And the tool is written in undocumented Haskell, ofc.

The tool is called Autodesk Maya. Also Zbrush and/or Mudbox. Maybe 3DS Max, although it’s confirmed they primarily use Maya for animation.

You missed out on 4 episodes of the living world (episode 5 comes out in 2 days). That’s about it I think.

Getting into fractals just get your AR up and go kill things. It’s not that hard really and they seem to shower you in rewards now (I got a weapon chest last night, first time stepping into fractals in a few months).

Raids – it all depends who you ask. I’ve heard a lot of horror stories of elitists demanding 930483098 legendary insights and full ascended gear and ping your legendaries and DPS meters all that. I’ve also heard you can just pug it as long as you have exotics or better and know how to play your class.

I haven’t really tried to get into raiding yet, but I’ve heard of guilds clearing raids naked… so the gear requirements can’t be that intense. It’s probably more a matter of learning the fights and “git gud”. My advice: try to get as much ascended as you can afford, and watch some youtube videos to familiarize yourself with the bosses. If you do a lot of fractals, the gear should be no problem.

I don’t see the problem including asian themed stuff in this game. There’s already plenty of things like you said.

  • Factions was entirely asian themed.
  • There’s Ancestral and Imperial outfits.
  • Belinda’s greatsword
  • Fan focus
  • Mystical dragon minipet
  • The whole Bazaar of the Four Winds content in season 1
  • Most of the Tengu in GW2 have asian accents and clothing
  • Marjory Delaqua

Besides that, this school uniform design is not even particularly asian. Especially the male version. So this argument is wrong on multiple levels.

Why do people care about how they make something as long as it looks good?

Because how something is made has a lot to do with whether it looks good. A lot of people in this thread have been discussing the method of making armor, but few (if any) actually know what they are talking about, which is why I spoke up.

Do you drive a car? Does the car work? What happens when the car breaks down? You probably care enough about the car to get it fixed don’t you? So you either fix it yourself (requiring you to know how it works) or you get someone else to fix it (and you better care if they know how cars work, or you’re wasting your money).

So reasons NOT to add it to the game:

1. I don’t like it so no one can have it!

Really…?

2. It’s too asian!

Europe and America have had this uniform too…

3. It’s perverted! Fetish! Child sexualization!

Seriously? Is this Massachusetts in the 1600s? If the skirt was longer would that make it okay? Why the hyperbole? Honestly this outfit isn’t even remotely as revealing as stuff that is already in the game. I think you are overreacting.

if it’s because it’s easier to reuse existing armor and make changes to them, there is the glorious chest piece that is short and tight, why not base more on that one????

You know whats funny about that chest piece? It’s the naked body geometry reskinned.

They took the geo for the naked body and replaced the texture on it. The reason it looks like it has “modelled” armor is because an artist took that geometry into a program called Zbrush and sculpted a very nice detailed model of it (millions of polygons). Then they transfer what is called a “normal map” from that high-poly mesh back onto the original naked body geometry (which only has a few thousand polygons). It creates the illusion of detail without actually having it modelled in the game engine.

A lot of gamers scoff at reskins, but it’s important to remember that nowadays a reskin actually does take effort to make because of that Zbrush process I mentioned. Look up “Zbrush speed sculpt” and you will see a lot of time-lapse of what I mean.

snip

The reason a lot of armors look similar is because they have to be modelled to fit the standardized skeleton. If it doesn’t fit the skeleton, they have to build a new skeleton (which is called Rigging and it’s hella complicated…). In fact that’s one of the reasons this legendary armor took so long and was so hard to make. They probably had to rig a special skeleton just to animate this armor.

It’s also easy to take an existing armor and just replace the texture because texture files are separate from the geometry and can easily be swapped. That’s why old mmos have TONS of reskins. However this is not accomplished by “transparency maps”. Any transparency map would leave holes in the geometry that would look like swiss cheese. You would see through yourself because game engines don’t render backface polygons (the inside of your skin).

they could at least put some real effort in it

That’s a little unfair. Like I said they had to build whole new tech to make this armor even work. I daresay it took a lot of real effort.

… listen to fans… make something else rather than a freaking coat.

Now this I absolutely agree with. They should have thought about the trench coat problem from the very beginning in the paper/pencil design phase. They should have taken a poll or done some serious research before they even started rigging/modelling.

It seems to me like Anet must have decided trench coats are some kind of iconic thing that exemplifies medium armor classes in this franchise. It would be like designing Master Chiefs armor for the next Halo game. It has to look a certain way (in their minds). The trench coat thing must be like some kind of class identity design philosophy. Obviously the community thinks differently.

