Trehearne. Marshall of the Pact.
The first of the twelve Firstborn.
Wielder of the mighty sword Caladbolg.

Hang on. I remember it was my mission to find that sword. Then I had to fight in a pit to get it back. Then Trehearne came along and said, “I’ll hang on to that. You won’t need it.” swipe

You can remember Trehearne fondly if you like, but don’t praise him for carrying a particular sword, especially one he pinched.

Well, nope. You returned Caladbolg to the Pale Tree who then gave it to Trahearne. Not really his doing, is it. Or do you mean to say that he spent nights and days whining to the Pale Tree “oh, mommy, I want that big shiny sword, pleasepleaseplease”?

How do you know he didn’t….?

True, I don’t.

To your other post:
Where does he get “credit for carrying the sword”? He just gets the greatsword, no special credit connected to it. (Might be wrong, though, so please explain.)
And seriously, is there anything really good about Caladbolg apart from it being shiny? You do remember the mission when you fight the risen with Caladbolg, right? The weapon sucks… And the two guys who carried it ended up pretty miserably.

Well, tbh, any member of destiny’s edge could have fulfilled that role as pact leader. We didnt have to make trehearne the leader just cuz of his knowledge of Orr. (I have a great knowledge of computers that has made me invaluable to several companies, but i am not in charge of those companies…) He could have fulfilled that role as an advisor. As mentioned above, we have done all of trehearnes heavy lifting to make him great. He needed to make more of an effort to fulfuill his wyld hunt, not rely on us to do it for him.

last but not least, i am tired of sylvari prominently featuring in my story. I wouldnt like it if it was constantly asura, norn, or charr or human either. There is enuff room to go around, lets spread things out shall we?

They probably could, but IIRC none of them were around when the Pact was being formed. Because they were still in the middle of solving their own emo-problems. Hm, maybe some of them wouldn’t have made such a great leader either. They weren’t able to keep their own small guild together. Over ONE screw-up.

I didn’t say Trahearne was chosen because of his knowledge, only that it might have made the order-leaders look less stupid for not being able to agree on another person.

Your idea of him being an advisor is a fine one. I believe even Trahearne would have been glad to take that position instead. Actually, try to imagine that you come to one of those companies you work for and they’re like “hey, man, our GD died and we’re not able to choose a new one, so you get to do the job for us (and nope, we don’t care you’ve probably no experience in that field)”.

T’s wyld hunt. That’s probably the most Frodo-Sam thing about him and you. He’s the one who has to do the cleansing. You’re the one who has to get him to do it. I don’t even think this has much to do with the Pact and Marshal career. If anything, T being the Marshal was bad for the cleansing business, postponing it for various Pact organizing reasons.

Last but not least – as annoying he might have been, without burying the head salad properly this part is now annoying AND unclosed. This won’t end well.

I kinda liked Fate’s Razor better too, but I’m not crazy about either name. A more appropriate name for the guild would be: Why Do These Things Keep Happening to Me?!

Aha! I have the perfect name for the guild: The Die Hards!

In my case it would be The Die-A-Lots…

Or in your home instance, so that it’s not a spoiler confusing newer players.

I don’t really crave for an in-game present that much. I’d like to see some nice new real-life merch in decent quality. I’ve been wanting a GW2 t-shirt for quite some time, but don’t like any of the current designs. And on top of that I’ve read several times about how the picture didn’t survive the first washing and the t-shirts were not that well made…

There was a merch related thread some time ago so I hope something good is on the way.

lol ok, flame if you must! yes there is a lot behind the story that is involved in leadership but consider that the vigil, whisperers, and priory and any other race already has generals in place to command their forces and resources. basically what trehearne is tenamount to is a U.N. strike force commander he helps facilitate communications between nations etc etc…

To me that’s like saying we will use 90% of Americas forces to ground and air combat a war, and call the victory for the U.N. yes the U.N. probly helped coordinate and centralize things, but they are by no means the cause of victory. troops of whatever country you send in are the victors, as are their respective commanders. they fought the fight and implemented all the strategy and resources.

But here you don’t have 90 % of one force, it’s more like equal thirds at the beginning at least, so the cooperation takes far more effort to actually work. Had there be 90 % Vigil forces, then Almorra would become leader and even a possibility of anyone else wouldn’t as much as cross her mind. And others would probably agree, although not happily.

And (beware, BIG THOUGHT coming…) if Trahearne were a strong, self-reliant leader or the Pact had someone else in that position, there would be no need of you, the second in command, the Pact Commander. You’re there to compensate for Trahearnes shorcomings. I dare say he does not show his doubts to anyone but the PC, so he’s probably not considered a weak leader by a majority of the Pact.

