I’ve just saw the update post… And I speculate that I won’t be able to play ep5 before giving birth, Mordykitten. I should somehow make my guildies wait for me, so I’m not alone when I get to play it. And to avoid spoilers.

No worries. Just log in for 5 seconds when you pass your computer by, and the content will be free and really 8 waiting for you when you come back later.
Congratulations and best of luck.

No prob there, I should be able to unlock it in time (or can let my husband take care of it). I just selfishly hoped I’d be able to play some more before the baby’s born

And thank you

On one hand, yes, in-game prank would be awesome. But on the other, the notes are really fun and at least no one (hopefully) will get offended by those. Well done

And I’d actually really like the thing with planting Caladbolg. I’m all for running around with miniature Trahearne on my back, saying “This won’t end well” randomly.

I might be a sick kitten but I find this mini totally absolutely hillarious. Actually, if I could get a sword (or mace) skin to go with it I’d be really plesased. (Fish slapping dance, anyone? )

And I just don’t see it “desperatly gasping for air in vain” or whatever. They do these mouth-moves in the water as well for breathing.

Same here, game is unplayable since this morning, at first I was blaming my internet provider (UPC, Czech Republic) but it seems that is not the case.

Plus one – CZ, UPC. Huge spikes, ping up to 4k. Tried the port swapping, didn’t help for more than 5 minutes.
Strangely enough, guildies with different providers (same city) seem to have been ok so far…
Do you know about anyone having these problems with any other provider than UPC? Just out of curiosity.

I asked around, and one of my friends with a different provider (netbox) has the same issue, so it’s definitely not upc (which, frankly, I wouldn’t even consider strange at this point, upc tends to be garbage)

Thanks for info. Meanwhile, I learned the hard way that defeating the Vale Guardian with ping over 4k is a no-no And also met another guys suffering from the same condition.

I liked the chapter pretty kitten much. Particularly the little thingies like class-specific options (I laughed so hard I almost fell off my chair after succesfully using the ranger one), return of at least a few dialog choices and that one Taimi’s line taking in consideration my PC’s race for a change.
The only thing I found really annoying was having to do map completion tasks to progress in the story (right after doing it out of curiosity).

Why did my Charr Druid and My Norn warrior handle the situation almost exactly the same?

Same reason like when my Sylvari druid seemed to care about not only Eir more than about Trahearne (knew the dude since leaving the pod, had to kill him, but apparently no big deal) or about the Pale Tree (yup, who would actually care about their badly wounded comatose parent/goddes figure, right? let’s just kite off to Shiverpeaks to a Norn burial).

By reading the in-game S1 primer.

Something like “and you deeply care for him, him and her, because you’ve read that you do”?
Can’t say it works well for me…

The wiki also does a kitten good job of filling in the blanks of ls1.

Yep, it’s awesome for filling in the blanks. But sadly not so great for making a player care for someone. I mean – I know what happened being the story-addict I am. But if one does not experience it directly, it’s kind of distant. Like a person appearing at your door saying you had a wonderful time full of mutual sympathy last summer and became close friends; that person has, I don’t know, photos or letter or some other prove confirming it, but you have no recollection of that at all.

What do you mean by “many”? He had only two.
First – he was a bit too talkative.
Second – he, by his own long-time work, got to be considered (more) respectable (than the PC) by many of Tyrian leading figures.

Oh, there might be another after all – he considered the Pact Commander his friend and thus dared to share his doubts with them and also had the nerve to ask for help.
Wow, what a lowly good-for-nothing…

Anyone who lost a life to a sylvari or the actions of the pale tree could have the right motivation for an assassaniation. Or just one of the many evil groups (nightmare, bandits, inquest,…). Finding a culprit wouldnt be a problem

For the storyline:
It wouldnt be a problem for the story to have independent sylvari. The pale tree’s role and actions could be explained through some kind of memory seeds, which would redeem or condemn her actions. After her death the sylvari would be free from her influence and could hunt the murderers of they beloved mother.