I wish Anet would go for more variety in medium armor. Like I said they have to build it for the skeleton, but there’s no reason they HAVE to build a coat. As you can see there’s plenty of other armor in the game without a coat for light and heavy. There’s nothing stopping them from making that kind of armor under the medium weight class.

This would have been my forever choice of outfit for my character forever if this was released but sadly looks like it will never arrive.

I have actually poked a couple people I know with connections to Anet. They said they would mention it to the devs. That and this thread has been on the front page for a few days now. It’s possible Anet is aware that at least… 4 or 5 people in this thread want the outfit? So you never know!

I used to be skeptical that Fromsoft would never add the red plume to Ornstein’s armor in Dark Souls 3, but someone started a petition and Fromsoft obliged in spite of my skepticism. I dunno if Anet will be cool like Fromsoft, but I want to try.

Why is Common Clothing a tonic?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Xenon.4537

I would really like to see it turned into a proper outfit that everyone can access. Yes, that would mean that you could wear it in combat, but who cares? I use it all the time on the RP server, and I’m sick of having to buy a tonic every time I want to wear it.

It’s also my understanding that the resource for the tonics is dwindling. There’s no way to get the common clothing tonic except what’s currently on the Trading Post. Eventually there just aren’t going to be any more left. Hell, I’d even be willing to pay gems for it.

Any thoughts?

I agree with this for the same reasons I pointed out in my school uniform thread…

Also I want my Dragon Emblem Shirt to be an outfit… TBH clothing tonics were a bad move all around. They changed town clothes into tonics in the same update that added outfits and the wardrobe. It makes no sense. They should have made all town clothes into outfits.

I feel offended when I see the way female characters’ looks are objectifying women in a certain way.

That’s certainly your right. Personally I feel offended by the way some male characters are treated, and I feel offended by the limitation of expression on grounds of offense. So now what? Should we just not have anything in the game because people are offended by all kinds of different things?

By the way I just don’t agree with your “lolita” insinuation. You do realize girls over the age of 18 willingly wear plaid skirts because they like to? You realize school uniforms are actually worn… in schools? Not just in porn? I think it’s an unfair leap to jump to the conclusion that the only thing this armor skin represents is underage sex. Nevermind the fact you can’t actually make child characters in this game. You could argue Asura are “child-like” but then you might as well delete the entire race because you can unequip their armor and run around in your underpants… Keep in mind Asura players are not technically children. They are grown adults. Their race is just short with big ears and a mouth full of shark teeth.

I think the only part of your argument that has any merit is the lore aspect of fitting it into the game world, and I’m willing to give you that one.

[…]

What I’m getting at is if all of the above items are acceptable, why not the school uniform? Surely it’s not that outlandish compared to those? I mean seriously you say it’s okay for a charr wearing a quaggan hat with butterfly wings and a pink wedding dress running around fighting Zhaitan. That’s perfectly normal, but a schoolgirl is going to break your immersion? Lol.

I don’t dare spelling it out, because my reply might get deleted again as an “infraction to the forum rules”, so I will phrase it carefully: You might be aware of the fact that school girl uniforms could attract a certain clientele who is particularly interested in the “girl” part of the term? I think you catch my draft. Maybe that is why they wouldn’t want to risk it (and I agree).

Although I have to say that, as a woman, I am not happy with certain other armor skins for female characters either — if there was true equality then were are the (supposedly) sexy male armor counterparts? Or game developers could just refrain from showing that much skin? Just a thought.

What you are getting at if I infer correctly is you think the school uniform is too provocative and inappropriate, to which I simply disagree. That is your opinion and you are entitled to it. What you find sexy (or too sexy) is going to be completely different from anyone else on the planet. If Anet agrees with you that’s fine. But then why did they release the other armors you are referring to? There are far more revealing clothes in the game. That can’t be the reason Anet didn’t release it.

At the end of the day games are about having fun. No one is going to force you to wear the school uniform. If you don’t like it, don’t buy it. If wearing this outfit would increase my enjoyment of the game, why shouldn’t I? How does my appearance affect you?

I don’t think we would have gotten it even if it was released. This was most likely designed for their release on the Asian market, and, I’d wager, at the request of NCSoft in Korea.

Then I guess they didn’t find it very lore-friendly to see a bunch of females dressed up like school girls walking around to fight Zaithan and decided to never release it. Obviously this is all speculation.

