gaining Ascended Gear. (Fractals or Guild Commendations, specifically.)
+1 Well said. For me, three level 80’s and seven sets of gear means I would need 490 laurels to get fully decked out in ascended gear. And that doesn’t include accessories since I get those through guild missions already.
- John Smith, ArenaNet in-house economist
I think ascended gear through WvW should cost badges, not laurels. If Anet was worried about the economy then make the badge cost like 1500 each or something like that.
The whole idea was to add an alternate path for obtaining ascended gear. By including laurels in the cost they essentially changed nothing.
The fastest way to obtain ascended gear will still be through laurels for the amulet, guild missions for accessories, and FoTM for the rings. The badge cost is too low to factor into the cost when you consider that you can earn 30 badges a day just running the jumping puzzles.
Anet, you really dropped the ball on this one.
- John Smith, ArenaNet in-house economist
We included the laurel cost to prevent the economy from suddenly being blown out and to not invalidate the ways PvE players can get ascended items already. This system means that it is faster to get them in WvW, especially for players who already have badges, without being so much faster that everyone only gets them in this manner. As for the difficulty of acquiring laurels in WvW, we have taken steps to address that, including the fact that there will always be 3 daily achievements that are WvW specific. Speaking personally, I’ve been able to achieve my dailies in WvW even without that change, but this should make it even easier.
I have three level 80’s and 7 sets of gear. It will take me over 12 months to get the 490 laurels I need. Is that how you intended the system to work? Should I go play another MMO while I grind out my dailies?
Actually, yes. Ascended was made to fill a time-sink between that required to get exotics (non-existent) and legendary (forever, give or take an hour). For the minor stat increase involved it’s not like there’s any notable disadvantage as you would see in carrot-styled MMOs where gear matters significantly between tiers. It’s a modest increase for a modest time investment that ultimately isn’t necessary.
(1) Legendary weapons have nothing to do with this issue. I don’t have one and will never get one.
(2) A “time investment” of 12 months is not modest.
(1) Legendary weapons have everything to do with the issue where time sinks were concerned. There was a humongous time gap between exotics and legendaries that, quite frankly, needed to be filled. People were getting full exotics and not seeing a progression flavored goal that felt somewhat reachable.
(2). Per character. Took a few months to get my mesmer in ascended. It was fine… the marginal increase never held be back from being effective in WvW.
That’s great man, but we’re not talking about effectiveness in WvW and we’re not talking about the time sink involved in getting a legendary. I’m sure you have valid points to make on those subjects but that has nothing to do with the point I was making.
As I mentioned in my original post I have three level 80’s and 7, almost 8 sets of full exotic gear. If I want to upgrade all that gear to ascended I will need 490 laurels, 380 counting what I have now. That would mean earning all the dailies and the monthlies for the next 12 months. That makes no sense and I think most people would agree with me. The easier option, and the option I think most people will end up taking is just to suck it up and run fractals.
The only thing running Fractals will do for you is give you another option to get the rings, period. You won’t get any additional access to amulets or accessories that way.
As for effectiveness… if you’re in full exotics, you’re effective. Period. The nominal increases from ascended have little effect in WvW where a single dodge, block, avoid, move out of range, etc. completely negates any apparent numerical advantage people on paper. Full berserker to berserker upgrading, five pieces (not back piece) netted, when including crit chance and damage, a grand total of some 5 to 7% increase in total raw damage. So if I hit for 1000, that became a whopping 1050. That’s it. One dodge, one well timed heal, it’s meaningless. If you’re better you’ll still be better regardless of whether or not that guy you just got the loot bag from had ascended items.

First off let me just say that the entire WvW community has a great appreciation and respect for the increased effort for communication that Anet has given us. Some of us hang on your every word and we appreciate it when you take the time to share things with us. With that being said I want to try to explain why this change has bothered so many of us.
Over the past few months many of us have held an expectation that the addition of WvW ascended items would constitute an alternate path for obtaining these items. This expectation grew out of comments that were made by ArenaNet on the forums and from interviews given with other media outlets. What we got today fell short of that.
Many of us have alts. We create them and play them because we enjoy the game so much that we want to try it from the perspective of another profession. Before today’s patch it was commonly accepted that the current laurel system did not encourage alts because regardless of how many characters you have you are limited to 1 laurel per day thus limiting how much ascended gear you could obtain.
The exception to this scenario was of course fractals. Fractals can be run as many times as you want and you can share the ascended gear you obtain with your alts. When talk of WvW ascended gear first arose it was thought to be a counterbalance to running fractals, i.e. people who did not enjoy running fractals could get their ascended gear through WvW.
The problem now is that after today’s patch running Fractals still seems to be the quickest method to obtain ascended rings. Using guild commendations still seems to be the quickest method to obtain ascended accessories. And to obtain an ascended amulet we are now priced at 20 laurels instead of 30. 250 badges being an almost insignificant amount to obtain. Essentially what you have done is not provide an alternate gear path, but a discount on an existing one.
So that’s where it stands.
Cheers.

