Um, it lasts 6 seconds and takes 80 to CD.
Good to know, thank you =)
I feel like you provoked this response, Jana. :P
No, I didn’t – I have my own ranger, just too lazy to play him =)
Guess I confused the duration with necro’s Lich form, but then again, I’m also too lazy to play my necro
Thief 4 lyfe.

Try this one man, the aoe and vuln that comes from bow helps a lot when fighting downed opponents from a safe distance. D/P also provides a stackable stealth if you use Heartseeker to leap through Black Powder.
http://metabattle.com/wiki/Build:Thief_-_Dagger/Pistol
Edit: Your bow’s #3 ability allows you to evade as well, if you find yourself immobilized just spam #3 and then use Shadow Step to get out when you run out of initiative
I completely agree with this post for the most part. I don’t recommend the spamming 3 until you’re out of int though. That’s just asking for a bad place to be in, especially if the opponent has access to gap closers (which most do). Dagger/Pistol is great overall though.

I love my thief, but leveling was a pain in the kitten . Invest in a shortbow as early as possible, arguably the best thief weapon and I find myself using it a lot in sPvP, PvE, and WvW. Also, if you plan on making stealth apart of your battle plan, practice performing backstabs and, keep in mind, that landing that backstab on the sides of the opponent is just as good as behind them. 99.9% of the time opponents know whats coming after you stealth, so it is usually a scramble to land that backstab. lol

Start interrupting skills with your #4 skill (d/p). It will save you SO much int, plus I’m not sure about other thieves, but I am always trying to either get behind or on the sides of the opponent, so I can quickly use blinding powder/backstab for tons of damage and the blind so they can’t hit back. Another thing you may wanna consider too is switching out one of your weapon sets for the shortbow so when you land your infamous BS you can swap and spam #3 to get away, rather than waste your endurance.
Thank you also. Yes, I find myself not using Headshot unless I see the enemy trying to stomp. Gotta get faster at it also.
And yes, my shortbow skills stink. I find myself using a d/x set the whole match, usually. I guess I hate swapping weapons because of the 10 second wait to switch back. I figure it may be easier to learn one weapon set at a time instead of two. I run sword/dagger mainly as a backup/troll set. I love the mobility. And the Flanking/Larcenous Strike combo seems to do wonders for me when something won’t die to my backstabs :-P
Wow, so much I need to improve on! Just not sure the best methods for doing so effectively and efficiently :-P
Ps. If I could make one outrageous wish to buff the Thief profession, it would be to give it instant-weapon swap capability. A new trait to do so would be amazing! Or even give it an initiative cost if the cooldown hasn’t expired.
If the weapon swap is what is holding you back, running Rune of the Warrior is an option (reduces weapon swap cooldown), also remember that you can add sigils to your weapons that actually encourage you to swap your weapons frequently. I’ve been playing the thief profession since like two days after this game launched with only one other character haha. Plus shortbow gives you the options to engage targets at a distance. For instance, you jump into a fight between two others and effectively contribute without interfering with the friendly persons situation. Not to mention, all the utilities you have on the SB skill list.
Another tip for you as well, is that if you see a downed enemy is to dump the #4 skill (shortbow) on them so it reduces the rate at which they can be healed back, followed by you using #5 on top of them because the skill blinds them, which keeps them from interrupting your stomp If you would like some help, please feel free to add me in-game.

If it’s a ranger who clutches his LB then try daggerstorm as an opener, I usually get them with that alone.
But counter question: 6/6/2/0/0 d/p (or d/d) – don’t you have troubles with other classes as well? I can imagine that pulling that build off in wvw is rather tricky.
And you can actually stand slightly outside of SR, their (LB) aoe usually doesn’t fill up the whole area.
Edit: Their 0 damage is signet of stone which lasts 20 s or so and makes them invulnerable, so of course you can’t CnD them during that time- but that probably would be the right time to use your SR.
Thanks. I have trouble with all other professions no matter what build I take, haha! I can either kill them, but die quickly, or survive without the ability to kill, hahaha!
I love my CnD, which is why I used d/d for the longest time. Been trying to learn d/p recently. Trying to do so on a glassy build makes it a bit difficult. Also, when I try to practice in hotjoin, it ends up being 3v1… it was actually 3 rangers vs. only me the other day. And when I play unranked, I always revert to trying to win by (de)capping points instead of focusing on improving my combat skills.
I’m certainly a LOT better than I used to be. But I’m nowhere near as good as I want to be. I do wish there was a dedicated 1v1 mode, though. That seems like the best way to improve against whatever has been killing you. I actually moved from WvW to sPvP so I could be in combat more so I could improve my fighting skills. In WvW, I would either roam forever before I found another lone roamer, or I would end up zerging or being zerged :-P

-I’ve owned this game since the second day of launch and I never bothered to mess with with the “Mystic Toilet” until like 2 months ago.
-I sometimes spend an hour or more reorganizing the guild bank, only to decide I don’t like how its set-up
-I’m secretly judgmental about people who don’t say hello back to me in pvp :’(
-sometimes I wonder aimlessly in wvw with no real intention of doing anything.
-sometimes I post a controversial topic in map chat just to watch the chaos that follows.
Edit: -I also go out of my way to join the groups that specifically state requirements that I don’t meet, out of spite.