Let’s say Trahearne and the PC are much like Frodo and Sam (without it being clear which is which… hope it’s understandable, I’m not sure how to write it quite right). They need one another to get the job done. Or at least Trahearne needs you, which is definitely better than the other way around

For the biggest majority of us, its not the fact that he was named leader and we weren’t. And as for the logistics side of things, yes, someone other then the character should be made leader. The biggest qualm about this is the fact he was a poorly written leader. He is perceived as being weak, unable to make decisions, and a worrisome bother in his vocal skills with his constant whinning of “this wont end well…”, not to mention our choice was forced on us to vote for him as the leader (there was literally no other option then to be railroaded in this direction). Leaders aren’t like trehearne. When it comes to this situation this is how it comes off to us… Some tree in a forrest had a vision one day of greatness for another of its tree folk. despite thousands of other qualified candidates that are well more respected, time tested, and proven capable, the entirty of tyria just said “hey, you know what? fug it, well go with that tree thing over there and hope for the best. who cares if we have entire multi national army with generals to pick from… we want that boy over there…yes.. the one with the pointy ears…with no combat experience… and ponty ears…. or leadership experience…. did we mention the ears? ok good… cuz that’s important to us!”

The problem of all the experienced generals was belonging to one of the orders. So Trahearne was probably not the best option strategically-wise but was the only one plausible for political reasons. Plus he had expert knowledge on Orr, good for the
Orders’ reps, because they don’t look so much as a bunch of kids unable to agree on anyone else… I won’t comment on pointy ears fetish, it’s unproven for all of the big heads involved.

“This won’t end well” – What if he’s just being a bit morbid (and enjoying it secretly), you know, a necromancer…

And yes, unsensitive railroading sucks big time.

snippity snip

gw2 is 4 years old. Its assumed in the story that you actually did the content by now. A large part of which is all the dungeon paths. In which case you see the other races hero’s quite a bit. You also team up with the entire destiny’s edge to kill zhaiten.

snip some more

I’ve been playing for over a year and I’ve done the story dungs several times. Still I don’t see how Eir is so crucial, important or even helpful at all (I mentioned it in at least one of my posts. However I’ve no right to require that anyone goes through my rants, they get tiring after a while I guess). And that is the problematic part. If a NPC is meant to be important to me (as in me = PC), we should have some decent interaction. I should meet the NPC, talk to them enough and should feel that they are there by my side when needed. None of that did Eir manage in the PS and story dungeons. Was she even there when I was working my kitten of, defending the airship against Risen in Arah story? Oh, wait, she was. I got a glimpse of her hiding inside the ship. Very useful and friend-like. Yup. I don’t say I hate her or anything, just that the story/narrative guys totally failed in this case and it makes the whole Eir’s burial visit terribly out of place regardless of my (very kittening hurt, tbh) feelings for Trahearne.

New playable race - good or bad idea?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: anninke.7469

anninke.7469

I think that we can expect Anet to put resources into an expansion, but it’s not about cost, it’s about cost vs benefit. Now, I do not know the statistics for GW2 but chances are that just like in other games the vast majority of characters created are human (and in GW2 that might include the norn as they visually are just oversized humans). So that makes creating a new race that not that many people will make use of a bad choice for putting your resources, particularly if the resource cost is high.

I personally doubt that enough people play non humans to make it worth the investment.

Well why should you play anything else then human when 90% of the armors are made for them then streched to kinda fit the other races.

Because I see plenty of them every single day in RL so they get boring no matter how well their clothes fit. For example.

That’s why I said “a simple dialog line…”.
Just giving some in-story reason instead of the reddit post might have been okay.

Hm, maybe he did take over. I kinda didn’t notice (or mind) though, because I went with Vigil on my first/main charachter and I disliked Forgal quite a lot. The guy seriously creeps me out even now.

(And hey, thanks for actually talking about this with me )

(no problem, its nice to have a discussion instead of a flame fest! )

No I must have missed that in your post, my apologies, as that would be just fine too. My focus was on the thread title, and all the eir hating that i was seeing. I don’t particularly like Eir that much, or braham if truth be told, but trehearne was a different matter entirely for me personally. he felt very intrusive and forced onto me, and then to have him be a leader in name only (as he couldn’t make a decision to save his own life) made me feel he was a coward that i had to tolerate as a commander above me. I agree with you on Forgul, he felt very empty as a character and felt more like a placeholder.