Ascended WvW gear while only earning 40 laurels per month?!?!
So with 3 level 80’s and 7 different sets of gear I am looking at 490 laurels needed, which does not include Accessories since I get those from Guild Missions.
At 40 laurels per month that comes out to over 12 months of playtime.
Anet… did you seriously not do the math on this? Are you discouraging players from making alts or using different sets of gear?
Obviously you shouldn’t give out ascended gear for free but making it a grind to obtain through the daily achievement is just bad game design.

From a March 25th interview:
GW2Hub: You mentioned badges and improvements to their use, can you tell me a little more about that? Can we come to see new, exclusive skins?
Mike Ferguson: There aren’t any new and exclusive skins, but there are skins that are new to WvW that were previously unobtainable there. What we’re doing is setting up a merchant that you can purchase your stat combinations from and an appearance option and kind of combine those. That’s how you get your piece of gear.
GW2Hub: Does this extend to Ascended items?
Mike Ferguson: We don’t have it in for this particular build, but it is definitely on our list of things we want to add to it, it’s just that we encounter some issues getting it into this particular build.
Will ascended gear be obtainable through WvW before the end of 2013?

I think everything mentioned so far is exactly right.
Working together as a team should be encouraged and more rewarding.
AND
Capturing a more difficult objective should reward more wxp then capturing an easy one.
How can we do this?
- John Smith, ArenaNet in-house economist
Why use badges or gold? Now that we have WXP, why not just make it once a player gets rank 100 they get a badge that can be viewed on the map. Different badge and color depending on your rank. Players could squad join or ignore it completely if they wanted through a toggle in options.
That’s a good idea.
If it were up to me I would do the following:
(1) Display WvW rank as an in-game icon to fellow server members. ArenaNet already has the framework to do this: http://i.imgur.com/SEfVm.jpg.
(2) Make the blue icon that appears on the map an upgrade purchasable with wxp ability points.
(3) Remove the current commander tag system and refund everyone’s 100g.

WvW is GW2s PvP.
More people play it than sPvP/tPvP…..anet give it up please and listen to the majority of your players.
Its time to put the arenas on the back burner and focus all pvp dev time solely on WvW. Keep the PvE dev time since Pve numbers trump all.
I want better char progression in WvW….while I appreciate the last update let us be honest. Its a lil kitten.
Thank you for you’re time.
ps. I know some sPvP people will come here with some hate….if I wanted to play conquest id play battlefield. I get way more maps, can use all classes, and fly kittening helos.
Agreed. If Anet doesn’t put more time and energy into WvW many people will tire of it and move on to another game. For many players the only end-game in GW2 is WvW.

We are working on adding more info to these leaderboards right now and the first area we are intending to get to is displaying WvW rank data. I would like to see us get some guild specific info as well, but the first step is the individual info. The suggestions here are also areas we’ll likely look into, if they are feasible.
Would it be possible to display rank in-game along with the player name to people on the same server? That way we can have a real hierarchy system in WvW and get rid of the artificial system that is based off the commander tag.
- John Smith, ArenaNet in-house economist
can you do something about it resetting your maximum supply to 10 when you pick it up while holding 15?
We can look into it. I was unaware it did that. Any chance you can give me a more detailed explanation so I can have QA track that down?
I can confirm that this is still a bug as of a few days ago.
What happens is that if you have 15 supply and you kill an enemy supply caravan your supply goes to 10.
- John Smith, ArenaNet in-house economist
While I think there is a good argument for this, we haven’t discussed it enough yet for me to say if we would or would not want to go this route. We are looking at the commander system generally, because we think it can be improved upon, and as part of that discussion we’ll almost certainly look into how you become a commander.
Why not make everyone a commander? (since 100g will eventually become chump change)

