Get over yourself. Any tactful person, regardless of profession, will strike first if given the chance. Thieves just do it better. It’s in the nature of archetype.
Lol. Then don’t complain when you pay the price for being a prick. If it’s the “archetype”, then the consequences of being that archetype are ridicule and scorn.
Get over it!
My only complaint that I have is you are shoehorning every thief player into this false absolution of yours. I dont like being called a prick. Especially when all I’m trying to do is be useful to my server in wvw, with whatever limited methods and tools are available to me.
When a thief hides behind an obstacle and tries to insagib you out of stealth, they will obviously be laughed at when they fail. They deserve it.
I remember I was overlooking the supply camp next to the jumping puzzle and I get hit by this thief out of nowhere. I threw him off the cliff to his (oh so satisfying) death.
Other classes deserve respect when you beat them. They deserve a “/bow” for a good fight. No one has ever bowed to a thief that tried to gank them in a sneaky manner.
Go figure.

“Fighting dirty” and cheesy one trick pony builds is hardly thief exclusive.
When has a thief ever blown or pushed you off a cliff? Never, said everybody.
(Plus they all dress in the same manner with their whole Assassin’s Creed wet fantasy)
Some of us have a Thief: The Dark Project wet fantasy too tyvm.
As for the thief hate… I get it a lot myself, even without acting like a jerk.
When the laughs and dances come out, the gloves come off and I be trollin’.
It’s best used in response to something, and to, well, flank. Treat it like it’s heatseeker and you’ll be dissapointed.
Just look at how the attack is performed itself. Your character spins counter-clockwise stabbing with the left hand, intended for the BACK. How is that supposed to work if you’re not close to the target? Afterwards, as someone already said, you can continue your movement for the second stab.
Just fooling around, testing flanking strike
Testing? Keep practicing, maybe you’ll figure out how it works eventually.
I use shadow trap in wvw from time to time. Not so much anymore because there have been a few times where I waste it due to the longer revealed debuff.
Good video, I have to wonder though….
Exactly HOW much damage you did to the Ele at the end.
So, I see the devs themselves aren’t fans of Sword/Dagger.
I don’t exactly have any real proof but people run through my shadow trap all the time even right after I clearly placed it in front of them.
I’ll have to disagree about one point the OP made. Longbow burst skill is wonderful.
I’m quite convinced that Smoke Bomb was intended to just do the silly downed state stealth attack.
Pretty much everyone seemed content with the original “revealed on destealth” proposal, I just cannot wrap my mind around this. It gave a sense of “counterplay” in that if you could hold off the thief via CC or your own mobility, you would have 3 seconds of burst-free, full visibility combat.
Instead, it’s business as usual, with a pathetic one second debuff addition. I am extremely displeased with the changes, not because I feel it is game breaking (it’s not, and it won’t affect me much at all) but because we were clued into something that was almost a universal plus, and just got a bunch of random bogus changes…
Can we get any Dev feedback as to what happened here? Are these changes still in the works, or were they scrapped, or…W T F??
As we played with the stealth changed mentioned in the SotG, we recognized that in conjunction with the change to culling this was an unpredictable change to make. We also felt that it was too big of a hit to these stealth professions, so we ended up pulling that change in favor of just increasing revealed duration by 1 second.
Nice vid, and great use of Flanking Strike. Bad thieves still gonna hate on it though.
These forums suck with links, just copy and paste it.
Thanks, who would of thought, a simple fix for a simple problem.
For the build itself. As I said my warrior is similar, used the bolas for a long time and the kitten things never hit. Scorpion Wire on my thief is more reliable, and that’s saying something.
Sounds a lot like how my warrior functions. Build is bad link by the way.
When will the Anti-Flanking Strike nonsense stop? Learn to utilize it properly people, it’s not Swordseeker 3333333……
Seriously, it’s getting old, pick on something that actually is worthless, like Body Shot.
When I was in spvp the other day I Infilitrator Striked one during RTL and stopped it dead in it’s tracks, didn’t get knocked around as I did it either. Does this always work? Haven’t done it since.
RTL doesn’t knock back. It’s Updraft that Elementalists typically use immediately after RTL that knocks you back. He was either thrown off by having his RTL stop short, or his Updraft was on CD.
Thanks, well now I know lol. I’ll try that from now on instead of wasting a dodge on the predictable opener.
Glad someone brought this topic up.