You know, it might actually be a very interesting plot.
I originally thought something along the lines “everyone hates Sylvari now, so the assasination is kind of looked upon with understanding by all other races and maybe even officially supported” and that would probably be a problem for a Sylvari PC (considering the generic-pink-nazgul-to-NPCs rule wouldn’t apply), because it should set them on a lonely-avenger-against-all path. Not that it doesn’t sound interesting, but it’s a bit unreal to apply.

Trahearne’s importance is based around the existence of the Pact and the uniting of Tyria against the Elder Dragons. However without Eir none of that would have been possible. For she was the one who formed Destiny’s Edge and was their leader. People believe that Rytlock or Logan are more important than Eir, but she was their ‘boss’ and the one who saved them from a life of fighting in arena fights.

Without Eir showing Tyria that the five races could work together to defeat the Elder Dragons, Trahearne would not have been able to do the same via the Pact.

Trahearne was pretty much a general, but Eir was a legendary warrior and unifier. Not to mention that on a personal level she means more to the game’s main characters than Trahearne, who really only forged a close bond with the player.

The game didn’t do a great job of showing the importance of Eir but GW2 is founded on her actions.

But her legendary deeds alone can’t make her the PC’s close friend, which she’s apparently supposed to be and which has been stated to be (important one of) the reason(s) why we go to her funeral.

killing the Pale Tree probably would require either an army that’d need to fight through a host of very determined defenders, or a magical nuke of some kind.

One only needs to invent a weapon that a small group can carry unnoticed. We have fought with a lot of Mordrem and we have the best and most pragmatic minds (Arcane Council) right next to largest collection of knowledge about dragons and their minions (Rata Novus) and it is only a matter of time before they get their hands on that information. You have to realize we killed the mind of the Elder Dragon of Mind without preparation or anything. Nothing would be surprising any more.

Who would go on the mission? And what to do with any sylvari PC if something like that happened (regardless of whether the mission succeeded)?

I was somewhat weirded-out by the whole Eir deal during LWS3.

Like… Trahearne was 100x more important than Eir during both the main story and HoT, yet we hear like one line of dialogue about Trahearne, yet have a whole mission dedicated to remembering Eir.

I’ll admit she was a large part of the Norn personal story, but for every other race it just doesn’t make any sense.

I agree. I miss her too, but Trahearne was far more integral – and close to me.

I can’t even say I miss her… Barely ever met her and had no chance to get close.

As for Trahearne haters – I’d really like to know how many people actually really dislike him and how many are just mindlessly following the idea because they herad/read it somewhere and possibly think it cool.

(I somehow made up a fanfic personal story chapter in which my sylvari PC can’t bring himself to go and tell the Pale Tree he killed Trahearne, so instead he ends up in LA drowning himself in booze until a norn guy sent by Braham shows up and literally drags him over to Hoelbrak… Not very happy I felt the need to do so.)

I can understand (all too well) the problems with large back items obstructing view, I can also understand that people may not like the glittery flashy shiny looks of some characters for whatever reasons. And while I do think that having a way to lower/hide those effects would be nice, I really don’t like the attitude “Your taste is annoying because I don’t like it” or “I don’t like your character’s style, so it’s hideous”. If nothing else, offensive wording brings up unnecessary opposition and can thus harm the presented idea in the end.

Trahearne was my friend. I felt more close to him than I felt to Eir. Now, I don’t really know why ANet made me to say that I will greatly miss her*. It’s sad she died but I am more sad over Trahearne’s death than hers.

*Better yet, I know but I disagree: It was a trick to force a false sympathy and future friendship for Braham. Sorry, but Rytlok and Canach are far more interesting characters than Braham.

I’m the same with you on Trahearne. For the rest, to each his own, but yes, I felt the same way about Eir. I loved Eir too, as a mentor, looked up to her, but Trahearne I loved as the closest of friends. I felt as if we had an understanding.

But I’m not about to bash the rest of the remaining Pact or Destiny’s Edge. I’ve still a loyalty to them. But ultimately, I fight for Trahearne, as I always have.

Really, the stupid decision here was to have an individual memorial for Eir rather than a mass memorial service for “all of our fallen friends” or something like that.