Respect is earned not purchased. ArenaNet, fix the commander system or remove it from the game.
- John Smith, ArenaNet in-house economist
I wouldn’t be surprised if they added ascended gear for badges but made the cost high enough such that it wasn’t easily obtained. If you use the karma cost ratio of rare gear compared to exotic gear you get something like 1/2.65. Currently a full set of exotic gear can be purchased with 1,889 badges, if we use the same ratio as karma cost we’re at 4,993 badges for a full set of ascended, or something like an average of 832 badges per item.
Obviously this is not an accurate comparison b/c the exotic karma gear is all priced equally whereas the rare gear depends on the item slot. Nonetheless, something between 800 and 900 badges for an ascended item makes sense when you consider how long it would take to obtain those badges and compare that to how long it would take to obtain the same item from multiple fractal run.

- Minimal number of people must join a commander’s squad before he can flag his pin (20-30 people). People will join a good commander, they won’t join a bad commander. This will reduce bad commanders pins on the map.
This will also allow guilds with multiple groups to use the squad system who DON’T want to actually lead with a pin on.
That’s a good idea. The fact that many commanders don’t bother to create squads now speaks volumes to the failure of the current system.

I like that idea, and you could possibly tie feats like towers/keeps captured to the tag and/or starring system you mentioned…I know many would probably complain that being a zerg capping things doesn’t earn you the traits needed to command…but it does more so than paying 100g.
I think that’s exactly right. Almost anything based off of merit would be better than a system based off of a gold purchase.
I have hope that the ranking system that Anet promised us will deliver on some of this. I just hope that it includes the removal of the current commander system.

I agree with you that the current commander system stinks because it’s based off of a gold purchase. However, I think Anet should scrap the entire system and replace it with the ranking system that they’ve already announced for the March update.

… This is why if in WvW I see some commander spamming orders, I usually just say “meh” and go back to doing whatever I was doing. You want that to stop, then start making it mean something.
Exactly, and this is something that is evident on almost all servers & tiers. So many commanders have stopped trying to form squads and instead use team chat to spam their orders.
The current commander system feels like it was hastily put together as a last minute gold sink.

ANet don’t care…
I hope that’s not true. The upcoming March WvW update will send a lot of people packing if it doesn’t address some of the flaws with WvW.

Because the problem is zerging wins!!!!! The problem with you’re post is you are complaining about the symptoms of the actual problem.
One focuses on the system the other focuses on the people of the system, both of which interact.
That is entirely subjective…..
I never made one personal attack. My statements were based around the fact that you’re argument is fundamentally flawed.
Feel free to reply.
I didn’t say you made a personal attack, I said you were attacking the poster instead of debating the issue, there is a difference. You told me I was wrong without saying why. You’re telling me my argument is flawed but you’re not saying why. A respectful and pleasant debate on the issues does not require calling out individuals with generalized retorts.
You’re saying that the “problem” with my post is that I am complaining about the symptoms rather than the problem. Yes, I think there is a problem with the commander system and that the symptoms of that problem are affecting players. However, your unilateral vision of the game that says that zergs are the root of all problems is something I do not agree with, and in my opinion that viewpoint is entirely subjective. But this is not a thread about the “zerg problem” so I will agree to disagree.
And in case you hadn’t noticed, we actually do agree on 98% of the issues here. By all means make a thread that outlines why WvW is flawed because of zerging! I will reply and give you a +1.

No you’re wrong, in fact only a few are given respect.
Actually, you’re wrong, but whatever. I’m not here to attack other people, only debate the issue. If you feel like making a case for how respect is attributed to commanders then please feel free.
It’s not. A commander is annoying you? Use the block feature, see how easy that is.
Blocking a commander would not change the tone and atmosphere created within a zone. I mentioned that point in the original post.
If you wanted to be taken seriously you should have complained only about the commander system, rather than complaing about commander’s in general.
Criticizing the “commander system” and criticizing “commanders in general” are kind of the same thing. The example I gave was a pattern of behavior exhibited by many commanders which I think illuminates one of the many flaws of the commander system.
If you want to be taken seriously then stick to debating the issue rather than attacking the poster.
The issue is that it’s purchased through gold. Meaning that a good WvW player, who could be a great commander, may never have enough gold to buy one.
I completely agree.
