Sparc, you just inspired me to organize what the OP has suggested.
We’ve already been sending raids into EoTM when our normal opponents won’t fight us. Now you can expect that to be our off-night raid, too.
Go ahead, IMHO it will be a waste of your time, because people like me will find (either a new game to enjoy – or) other ways to enjoy GW2 (and make “massive profits”)…
Good luck with your [not very rewarding] EOTM defending

For all we know there is still a archive older than check mark in forum software for a high level admins. It really is not high level tech, in fact they could probably make a couple lines of code in SQL to make it impossible even now.
Spot on. Auto-close on a time interval is absolutely a common feature of forum software. It went into Discourse.org before they hit version 1.0. It’s always possible and relatively easy, when you can code for it server-side.
ANet is using a white-label version of some limited distribution forum software that another company made for themselves, and I can’t remember that other company right now. It’s a B2B license, though. They could get it done.
This is a special case middle-finger sort of rule, no doubt.

Why dont they auto lock all threads older than 30 days if they dont want us to post in them? This is beyond stupid.
I would assume because they thought people were mature enough to not necro threads of the reason of necroing them?
It is not really that hard to not necro a thread. You are required to know the rules of the forums after all.
This is also why we no longer require libraries nor public discussion of ideas dated older than 30 days.

Arrow carts don’t require line of sight. If you can’t see it, doesn’t mean it can’t see you.
Always keep moving. Maintain constant water fields and blast them. Clear condis.
Almost all the time, the people who die under ac fire are the ones that stand still.
Yes, they do. It was added relatively recently. You get a “no line of sight” error when trying many of the shots that back-of-wall and other clever placement used to accomplish.
And like I said, it has some leeway in it. It’s not a literal line-of-sight. It’s just trying to prevent things like building one inside a tower and firing directly onto the opposite side of the nearest wall, as was done in third-party software zoom unlocks.

I think it is a good time for a CDI.
I seriously hope this is a troll otherwise …. why exactly would we need another CDI that accomplishes nothing.
Perhaps a CDI about the delay in having a new CDI?
No reason to continue to necro old threads, let’s keep it civil
The reason was to bring back and re-display the previous ANet statements on the subject. Probably the exact reason that brought on the announcement that this would be infracted behavior, now.
So, the only recourse now will be to ensure that these threads never expire to 30 days without a player response.

Some how the carts are able to hit us on the other side of gate even though this out of line of sight. can somebody explain that as well?
The cart can fire at the gate itself, and the skill effect radius puts arrows outside of the tower.
The cart’s line-of-sight has some leeway on it, and that means seeing through the hole above a gate, or over the edge of a wall, tends to work more often than not.
The counter to arrow carts is longer range siege, or the skills to survive it. WvW guard masteries (the vitality one, and the flame ram iron will ones) often come in there. Another example is ranger’s barrage skill, and elementalist’s dragon tooth and meteor.

Variable PPT is a silly idea.
6 hour frames is the sweet spot.
…
That doesn’t mean that framing and splitting the matches will not lead to significantly improved balance of matches. It means that the improvement is relative to the fact that we just have too many servers on the board, creating too much distance between relative team populations.
“Small mans” can stop being small men and enjoy a target rich environment with the rest of us around to potentially mess it up.

Has WvW changed much in the past year? Has it gotten better or worse?
People here will say worse. Technically, it’s correct for ANet to claim that they’ve made significant changes to WvW in the past year.
The base 4 maps, however, do not feel or play any different than they did before the changes.
Which classes are the most needed in WvW right now? Which classes are the most nerfed and to be avoided?
Meta is warrior, guardian, elementalist, necromancer, with mesmer and thief assist. GWEN for short.
People still bag on Ranger all day, errday. Rangers still roam.
Engineer is kinda like playing Ranger, in regard to prevalence and its players attitude toward the meta game and zerging. It doesn’t get bagged on like Ranger, though. Non-engi knows less about engi than non-ranger knows about ranger.
How bad are queues? I see the server I’m on (Tarnished Coast) is T1, am I always going to be waiting in queues? I’ll only have a couple hours of playtime a day, I don’t want to spend most of it waiting in a queue.
You have the EoTM map to play in while queued. I doubt that even T1 has queues like you remember. I’m T2 and fought against them during tournament that just ended.

Disagreeing is tantamount to wanting equal reward for showing up, and is wrong.
I would receive #6 rewards.
I disagree that the league brackets can’t be effective on this. Being better up to the time the league season starts is what qualifies a team for that superior opportunity. This would actually disincentivize late stacking of a weaker server, a’la Henge of Denravi this time around.

Legit zoomhack (third-party executable) is far more powerful than multi-monitor use.
Just imagine the further zoom-out you get on fighting large world bosses in PvE. Now imagine no limit and self-control of that. It’s simple. Google is OP if you still don’t get it.
Improved line-of-sight requirement has fixed this as a thing to complain about, though. Ignore people that disagree. They’re wrong.

I can’t imagine ever reaching out for PvE playing, uplevel, non-guild players for help in WvW. They are rally-bots.
This happens quite a bit. It’s other rally-botting types that do it, but it gets done. PvE zones are also a major source of PvX guild recruitment, where the real intent is to build a bigger rally-zerg for the rally-boss’ regular “WvW raid”.

