As people said above, it’s Shield + pistol over hammer. So you are looking at a condition or hybrid build (celestial). Hammer is a power build so it gives you more vuln and some defense. Shield is purely defensive when traited. I would say that in the current PvP meta, shield 4 is good for reflecting rangers, dragon hunters, pistol thieves (etc) since they will be fighting you out of hammer range. The protection + reflect is good plus the knockback if they are on point.

Shield five is good for AoE daze on hit plus blocking and it has a range interrupt. Overall, I find that celestial is the way to go for pistol/shield. Soldier hammer is better and carrion p/p is good.

Did we Over React to Leagues and SoloQ?

in PvP

Thiefz.3695

The biggest complaint prior to leagues was what? It was the fact that SoloQ and Team Q were together. It was the argument that a Team was going to be better than a SoloQ team which was handicapped.

The reality was that leagues, just like previous leaderboards, are mostly grind based which has nothing to do with SoloQ vs TeamQ. You can tank your MMR by yourself, don’t need a team so that would have been an issue in SoloQ.

The only impact that teams have had on SoloQ is the deflating of team MMR by diamonds+ambers. That’s it.

If you want to say that Leagues failed because of MMR or because it wasn’t skill based. Those are valid, sure, but that doesn’t mean you need a SoloQ and TeamQ that are separate.

Counting matches , averaging playtime….sounds like farming.

Seriously? Not everyone cheats.

EDIT: I never thought Leagues were about skill. Anyone who thought that forgot the whole leaderboard fiasco that was a grind fest. Leagues is about grinding all the way up to where you can lose tiers. Skill only comes into play at Diamond and legendary. My point is, people who said they would constantly be matched up against teams when playing SoloQ were over reacting in my opinion.

I’ve played about 120 matches and am about halfway through Sapphire. I’ve read a few posts about people who got to Diamond via Solo Q with one or two times going DuoQ. It sounds to me that most people were able to successfully soloq. Also, being a casual PvP player, I figure I will end at Diamond by the end of the season. That’s not bad since diamond was my goal.

While some people have gamed the system for more rewards/faster run to Diamond, I think it worked out fairly reasonably. We still have a few more weeks to go. If there have been 24 days, that means I played about 5 games a day to get to Sapphire. Which equates to about 1.25 hrs of play time a day. Not bad for the time investment.

Thoughts?

Here’s the irony, I see day in and day out the joke made about “esports” this and “esports” that which is a bunch of sarcasm because we know eSports doesn’t exist. However, we all feel that some how because they are “professionals” they need to take things seriously. If we don’t believe in eSports then how can you look at people as “professionals?” If even professionals don’t take it seriously due the amount of balance issues and the lack luster rewards who just want to play for “fun” then you have to put the salt away and realize that it’s just a game.

You may want it to be more but it doesn’t exist. Not the game you are currently playing.

@Thiefz

1) Those teams aren’t actually taking up slots for the tournament. They’ll just skip the ineligible teams and take the top teams that are eligible. I’ve talked to Grouch about this. Also, I don’t know the case for the PZ teams, but The Mist Initiative teams are all formed from different players. They have 5 full Pro League teams and 5 that are mash-ups of players in the guild. I think the best solution would be to implement decay and only show the highest rated team from that guild on the leaderboard. Those fixes are on ArenaNet, though.

2) Amber players don’t deflate their MMR. It deflates their league. The matchmaking will still match them with high MMR players, just not ones in as high a division. Since the league really is just grind at the higher MMR, it’s not giving them easier matches, just quicker pops. For reference, Sunfish would try to solo queue and the queue would auto cancel at two hours. He literally couldn’t get a match.

3) No Pro League players did this. They didn’t need to.

Thanks for responding Olrun. My post was meant to point out the “feelings” and “perceptions” of people on this forum as opposed to the actual truth. The only thing that makes professional players different from other players is money. They are still players at the base and want to have fun. AKA Sunfish’s issue. The perception of Guild Leagues being abused but to your point, there are valid guilds on there.

I think people need to just enjoy the game for what it is and not any perceived idea of “trolling”, “favoritism”, or “bias.”

TLDR: We have put artificial ideals on professional players when they are players first. However this shows how young this eSport still is and how perception can negatively impact it’s growth.
_______________________________________________________________
Here’s a bit more balanced language.

