In my opinion, this is the ranking of professions (with a brief description) of small-group (~3-10) combat in WvW:
1. Warrior – control, mobility, damage, everything but sustain (hammer being the most effective weapon of choice with either S/X or GS on swap to disengage from the thick of a fight/GS for amazing down-cleave)
2. Necromancer – great AoE damage/pressure if allowed, decent utility, bad mobility and priority target (Power works also with slightly less AoE damage and more single-target)
3. Mesmer – AoE burst/DPS, decent single-target DPS, stealth, combat mobility/slippery, not too much group utility, contribution to DPS is very player/skill dependent (PU builds are garbage outside of 1v1)
4. Guardian – great support through mainly stability and heals, highest sustain and damage mitigation if focused when played properly, decent control, low mobility with most weapons or builds, great at stomping/reviving
5. Engineer – lots of damage mitigation if played properly, tons of utility, mediocre to great damage depending on the player and build/spec, essentially a wild card
6/7. Elementalist – high burst with S/D (hardly any damage mitigation compared to other burst roles), lower damage with other weapon sets, decent mobility/control and awesome sustain with D/D (if not completely trained/focused), staff being too slow/not suited for smaller fights although slippery, other classes bring the same utility with more to offer
6/7. (Power) Thief – great single-target DPS (main utility – something else other classes can do more effectively in most situations), occasional high AoE DPS, hardly any utility outside of stomping downed players/reviving allies but with more risk than Guardian, (Condition Thieves are garbage)
8. Ranger – high damage with longbow, nothing but annoying with anything else, low survivability, hardly any utility outside of Binding Roots (Rangers are essentially the same thing as an up-leveled character)
Of the three classes you mentioned, Necromancer would most likely be the easiest to pick up, Mesmer for a slightly higher learning curve assuming you’re playing a burst shatter build, and I wouldn’t bother with Elementalist honestly (although personally feel it’s probably the most fun class).

Phantasm Mesmer, M/S + GS Warrior, Engineer, power Thief.
Thanks for the duels [Bsty].
I should post a pic of every tower I see with people in it too.
Fun outnumbered 3vX fights this morning.
A Borlis Pass [vT] asura Necro is a beast – I got wrecked by him
Clownmagic OP.
Looking forward to this match-up — Ehmry Bay is always the most fun to fight against.
OH EM GEE.
Add a Race Change Contract next please, ANet.
There’s a hacking asuran Guardian on NSP with an account name of Dajjal.5268. I forget the guild, something all lowercase I believe starting with the letter T. Just a heads-up to anyone who notices him — what he does is teleports out of combat, across the map, etc. Thanks for reporting him, XOXO members we had a great outnumbered fight with.
1500+ power before Bloodlust or might

“Havoc chasing in a zerg”
That’s a new one.
Your job is to drop people while not getting dropped, and getting stomps when they’re safe enough to get. This becomes harder the more enemies are involved, but that’s really all there is to it. The same goes for other professions, but it happens more quickly both positively and negatively with the Thief. Lots of people can scout or have high mobility, it’s not exclusive to the Thief profession.

A big shout-out to all of the roamers and guild groups we came across this week. These skilled group fights are the only reason I play this game, and I’m sure the same goes for so many of you.
So, thank you to everyone we fought. Keep up the good work, and keep roaming alive.
We didn’t run into you guys much but you guys are definitely the best roaming from BP. Good coordination and group make up without cheese BS builds. Keep on truckin.
Thanks, some of us have been wanting to fight you guys for several months from way back when we were on Anvil Rock.

Ogre Runes are my favorite, but I use Traveler Runes for convenience.
Ruby Orbs, Ogre Runes, Scholar Runes, Lyssa Runes, or Traveler Runes are the only choices:
- Ruby Orbs for cheap DPS
- Ogre Runes for raw damage + Rock Dog blocking attacks and 1k per hit
- Scholar Runes for the most potential raw damage
- Lyssa Runes for condition clear + stability (and all other boons)
- Traveler Runes for guaranteed mobility and freedom of build/healing skill
Centaur Runes and Divinity Runes are preference, but aren’t as good as the above.
40-50% critical chance is all you need for any Thief build.

The few nights I’ve played this week I’ve had a blast. Good to see Btsy again and vT, mad props to you guys – always enjoy the challenge
.
You too man, it’s nice seeing Yaks that stray from the herd. Every night this week has been fun (when our skills are actually going off).
Had some great fights with vT and NoQQ at BP spawn in YBBL. I was the silver assaulter commander. Lol it went on for like 20 mins. Fun!
Lol yeah, nobody else mattered but you and the Charr Guardian to be honest. You two alone were keeping us in check against your mini-zerg. It was fun.
Good fights tonight, especially against you [AD] and [Bsty] guys.
Entertaining video — especially when you turned around on the [Zero] Thief.
Yeah, that was tons of fun.
Fights in that area for probably like a solid 4 hours.
SOMEONE IS MAD.
Oooo, someone from vT. I have to say, you guys hit like trucks. Props to the blue haired mohawk thief, if that is you. You have some mad deeps.
Thanks man, I believe you and your Mesmer friend just ate my lunch like 20 mins ago. haha
Might have been XOXO guys though.
I was on yesterday around this time roaming with an XOXO, that was the first time I’ve seen your guild. Haven’t been on in the past 2 hours though and won’t be until tonight sadly.
Oh, a lot of us have been in SAB or making gold because of the broken match-up system. What class and race do you play? I may remember. I’m usually with Agrïope, our D/D Ele with two Incinerators.