I just wanna run dual kittening pistols and actually be able to kill something in sPvP/WvW. But we can all dream, right?
-Retired Thief
I think they should make Death Blossom where instead of jumping off the ground, you spin in place like a mini dagger storm and make it where you can CANCEL it so I dont get gunned down from using one skill that I have a 50% chance of landing in the first place.
-Retired Thief
I would just enjoy an app on my phone that lets me mingle with guild options and talk to friends
-Retired Thief
I agree that the AI is pretty terrible, but if you’re traited correctly you are kitten near tanky enough to D/D them down with the occasional help from your minions LOL

Best advice I can give you is to search youtube and keep playing. You start to see whats useful and what isn’t based off your encounters.
-Retired Thief
I meant off-hand. The second weapon slot is always occupied by a short bow. I love the short bow with a thief
-Retired Thief
Does anyone have any input to what is best to pair with a sword? Can you please elaborate a bit too. I like to WvW mostly, but I do PvE. Hopefully that helps a bit.
-Retired Thief
I don’t have skype, but I would be more than happy to do this with ya! Feel free to message me in the game and we can figure it out! I been wanting to try an engineer!

Hello fellow warriors of Tyria!
Once upon a time, a friend and I had this great idea of starting a carefree guild with no real objective other than to advance the members it contained!
That is exactly what we are trying to do once again! Help us help you. Feel free to message me here or in-game. If you have any questions or are interested in joining a guild that cares about the individuals. (Currently, we are interested in a few trustworthy, experienced individuals to help us help others!)
This is a very new player oriented guild, while we recruit from all experience levels, we aim to help newer player fully experience and enjoy what Tyria has to offer!*
-Retired Thief
Oh you mean the wolf skill that people don’t use because the class elites are way better?
Yep the very same.
Probably I’m going to use 2 or 3 times as soon as I make a new char and never touch it again
Lol. I used it once and was like “Wow, this is horrible. I can get TWO hounds that do the same thing…” and changed it back to the thieves guild spell. The box and armor skins you get are pretty rad too.
-Retired Thief
Also, I can say that dodging is the best advice anyone can give you. If everyone’s saying it, it must be true, right?
Yes, you can easily test that out yourself by trying to facetank an elite/champ. You’ll never make that mistake again. :P
For PvE all classes are balanced, but Necro’s are less wanted in speed run dungeons because they are a selfish class. They’re not underpowered or anything, they just don’t have any group buffs, they just buff themselves. If you’re not interested in speed runs (like probably atleast 75% of the player base) you’re fine with Necro. Heck, I take mine into dungeons every now and then and have yet to be kicked and I’ve had her for rougly 2 years now.
As a thief, I do my best to not facetank anything. However, I agree Had this thief since the launch of this game, but, I took a break from this game for real-life reasons. kitten responsibility :/ Back for good though!

My first character I chose was a thief. They are supposedly one of the harder ones to master along with an engineer. This is probably subject to opinions, but it’s all about what you like to do in games Every profession is useful in their own way in this game and there isn’t necessarily a “better” one either. Just choose what interests you and take the time to learn the mechanics of it. That’s what makes you good or not in this game
Feel free to add me in-game, if you have any further questions.
(Disclaimer: I have a three year old. I’m not always online LOL)

Just to add my two cents, I want a rifle for my thief. I dont give an actual kitten about lore or what build this class requires. I just want my thief to dual wield daggers (which I got) and use a kitten rifle (which I haven’t gotten yet). That is all. My reason is? I paid for this game and I want it, do we really need any other reason?
-Retired Thief
While probably not as useful as these other entries, I use mine on salvage kits.
-Retired Thief
And the gold to gems ratio spiked again…
Funny, a few years ago we could’ve buy it at full price for a lot less gold but well, I finally unlocked the wolf-whatever skill
Oh you mean the wolf skill that people don’t use because the class elites are way better?

Thanks! Now I get to decide what to pick all over again! lol
-Retired Thief
This is probably a vague question, but oh well…
It’s been about 6-7 months (maybe longer) since I played this game last time, at this point, do you think I should just start over or possibly continue using the character I had previously? (80 Thief)?
-Retired Thief
I am starting up again as well! I don’t really know what server im playing on, but i was debating starting completely over again anyways! so if you are still interested, I’d be happy to join you!
