I’m going to assume that OP did not play Guild Wars 1, If you farmed for Obsidian armor you would agree that this is just a minor speed bump

With the addition of having TP in GW2 you’ve made a valid point here. I totally agree with you, but I question if this a good design point considering that it is just 1 weapon and well for me at least the skins are rather bad.kittenthose good sweet long GW1 days when I had the time… Cheers dude !

Sigil of Accuracy does not update the crit showed on your character screen (H).

It is believed that currently this Sigil works only with the weapon skills of the weapon it is in.

For example :

A ranger is using Sword/Axe
There is a Sigil of Accuracy in the Sword
Only the Sword skills (1-3) receive a boost

If you read Colin Johanson’s post, you will know exactly what to expect.

I couldn’t believe my eyes when I read it. It helped me understand that GW2 is a PvP game. Not a PvE game. There is some PvE content. But it has been designed by people (maybe just one guy ?) who does not understand how PvE works.

He thinks that putting in Tetris-HardMode in his dungeons will make them harder. He does not understand what makes games fun. He does not understand the concept “teach your players while they play the game”. He does not understand the concept of “gradual learning curve”. He does not understand the phrase “easy to learn, hard to master”. He doesn’t understand what the average player will think when he reads the words “Story Mode”.

The new form of “heart quests” for quests is a step back for MMO players, imho. It limits the variety of quests. It limits the story-telling of quests. Public Dynamic Events are usually a zerg. Fun sometimes, but a bit simplistic. The whole design and architecture behind the dungeons is just “kittied in the head”. This all makes me believe that the PvE-designers are trying, but just don’t get it.

And then Colin makes a post that it is all “working as intended”. And then they make changes in the opposite direction of what was needed.

It is clear. This game is not for me. It’s not a PvE game (too bad for the art-designers who made a beautiful world). It’s not for bad players, it’s not for average players, it’s not even for players who are slightly above average (as I consider myself). The PvE-content is only for the creme-de-la-creme (the very best).

Let’s make a game that costs $100m. Let’s make it so beautiful that it sells 4m boxes, so we can barely make back our initial money. Then make the PvE-content so hard, and so limited, that the masses will stop play soon. And we’ll never make any profit.
Brilliant business plan !

Gryz, while I agree with you I thin you are too extreme here, after all this is a MMO and those things (read It’s not a PvE game) are to be expected. The real thing here is as you nailed it :

What the average player will think when he reads the words “Story Mode”.

I’ll keep my hopes high. I beleive ArenaNET will address these issues and some design changed will come in the near future. If they take a page out of Riot Games’ (hey, they even designed a whole cave based on Riot’s lead designer Morello, former college of theirs I hear, thumbs up for that) book and start making more frequent and detailed post on the forums, people like me and you won’t be posting such extremes.

I don’t think this is a case of “Kitten that loser”.

Reading a lot of post.. i think that the best advice for that people is:

Don’t rush max level. GW2 Is about the journey, the exploration, discovering things.
Every time you go to a new area. Stay alert of World events. They are large, difficult and some are amazing.

My picture, started like any other attack… and end with an epic boss fight(and is not a dungeon).

Drop rates seems to be lower

in Players Helping Players

Wayfinder.8452

Entirely not true, just change maps and farm something else for a while.

I’ve tested this and it seems (i’ll call it) IT remembers what area you farmed for a prolonged period of time and doesn’t reduce the drop penalty until some requirements are met (time spent in another zone, time spent offline, number of monsters in another zone or a different area in the same zone, all of these seem to effect drop rate reduction).

I call this genious not dreadful. Having all players in easy to farm spots is dreadful for the game. I feel that if they had publicly announced this to non-GW1 players there wouldn’t be so much whining about it on the forums.

With the dungeon changes, this works even better.

You want an explanation why they did what they did?

Anet told us before this game was released explorable wasn’t meant for pugging, it was meant for guild runs with communication etc. Yet everyone was doing speedruns of a certain path and you don’t think that’s supposed to be fixed?