“Since Leagues have formed, professional teams have been showing the gaps in the PvP league and tournament process to the detriment of the game. This is because we would like to hold professional players to a higher standard of game play since Anet is trying to make this a professional sport. However, since Leagues have come out professional players have:
1. Created new groups of Guild teams one after another to show how decay was not functioning on the Guild Leader Board which is what was going to be used to determine placement for the Larger Tournament. Also, with the full knowledge that those Guild teams were ineligible for tournament play and were just taking up slots.

2. Looked for lower MMR/Amber rated players to deflate their own MMR to get better matches in PvP Leagues due to high queue times which made people think they were “trolling” lower levels.

3. Found how to tank MMR really fast in order to get win streaks to get past certain League Divisions.

If these are the individuals that Anet wants as their professional players then there should be a level of professionalism when dealing with the playerbase, especially those Guild teams that are really hoping for placement in the ESL tournament."

The truth is this, professional players are not really professional players in the aspect that some feel that they should be. There are no contracts, there are no sponsors, there is nothing to differentiate these players from other players other than the fact that you view them as professionals. Since there is none of the above, there is no incentive to be any different. Also, professional players are players first and if they need to add some individuals to their team to deflate MMR for matchmaking, that’s an issue with matchmaking and not the players. They do want to play this game for fun.

I personally enjoyed Morwath’s work. I felt like it was more the ESPN version of what was going on with ESL seeing as ESL was focused on the real time moments. However what this shows is that this is still a VERY young eSport.

EDIT: Of the 9 matches I played, only 3 were competitive where the score was 100 points difference or less.

It's about Hybrid Balance

in PvP

Posted by: Thiefz.3695

Thiefz.3695

The issue as it stands has been, even prior than HoT, the mix of Hybrid damage classes. When you have classes that can easily mix condition and normal damage, you create opportunities for imbalance when provided with amulets that max a hybrid build without providing weaknesses. Good teams can also help to bulk up the weaknesses. The reason that you see thief, warrior, DH, and druid falling behind is that the condition clear/sustain of those classes as well as the straight DPS and condition damage of those classes does not compete with anyone else.

This is not new however it is compounding a problem that has been here for quite sometime. Teams need to bring these things to the table : Condition Clear, Stability, straight DPS, condition damage, and boons. The more that a class can bring ALL of it to overlap each other, the better. Shiro/Malyx Revenants are probably the best examples of all the traits you need to be successful in this meta and why they are desirable.

It’s the meta we have and it’s going to stay since going full burst or full bunk is no longer the best.

Nothing needs to be balanced.

in PvP

Posted by: Thiefz.3695

Thiefz.3695

The issue right now is that hybrid classes are over performing based on the fact that they can produce lots of conditions and damage. That is why you are seeing celestial meta. It has been this way prior to HoT. HoT just continued to throw fire on an already problematic issue. Warriors have an issue because they don’t have the condition application that revenant, necros, engineers, and elementalists have. They also don’t have the condition clear. DH’s are going down because they are either a DPS bomb or provide burning which is ‘ok" but they don’t do it well. The classes listed above have better sustain.

Again, this meta is just a continuation of the old meta but right now there is nothing that warrior brings to counter or do better than the classes in the top seeds because hybrid damage is THE BEST way to win fights at the moment.

Nothing needs to be balanced.

Make elites specs buyable with gold

in PvP

Posted by: Thiefz.3695

Thiefz.3695

No, it isn’t B2P the PvE stuff, it’s B2P the entire game. There isn’t GW2 PvE, and then GW2 PvP edition. It’s all one game. MMOs aren’t designed for people who only want to PvP, that’s probably why MOBAs came into prominence like they did. I know I left MMOs for MOBAs because I wanted more/better PvP.

As for esports, you can’t compare this game to LoL/DOTA really, they’re not the same genre. That’s like comparing LoL to CSGO. Yes, they both have a professional scene, but there are different expectations for that scene for each game. And esports is a related but really different topic from this.

They have stuck with b2p, their business model hasn’t really changed. People are getting confused now because you can play the older stuff for free. But it’s like any free trial, once you hit the cap, you gotta buy the new stuff to keep going. But because GW2 isn’t designed like other MMOs, the cap isn’t a particular level and it’s not as clear-cut as other MMO free trials.