Sword/pistol is still amazing for pve content when there are critters to cleave and you need that extra stunbreak/cleanse on Infiltrators Strike. For single enemy, dagger/pistol without a doubt. Bring the right tools for the right job….
I had an idea like this a long time ago.
It was basically an F2 skill equivalent to a 3rd weapon swap on its own cooldown. The burst damage bonus from the Discipline tree would be replaced with a recast time reduction.
Well, now you know I wasnt trying to be a jerk, lol. No hard feelings.
I could just be reading it wrong, but it seems someone thinks black powder can block projectiles. It can’t. That’s a functionality unique to smoke screen.
Yes that would explain a lot.
Its no secret people dont like to fight us, as If the 60+ page long thief whinefest isn’t any indicator. I remember that everytime I get sliced in two by a stray Whirlwind Attack or blindsided by a knockdown Hunderp Blades. (no offense to you warriors out there, I love ya)
Anyways, I like the cross-profession video advice idea.
Geez, has it really come down to this? Such great lengths have to be made to defend ourselves?
Don’t get me wrong. I commend you for your efforts.
I didn’t mean to offend. My advice may of been brief, but like it or not that’s the closest you’re gonna get for what you want.
“Ranged attack blocking field it’s supposed to be” eh? I can play the sarcasm game too. No really. I’m serious!
Good luck with achieving your spammable invincible smoke bubble that blocks everything.
lern2smokescreen or projectile finisher
There is a thief guild on tarnished coast, I run it. Not 100% RP like Veil though.
I primarily play S/D. I randomly threw on D/P the other day in WvW, and I gotta say its amazing. Ensoriki’s advice is good. For myself I camp around my Shadow Trap and its been working out pretty well for me.
gogo Back Fighting now? /shrug
Seems the current consensus is Shadow Arts being the must-have. Thanks for the input so far everyone.
Yeah, it basically boils down to :
An awesome gap closing burst attack every 45 seconds + perma weakness with shortbow. Not to mention a nice chunk of power.
Or
5% less damage taken + slightly better heal from stats. 1 sec longer stealth.
Deception skill cooldown reduction. (very nice)
2 init on stealth
blind on stealth
Condi removal on stealth
Lofat’s suggestion couldnt of been said any better, but darn it all if it doesnt make it any easier to pick. :p

This is a build I’ve been working on to suit myself. Going for dps with survival bits. It also provides some initiative regen and several damage bonuses. My utilities/elites change up all the time depending on what my current environment is and I do well when it comes to choosing them. Be it world PvE, dungeons or WvW.
Please rate and comment, I ain’t no wussy when it comes to criticism.
Now here is the dilemma part. I love Mug and Lotus Poison (for shortbow 4) very much. These two things have had a greater addictive hold on me much more so than Signet of Shadow’s ever did.
Would I be able to sleep at night with the 15 points in Shadow Arts instead of Deadly Arts? (or maybe even 10 points in DA with mug and 5 points in SA)
Tis a shame. With the damage reduction change on this skill, the cripple is all its got going for it.
I’m sorry if this has been brought up elsewhere, I looked and didn’t find anything.
I have reason to believe that the thief off-hand dagger skill “Dancing Dagger” might be bugged, specifically the cripple effect. My in-game tooltip tells me that its duration should be 5 & 3/4 sec, but in reality it only nets me a 3 second duration.
At the moment I have 15% condition duration from 15 points in Deadly Arts traits and I also tried it with a Superior Sigil of Hobbling. Still only a 3 second duration from one usage.
Thank you for your time.
I’m hoping this isn’t intentional, the amulets follow the same trend. I’m sad without Ascended Valkyrie stat rings.
I prevented a stomp with it before, I think…
Out of all the things listed, I like the sound of having a whip for a weapon. There are already have a few whips in the game anyway.
However I’d really really really like a rapier sword skin and a main gauche dagger skin. I’d jump through whatever hoops that are presented to me to get it. (FFXI conditioned me for these things)
I just moved to tarnished coast from sorrows furnace because my woman has characters on my account and wants to do the rp thing. I have no activity on this forum whatsoever but I lurk a lot. Point being I strive to help any thieves in game with advice when asked and I’m always up for discussion and learning new things. Count me in if you like.
