I wish this game could be balanced around competitive play; but at the moment I think that its paramount this game, have a more fun and balanced experience for casual players, as the need for a larger pvp community trumps trying to please the small existing pvp community. I think thats a reality a lot of competitive players in this game are having a hard time grasping.

If you wish to alienate the majority of the casual community, then the competitive community won’t have much to play for. The casual players are in essence the pillars on which the competitive community is built. Sadly if your saying its fine that those pillars erode away, then there won’t be much hope for a competitive community.

All I can say, is (and I know this is a lot to ask) be patient, once this game becomes more bearable for the regular casual player, then the high end fixes and balancing can come in, because its the job of the competitive community to adapt; whilst your regular player simply lacks the time to do so.

I know that this is a very mundane topic, and we could argue this back and forth, this is only how I perceive things and to each his own I suppose.

i don’t think it’s all karl’s fault. again, consider they’ve no data collection systems, and no resources from anet to get it. certainly, he seems to not know what’s going on, but lay the blame at the feet of the people responsible, and not just the only people we interact with.

I agree, it also could’ve been the fact that Karl could’ve possibly been nervous he is only human, and it could happen to anyone; I know that in my life I have had those blank out periods.
Anyways all I can say is, I was very grateful to the devs for the experience and their patients.

Yesterday I had the unfortunate experience of reading an utterly disgusting thread; where supposed members of the non-existent competitive scene attacked the one player, who I believe deserved it the least, sadly I didn’t have a chance to reply to that thread yesterday, that thread seems to be deleted now and rightfully so.

Xeph, I just wanted to say that I can’t speak for the rest of the community, but please don’t get discouraged by what those people said, because I highly doubt they share a single brain cell between the lot of them. I have not seen a single one of them make a single constructive post to keep the community going, and its sad that they can barely see the fact that the community isn’t missing more hate or whine threads; its missing people who are trying to revitalize the community and keep it going.

Reading your posts and the amount of effort that you are putting into the community, I just want to make sure that it doesn’t stop and I just wanted you to know that we appreciate it, I was there in your teamspeak when you were trying to find everyone teams and looking through the thread with them trying to match them up with other people. I can honestly say that none of those players who attacked you are capable of doing; because the difference between someone who takes action and one that sits on his kitten all day and whines, is as clear as day and night. Instead of making more hate threads Xeph has given us a way to work with what little we have and has encouraged the community to try and weather the storm.

I remember in one beta weekend where Xeph was in ts with a bunch of community members for 8 hours, helping with builds and playing tournaments.
People can claim as much as they want that I am trying to kiss his kitten but in reality I just have a lot of respect for the guy, and I just don’t understand the approach that was taken by the people who are meant to be the pros of the community, it was espically disgusting to read the posts that danto made, if you guys thought you were doing the community any favours with your posts yesterday than you are sorely mistaken.

All in all, all I just wanted to say was thank you Xeph, for all the things you’ve done I will continue to support you and the rest of team paradigm, and please don’t give up!

Rather, he knows that people have different priorities and is trying to gage where the community is at. Time is limited, he can’t just talk about the game for 16 hours.

I have been on SOTG before, so I understand the format of the show; and I am sorry to say that we don’t have the time to discuss all of the things you had linked, you need to understand we have roundabout an hour, to discuss a lot of material, so all I am doing in this thread is trying to understand what it is most of the community feel is paramount and they want to see in the show.

Xeph i think you come from wow ( or any same other mmo without pvp ), so to be honest you might don’t know exactly what is a pvp mmorpg..

I come from gw1 and if i were you, i would ask these 3 questions:

1)Ladder rankings
Ladder ranking should be automated refreshed ( not written like qp leaderboards ) and ratings should be visible.

2)Custom arena
Custom arena are a must to make gw2 e-sport which means tournament hosted by sponsors with money prize.

3)New mode game
If the 1on1 rated tournaments are the competitive pvp part with points, the pvp community need aswell a new mode like HA in guild wars 1 wich allows players to get fun/competive in different way than win/lose points in a ladder.

So my advice i feel to tell you xeph is to be inspired by gw1 for your question in SOTG.
( ofc balance is important, but balance without these 3 points worth less than zero )

Both your #1 and #2 questions should be answered in what the contents of the “March patch” are otherwise they are going to be covered in the next SOTG, because as you know Anet will not talk about it if its not ready, ergo it would be best to encompass as many topics as we can.

The only thing really keeping me in the game at the moment is my team, funny enough today the team became 1 year old, so for me I guess I am dedicated more towards my team then I am the game; but I do firmly believe that this game will get better.

Fact is I don’t care that there is no mmr, custom games, spectator mode etc, I understand that those things will come later, because hey those are big changes that require a lot of time and Arenanet has already confirmed that these things are coming.
I worry when balance becomes a joke, because that is the fundementals of the game; and if Arenanet fails at doing that, then they have failed at the most basic aspects of making a game successful.

