What has changed over the last few months?

ZombiesTT.3619

I stopped playing a few months ago, along with my friends. The game has remained unpatched for all that time and it will take me quite a while to update. However, I was wondering if it is worth it.

I know ANet was releasing a lot of steady updates in terms of the living story. However, I found those updates to be boring for the most part. I didn’t feel like the game was improving – it just gave you something to do, temporarily.

Are there any significant changes now? I hated fractals so I hope there isn’t too much emphasis there. How is spvp and wvwvw? Any endgame content? Are the world maps still empty? Is legendary grinding still slow and dull? Feel free to answer any of these, as well as any other unasked questions.

Thief Range

There is no denying that wvw is all about range due to the large scale battles. Having only 900 range is a huge handicap.

First of all balances aren’t JUST made for WvW, they’re made for all forms of the game. You’re obviously centered on WvW and think about that, but Anet is thinking about the entire game, including SPvP, where that condition can have some interesting consequences.

Now it probably won’t do much for thieves, and maybe not much for mesmers either, but I can guarantee you some necros will be using it. Because necros are one of the professions people were complaining about.

And necros are quite happy with this patch.

Again, from a WvW point of view, staff necros are really awesome, but in PvE, necros had very few builds that actually worked. The idea was to create more build variety.

The same with mesmers, some of whom DO use condition builds, but didn’t have enough variety.

Just because you don’t see a reason for something, or it doesn’t particularly help WvW doesn’t mean that no reason exists for it.

I play spvp more than wvw so I can see both sides. A shortbow nerf may not affect me in spvp but it does in wvw where range in absolutely essential.

Just because people complain about a class doesn’t mean that it needs fixing. Necros are insanely powerful if played right and by buffing them, Anet is doing exactly what they fear – implementing power creep.

I’m curious to hear how a balance patch which fixes traitlines somehow funds their cash shop.

TIL resetting trait points costs gems.

All of these big content patches are ways of adding new things to the cash shop – backpacks, skins etc.

I don’t understand you. How is constant adjustment to make the professions as balanced as possible bad? That’s good, VERY good.

I was avoiding comparisons, but this is the best way to explain. There is a game called StarCraft 2 which is an actual, well respected e-sport. On release of the game, people complained about how OP terrans were and demanded nerfs. Blizzard (the developer) was not so quick to be pushed around by the community. Instead of giving in to pressure, they left the game mostly unchanged until players learned to how counter certain builds etc.

There is always the potential to become better and only when all other options are exhausted should patches be made.

@ OP:
You are right, they should stop trying to make money through the cash shop…it’s not like they live off their work on this game or something.

If they wanted to have a f2p game, then the client should be free. GW operates on game and expansion sales, and should not depend on a cash shop. Unfortunately too many people are easy prey.

I think ArenaNet might be quickest dev I have seen when it comes to patches. This can be a good thing when bugs are quickly fixed and new features are added. However, a lot of problems can also result.

I was wondering, why did they implement torment? There are so many conditions already (maybe too many), some of which aren’t very useful, yet they find the need to come up with a new one? ANet needs to know that when you roll out something that isn’t well planned out, you can’t go back; you can’t just remove this condition now.

Another thing is that they are far too quick to react to is ‘balance’ changes. Thieves have been nerfed in every major balance patch and now they have no 1200 range skill. Now that they are handicapped in WvWvW, ANet will have to patch in some other changes to balance it… again. Warriors never get better, eles get buffed etc.

My advice is to stop and think it through. Make changes that are actually useful, like a party finder, instead of ways to make money in your cash shop.

I’m surprised there are no topics here about the recent nerf of thief range. Thieves now have no 1200 range skill, making them the shortest range class in the game. I don’t know how many of you play WvW but this severely handicaps the thief in this mode.

I am almost exclusively a pvp player but I’ve gotten a little bit more into pve again because of wvwvw. I could use a few ascended items and I have a few laurels but apparently I need ectos too.

So where can I farm items for ectos or gold to buy the ectos? I used to grind in Orr but when I went yesterday it was totally abandoned. I don’t like dungeons, so that’s out.

What do people do now? If I can make a decent amount of gold, I’ll probably go for a legendary too.

Necros can dodge roll during any part of this combo and the thief will run out of initiative, or use death shroud, or one of the many damage mitigation skills/ traits (spectral armor), or heal, or run, or cast an aoe well/mark on the ground.

>You are forced to buy gems with real money

By doing it this way, ArenaNet avoided a mob of players calling the game pay 2 win since you had to option of buying gems with gold. Now, because of inflation, the average player can’t really purchase enough gems to do anything with.

...retired my guardian.. rolled a thief

in Guardian

Posted by: ZombiesTT.3619

ZombiesTT.3619

I actually did the opposite – I switched from my lvl 80 Thief to a Guardian. I can say that in pve, Guards are more fun because I have to use all the weapon skills on 2 weapons while with Thief I use 1 or 2 skills on 1 weapon set.

The root of the problem

in Thief

Posted by: ZombiesTT.3619

ZombiesTT.3619

The initiative system is not the problem, peroid, end of story.