The elite specs won’t be buyable with gold. If you want HoT content, you have to buy HoT. If you can’t deal with that, time to try a new game. There’s a bunch of new PvP oriented games coming out/already out right now, many of which are truly F2P. Have at it. I’d list my favorites, but I think that’d get this deleted.

You’re just arguing specifics with me. My point was this, if you can’t play the game without buying it, then it is B2P. If you can download the client and play the game with people who purchased the game, then it’s F2P. The problem is that they mixed F2P and B2P together. If you buy the game, you get 3 things: a new class, new elites, and new heroes for stronghold. That’s it. A F2P player has access to all the amulets, runes, weapons, and classes as someone who bought the game minus those three things. Again, I’m only taking about PvP since this is the subforum we are on.

I understand your point, the reality is that this is a B2P game because the F2P portion is limited and mostly a demo. However, what was sold to people prior to HoT was “It’s free to play and you can start PvP right away without needing anything.” Which was true prior to HoT and continues to be true EXCEPT that revenant and the elites are better than the base classes. Which means the F2P folks are at a disadvantage.

So yes, this is a B2P game but having B2P people mixed with F2P people is going to make things salty.

You could say that most people say Hearthstone is “P2W” but they give you a mechanic to get competitive. I have 2 wings from the latest expansion and it took me about 3 weeks to get enough in game gold for it. That’s not a big deal. However it was free.

As far as MMO, it’s buy to play the PvE portion. However with the Free 2 Play pvp options, you are competitive at the beginning. They broke that with the expansion. It meant that a F2P player and a B2P player were equal in PvP only. That stopped with HoT.

You can debate the MMO potion but with the new push for eSports and trying to get competitive against the likes of DOTA, LOL, and other esports games they now have a different ownership/play model than any of the esport games on the market. They should have stuck with either b2P or f2p and not mixed on the eSport side. That’s the problem they are facing from f2p players and people who bought the game originally who are now in the same boat as f2p players.

Make elites specs buyable with gold

Thiefz.3695

GW2 used to be Buy to Play but then they announced Free to Play. While we all agree that Free to Play is basically a demo of the entire game, its PvP component has always been very good at making it easy to start playing at a competitive level as others. The only issue prior to HoT was skill based.

Hearthstone, DOTA2, LOL, all don’t have subs however you can use in game rewards to purchase updates or you can use cash. For example, Hearthstone has had 3 expansions which you can use in game currency to purchase. While you will have to grind a bit for the expansion cards, it’s available to you.

Now if we look at First Person Shooters, those are Buy to Play. Unless we are talking about Team Fortress 2 which is currently free. Most first person shooters don’t have a free and buy component. I think the issue is that when ANET allowed a F2P component, they now created two classes of gamers where one group has less than the other. People who bought GW2 originally are also in that class.

So the point is this, if you want a game to be buy to play, keep it buy to play. If you want it to be Free to play, then make sure that the PvP options of it (or eSports version) is the same for all players otherwise the PvP component becomes buy to win which is what has happened.

TLDR; Matches are in too many places, put all videos in one place for people to easily search and view. Do post game analysis. Youtube is prefered but only slightly more so.

I reviewed the twitch and the numbers are similar. So for NA games on twitch, they peak at about 1.5k for older ones. The EU numbers are less on twitch but similar in views on Youtube. I think that you can’t use viewership on twitch to determine your viewership strategy. I think you need to look at views post match and I think Youtube is the better medium for putting up videos.

So I think if they are partnered with ESL, then they need all the ESL matches (including weekly) on the ESL youtube page OR they need to put all the weekly matches on the Anet Youtube page so it’s all in one place. I also think that a post match recap should be done to view all weekly and monthly highlights to show how and why they won. If the issue is that PvP in GW2 is too hard/fast to view then you need to break it down for people.

Why is it clear that EU will be more competitive than NA?

I watch the EU ESL very often. It is clear that at the top of EU, there is more than just 1 team which is dominant. However, in the NA, there has not yet been a team to beat Abjured. The EU ESL showed that TCG is competitive with Orange Logo. Now when we talk about middle or low tier, it can be blow outs too. EU certainly has it’s own games of 500-140. When we start seeing the top NA teams getting to mid 400’s against Abjured, that’s when we know the NA scene is competitive.