Grow some balls, and actually play this game. Try some different paths instead, you might like the rewarding feeling it gives when you complete an actual challenging dungeon.

THANK YOU ANET FOR NOT NERFING CONTENT, BUT BUFFING IT INSTEAD. Don’t listen to these people and keep your promise about explorable supposed to be hard.

Exactly THIS. I am mostly casual when it comes to gaming, but I totally agree with this.
They buffed dungeons, but did not break them. Speed-farming was an issue ! Well said Toffy !

If you think speed clearing via exploits was OK, then you probably were one of the dudes making 10g per hour in CoF.

CoF completed in ~1 minute? Are you serious. It was a ~20 min run, yes it was easier than most, but it was giving me my gear that I so desperately need. Our group wiped 4 times before calling it. Kept wiping around the 60% mark.

I might have missed a 0 there… Sorry. My bad.
Have you tried running 1-2 mesmers and focusing on Combo fields, Swiftness and chaos armor ? I’ve watched a friend do it 3 times in a row. 10g is with MF gear, I hope everyone understood that, for future posts I’ll elaborate.
Also I agree that it isn’t rewarding. A friend tested it for me, since I am at work… That’s a tad bit too extreme.

Wayfinder.8452

I understand that I’ll be swarmed by a lot of people here, but please bear with me for a few more lines.

Explorable Mode

As stated in another thread the current difficulty of dungeons is a very shifty thing. Can you please elaborate on how specific dungeons were and are going to be balanced ?
Currently many dungeons feel easy while others feel hard but there isn’t a consistent curve. AC feels much harder than CM and some routes (say route 2) in CoF was viewed as easy farm.

I’m not whining here. I just wanna make a point that even after recent patches, dungeon difficulty needs to be adjusted to be roughly the same or at least taken a look at.
Adding more beef to CM, CoF and dungeon’s overall is a great start !
Regretably the rewards seem too low now.

Another problem in dungeons is the lack of variety in the challenges that you face. As stated in the post bellow, dungeon battles suffer from lack of variety and ridiculous health pools on some enemies. Rather than being a real issue here, this might be viewed as a questionable polish when it comes to dungeons.

If possible, please give us some info on your reasoning behind the latest and future changes.
Something to chew on.

Story Mode

As the name implies, this is supposed to be something that has to do with the story of the game, it’s characters and your own. The genre of the game has kittenised this completely. People want to speed run dungeons and that is to be expected, but bringing casual and hardcore players in the same instance and assuming they will have the same goals is for me an extremely bad design even if not forced.

It’s already hard for me to make a party for my casual guildmates or for myself when I feel like it. Casual players want to be able to stay behind talk to the NPC and get some immersion into the Lore of the game you ArenaNET have created.

As it is, because of the game being a MMO and dungeons in Story Mode not scaling with party size, it doesn’t feel like Story Mode at all. Can you please provide some minor insight on how you are going to address this, if you think it is an issue at all.

I might get trashed here, I hope I don’t. For me explore mode dungeons are rather easy and not rewarding at the moment, but for my casual guildies they feel extremely hard and that is perfectly normal. That’s the way the game is supposed to be. On the other hand Story Mode feels like a demo version of Explorable Mode. Please, give more options for both casual and hardcore players. I and I hope we the players understand that this game is all about bringing MMO and RPG back together, however as it is dungeons need a lot of polish in both Explorable and Story Mode.

Thanks for reading !

That sounds awesome. That dungeon was extremely easy.

Feeling Kinda Blah

in Ranger

Posted by: Wayfinder.8452

Wayfinder.8452

I run a Sword/Axe and Axe/Warhorn ranger since launch and it’s been a blast. I can see how the normal crappy DPS build can be boring.

Traits are 0/5/20/15/30
Taking Off-hand Mastery, Natural Healing and Improved F2 for spiders and canines.
The rest of the traits I change depending of the area I am in.

Generally for PvE I use Zephyr + Sic’Em and 1 signet (speed or renewal).
I take Rampage as One as an elite, because both my weapon sets have a skill that stacks Might incredibly fast on my pet which coupled with Forifying Bond and Protection on dodge roll makes my pet a juggernaut.