I understand what you mean, but I respectfully counter with this list of cute/asian themed items they have released:

“Ok, so it looks like those weapon skins were originally created to be paired up with some of the armors for skill videos and the Beta experience. Then they apparently got lost in the mists between teams and never got hooked up, or were hooked up incorrectly so players never saw them again… Or at least until my team gets their hands on them!”

> Or at least until my team gets their hands on them

Why would he say that if they were lost? Keep in mind we can still preview those skins in-game indicating they were not actually lost at all. How can we preview skins that don’t exist?

The answer is they didn’t get deleted. The skins are right there in the game files. What he means by “lost” is Anet’s priorities shifted away from working on them.

There is nothing in that post that contradicts what I am saying… Curtis is talking about the problem of having different pieces of town clothing (chest, legs, feet) mix and match with armor and dye channels. This problem was solved with the outfit system which is why you have to wear an entire outfit and not just different pieces of it.

What I am proposing is they take the school uniform model and change it from being a [town clothes slot item] into an [outfit slot item]. To illustrate what I mean please refer to my crude diagram… Geometry and texture files exist as separate files which could be applied any which way you want. It’s a matter of pipeline connections. They don’t have to remake anything.

And yet, they have lost the files for the weapons previewed for Heart of Thorns.

These were never promised, as some claim; data-mined items aren’t things that are assured to be incorporated into the game.

I guess the Devs were confused when they told us, long ago, it was not a ‘small issue’ to change Town Clothes into Armor or even Outfits. Who knew? /shrug

Do you have any sources? How do we know they lost those weapon skins?

I know that datamined stuff is not promised to go into the game. That’s why I made a thread asking them to change their minds.

And yes I would say they must have been confused… or maybe we were confused. I’ll wager what they were referring to as “not a small issue” is the prospect of how do you actually obtain the items? Town clothes already existed in the game and people had access to them. They probably thought they would have to create a collection or quest or something which is a lot more work. All I’m asking for is put it in the gem store.

It’s important to note that Anet (like any game studio) hires a LOT of contract workers. These are artists and programmers who are hired for 4-8 months to work on one project. Most of the time when their contract is up, they leave Anet and take a contract somewhere else. This isn’t abnormal. They aren’t being fired. Their contract is simply a temporary job. Artists especially fall into this category. Anet’s actual employee count probably fluctuates a lot more than we know. It has never been precisely 300, and it wont stay at 400 for very long.

At this point, I think the biggest holdup is that it was designed for the old town clothes system. They’d have to redesign the items

A lot of people keep saying this, but I need to point out that it is not true at all.

I understand there is a small issue of changing the item from town clothes into an armor skin (or outfit) but that has NOTHING to do with redesigning anything. They don’t have to remake the polygon geometry. They don’t have to repaint any textures. Those assets are finished and exist as separate files (I know how 3D modeling works, I do it for a living). The only thing they have to do is change the item type from town clothes into something else which is practically no effort.

And to other people who keep saying the models got “lost” are you kidding? I mean maybe… but that would be the most incredibly negligent thing ever. This is a big game studio with now over 400 devs. They don’t just save files on a thumb drive and “lose” it somewhere. They have people paid and working at Anet whose ENTIRE JOB is to keep track of files, saving files, backing up files, and securing files. They have special software designed specifically for helping all of the different departments keep their files organized and backed up. If someone just magically lost an entire armor skin like that… Let’s just say in any other industry that person would be fired. I don’t think that’s the case here.

I know I’m like really overly passionate about this topic… It’s kind of been the last straw for me. First the paper bags, then the school uniform among other items… And to top it off the legendary armor they worked so hard on is not that well received… Anet’s priorities really confuse and frustrate me.

That’s been my most practical point. It’s a finished art asset (model, texture, etc) but they are just throwing it away by not putting it in the gem store. I would buy this as an outfit for 800 gems no question, and I know a lot of people I’ve asked in game the last few days agree with me.

All of you people talking about models and textures as if you know anything… sigh!

Once again, it’s the animation skeleton that is standardized here. The models are not just all copy/paste with “see-through” textures. There’s no hidden “volume”.

Some armors are re-textures. SOME. But not every single armor in the game has a magical underlying “base model”. That’s not how any of this works.

Trench coats are more material and require physics.

No, they don’t require physics. They require the illusion of physics. Every character in the game uses a standardized skeleton for animation. There’s a human version, a Charr version, asura, etc. These skeletons have a special set of joints designed to animate all trench coats. All trench coats in the game are skinned to that standard skeleton. That skeleton does not use physics as you would think. It uses a baked set of animations tailored to look correct for all poses. The animation looks like physics but it is actually manually hand made by the animator.