Superior Rune of the Traveler + Signet of Shadows give 30% movement speed at battle?
No, whichever movement speed you have applied to yourself will overwrite the slower ones. If you were running Traveler runes and had Swiftness, you’d be running 33% faster because Swiftness takes over. Speed doesn’t stack, you don’t run at 50% with two 25% speed buffs.

If they’re the first ones, they’re Commando shoulders that you can get through the story quests as a reward. If they’re the second ones, then they’re attainable for a few badges in WvW as a skin. I’m pretty sure they’re the second ones. Have a look at this website:

I don’t play sPvP because I try to have fun. Same with everyone else I know in the game. WvW has more PvP than sPvP.

Two most popular builds as far as I know for WvW Thieves. They both take the stealth regeneration trait, and choose between initiative regeneration or Hidden Killer/Executioner.

It helps to understand how stealth and revealed works.

You’re very welcome.
If you look at your buff bar, you have a little sword icon which is what’s reapplying the torment. No, it’s not a bug.
Because this one Elementalist reflects all of our attitudes as a server combined.
Because a few ran from you reflects all of our attitudes?
I didn’t say anything, and I don’t reflect the attitude of our entire server. Are you learning yet?
I’m not crazy about this match-up. While it’s fun to really work on being able to fight 1vX fights, it gets tiresome when that seems to be all that there is. Oh well, I just don’t think this can possibly be fun for CD either.
I haven’t seen many people from either side gloating/laughing/corpse jumping when I get zerg-stomped though, so that’s nice.
I believe some CD players are actually making an effort to /salute those from DH and HoD who actually try to defend towers and keeps against the numbers.
(edited by Thorp.7982)
If you’re going to pat yourself on the back for defending your northern camp, do please frap it and upload it. So few of those fights are worth /flexing over due to the fact that anyone who is killed can immediately rez and return to the fight.
Now I fail to see how I was “patting myself on the back for defending our northern camp”? I was only pointing out that your people will run away from a fight leaving their teammates to die before the outcome of that fight is even decided.
Now withdrawing from a fight with the intention of returning and rezzing fallen team members is understandable but taking off in full flight because you got hit once? And with no intention of returning? I lost sight of her as she went down towards the ne camp so she wasn’t coming back. I suppose the opposition was just too much and she saw the writing on the wall.
So please do not accuse another server of running away when your own does the same.
Because this one Elementalist reflects all of our attitudes as a server combined.
In this game, when it comes to movement speed, the fastest speed buff you have overrides the others you have.
I like these runes, I’ve been using them for a while now and it opens up more options for traits which is nice. The loss of DPS by choosing these runes can be partially made up by picking up the might dodge trait or just going 10 into DA (with popular WvW builds in mind).
It makes a huge difference for outnumbered or larger fights.
I think HoD needs more Rangers.
In all honesty though, this match-up is kittened — just shows how broken the current system is.
(edited by Thorp.7982)
Mesmer, Thief, or Warrior for duo-roaming in WvW with a Thief because they can have high mobility and/or stealth.
Come to the Kaineng windmill for duels.
My point is for me victory is fighting against horrifying odds and breaking even or better. Tower siege is boring, running around and finding quality fights is fun. Outnumber me if you must, what’s the worst that happens? I lose.
I applaud you for your mentality. Too many people seem to forget this is just a videogame.
To those [vT] guys, quite impressive how you run a 1-man frontline and a couple of backline players so well in such a small party size. Unfortunately my group got attracted to that tanky Juggernaught-wielding Charr too much to focus down the squishy casters behind, leading to a wipe on several occasions.
The charr you’re referring to is known as Moose Man Jones. Also, he’s mostly Berserker gear.
You use movement speed through stealth or swiftness to stick on a target, chaining Cloak and Dagger on things until you’re on your target. If they’re too far, then you should have stuck closer to them.
Tested this with a friend before and we found that you could see an enemy Thief’s Shadowstep utility ring, but not the ring from the sword’s Infiltrator’s Strike. This was before they changed the distance, so things may have changed, but I doubt it.
Our guild has been having a blast this past week on Crystal Desert — the action doesn’t seem to stop no matter what time of day or night it is. Hope to see Ehmry Bay again in the future (or this next match-up), you guys always put up fun fights.
Other than the 1 small man we know about on CD, any other small mans actively run 5 people on any of these servers or is it all just “meta ppt” land? Truthfully?
GF and GH come to mind, from Ehmry Bay. GF has some of the best players I’ve seen, but neither of these two guilds always run in small numbers like you’d like. Usually 5-10 depending on what’s going on, but closer to 5. As for BP, none come to mind, and I haven’t been on Crystal Desert long enough to know of any others besides my guild.
Stack the kitten out of the power stat with all power armor/weapons/trinkets with Minor Sigil of Bloodlust on your weapons, and six different +10 power minor runes in your armor.
Well warriors arent really effective in large groups either.. in fact I don’t think any melee are..
I think hammer Warriors are pretty strong in all sorts of combat in WvW. But I agree with you, melee is pretty rough in large groups.