“Couldn’t make a decision”? Oh, c’mon, now I’m getting flamy!
While the PC goes kill this, bring that, do you think the fort just grew by itself, all the machinery, troops and provisions needed no organization? That the plans you got to choose from just popped into existence on their own? That anyone just somehow knew what to do and when with no one coordinating them?
Mordy’s blight! Trahearne is effectively the PC’s undervalued office assistant.
(Am I perhaps biased because of working as an office lady? )

Funny enough, I’ve never felt out of control of my story. Not sure why, but I see the Marshal (whoever it is) more as an orgish office ordeal position, so I was always glad I didn’t have to do it. I could just dump all the management mulch on Trahearne’s head (that’s exactly what the PC does) and go do the interesting stuff. Which made me like him even better.
Honestly, saying “Trahearne stole my story and glory” is nearly as strange as it would be if anyone said “Almorra stole my position in the Vigil”.
I wonder how many people will cry bitter tears because they still can’t lead the Pact now that Trahearne is dead.

I know its slightly off topic, and maybe what some of you may not want to hear, but he was vastly unpopular with the community, and I think Anet sensed that and moved focus towards Eir. There wasn’t hardly any chatter about Eir being disliked.

I believe that is because she was hardly kittening involved unless you played Norn. From what I read here and there, I understood some players were angry that Trahearne stole their glory or something. Well, Eir did nothing like that for sure; you see her like 5 times in the whole PS (unless you play Norn).

And I’m still not able to get over my character (a Sylvari, had Trahearne around and helping ever since awakening) having to see Eir as such a close friend just because she was unimportant enough to not get disliked by players (or because the devs like her better or whatever really). That first part of s3e1 just mages me gag. Either I play a character who’s a complete moron or he is a liar for telling those friend-lines only to be able to start a lame named guild with Rytlock. Both suck, however I’ll probably have to go with the latter if I want to cotinue playing. I don’t like playing moronic kittenheads.

A simple in-game dialog line about how for some reason (be it the whole turned Sylvari mess or the PC feeling too bad for killing him) we could not go to Trahearne’s funeral or even have a short visit in the Grove to tell the Pale Tree what happened and see how she does would be fine. Definitely, especially if instead of that we got only a reddit post saying “oh, but you didn’t really care for him much bla, bla… pacing, bla… get over it, we don’t care”.

edit:
One of the reasons why I simply can’t see Eir as more important than Trahearne to my PC. For kitten’s sake he barely knows her!

But it would be fine to tie up the story arc properly before jumping to new stuff. Untill this thing gets closed, there’s always space for the salad mixing in any future story. Just a short visit would take what – a 2 minutes? We’re shown the head salad is fine, we’re done with that and ready for the next villain or whatever.

I imagined my charr warrior standing in Lion’s Arch with some of the remaining Pact soldiers gathered to honor their fallen Marshal. An empty coffin with a picture (or hologram) of Trahearne etched upon it as it may have been too dangerous to bring back the Marshal’s body, it was burned in the jungle. While sylvari may not have traditions to honor their dead; as Marshal of the Pact, Trahearne deserves some send off as he was well-respected by all the Orders and races. The short speech I would have given would be along these lines:

“There is no sacrifice that could be more noble than that of saving your friends and your people from destruction.

Trahearne was a hero. His life’s work was that of freeing Tyria from the Elder Dragons. He may have fallen, but as we live and breathe, we will continue his work in his memory.

In his own words: ‘The Elder Dragons are not stars in the sky. They can be counted. They can be fought. One day we will kill the last of them. Only then will Tyria be safe.’

It was an honor and a privilege to have been by your side. We will make our world safe with you as our inspiration to be something greater.

Good-bye old friend. You will be missed."

I’d really like it. Yeah. (Wanted to write something more but I kind of got lost in the imagined scene. )

Both would be nice, although the latter might require a VERY careful approach and a lot of protective measures (yay for Sylvari toons).

I figure the Eir memorial was more important to the narrative (since Rytlock was more likely to be there, and hence the conversation about starting a new guild; plus it ties up the loose end with Garm) than Trahearne. It doesn’t necessarily mean nothing happened to honor Trahearne though, just that we didn’t get to see it. With 8-9 months between the end of HoT and now, there’s certainly timeline space to put it in somewhere.

And why is tying up Garm’s loose end more important than tying up any of the many other loose ends exactly? The new guild start could just as well happen when meeting with Taimi, unless Rytlock lost all interest in the stuff going on. So no real need for attending any funeral. And even if it IS good for a smooth start, why the heck does Eir have to be a dear friend regardless of how much/little she and the PC were involved together due to the PC’s origin? Or do I have to imagine it to happen off screen as well? “Please go make your own fanfic so the canon makes sense”?