This thread is so confusing. Are you genuinely trying to be constructive or is it just some kind of rant mixed with some e-lobbying?

Because I somewhat fail to see how your friend list or google analytics can teach the devs anything they don’t know already with the tons of metrics at their disposal?

Or maybe you think that stating the obvious is actually relevant? We all know what it takes to make a successful pvp (any pvp really):
- polish the gameplay
- make a smooth learning curve
- provide the indispensable tools for a competitive environment – solo and team ladder, matchmaking, obs mode, private servers…
- mass market pvp with full advertising and e-sport partnerships.

No. The real trick is to implement the above in a way that makes sense within the gw2 ecosystem and that fully integrates with all the other systems in the game.

For whatever reason it’s taking arena net months if not years to figure out how to achieve it.

So as a player, there really isn’t much you can do except, wait for it… play the game, enjoy it and push the mechanics to their limits if you’re gifted enough to be a top tier player.

And when all hope is gone or when you’re fed up with the wait, just leave and let gw2 be a case study on how to fail a pvp sequel:p

I thought that it would be a good idea for people that are looking for a team and teams looking for a player, to have a thread that they can post in, instead of all individually starting their own threads and those getting lost in the sea of other assorted threads.
All I am asking is that posters stick to the following format.

The reason I am doing this, is that I get a lot of forum / ingame mail, of players looking for a team; I have tried to assist those players as much as possible and have had few success stories, mainly due to the fact that a lot of the previous mail is lost and that I have so little information from those players initially that its difficult to match people up.

Hopefully if this succeeds then I can look to expand upon this, maybe even increasing the TP team speak, so that they can log on there and play with other like minded players in turn easing the process of finding a team.

I hope that people keep it civil in here, and best of luck; i’ll personally try and match people up in this thread and keep a list of teams that are looking for an extra player.

Firstly, I would like to thank Elona reach for all the fun we had in WvW in the past couple of hours, its been awhile since I have enjoyed guild wars to this extent.

I just wanted to link a video with a fight we had with the elona zerg. The video is from an engineers PoV, there is some profanity in the video, so if that offends you in anyway I would suggest not watching, please also take into account that we are an spvp guild and only WvW for fun, so we probably didn’t see opportunities a more seasoned WvW might’ve seen.

That’s a pretty big generalization with no real data. I’m personally pretty happy with the game and have certainly not lost faith. I really want solo-queue, but it doesn’t mean I’ve lost faith nor do I think they are lying. The dev interaction is something that is an extremely positive thing, and we’ve been turning into something extremely negative. It’s fine to discuss opinions obviously, but the negative tone is only something that serves to discourage them from communicating at all.

I personally cannot say that I know more about managing a game and community better then Arena net, all I can do is trust them and hopefully show them that they have the communities backing in what they do.
Once I do try it out though and if I find that it doesn’t work than I will express my dissatisfaction, and I am sure if I have something to base it off then my argument to them will sound more convincing then basing it off of assumptions and previous games with different populations and a different monitory format.

After thinking about all of this I can just agree with Xeph.

The mixed queue is probably the best thing they can implement right now.
Especially, because they are probably already working on it and won’t be able to just scrap it completely.
I just hope that we’ll get something like that sooner than later and if the mixed queue is easier to implement it’s probably the right choice.

The mixed system will still be way better than what we have right now and I’d be happy with it.
Queueing against a full team every now and then might be frustrating, but it’s something that I’m willing to take for having a soloqueue.
Players at a medium rating won’t get matched up against full teams very often, hopefully.
And the high rated players might meet full teams more often, but I personally would be fine with that, as long as the community is happy with it and grows.

Later on we will probably still get our soloqueue, if the interest for it is high enough.

I have faith in Arenanet.
The game is moving into the right direction right now with Paid 1vs1 queue anyway.

They never said this is a temporary solution, nor do they have separate queues in plan as afaik. Also, getting matched into unfair matches is unacceptable, i want my rank to be a reflection of my worth as a player, not reflection of a faulty matchmaking system. In League it was possible to get matched against 2 duo-queues for the longest time, which was rather unfair, too. But people still played it and liked it.

We had our fair share of unfair matches already with free tourneys, dont want more tyvm, and who says it is every 10th match? You did not test the system you dont know that.

That is a two way street my friend, you haven’t tested the system so you don’t know either, and none of us will know until Arena Net implements it; and guess what you don’t pay any subs so why not take a break until then and see if the system works for you or not.
I am sure Arena net has the best interest of the game at heart, stop assuming that they are trying to screw you on purpose.

