I also took a long break and just came back recently. I stopped playing somewhere around October and just got back into GW2 at the beginning of this month.
Despite everyone’s whining, I’m very happy with most of what they’ve done so far. There will always be nerfs and buffs, and people will always complain no matter what ANet does, but overall I think they’re doing a good job keeping the game fun and interesting.
I suggest you take a look at the patch notes and familiarize yourself with new things like the living world events, guild events, the currency (Laurels I believe?) and the WvW changes.
I tend to do a little bit of everything, and find pretty much every aspect of the game fun right now.
Enjoy, and welcome back!

Have you ever considered using an Xbox controller? I’m a programmer as well so this was an issue for me. I was pretty against a controller but after trying it I liked it a lot.
Just my 2 cents.

Thanks for the inspiration Tomkatt! I used yours as a base and made a few modifications, so I figured I’d share here.
The problems I was having were:
- Set shifts on the left felt unnatural, so I moved them to RB and RT
- I was having a lot of trouble with ground targeting (cast spell, Move mouse, cast again), so I changed the cursor set a bit turned on smart casting.
- Along the same lines, I found that while in cursor mode for targeting I would accidentally push the spell again before letting go, which would cancel the spell
- I added the hold vs tap functionality to reduce number of binds needed
Anyway, here’s my layout if anyone is interested, I love it!

Tarnished Coast [Crit]
Hey guys,
I’ve been tweaking and perfecting my XBox controller config for the past week or so, and I finally got a set up that works perfectly for everything I need. So I figured I’d share it here in case someone was looking for an easy to use setup.
This is the only way I play now, and I only use the keyboard for chat. I even use the controller for inventory management, etc (it’s a tad slower this way but I prefer it).
Also keep in mind that I have smart casting on for ground targeted spells (I’ll explain how that works in a bit). Also, all options labeled “hold” happen when I hold the button for longer than .25 seconds.
So without further ado, here’s the layout:
Normal Mode:
A: Jump
X: Skill 1 (tap), Skill 7 (hold)
Y: Skill 2 (tap), Skill 8 (hold)
B: Skill 3 (tap), Skill 9 (hold)
LB: Skill 4 (tap), Heal (hold)
LT: Skill 5 (tap), Elite Skill (hold)
RB: Shift to Set 2
RT: Shift to Set 3
Left Stick: Movement
Left Stick Click: Weapon Swap
Right Stick: Move Camera
Right Stick Click: Dodge
Start: ESC
Back/Select: Map (tap), Inventory (hold)
DPad Up: Profession Skill 1
DPad Right: Profession Skill 2
DPad Down: Profession Skill 3
DPad Left: Profession Skill 4
Set 2 – Everything same as Normal Mode except below:
A: Interact
Right Stick Up: Nearest Target
Right Stick Right: Next Target
Right Stick Left: Next Target
DPad Up: Auto Run
DPad Right: Sheathe Weapons
DPad Down: Nothing yet (suggestions? I’m thinking maybe take target but I never use it)
DPad Left: Toggle Walk/Run
Set 3 – Everything same as Normal Mode except below:
Right Stick: Mouse Controll
LB: Left Click
LT: About Face
Right Stick Click: Right Click
DPad Up: Hero Panel
DPad Left: WvWvW
DPad Down: Trading Post
DPad Right: Guild
Ground targeting spells work like this:
- Hold down RT and move the mouse where you want the spell to be cast
- Push the button to cast the spell
Obviously you don’t get the AoE marker this way, but after a few tries I figured out how the spells worked pretty easily. I find it very quick and easy this way. I suppose it can never be as fast as using a mouse, but I enjoy the game a million times more when I play with the controller, so I think it’s more than worth it. And having used it for a week now I can tell you that I find the difference to be very minor.
I’ve used this setup for mostly PvE and WvW so far. I plan on giving it a try in sPvP, but I haven’t gotten around to it yet (having too much fun doing everything else).
If you’re interested let me know and I’ll send you the Xpadder profile. I’m also happy to hear any suggestions you have to improve it!
I’d love to hear how other people are using controllers to play this game. I love it, but I don’t see that many people doing it. Give it a try, you might enjoy it!