And, just so you know, Eir kittend up too.

Eir was not in command. Not even an officer as near as I can tell. There is a difference between the responsibilities of a soldier and those of the overall commander of an expeditionary force.

Sorry, I should have made myself clear on this one – I meant in the past, not HoT story, that just turned to mulch for everynone.
The Kralky thing where she was in command didn’t go exactly well, although the consequences were far less tragic (except for the DE). And (only my personal feeling on this though) playing mostly non-Norn characters, I meet her pretty rarlely: in AC where she didn’t do very good and in Honor of the Waves she just goes all emo and you have to save her kitten once again. Can’t really remember Sorrow’s Embrace, tbh. And then there’s the thing with her and Braham…
So basically there lies my problem with her being shoved in my face as my PC’s friend and a totally awesome hero everyone must like.

And yes, I realize you didn’t mean to say Trahearne did it on purpose, it was me getting carried away. Sorry for that.

Didn’t Trahearne plan and lead the most disastrous military fiasco in Tyrian history?

He came close to ensuring the extinction of the allied races, all non-dragon spawned sentience for that matter, with his error(s).

The sort of monument he actually earned is probably not what the OP desires.

Did anybody really expect for vines to be able to hit THAT HIGH in the air? For all anybody knew he was relegated to ground combat, so air naturally people would assume would be the safest spot. Boy were we wrong, and until Caithe told us, nobody knew Sylvari could be turned by him either. If we knew both of those, odds are the fight would have gone a lot different.

^That.
And I don’t like how you make it sound as if Trahearne did it on purpose. Oh c’mon… And, just so you know, Eir kittend up too.
(Ooops, am I becoming T’s white knight or someting? Will this end well?)

I start thinking that voiceovers, while nice, are not really a good thing, because they limit dialog too much. I’d much rather have just dialog text in which we’d have far more variability of lines and (our and) the PC’s past choices would actually matter for a change… I hate it when my toon is just a generic pink-pyjamas-nazgul for everyone in the game.

Though I suppose ANet could wave it off as “with all the turned sylvari, many races are iffy about honoring a dead sylvari, even Trahearne”.

And it might actually be an interesting thing to do, provided that someone in the story would mention it. It would totally make sense and would be so much better to add one dialog line about this being a problem than a dev saying “bah, Eir was your friend and Trahearne wasn’t BECAUSE WE SAY SO.”
There could then be another problem – offering the Marshal position to a Sylvari PC. But probably not, as the PC seems to be a basic pink-pyjamas-nazgul to NPCs anyway.

Voice acting is the least problematic part of the Personal Story. I like the PS and further story progress (maybe a bit too much for my own good), but there are so many plot holes, started and unfinished topics and generally inconsistent things that I’m not sure anymore if the word “story” still even applies… And it does not get better with later stuff, because apparently “pacing” is far more important then any sense and inner logic and tying loose ends.
So… don’t fall for the story or it’ll make you sorry.

Yes, you have every right to post your ideas here. The problem is, the people who read these forums can hardly do anything about Chinese servers management and marketing. Also, I see a problem with many people here thinking of funeral as just a way to get disposed of the dead person’s body. If you look at burial customs, very (if not the most) important part of those is to deal with losing someone. You don’t even need a body to do them. Consider all the “fake” funerals when a body could not be retrieved for whatever reason.

Silvary are a race clearly sentient, social and having emotions, so I don’t see how they would feel no need to deal with death. All the more when practically all those deaths are premature and violent. (For some reason one of the posts above felt like “Sylvari have no funerals because none have died naturally of old age so far”, wich sounded terribly wrong.)

And I would like to poit to this translation of memorial writings in Dragon’s Stand with several Sylvari names there – so another example of honoring Sylvari dead (although not by only other Sylvari, but that would be T’s case anyway).

I am baffled as to why Eir gets an entire drawn out funeral while Trahearne got nothing. Not only was Trahearne a bigger player overall, he headed the Pact and his death was as a sacrificial hero while Eir’s was just tragic. I guess this is the general direction of the story though – away from the bigger players and the big picture and a focus on small character driven drama, which is Eir’s (a personal funeral/wake compared to what would be Trahearne’s likely larger military/political funeral as well as the rest of the Pact).

2 things.

1) Eir was a HUGE character for all of the Norn race. She was basically a legend among legends and is portrayed in that way. There is a reason Eir was the leader of Destiny’s Edge. Eir had a norn-specific funeral. There wasn’t many characters from other races there, you essentially had Rox, Rytlock and the player character (depending on race) who weren’t Norn. It was just a memorial service and worked quite well as a narrative device to progress the story.

