I bought over 100 keys during the event (only spent 20 USD rest was in game gold)

I got 1 skin. I KNEW what I was getting into. It is a chance/gamble/however you want to phrase it. Honestly, I probably wouldn’t buy anything including skins if it were direct purchase.

For me it’s the omg I got something rare that I can sell, not the omg I got the skin I’m after….

No RNG would mean no money from us that like to gamble a bit, and lets be honest, who is going to spend more money, gamblers, or non-gamblers? I think gamblers by definition spend more…

I am the exact opposite of this.

It’s my hope that ArenaNet has enough to offer both kinds of players.

While not entire impossible, nowhere does it say the karka have anything to do with a deep sea dragon. All it says is that the karka have been “driven from their home.” We could speculate that’s a result of dragon activity, but speculation is all it can be at this point.

I’m pretty excited for this update. Expectations have been set with the Halloween event.

Thoughts on Ascended Gear? [Merged threads]

ANET has not broken their promise, since the early days of BETA we have had armor/weapon progression in the game.

Don’t you remember leveling up and getting a “white” colored item and then doing a Heart quest and getting a “Green” item? from there you went to Yellow and then orange for exotic. GW2 already had armor/weapon progression guys! Ascended will be the next tier of progression.

What GW2 means when they talk about no traditional armor/weapon progression is that you can obtain the same item stats whether you craft, quest, purchase in the trading post or run dungeons… they will all be equal in power. Even the LEGENDARY are equal in stats as the exotic, just a cooler skin to sport.

Ascended will be the next logical tier in stats but I am sure there will be many ways to acquire this. Personally I hope they stick with Dungeon Hunting.

ANet stated that once you hit 80 you would easily be able to obtain a set of max stat gear (Exotics). This is the “plateau” they talked so much about. They said once you reached this gear plateau and had exotic max stat gear, you could grind for prettier/better looking gear, but no gear with higher stats would be released. So they actually promised no stat progression/gear treadmill/power creep after you hit the exotic set. This Ascended gear goes against that promise.

Citation needed.

If this new tier of gear can only be used in that new dungeon and nowhere else, not even in other dungeons, than it would be acceptable. I don’t care if players can use the skins or not as long as the stats are downgraded outside of the new dungeon.

If Arena Net really designed that new gear with better stats and they don’t restrict it to that particular new dungeon they betrayed a lot of their most faithful fans, they betrayed those that played GuildWars for years.

If Arena Net starts the Gear Treadmill I won’t spend any more money on GW2, I’ll continue playing as long as it’s fun, but I won’t buy Gems or an expansion.

I would never want to put work into something that could only be used in certain areas in PvE. The idea that if such gear wasn’t restricted to a special area it would be a “betrayal” has no basis in any fact that I know of.

Were you ever told to expect such a thing? Nope, so not getting it isn’t a betrayal. You were also never told specifically (not anywhere that I ever saw, anyway) that there would never be any gear that’s better than what’s in the game now. So that also is not a betrayal.

What we have is a design philosophy that values the process over the reward. If the rewards are being increased, what that tells me is that the process itself perhaps is going to get harder.

We really have so little factual information about this right now, reacting emotionally like this isn’t really helping anything.

So everyone’s fairly cool with legendary weapons being in the game, but introduce something similar for armor and yall poop yer pants?

How does that make any sense?

The whole idea sounds pretty cool to me. I just hope that new armor is smexy.

People are alright with Legendary weapons because Legendary weapons are exactly as powerful as Exotic weapons. That Pearl Broadsword you can craft and use as soon as you hit level 80 at a cost of maybe 1.5-2.5 gold is exactly as powerful as the Twilight that you might get after several hundred hours of grinding.

So from the description of Ascended items, they’re not similar at all to Legendary weapons.

After reading what little is available I agree you have a point. I’m still making my “you gotta be kidding me” face over the outcry over this. Not as a knee-jerk reaction to an existing knee-jerk reaction, but because ArenaNet has proven (in my opinion) that they deserve to have the benefit of the doubt.

For the Halloween event, people reacted strongly and negatively at first but came around (kinda like with dungeons). Not everything about the Halloween event was wonderful in my opinion, but I really feel ArenaNet has shown their mettle. So to me, the outcry over Ascended items and Infusion upgrades is premature to say the least even if these items are not all that similar to legendary weapons. That was not such a great comparison on my part, but ArenaNet has shown they know what they’re doing when it comes to this aspect of the game (it’s tempting to throw in a “wish they’d fix what’s currently broken first” but that’s no fun—new content is still a must).