You can tell the difference between the trench coat animation of GW2 and that of Dark Souls 3, Bloodborne, or the Witcher 3. Those other games do use physics (simplified physics designed for a game engine). You can see the difference in behavior as in GW2 the movement is very artificial and predictable. In DS3 the coats flop around much more wildly and freely as they react to hard surfaces dynamically.

Town clothes and outfits actually are different models. Town clothes had separate pieces, chest, pants, hat, gloves, shoes. So yes, they would have to remake it even if they still have the original data.

If not, they got some ’splaining to do about the tonics that replaced a lot of our gem-bought town clothes. Most of us would have taken the skins as armor pieces rather than get a gem refund, I imagine.

As someone who is intimately familiar with 3D modeling… No they do not need to remake it. It’s a finished art asset. The only hurdle at this point is packaging it for the gem store.

Town cloth tonics were a bone-headed move. They should have been skins from the beginning, or at least outfits.

Yeah I can see what you are saying but to each their own. Personally I think the armor suffers a lot more from being really generic. It’s detailed, but it’s still just another trench coat. The detail is lost when viewed from more than 10 feet away. It doesn’t give off a distinctive silhouette (that’s a critical animation element).

I don’t hate the armor, but I can understand why others do. There are a lot of basic fundamental art design issues holding it back. I think they focused too much on the technical hurdles of making the transformation.

Its a dagger in GW2, so the way its held is the only way that makes sense. If the direction of it being held was reversed, then it would be useless as a dagger, since you would either have to raise your hands and strike down to use the blade, or contort your wrist in a strange way to make it effective.

Just because its not identical to GW1 does not make it wrong. The way its held is the only logical way to hold a dagger with a blade going like that.

That’s what I really don’t get, why GW1 had 2 more FULL games (Factions and Nightfall) with tons of new maps, contents, armors and weapons but GW2 only get little expansions with so few new stuff compared?!!! (For the same price moreover….)
People want full new games like Elona or Cantha, or even something new but NO NEW EXPANSIONS WITH FEW CONTENTS!

Something to keep in mind is the last expansion for GW1 came out in 2007 nearly a decade ago. People come and go. This isn’t the same Anet from back then. It’s the modern embodiment of Theseus’s Ship.

TL;DR the Anet that made GW1 isn’t the same Anet that made GW2. Half their devs have left the company and been replaced by new people. That’s not necessarily a bad thing. That’s just how the industry works.

Is Anet really that crippled now, compared to GW1 days? Give me one good explanation besides the “Not enough resources”. I mean, they are selling expansion for a really nice price right there, surely they can dish out AT LEAST new weapons.

The reason we think this way is because in the 4.5 years GW2 has existed, Anet has never given us evidence they are either willing or able to deliver new weapon animations to player characters. They had to re-use hammer animations for the new melee staff on thief/rev. And if you actually look at those animations they transition very poorly. The character will “snap” from one pose to another in certain situations and it looks terrible.

Anet has good animators. They seem to be focused more on animating enemy creatures, raid bosses, world bosses, etc. That’s because technically speaking there are less transitions to worry about for NPCs. Also keep in mind animation is actually very expensive relatively. It takes many hours just to animate a few seconds of motion. If I had to guess (as a freelance animator myself) Anet is just trying to save money by re-using old animations and creating as few brand new ones as possible.

I know it’s not the answer you want to hear but it really does come down to “not enough resources”. Yes they could absolutely give us new weapons fully animated, but it would take away from some other area of production, and Anet has to make a cost/benefit decision regarding that.

Really love the occultist idea, though I would change glyphs to signets. Signets are actually rings imbued with magical power which fits nicely with the whole artifact idea. Also engineers are the only class without signets right now.

You guys have a clue about it, that Occultists have to do with rituals, or ??
They aren’t about technology or anything about relics that would make rifle/pistols wielding Engineers fit for them to be the Core Class…

If any Core Class at all fits for a ritual loving, demon loving, death loving, blood loving occultist, then its the Necromancer and nothing else!

You seem to be getting hung up on the name “occultist” without considering the underlying concept. I suggest you read some HP Lovecraft if you want a better idea where I’m coming from. The concept is that there is ancient technology we don’t fully understand but the occultist studies it and attempts to use it. The ability of the technology seems like magic only because it is beyond our current comprehension.

I know you guys are entitled to your opinions, but when I read these comments I envision a bunch of oil baron monopoly-guys scoffing and struggling to keep their monocle from falling out.

“Harumph! I cannot approve of this plebeian Wooden Potatoes. What a crass, uncouth, boorish man! I certainly don’t agree with all he says, wot wot!”