When I’m in party I run Search and Rescue, Muddy Terrain and a signet depending on the location. Taking an elite that’s the most useful to the team (Spirit for party wipes and Entangle when there are big mobs).

I use full Cleric’s armor and accessories, Knight’s weapons.

Being rather tanky has it’s good sides. I can stay in melee dodge with Serpent strike when a big hit is coming or dodge with a dodge roll if completely dodging isn’t an option. I tend to use my leap to trigger comboes rather than for defense. Hey, we have a Mesmer… Chaos Armor… here I come ! Giving a Fire shield or something else to you, your pet and/or some random ally is as flashy as it gets.

I generally play support, always running Healing Spring in party. Having a Whirl combo from my axe which shoots bolts that heal for ~110 (on top of 12% Vulnerability) and then disengaging and landing a leap combo in the water field makes my heal even stronger. When we need more damage I switch out my signet or shout and take another combo field (mostly Fire trap).

I should also mention that the 5th Axe skill reflects most projecticles in PvE and blocks even more of them. I use it to great success when an ally is down and another player is ressing to prevent any dmg to the 3 (4 of us with search and rescue) of us.

I can buff my party with Axe/Warnhorn, as well as provide easy AoE which comboes with Muddy Terrain is a blast. I’ve won more than one fight by dropping Muddy tarrain and having the party move in circle around the helpless mob. Muddy Terrain last 20 seconds, makes them immobile for 2 and has a wooping 24 seconds cooldown if you take 20% cooldown reduction.

I use a Wolf and a Cave spider. The Cave spider provides an on demand Weakness + Cripple + 2% Vulnerability (2% !) and a poison combo field, while my Wolf has a superb disengage, that if used smart can save your party more than once. I tend do use the spider only when we need weakness or when attacking from range is better.

I dodge like a monkey, buff my pet like a madman, trigger comboes whenever I can and heal extremely well. For more juice I use a full set of Lyssa runes, random boons on heal and a devastating improvement to whatever elite I am running might not make me look flashy but sure feels powerful.

I hope that helps.

I do agree that we lack flashy stuff, but being a ranger has it’s own perks.
My English might be rather bad, sorry about that. Have fun !

This is the old GW1 anti-grind tool. Works flawlessly here.

Lemme give you a tip. There is this one mission like many others where you can kill 500 dredge per hour. What do you think will happen if the anti-grind script wasn’t here ?

What do you think will happen when all kinds of bots pop up ?

Your argument is just silly and the anti-grind thingy can easily be avoided by moving in a circle around the zone you are farming and killing all kinds of mobs you encounter.

i’m trying to get weak blood to level weaponsmithing. i was farming trolls for an hour and got ten, it’s been another hour and i’ve only received one.

There are a number of creatures in almost every zone that drop the same crafting ingredient. Try moving to another spot. The reasons why drops are decreased when farming the same spot are bots, monopoly and exploits. I hope that helps !

I agree with you, bu I believe what you are saying is too extreme. I’d say we should be allowed to craft Dungeon Sets and Mystic Forge Legendaries or Mystic Weapons at a reduced cost which rewards you for leveling your crafting skill. That or reduce crafting prices a bit, a very tiny bit.

Crafing flawlessly follows GW1’s itemization model, which is :
1. Maxed out items are accessible to all players
2. Cool looking items are hard to get

I love this boh in GW1 and GW2, ArenaNET has done an awesome job and we shouldn’t go to such extremes criticizing it.

Rangers pets to weak defensively

in Ranger

Wayfinder.8452

If you run a Beastmastery build your pet will rarely die if at all.
If you don’t run a Beastmastery build your pet will most likely have to be a bear or a devourer.
This is all by design. The sole reason the bear pets are pure tanks is so you can use them with little to no points invested in Beastmastery. It’s the same for every other class, not investing in their Class Feature makes it less reliable.