I swap between scepter/dagger and staff. The cooldowns on each are such that I can just frontload every targetable ability for each weapon upon swapping and use the abilities that hit harder based on number of conditions afterward, like scepter #3, if I remember right. I just started playing necro and mine is only level 28 but I’m loving it pretty hard.

A Growing Disappointment and Resentment

I can see why ArenaNet is going to fight tooth-and-nail every step of the way to not make things easier, especially when you do something like throw the MMO role holy trinity out the window. People are still getting used to this: everyone complains about the dungeons until they finally figure it out (same thing with the clock tower from the Halloween event).

And, maybe, it’s the same with Orr.

Orr is different. No more cute little hearts to turn gold. It’s brutal. If you go alone, and you are not very skilled (like me, heh), you’ll die a lot. It bugs me to death that most of the waypoints are contested and nobody can save the stupid choppers.

It’s just not easy. And ArenaNet is not going to hold our hands and make it easier. Can’t clear major objectives on the map? Things are going to stay bad until the players finally get their act together and coordinate. It does happen, just not all that often, it seems.

But in most other MMOs you could max level without ever dying once while questing. Nothing was ever really a challenge except raids (and even, for some people, not so much). In GW2, Orr and dungeons are (mostly) that challenge. Maybe this is partly what ArenaNet meant when they said the whole game is “endgame.”

You’re not gonna have a good time in Orr unless you’re really skilled or in a group at least, and coordinating with other groups at most in order to clear the bigger objectives.

I think a lot just depends on the attitude of the player. If you’re the kind of person who gets angry when things don’t go your way, that’s not exactly bad game design. That’s just your disposition and attitude about it (notice I didn’t say bad attitude, I’m not judging here).

Take the clock tower, for example. Some people got really mad, really fast and others (who died just as often) laughed their way through it. Was the game design good or bad? Seems to me that people too easily mistake their own assumptions and attitudes for “obvious” “truths” about the game. I think it’s more about the characteristics of the player, not the game.

Which leads me to guilds.

Most guilds really aren’t all that great because in the rush to get bodies in the door (gotta get them influence points and bigger is better amirite???) you don’t have a cohesive group of people who respect each other. The guilds I’m in organize Orr hunting trips, people often want to do the dragon events or run dungeons, and roleplay. The most important job of a guild leader is picking the right people to be in the guild in the first place, but most people don’t know that.

I don’t want to seem like I’m lecturing or like I know it all, here. But I’ve actually been thinking about all this stuff a lot. I used to get really angry and frustrated very quickly when things didn’t go my way, and I’m not a particularly skilled player so you can imagine how often I’d rage. At first, dungeons seemed impossible, but other people kept completing them, and repeatedly, so obviously they weren’t impossible. There’s plenty of video proof out there, people are not lying or trolling. Same thing with the clock tower. And maybe it’s the same with Orr, too.

Another thing I’ve noticed is that while I would get really angry, other people did not. In fact they laughed it up and loved every minute of it. That was a revelation for me about my own assumptions and attitudes, and I’m still wrestling with it (I still rage more than I want to). But it’s why I’m saying what I’m saying here, how you know where I’m coming from. I’m not just blithely judging or dismissing your concerns.

I can’t speak to PvP because I almost never engage in it, and the story and voice acting is a very subjective thing. I’m not very critical of the voice acting and I don’t know the whole story yet (still working on that). I think the underwater combat in this game is the best I’ve seen but the only other games I’ve played with underwater combat are WoW and Rift. So, again, it’s just a matter of opinion, really.

But as to some of the other concerns you raised, I hope this was somewhat helpful.

I would love to see dwarves (stone form or not) as playable in the future. Ugly tengu? No way. Not that they were likely anyway. Don’t take it personally if you’re one of those people who want tengu to be playable: I’m just expressing my opinion about it. You don’t have to agree with it. Love your tengu and have a nice day.

To all the other people posting and moaning, its only been a few months now that this has been bugged, and they did give us the whole Halloween event with mad kings and lag and extreme queues and no bugs at all and instant updates if any were found so please try and be a little more fair when you complain about 1 simple game breaking bug that they have had a fix for for over 14 days.
They will implement it in there own good time, and remember, we just buy the ability to play the game, not the game itself.