People spam 1 or 2 abilities because they are the only abilities worth using, at all, most of the time. If you want damage, you spam the damage ability, and we all have to do damage.

The REAL problem is that there’s not enough utility or damage on our other weapon skills to make them attractive. I’d press a lot more buttons if they had better uses functionality, but they don’t.

Take the ranged interrupt, for instance. Sure, it interrupts a spell, but it only locks out spell casting for 1/4 of a second, and it hits like a spit wad. It costs so much initiative to use, that it’s not worth it. I’d rather eat what ever spell is coming, and just blast somebody.

See the problem there? The gains aren’t worth the initiative cost 90% of the time. So, we spam the damage skills, and nothing else.

Initiative is fine. Weapon design is flawed.

Every class has ‘better’ and ‘useless’ weapon skills. For example, if my Greatsword Guardian had Initiative, I would spam 2 and only use 3 occasionally to close the distance.

The root of the problem

in Thief

Posted by: ZombiesTT.3619

ZombiesTT.3619

I can see that a lot of replies are from Thief players who think they know their class better than they actually do. I’m not even going to go into details as to how c&d can be exploited since I don’t want a bunch of bandwagonists making pvp even less tolerable. A ‘good’ c&d thief will decimate even the tankiest bunker guardian.

Heartseeker is still very much viable by the way. Obviously you don’t spam it when someone is at full health but once they are at 50% it’s pretty easy to take them down with a simple spam, using the right traits and build.

The root of the problem

in Thief

Posted by: ZombiesTT.3619

ZombiesTT.3619

I don’t think the regen matters that much because as long as it is there and skills aren’t on cd people will spam. Powerful skills like cloak and dagger will always be a problem without a cooldown.

Why PvP system is hurting and unfair to players.

in PvP

Posted by: ZombiesTT.3619

ZombiesTT.3619

I agree 100%, everything in the game seems to be setup to defeat any form of skill from pro solo pvper’s. Even if you could kill 2-3 players by yourself you’d never get rewarded for it because you’d never be able to stomp them with the way downed state is setup.

If you can down 3 players but not stomp them then you’re doing something wrong.

Please stop trolling, there is alot of content here you could reply to don’t derail the topic by saying everything is fine and we all just need to L2P. People are here to try and improve the spvp exp if your ok with it then I don’t see why your even on the forums at all.

The topic was about duels, and rewarding skill for solo pvp, alot of players don’t like it when you rewards broken skilless mechanics. Not every player will enjoy exploiting broken mechanics some players who are great with them, don’t enjoy winning through cheating. Now if you would like to comment on anything the OP said we’d love to hear it but I believe that there has been 3 billion players on mmo forums that posted l2play already.

Are you telling me to keep on topic when you, yourself are off topic?

As far as the topic goes, I don’t see the problem. You are rewarded in pvp by winning and getting points. You are even rewarded for losing by still getting points. You can use those points to change your appearance. Your pvp level can be used for bragging purposes. What more is there to be had?

Tournaments are optional. If you can’t find a team or compete then that is your fault, not the game’s. Competitive players commit a lot of time and effort into being the best.

The root of the problem

in Thief

Posted by: ZombiesTT.3619

ZombiesTT.3619

My first and main character is a level 80 thief. I’ve been playing since the beta weekend events and once I attained 100% map completion, I started pvping with some classes.

Sometimes people don’t see their own flaws and problems because they see through their own eyes. From the point of view of others, a lot is revealed about yourself. This applies to the thief class. Most players will blindly defend their class simply because they don’t want to get any weaker – it’s only natural.

However after a fair amount of spvp matches, it’s clear that the thief class just isn’t right. Of course, there are other unbalanced classes but here I’ll focus on the thief (a badly named class in my opinion, but that’s another matter), since I have considerable playing as one as well as facing thieves in combat.

From my analysis, it appears that the major flaw in the class (ie. the root of the problem) is with the Initiative system. I’ve spent countless (not really) hours spamming 1 or 2 weapon skills in both pve and pvp.

My character used dual pistols most of his life, spamming unload and basic attacks whenever initiative ran out. Dual dagger thieves spam heartseeker or death blossom, sword/ pistol users spam pistol whip etc.

As long as there is no cooldown on the skills, players will use the best skill repeatedly. That creates a problem with certain skills in particular:

Heartseeker: the most commonly spammed skill. It has a low initiative cost, tracks the enemy and does high damage.

Cloak & Dagger: this is much worse than heartseeker although not that many thieves use it (yet). Players can stay cloaked indefinitely, making them near unbeatable in a 1v1 confrontation.

So how do you fix this problem? One solution is to nerf the skills. However, this will probably cause players to shift to another skill/ weapon set.

The more long term solution requires a complete revamp of the Thief class. The initiative system needs to be removed and traits adjusted. While they’re at it, they should rename the class since I don’t think ‘Thief’ is an appropriate name.

I don’t actually expect them to make such a drastic change but that’s the only solution I can think of.

PS. I don’t think backstab is as big of a problem as people make it out to be. It requires the use of multiple skills as well as proper positioning and timing to be effective.