Which goes to the whole point of viewership, if everyone knows that Abjured is going to stomp most teams, it’s going to get low views. To put it into American Football terms, Patriots have been completely dominant this season except for when they played the Giants. That game was a constant battle. The NA scene doesn’t have those types of moments.

Interesting Viewership Numbers

Thiefz.3695

1. Arena Net’s GW2 youtube channel has more hits than any of the casters. Most of the hits are about half of normal GW2 videos off the main site. Some PvP related videos are about 10%.

2. Looks like EU has the lead in terms of viewership off the Anet site than NA. However it’s clear that EU play is more apt to be competitive than the NA matches.

3. When reviewing the personal channels for streamers or players, how to play a class is 10x more interesting than a PvP match. Hollts, who I don’t see post often in these forms, has some of the highest viewership for PvP play. Jebro’s guides also have 10x more viewers than his PvP events.

4. When reviewing the ESL official Youtube channel, there is nothing about gw2. You’re more apt to get better viewership if your videos are posted there, in my opinion, where it can get more exposure.

So why are “play guides” better viewed than PvP matches? My assumption is that when people want to actually play the game, these are the things they search for first and that gets hit. It’s much easier to follow one person through PvP than an entire team.

I think that you need post play match guides. The shout casters do a great job but even they can’t speak to where the exact place was where a match gets turned around and why. A good back cap or a good wipe, those are easy but with the amount of particle effects going on, you need to be able to slow it down and look at the coordinated play to see what was effective. For new players, you need someone to explain why it was effective.

Guild boon disabled for non-HoT players

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Thiefz.3695

Thiefz.3695

I think the analogies do more harm than good.

People who bought HoT are getting far more loot, access to more guild mechanics, raids, etc for having HoT. That’s fine, you paid for that content. That’s fair. The point is, if you were in a guild prior, you were active, you contribute, but you don’t own HoT then what do you get? Do you get the same experience you had before? The answer is no.

Now there has been reasoning to say why that answer is no but it still seems that a well thought out reward structure would include ways to accommodate people who still had the base game. What has been consistent through this release is that the reward structures both for loot and for guild rewards have changed due to HoT. In GW1, you lost out on story, skins, and new classes with each new release. However the base game didn’t get lost in transition. That is what happened here.

I think that if people were looking at GW2 expansions like GW1 expansions then they were disappointed and I think they have the right to be disappointed. You can’t say that they got all this “free” content for only 50 bucks when the prior GW1 system allowed you to keep your old content while only paying for more not less.

But to the OP’s point, I think giving guild buffs to all guild members regardless of status is only fair based on the ability of the nonHoT guild members being able to donate to the guild in gold and materials.

An MMO pvp is not P2W if you buy the expansion. However I have yet to see WoW try to be eSports or Star Wars or any other MMO. Dota2, LoL, and Hearthstone are fairly competitive and they allow you to use your in game rewards to upgrade your account. There is no way, in either gold or reward tracks, to upgrade to HoT content.

So if balance patches aren’t made to bring Elites in line with the base classes prior to the major tournaments beginning, there will be a reasonable belief that HoT is pay to win. My advice to Anet would be to create elite reward tracks or gold unlocks for Elite lines for free players but only in PvP since their idea about PvP was that you could jump in and start being competitive at the start.

While HOT is still new and people are playing elites for the fun of it, if the meta continues to be elites in eSports tourneys then technically you have to “pay for HOT” to win in the eSports scene. Until you know, someone beats the Abjured with a completely normal group of classes. However, like I said above, anyone who is playing eSports is going to get the release anyway.

Elites vs non elites? Duel it.

in PvP

Thiefz.3695

I actually had thought about this yesterday and was going to post about it but it basically comes down to this:

Anyone who is serious about PvP will buy the game. eSports teams will buy it to make sure they stay competitive with current builds and strategies. They need to scrimmage with and against meta builds so having the full version is key. Also, people who care about their leaderboard or league status are not going to just play with base classes since that would handicap them.

The people who get hurt are people who thought they could play PvP casually as a free to play version but find that the entrance into PvP is very high. If you picked up the free version in October to try it out for PvP and then got hit with these new elites, you’re going to have a bad time. Part of being able to counter a class is knowing the abilities of the class and if you can’t have one, it makes it harder.