With some healing my Wolf tanks bosses like the last boss in TA Explore mode and minor bosses in every other dungeon without dieing at all. Pets are also immune to almost every scripted AoE effect in dungeons and events (400 damage around Claw of Jormag etc.).

If you are talking about sPvP, that’s another story…

Wayfinder.8452

I’ll take what GW2 gives me over any of those features any day every day.
I am glad they removed announcements, but if they bring them back they should allow players to disable them as there are more casual players here. The game needs a lot of work in the GvG and PvP areas. If they improve that the game will be much more awesome.

The guild panel is horribad, but other stuff is simply amazing.

As a fellow GW1 ver I gotta say you need to be less focused on the server crap. They wanted to give us WvW and that’s the way it played out. I sure don’t miss the old districts thing, but hey having individual overflows for FR, DE, etc. servers would be awesome. A lot of new players don’t even know when they are in the overflow. “Why u talks in english this is a ** server !?”

I was a bit of a hardcore player before, now I moved on to a more casual playstyle, so I can say that both sides of the coin shine just a much and deserve just as much repsect. I hope the game keeps improving in both areas.

It might have something to do with melee and short range combat in general.

I think you can avoid the swimming problem by using amphibious pets.

That doesn’t work, at least for me.

I agree that this should be fixed or tweaked a bit, this Trait is kinda up atm anyway if you run high BM. Maybe make it semi permanent until the pet gets downed or is swapped, but reduce stacks to 15 and make them scale better will levels.

Might doing nothing on pets?

It works for me. I am running a Rampage as One build with 30 beastmastery and the damage on my pet with 25 stacks increases by ~300-500 on normal hits and about double on crits. Along with Sic Em’ I’ve seen my Wolf crit for 3000 without the 30% extra damage trait. My whole build revolves around stacking might on my pet and I can also confirm that Might gained from 1H sword’s third hit as it applies Might only to the pet does give it a damage boost.

I also tested if the tool tips update, I can not confirm if they do so correctly as they seem to update kinda randomly. I can only say that when I have Might and my Wolf has an equal amount of Might stacks further stacks DO update the pet attack tooltips.

TLDR Might works on pets but tooltips are a bit buggy or slow to update.

As stated above characters in this game (Destiny’s Edge excluded) are all bland and just more of the same.
What bugs me the most is that your home disctrict is discarded like a pile of garbage after all that talk pre-release on how it’ll change as you progress. At this point I don’t even know if it changed, I never had a reason to go back as all Origin characters were discarded as soon as I hit level 20.
I’m very disappointed with the characters in the story especially after reading all the GW2 related books.

Dungeons are a lot better than the main story line. I can feel the Jeff Grub in them.

Pets and a Lack of F2 Responsiveness

in Ranger

Really, really a BIG problem this one. Basically it comes down to some key abilities being totaly useless, because they’re just too unreliable.

Best example for this: the 2sec fear of the wolf. This would be an AMAZING pet ability, but I stopped using the wolf, because even if you are able to calculate the (horrible) animation of the howl correctly, you might still find that your wolf just ignores the F2 command and when he finally does use go through, it’s already too late. It’s almost impossible to interrupt something with the howl (a combo, a rezz, a stomp etc.).

I’m using a Wolf all the time. You statement is 100% valid, but once you get used to the pet AI you can time your F2s almost perfectly. :P Almost.

Best ranger pet?

Depends on your build. As a melee beastmaster I preffer Wolf + Cave spider. The wolf can tank has CC and Fear. The cave spider has an average cooldown Weakness that is awesome in boss fights.

@Snow Aeth, the fear is only 2 seconds, you are probably running some Condition Duration traits.

Bears are best at tanking.

Moas are best at supporting.

Drakes are best if you need AoE, generally they overshadow Canines in PvE due to their awesome AoE damage. Their tail skill also comboes with fields.

Spiders are ranged so they are good when you are focusing down a Boss.
Devourers are ranged and have better survivability than Spiders, but deal less damage and have lackluster F2. Generally Devourers are awesome if you are running DPS and PvP builds, because their AI is kinda good coupled with knock backs and retreats. They also hit 2 times per attack so their can stack Rampage as One better than any other pet.