2) Sylvari are a very young race, less than 30 years old. I believe it is very safe to say that Sylvari do not have a standard memorial service or way to honour their dead. The only Sylvari to die have basically been from combat deaths. If we figure all sylvari are born at the age of maybe 20 or so, the oldest among them is what, 48 now? Treesus wouldn’t have had a memorial because there’s no way Sylvari honour their dead, to our knowledge. Sure, we could have done another way, but who is to say that’s the correct way? I’m fairly certain Charr, Humans and Asura all have their own way of dealing with death, and we know that Norn do so by Moots and telling of the dead’s Legends.

It would have felt a bit out of place.

Ad 1) Eir was a huge character FOR THE NORN RACE. That is the important piece. Maybe she should have been just as important for the others, but she wasn’t. And even if she’s a legend not only among Norns, there’s nothing really making her the non-Norn PC’s close friend. Nothing at all except the devs saying so, wich is nothing but bad writing. So Eir’s funeral would be probably okay without all those empty friednship lines. So no, the memorial service did now work that well, it didn’t have to be there at all. You could simply get a message from Taimi practically anywhere.

Ad 2) So in nearly 30 years of existence and with quite a number of deaths they had no opportunity nor reason nor capability to develop some? Are we talking about the same Sylvari, who are curious just about anything they come across? That makes no sense. Also Riannoc and Evart from this Sylvari personal story chapter are clearly honored in some way. And might be at least an impuls to make some kind of ceremonial.
The other thing is Trahearne was a kittening Marshal of the Pact, that makes him huge too, so it wouldn’t be a tiny little bit out of place to have the memorial done by orders’ representatives for example.

Actually, something I realized tonight while playing Druid…
Being able to see friendly HP bars without having to mouse-over. Especially helpful for open-world bosses, that way I can find who needs saving before it’s too late.

Of course, a non-healer would likely just find the friendly HP bars get in the way, so that might require some thought.

I’d much appreciate this too. Very much. Maybe a toggle option in UI or something?

If i ever want to get beaten by a random player, I can take them to our guild arena, so no need to take that to open world. If you want to duel and don’t have a guild arena, just make a dueling guild and get one. Duels solved.

And inspecting others’ gear? Maybe but players must be able to toggle it enabled/disabled, because it somehow feels like checking random people’s clothes and bags on the street without their consent… creepy…

Maybe they could at least cheer for you instead of standing around completely idle, like you can cheer for instance owner if you do some parts of personal story in a party

If nothing else, the Blood Rubies are salvageable. So unless that is changed I don’t think they’ll go into wallet.

The backpiece skin goes to your wardrobe, so you can use it on any character for Transmutation Charge. Glider skins can be switched in Hero panel. Any toon can use any skin you have unlocked.

I won’t tell you what to buy, I myself am a “wooo, that’s pretty… oops, I bought it” type of person, so I’d rather be quiet.

>Zeivu: But they still do mourn their deceased. The Pale Tree herself mourns Riannoc in Sylvari personal story. And there’s that one Sylvari lady and her killed lover’s grave she wants to protect at any cost.
And anyway, that cited link still kittens me off like a giant basket full of fluffy kittens, because it just shows how the story (as much as i generally like it) sucks in some aspects and they know it and don’t care and only come up with lame excuses. I mean, if they wanted Eir to be so important for the PC regardless of said PC’s origin, they should have made her that by her deeds, not by just retrospectively saying “oh, but she IS your dear friend, didn’t you know?”

>Oldirtbeard: Had they invidted me and others from this thread, all could have been alright (maybe). But they didn’t so here comes the storm.

<snip> By then, the Cantha expansion will hit.

Source pls.

Isn’t it just the same as saying “by then the hell will have frozen over”?

I didn’t think about it from that perspective.

I took it as saying " cantha will be here in a year".

Might have been meant that way. I just couldn’t resist…

Trahearne’s memorial would not end well.

I saw what you did there.

But there was nothing left of him. Also his was when Mordi went boom. Don’t need another send off, and hole we are at it, we never had one for our mentors.

But at least you went to tell your order’s leader who then had enough decency to show concern for the dead person. And the next mission is all like “let’s take Claw Island back so that his/her sacrifice was not in vain”, which I dare say is a send off, and a pretty nice one considering there’s not really much time because of the threat you need to take care of.

You certainly may, but (yes, I did my homework and looked at the linked article) the problem is in “the sake of enjoyment”. If I don’t enjoy what I’m being given, why should I make any sacrificing for its sake?