This is irrelevant and incorrect. The Halloween event has nothing to do with this, don’t even bring it up. And EULA terms also have nothing to do with this and are irrelevant. It doesn’t matter if I bought the game or the ability to play the game. That has no bearing on this.

Although, you could say I bought the ability to finish my story quest.

Story quests are a major component of the game. This is not some minor issue and there is no need at all for you to show up here and try to render people’s concern insignificant.

So, I couldn’t get the clock tower. I didn’t have the coordination to make it past that bit after the first platform rises up while you wait on the gear wheel. I just kept dying.

At first (like many, many people) I was kinda angry that it was so hard because nobody likes to be reminded that they suck. For me (just speaking for myself) it was extremely challenging and (here’s the key part) this year it was too difficult for me.

I did everything else and got the titles, etc., all of which are account-bound so the only point in repeating the events is to get a decent back piece for all my characters. Hopefully, there will be new things in the event next year that weren’t in this year. But just in case there isn’t or even if there is…

I now have something to look forward to next year, and every year until I get it: conquering the clock tower.

I’m cool with that.

Halloween Event Feedback

biggs.4702

I really enjoyed most of the event. I loved the way things were done over for Halloween, such as LA and the crafting screens. I loved the costumes available in the gem store for a fixed price and absolutely hated what you did with the RNG on the chests. I have not and will not ever buy keys simply because you don’t know what you’re paying for and I don’t buy things unless I know what I’m getting. If you had more stuff available in the gem store instead of just by random chance, I probably would have spent more money.

The quests for the books were fun but I didn’t do the last one on a low-level character (which some folks complained about). It reminded me that, overall, there is an incredible lack of decent back armor pieces in the game.

The labyrinth was head-scratcher: was there a point to it? It had no story and there was nothing to do in it but run around and zerg stuff. That’s fun up to a point but it gets old quickly and unless you’re in a group you get owned. The knockbacks and interrupts were a little ridiculous.

I really enjoyed the Inquisition and the Rumble, but the instructions for the Inquisition were not clear at all. The most basic thing: that you begin playing as a villager and become a ghost if you die wasn’t explained and I had no idea what the hell was going on. I can tell someone thought that was supposed to be obvious, but it wasn’t at all obvious to me (which means I wouldn’t be the only one, and no, it doesn’t mean I’m stupid, either).

The clock tower. Yeah, I only lasted 30 at the most on that. Nothing to do here. I’m torn about it because while I understand how you’d want to make content only the most skilled players can complete… I dislike it because I’m not one of them.

I loved the glow-in-the-dark and plastic mobs: what a fun idea (especially the “Made in Tyria” on the spiders).

The candy corn thing was cool, but I didn’t appreciate having normal nodes commandeered by candy corn because it made normal metals harder to farm. At one point I needed platinum and was grumbling at all the candy corn I was running into when what I wanted was platinum. I realize it’s probably much easier on the dev teams to do it that way, but still…

Also the horrific story of the Mad King didn’t jive at all with what a fun guy he suddenly became in Act IV. Suddenly he’s a comedian and we’re all playing Simon Says with him? Really?

So… there’s the good and the bad, as I see it. Overall it was great fun and I loved it. I’m really looking forward to future holidays in GW2. Especially if they don’t involve RNG baloney with chests and keys.

I want the RNG factor removed altogether from this sort of thing, or at least the option to buy skins for a higher gem price than the cost of a few keys. When I pay money (gems) for something, it’s because I know exactly what I’m going to get for the expenditure. If I don’t know exactly what I’m going to get (RNG chance) then I’m not going to spend anything.

1. Will you or will you not be buying black lion trading company or random number generation materials again?

No.

2. Did you buy them in the past?

No

3. If you would not buy trading post material/gamble, would you support direct to buy weapon skins and what general price do you find acceptable from a business standpoint both as a customer and realizing that they must make money as a business?

I would buy them. TERA had such things priced at $9.99 and I bought a couple of them.

4. Do you believe that future events will also be handled with random number generation to make profit based on limited time item acquisition?

Yes

5. If you believe that the future events will be handled in the same manner, does this realization negatively effect your trust of Arena Net in regard to handling micro transactions for permanent content?

No, because “trust” as you’re using the word doesn’t apply here. ArenaNet has done nothing untrustworthy. I just don’t feel it’s worth it to buy keys: they cost too much and the chances of drops are too low, end of story. That’s not a matter of trust.