^Seriously, this. As a non-norn, I was fairly apathetic to all of the NPCs and interactions at Eir’s memorial (except for Garm. Poor doggy)

Many Pact soldiers lost their lives to the Mordrem ambush, including its very own leader. The entire organization is completely shaken to its core. As its former second-in-command, we really should’ve been attending to that whole debacle in the form of a mass memorial that addressed the death of one of the game’s most significant NPCs. This could’ve easily included a dedication to Eir, since she partook in the Pact initiative of killing Zhaitan.

Extremely surprised/disappointed Anet didn’t think of that

Yep. And it would have made much more sense than having to love and miss Eir so much out of the blue.

It isn’t so much that the Sylvari aren’t developed enough to deal with death individually; rather there hasn’t been enough time for them to form a codified cultural response to death. An individual may pick up on different ways of dealing with death and grieving loss. As a society though they have yet to form a cultural standard response to death.

I don’t know… Even very primitive societies have some way to send off their dead and it’s usually a community event. Sylvari have been around for almost 30 years and have seen many deaths during that time; they’ve also seen other races’ burial rites. And they seem to be pretty close to each other emotionally, so approach this individual (or ignorant) doesn’t make much sense to me.

You mean the decisions left for the PC? Aren’t those to make the player feel they get to decide something as oposed to “I decided we need to do this and that, so go” a strong leader would say? Or is it in the wording and presenting those choices? No NPC fights their own fights in this game. If they would, players would have nothing to do.

LOL, does he really get stuck on terrain? I’ve never noticed! I have to go and see… Poor guy
But the rez-need is for all of them big badkitten heroes. It’s the exact reason why I can’t think of Eir as highly as she probably deserves. HotW dungeon (not only). She still down instead of helping. Is she a friggin’ hero or a cleaning lady?

I’m still green in GW2, so the (probably) relevant time were long before me playing, but was it really such a big part of community? Because, from what I see on this forum in general, it’s not about numbers but more about being vocal and obstinate enough. And people are vocal usually only when they don’t like something, so the part of community that was okay with him or didn’t care might have remained quiet and is thus omitted from your counting. And may come out now, when they feel annoyed. There’s also the part who would mind literally anyone else than the PC in the leading position, because “I’m the hero so why do I have to obey someone else?” mindset. It could then mean that Eir is not liked better. She is just not cared about by the majority.
Oh my, now I’ve made myself feel sorry for her… She probably sits in the backstage bar with Trahearne, both drinking like the world’s about to end just to wash away the pain

How about Trahearne's memorial?

in Living World

Whether its equal thirds or 90% of one, the principle is no different. Sylvari made up less then 20% of the pact force, and even less after mordy decided to make it real.(i know the mordy thing had little impact as it was after the fact, but still…) I also disagree with having to make up for trehearnes shortcommings. It is not my responsibility to babysit a superior officer. not even third world countries would tolerate that.

I also think it wrong that trehearne being a strong leader would negate our need. quite the opposite is true, as said before, he is stuck in the office and still needs people to do important missions that he cannot do. the matter under discussion is respect at this point.

I do understand what you are trying to say about sam and frodo, but there is one component seriously lacking in that department… the fact those two loved each other as friends before they were burdened with the great journey. They werent forced on each other as strangers.

I don’t see being a Sylvari of any importance, the Pact was formed by the three multiracial Orders, that’s why I went with “thirds”.

A strong leader, Trahearne or whoever, would sure need to send you on missions, but wouldn’t need you at the Pact Commander position. No second in command would be necessary. You’re only there, because T feels he need’s you there. (Is it bad writing? Yep. But it is canonically given too.) So you’d most likely remain a “regular if admired” warmaster/lightbringer/magister under your respective Order head.

Then there’s an issue of how each of us actually sees Trahearne, I don’t really see him as weak. Having doubts? Yes. But not weak. Why do you think he is? Where and how does it show? (If you clear it up to me it might stop me from bombarding you with unending blabbering…)

To the last paragraph. I believe you were supposed to become friends with T before the Pact’s founding, but it didn’t come across well. Cough… writing… cough… Probably the same way you were probably supposed to become friends with Eir. Cough… The only difference is that with T you had a lot more time to do so.