So I will just say that it’s not a true P2W but if they don’t balance it well enough, it’s going to cause people looking at GW2 PvP to think that they have to buy the game to be competitive. Although if they improved the tutorial and added good AI to the mist bots, it might not be so bad.

It sounds like you are playing engi. I would agree with the previous post, iron blooded is something I used to run but it’s better to run HGH for the added power/condition damage. The other thing, is that most of the damage now is AOE based. Dragon Hunter traps, ranger traps, ele fields (still old), chronomancer wells, necro wells. You need to be aware of your positioning more than you used to. Go soldier engi unless you know how to play a good bunker engi. There is a DPS creep since patch so traits that get you a high protection up time will help too.

Since patch, I have won most of my engi games but I play celestial bunker engi. The key to bunker is to dodge through traps (if you are playing against a ranger/dragon hunter) and to not stand in wells. If you are getting hit, look at your combat log. See where the damage is from. Also, have good condi clear.

Does this factor in exp. boosters and the fact that the mobs in the new maps seem to be giving significantly more exp. than in old maps?

Doesn’t factor in mob killing or exp boosts. Let’s just say you were able to maintain a plus 100% boost to your xp the entire time you are in there. Congratulations. You cut it to 6 months The point is think about how long an amount of time 3776 events is… That’s the amount of time you will be able to do nothing else in the game.

Silverwastes has shown that people will do the same event over and over if the rewards are good. You also get xp from every piece of the map and from map completion. So while you are going for the achievements, you are also getting exp. Using the events as a measuring stick is a bad idea. Also, if the events get loot then you aren’t just doing it for the gift, you are doing it for the loot which means you get gold. So I think this post is a bit premature.

As an engi, you will want to rifle 4 him when you see him switch attunement (icon over their name). Magnet pull will be too slow for the interrupt. If you use FT, you could try to blast him too or shield 5 for the daze. If you are pistol, use pistol 2 or eg 3. You might want to have a sigil of doom so when you swap to kit/weapon you can hit him with poison.

EDIT: You can also use grenades for the chill after you do the interrupt if you have it. Otherwise you could do a sigil of hydromancy. If you can CC, poison and chill then you have locked them out of healing.

If you wanted Mawdry, you had to do a limited amount of fractals (5) to get it. I did my five and didn’t do any more. If you wanted to get your gifts for your weapons, you had to do about 8 dungeon runs. There will always be an incentive, as long as the gifts require dungeon tokens, to do dungeons. They just wont be as effective for gold however I dispute that in the long term but regardless, people will still have incentives to do dungeons just like the incentive they have to do fractals.

Burn builds are like turret engis

I was told over the weekend by a burn guard “so muc bunk”. I out played his burns and kept him poisoned so long that he couldn’t heal that much. It took a 2v1 burst build to take me out. That happens far more often with thieves as well that try a burst on you. Just a reminder that bunkers do exist for a reason and this meta will continue to require bunkers.

I would say that since damage is normalized like the posters above stated, your best learning opportunity is to go to metabattle to view the current top classes/builds. Get a review of the builds so you know what you are facing when you go into a match. Also hit the ‘b’ button go bring up the roster and see what the opposing team has for players. Based on the metabattle listing, you should know what each of the builds are on the opposing team about 50% of the time.

That’s not a critical piece though, when you engage your opponent, you want to see what they are using for weapons which will dictate the skills they are using. Is this a P/P thief or d/p? Is this a staff guardian or sword/focus? What’s the warrior using for weapons? This will let me know what skills I need to use.

My advice is to start with a bunker/celestial build which can be more forgiving for new players. It will give you the most amount of stats to survive. So focus on surviving your fights. Most of the time, if you can clear conditions and heal yourself while putting out a moderate amount of damage, then you can out sustain your opponent provided you have secured the point.

The second thing to look at for win/loss is what points you have in your favor. Make sure you always have 2 points with your team’s color to ensure you are gaining points. Fight around the point. It’s ok to flee if you think you can go to a point that has less defenders.

The key to the early learning cycles is to learn how to survive encounters. Once you have learned how each class plays against you, then you can start to focus on offensive builds which require more experience and have more reward.

Good luck.