Ok, so this was 5 months ago, cough cough. I looked over his responses. There was only one mention of breaking up the 24 hour cycle, but it only affected scoring. Lots of talk about spies and transfers to the winningest server, aka bandwagoning, apparently.
Devon didn’t mention anything like we have been discussing here, so I guess color me “hopeful”?
It was the EoTM CDI, regarding applying its technology to other WvW maps: March 14th. Yes, color you hopeful for this idea. Devon wants to do something about this.
5) There was a very wide ranging discussion about match times. I think we came to the consensus that there isn’t a consensus, see what I did there?, about if shorter matches would be good. I think there is some room to experiment, but it does seem like people feel there is value to the length that WvW currently runs.
That’s why I’m helping to flesh out and prove it. It’s working, plausible, and interesting. It’s directly in line with the type of changes they’ve been willing to attempt thus far. It compromises well between the opposing views of that CDI.
RvR isn’t “endgame”, it’s the only game. Cu in CU.
BTW, I looked back some 30 pages of WvW forum threads, but didn’t find your CDI. I guess this was a long time ago? So, I have to go with what’s here…
It’s the most recent of Devon’s WvW ones to date.
Devon’s proposal, based on the thread at the time, was shortening the whole match, not dividing longer matches in the way we’ve discussed here.
It did get shot down, and Devon’s summary recognition of that reasoned the rejection as being for the players’ enjoyment of the longer week-long struggle. The timeframing we’ve proposed does that, solving complaints that lead to the shorter match suggestion and rejection.

The sorts of people that mostly PvE are the kinds of people that want easy content for high rewards. Who would rather relax and take things easy.
They don’t want to PvP or WvW due to the ‘competitive’ nature of it, their competition is usually in the form of TP flipping and auto attacking at world bosses and then comparing the results.
WvW is really where the community of GW2 is made beyond the servers, 2 week updates etc. Otherwise GW2 would be the game you solo for dailies, check out new content every 2 weeks and group up once a week for guild missions.
You may not realize the irony yet, but you just described the majority of “PvX” players, and something approaching half of all guilds that enter WvW.

That’s part of why I’ve argued for deletion of the smallest world servers. They’re technologically and socially redundant today.
That can still happen. It’s a separate issue, but neither precludes the other.
They don’t, but I think that this is an acceptable alternative, largely because it’s easier to accomplish without hard changes to the system.
Variable PPT is a silly idea.
6 hour frames is the sweet spot. 8 is too long and irregular: Asia/Oceania is too big to contain in an 8 hour frame. 6 hour frames retains the UTC 0 reset scheduling.
This week’s Kaineng-Ferguson-Darkhaven match is one of the biggest timeframe swinging matches, but it’s also one of the most balanced for 24-hour matches. That complicates justifying the change with a numbers argument.
At a glance of a few of this week’s matches, it seems to me that server performance is more normal across timeframes than many seem to believe, and at the very least it is unlikely that a timeframed leaderboard is going to be significantly different from the 24-hour one. It will be different, but the difference is less than the hype says.
That doesn’t mean that framing and splitting the matches will not lead to significantly improved balance of matches. It means that the improvement is relative to the fact that we just have too many servers on the board, creating too much distance between relative team populations.

I’ll rephrase, then. Sure, a lot of players would like to see something like what you’re suggesting. They’d also like to see it as a separate map/mode, and I know many of them don’t like their fights being interrupted.
You can not expect the uninterrupted part of that in WvW, because chivalry doesn’t exist there, and I think it’s funny: both that the fights get interrupted, and that the participants complain about it (part of the goal in interrupting those fights!)
RvR isn’t “endgame”, it’s the only game. Cu in CU.
(edited by Virtute.8251)
Virtute’s #3 is the most advanced stage. It seems it’s all in use in ANet’s technology today, but would need to be rewired a bit.
I thought about preserving the score and as well as the state of the maps for each frame during a week long match. I don’t know how their data structures look like behind the curtain, so this may be very hard to implement.
I can’t speak for the exact technology, but I recognize their terminology and can tell you this: devs use the word “shard” in reference to WvW home servers, and if their using it literally it means they are using a document-oriented database engine, not a relational one. It also means that world/home server separation is server clustering, and that they scale each “world” by adding or subtracting cluster members as needed.
That’s part of why I’ve argued for deletion of the smallest world servers. They’re technologically and socially redundant today.
Also, eight hours is IMO too long for a person to see through from end to end. Being there start to finish for a match frame would give you the satisfaction and seeing it finished. It would also remove the pain of logging off wondering whether all your hard work gets undone, which is a common complaint of night-capping victims.
I choose 3 intervals of 8 hours because we have 3 logical regions: Americas, Europe, Asia. Oceania falls inside the Asian timeframe, because it is longitudinally in the same region of the globe.
I disagree with the bulk of the night-cap complaint, because I disagree fundamentally with the mindset from which it speaks. We aren’t entitled in any way to what that mindset expects. I think this proposal is interesting and would be amusing to play within. I don’t argue for it on terms of temporal fairness.
It’s more reasonable to give the wider 8 hour range, allowing a broader range of participants to contribute to that frame’s progress. The narrower 6 hour or 4 hour ranges increase down-time (an additional 30 minutes for each frame added), and each frame also spawns a separate leaderboard and set of glicko2 calculations. This also complicates the argument of naming a dominant server on the whole.

Have you considered getting on your server’s TeamSpeak?
Most servers use this to communicate across all maps and coordinate forces
Most servers have the capability. Most servers also have a majority refusal to utilize it. This is actually for the best. We don’t actually want the majority of these people to spend much time trying to communicate… it gets ugly.
It’s great entertainment, though!