6. Did you obtain a skin or whatever it is you were looking to get from the black lion trading chests? From the Mad King Chests?

No, because I have no keys and I’m not going to buy any.

7. Have you bought any of the direct purchase, set priced halloween items. If so, will you be buying more?

Yes, and I will buy more in the future for this event and most likely for future events.

I’ve never bought keys, and unless they either cost less or give you more, I’m never going to. If I want boosts, I’ll buy them directly. To make the tonics that many have been throwing away (because they’re worthless other than the few minutes of fun to be had with them and in my opinion it’s not enough fun to justify buying keys) a crafting ingredient is a “richard” move in my opinion. The chance of getting anything else good from these chests is so low that it’s just not worth it.

If you want people to take a gamble, you have to get them to believe the gamble will be worth it, and this is where I believe ArenaNet has failed. I don’t believe the keys are worth it. Maybe there are enough suckers out there that do, and it makes enough money for ArenaNet to feel it was worth doing. Is that worth the bitterness so many people feel about this? I guess we’ll find out.

In order to make me believe buying keys will pay off, one of two things needs to happen.

1) The keys need to cost a lot less so that I’m happy to spend gems on them (and you’d think that’s what ArenaNet would want: people eager instead of reluctant to spend gems) because I feel I’d have a better chance at the good stuff.

and/or…

2) The chances of getting something really good need to be increased to the point where word of mouth spreads that the keys are worth the gamble.

Like I said, if ArenaNet feels like how they’ve worked the keys so far has been correct and profitable enough they feel they can ignore the complaints of some players, then I guess there’s nothing to do here.

But it seems to me that what they would really want is both money and happy players because happy players leads to much more money down the road. And with the backlash over the keys I don’t think they can claim players are happy about this.

This happens to me CONSTANTLY and I’m SICK OF IT. Random invulnerability in underwater fights and terrain difference invulnerability. This is not how it’s supposed to work. It violates every instinctive notion players have of how things are supposed to work. Look, if I’m standing up on a hill or a rock then I CAN SHOOT DOWN ON YOU. End. of. story. The underwater thing had better be a bug and if the terrain one is intentional then I suggest ArenaNet seriously reconsider, because like I said this violates every instinct we have about how things should work, and you just can’t do that. You will never be “right” enough to overcome the sense of offense players will feel about something so obvious as shooting down on an enemy.

The WHOLE POINT of PW is the STUN. Have you not seen people get pistol-whipped in movies? The idea is to sap the poor guy: to knock him out. That is what PW is supposed to be.

The damage was too high and it should have been nerfed. If anything, I’d like to see the stun upped to a full second and have the damage reduced even more. Or have it be a knockdown. Now that would be along the lines of a pistol whipping as we’ve come to know it over years in its portrayal in movies and television.

Incredibly hard, incredibly unrewarding

in Fractals, Dungeons & Raids

Posted by: biggs.4702

biggs.4702

I’ve read through this entire thread so far and it’s been quite the humbling experience. I ran AC story mode for the first time the other night not really knowing anything about it with a group of friends and we basically death-zerged it, which was frustrating and unrewarding. Last night I ran CM story mode for the first time and it was easier, except none of us in the PUG had ever run it before so we spent a bit of time wandering around being lost, which was kinda funny.

When I saw the title of this thread, I figured it would be full of complaints on the one side and lol-l2p-nub-umadbro on the other side. But went ahead and read it anyway in case I found some gems of real wisdom, because even though I was frustrated, I also knew that the dungeons were “working as intended” and I’ve seen video footage of ArenaNet devs running them with members of the press and such, and essentially saying as much (sorry no links, just a memory in my head at this point).

I am… slowly… figuring this GW2 thing out and it is, indeed, totally different than everything I’ve learned from previous games and their mechanics. Learn to dodge, yes, but it’s more than that. Watching what the mob is doing and reacting with proper timing is key (difficult in a particle effects storm, granted). Knowing and using combo fields, weapon choices, and abilities that benefit the group is key, as others have said. I wasn’t doing any of these things except activating warbanner. The first time you run a dungeon, you don’t know what the mobs are going to do because you’ve never seen them before, so, granted, that’s difficult as well.

But really gives me hope is all the people in this thread who have run them successfully and are not just coming in here and laughing at everyone else who’s having a hard time, but are being truly helpful. Your numbers are proof enough against the complaints, but you’ve also provided great information to help those of us who are struggling figure it out. So, thank you.