Devourers tend to be the best over all pet choice, while other pets fit into different roles. Canines are the melee and a more offensive brother family of the devourer, when it comes to utility in their kits.

Melee Ranger?

I run a 30 beastmastery tanky build and my pet rarely dies in PvE and can tank lower tier bosses in Dungeons.

I posted this elsewhere I’ll paste it here…

Close-combat Ranger

Weapon Set 1 : Sword/Axe
Weapon Set 2 : Axe/Warhorn

Preferred pets : Wolf/Cave Spider

Traits : 0/5/20/15/30
PvE Skills : Troll Unguent, Sic’ Em (optional), Quickening of Zephyr (optional), Signet of Renewal, Rampage as One
Dungeon Skills : Healing Spring, 2x Spirits, Search and Rescue, Spirit of Nature

Armor and Accessories : Cleric’s and 6/6 Superior Runes of Lyssa
Weapons : Knight’s

My build is rather tanky and my dps unbuffed is rather low, but I’ve seen my Wolf crit for 3500 on a level 80 group event boss with 25 stacks of Might on it and 12x Vulnerability on the Boss, which is kinda funny.

This build revolves around supporting and buffing my pet while being somewhat tanky. I rarely take more than 700 damage from levle 80 mobs and common group event bosses rarely hit me for more than 1800, which is good enough when I have 15k hp. I deal consistent but average damage.

I’m having mighty fun with Fortifying Bound, as it is AWESOME with might stacking from Rampage as One and Protection one dodge roll. Whirling Defense and Hunter’s Call are awesome for stacking Might, because every hit counts towards Rampage as One, so it takes ~3 seconds for my pet to reach and maintain 25 Might. you want to know how this trait works go to the GW2 wiki I’ve updated this trait page and have even added a table with condition durations.

I take Wolf and Cave Spider along with the Trait that makes their F2 Cripple.

I love the Wolf, it’s F2 is the best disengage ever and is awesome in dungeons. 30 points in Beastmastery make it hit like a truck even if slow. I like the Fear + Cripple rather than only Fear, because it gives you more control and makes chasing mobs less annoying.

The Cave Spider is ranged which is very good for event boss battles. I take Cave spider over any other spider because it has a very short recharge on it’s F2 and inflicts weakness which makes me and my pet more tanky and coupled with Protection on Dodge and Troll Unguent is rather insane. I’m usually tanking champions in PvE and lesser bosses. Well not exactly tanking, but once me and my pet take aggro its very hard for the mob to kill me with so much toughness and protection. Rune of Lyssa is awesome here, getting random boons on heal is a no brainer when you already have so many boons in your kit. Fortifying Bound makes this even better, as it transfers the buffs to your pet.

I am stacking about 1200 healing power which most people think is a waste but I really like as when you DPS is low, but you are tanky it more than makes up for itself in the long run.
I’m taking Troll Unguent for the same reason, as it has 25% longer cooldown than Heal as One, but heals roughly 33% more and when you are tanky that snowballs really well.

I know my build isn’t really good, but I find it really fun to play and this build is one reason I’ve bought and play GW2.

My English might be bad, but hey we are not all that perfect.

Cheers and have fun, gotta’ tame em all !

Ranger Downed Skills Mostly Useless

in Ranger

Posted by: Wayfinder.8452

Wayfinder.8452

I rarely die when downed. Running a Beastmaster build and my pet can tank so much damage that I can outheal most damage from mobs and bosses with 3 and 4. I was standing near the Claw of Jormag taking the 400 damage dot and I still go up. 4 is so good it’s insane, if you are running a DPS build it’s only normal for your pet to die. Also as someone stated you can control your pet while downed and bears use their invulnerability skill while reviving. Any increase in numbers here would make 34 comboing overpowered.

1 is ok as it has bleed, yes damage is low but its OK compaired to other downed abilities go check their damage on the Wiki.