I havent tested a system but i know for certain that possibility of getting unfair matches is there and for me it is unacceptable. I dont pay sub, but i did buy the game i expect quality i should not be forced to settle for mediocre. Ill take a break when Neverwinter and Teso come out, possibly permanent one if things dont improve here. They dont have my best interest in mind, but yours. They use “top teams” to farm new players so that they can increase ticket sale, that is why you are put on a “you guys know the game” pedestal, and that is why progress in pvp is so slow. Keep the status quo as long as possible.

In League it was possible to get matched against 2 duo-queues for the longest time, which was rather unfair, too. But people still played it and liked it.

We had our fair share of unfair matches already with free tourneys, dont want more tyvm, and who says it is every 10th match? You did not test the system you dont know that.

That is a two way street my friend, you haven’t tested the system so you don’t know either, and none of us will know until Arena Net implements it; and guess what you don’t pay any subs so why not take a break until then and see if the system works for you or not.
I am sure Arena net has the best interest of the game at heart, stop assuming that they are trying to screw you on purpose.

After thinking about all of this I can just agree with Xeph.

The mixed queue is probably the best thing they can implement right now.
Especially, because they are probably already working on it and won’t be able to just scrap it completely.
I just hope that we’ll get something like that sooner than later and if the mixed queue is easier to implement it’s probably the right choice.

The mixed system will still be way better than what we have right now and I’d be happy with it.
Queueing against a full team every now and then might be frustrating, but it’s something that I’m willing to take for having a soloqueue.
Players at a medium rating won’t get matched up against full teams very often, hopefully.
And the high rated players might meet full teams more often, but I personally would be fine with that, as long as the community is happy with it and grows.

Later on we will probably still get our soloqueue, if the interest for it is high enough.

I have faith in Arenanet.
The game is moving into the right direction right now with Paid 1vs1 queue anyway.

They never said this is a temporary solution, nor do they have separate queues in plan as afaik. Also, getting matched into unfair matches is unacceptable, i want my rank to be a reflection of my worth as a player, not reflection of a faulty matchmaking system. And another thing, make up your mind already saying one thing 6 hours ago then something completely else 6 hours later makes you look childish and inconsistent, we will achieve nothing with fickle minded players like you.

Please point me to where they said that it was permanent, because I recall they did say that they will change it if the community doesn’t like it.

They already split playerbase into 3 segments and have fourth in plan ( custom arenas) now suddenly they think splitting playerbase is a bad idea? LoL.

They are trying to merge them together with this new que system, if you had failed to notice that.

Hey, I know a lot of people have been opposed to the system Arena net mentioned on the latest Sotg, and I personally was one of them; but after sleeping on it and thinking it over, I personally don’t think that it is such a bad idea.
I understand I am going to get a lot of hate over this, but I sort of agree with Arena nets approach in this situation, the population of the game isn’t large enough to split the community into several que’s and we haven’t really had a chance to see this system in action. I am sure Arena net has access to a lot of hidden information and statistics that are not available to the general public, I also believe that they probably used this information to formulate the idea of merging the que’s but largely minimizing the chance of a solo que player to meet a team; because it will cater to the rather small but faithful pvp community, besides I am sure that Arena net want the game to succeed as much as we do.

I honestly believe that this system won’t be as bad as the community thinks its going to be, and that if the system fails then I’m sure that Arena net will make a swift intervention and set things straight.

All in all, I just want to implore the community to cut Arena net some slack, I am sure that the developers are doing everything in their power to get this game rolling and make the pvp experience more enjoyable for everyone.
I am just happy that we have developers who are willing to talk to the community on live events and even at times watch our streams and chat with us on twitch.

I have a lot of faith in Arena net and I will continue to do so, because at the end of the day I have a lot of fun playing this game, albeit I do sometimes get angry a frustrated with it, but I think the good out weighs the bad, therefore Arena net are surely doing something right.

In the end all I want to say is thank you to the developers for sharing all this information with us and I look forward to see how it unfolds.

1. We havent had a chance to test it because for some elusive reason we dont have a PTR, whos fault is that a-net or players?
2. If there is possibility that you can get matched into unfair matches then this system is no better than what is in place now.
3. If you still need tickets to be competitive then this new system is no better than what is in place now.
People asked for ladder and matchmaking, they decided to just pile up everyone in the same place no matter what kind of player you are, then say trust us this gonna work out great.I think i heard that before, and i dont trust them at all anymore. How you know this is gonna work if you dont have a PTR to test it?

1. There probably is PTR and I’m pretty sure Arena net has people testing out things before they push them out, just because you’re not in it, doesn’t mean it doesn’t exist.

2. The chance of a solo player will be largely minimized, while keeping the population together.

3. That is still be disputed.

I agree, I am sure Arena net have plans to advance the system further, once we have a population that would allow to do so, but until then I don’t see an error with this system, because let’s be fair there aren’t that many people playing pvp.