2 is HORRIBLE, I can’t stress how unresponsive this baby is. It’s the little brother of your pet’s F2. It doesn’t take 100 hits of the button to work, but by the time it executes you’ll probably be looking for the nearest Waypoint.

@Ickorus, I’m using a Wolf since level 10 and I never regreted it. I use the normal Wolf as it’s F2 is an AoE 2 second fear. I die, mobs surround me… F2, 3, 4… Rally.

I think this would be a nightmare for them to track. They already stated that names are not reserved because it would be an absurd amount of extra data to maintain: this would be even worse.

That’s very insightful fo you.

Just imagine people.. having to store every single detail for your character, then for EVERY single type of pet you have. They already don’t permanently store pet names for the same reason.

I think it would have been much more interesting if the whole pet system was changed so pets were available too all classes.

hell no

While I understand people beeing turned off by pet AI, a perma stove will only accomplish the opposite effect. IF I could stove my pet for a damage boost I would do it permanently and never use the pet again for fighting – because in my oppinion pets will always have a subpar and inferiour AI / effect on your gameplay. Despite all that i chose ranger because i like pets (as having visual and gameplay influence).

Use the tools you have instead of making up new ones.

Problem is… people are lazy and 99% play DPS glass cannons.

This is the 121th thread in the last month about this. I love the drama !

I play as a Beastmaster, but I totally agree that you should be able to perma stow your pet. That mechanic was in GW1 and it should be implemented here, given that players without pets will not gain any buffs while the pet is stowed, unless you guys want the ranger to be nerfed even more.

Everyone should be allowed their share of fun this game is all about that and I’m sure this will me implemented given the explosive amount of threads.

Have fun guys !

Bind your keys better and micro manage it. I have my pet commands at Q E and R instead of Fs and it works wonderful.

I like how my pet runs infront of me, it helps me a lot in PvE as my Wolf does the tanking mostly. I do agree that this is very troublesome in dungeons, but not so much as you are able to control it. The AI needs polishing but it’s not that bad.

@Wayfinder, while in itself your arguement seems viable, i think that for the sword as a whole and in combination with the knive, and by also looking at utility options, the argument is realy weak… not just because i could reverse the arguement by stating: Having pounce on 1 is a waste, it is a jump move that should be player controlled for maximum effectiveness…

Your arguement is further weakened by already having a dodge move available on the sword that is player controlled, in the form of ‘Hornet Sting’. Then when combining the sword with the knife, you get another player controlled dodge move with ‘Stalker Strike’. Then when looking further on the utility side of the ranger, you get another dodge move with ‘lightning reflexes’, which also gives an endurance ‘buff’ that gives you more player controlled regular dodges…

Yet, there is NOT ONE readely available player controlled LEAP, on any 2 handed setup. True there are leaps, but pounce is on a sequence that triggered this skill while already in melee range… Monarch Leap is only available if Hornet Sting is used first…

So trading in one dodge, of the many available, to get a leap that isn’t currently readily available seems to be a much stronger arguement, and it’s not that you actually loose Serpent Strike as a skill, you will still be able to benefit from swirling around your foe, only now in a more regular fashion giving the sword back it’s mobile fighting style feel (and having less chance jumping off a cliff if it is not your intention to do so)

I cannot force myself to respect your posts anymore.

You are simply dismantleling any point of view different than yours.

If the problem is Pounce, then better remove it. 1 more player controlled dodge is much more valuable to a melee Ranger than 1 leap skill. Rangers aren’t true tanks by nature, they are a jack of all trades master of none.

Srsly I’m going to disregard any further posts made by you, looking at your post history. I’m sorry but I cannot respect your your way of thinking as it represents quite big of an ego.

Have fun !

I quite like the one handed skill. You have the ability to leap through many enemies in quick succession killing them all like a thief should if you practice it well enough.. you can even use it to dodge past a bunch of mobs. It looks fun, it is a great mechanic.

There is only one problem I have with it.

They need to make sure it never activates in such a manner that you fly off a cliff while the mob dies, plunging to your death.

It happens, alot. Alot.

I can’t agree more with you, I died quite a few times too.
