Why should I be forced to change my build? Also hasn’t ArenaNet put out that they don’t like One Shot mechanics that can’t be dodged?

Not calling this player out, but this type of attitude is depressing. Zerker gear is MENT to give you the most DPS with a limited amount of survivability It is not a one shot mechanic, is is a mechanic that is designed to, for once in pve, allow other armor stat combos to be very effective.

As a WvW player, I carry 2 sets or armor already. My zerker pve armor, and my knights, ascended WvW armor. This was the first dungeon I had to switch to knights and could not face roll with my great sword. It was refreshing to use my LB or rifle and actually know my toughness helped me at the end.

I really like the challenge, my guild actually spend some time holding 2 camps for the map so that the queen would spawn. The only reason we did this was because it was a challenge. I also switched from my PvE Zerker gear to my WvW knights. People are right, you still get hit hard, but the extra life and toughness gives u enough time to retreat, dodge get off a heal etc.

Dust is a high commodity low drop item. However, the item is farmable, unlike say silver doubloons. As the price rises, more people will farm it and sell it off. As the price peaks, hoarders will begin a sell off, bringing the price lower until it finds its place.

This is the same complaint that happened with ectos until the garenteed rare from world bosses. Now people are complaining that ectos are dropping to fast. For dust my opinion is to let the market work itself out, the prices will find a balnance eventually through new content, farmers, and people who acquire their goals and no longer need the dust.

Note my opinion is only for this item, and would be different from say doubloons, or venom sacks.

Axe offhand is fairly good in WvW now that Confusion and Retaliation have been nerfed. Axe 4 is mostly there to help you maintain a fury buff. Use Sword main, leap in, hit 5 to build adrenaline, the switch to hammer and smash.

Or if you are really good at timing things and have stability on here is one of my favorite zerg busting moves:

Build adrenaline before battle, jump in with hammer burst then quickly switch to sword burst. If you did it right you will get to use both burst abilities. Use axe 4 than 5 to upkeep fury and build adrenaline. By now you can swap back to hammer and use the burst again. Hard to pull off but devastating and it scatters pug zergs even if you are outnumbered.

All siege except other AC’s should take a significant reduced damage from ACs. Ram’s could even have a buff that they only receive 10% damage from siege except from that ballista skill that is designed to hit siege. All the other changes are fine. It would also be kind of cool is one person could hide in the ram…

Thanks that was very helpful. I usually hit these nods up whenever I am in orr. I use LG in WvW some no profit but at least I don’t have to buy them anymore.

Boon Hate: Bad for WvW Support?

We also have to consider what the value of a crit/boon hate warrior is in WvW. So lets say he can snipe you from the back line with KS while a battle takes place. So what? Killing one person in a ZvZ will not affect the battle. The rifle is single party DPS, so he will have no AoE to hit the zerg. Because of his low armor and life he will be just as vulnerable as most back line speced professions. In siege warfare the LB will still be better all around for its AoE, fire and blast finishers, and pindown.

I would be more worried about axe or sword warriors that know when to time their spin or burst. Flurry and whatever that spinning move is on the axe will be painful if one of the boons you do not have up is protection.

Op is messing a few things up. He is not talking about sPvP as he talked about using consumables that can only be used in WvW PvP. Also Retaliation is based off the targets Power levels, not how much damage you do.

Now to address the issue at hand. Axe 5 is a great skill in WvW against zergs. It is a powerful, reliable, mobile AoE. Retaliation is the direct counter to skills like this so you will just have to be careful when you drop this skill. Another tactic is to use the sword leap skill, axe 5 ,then endure pain. It will protect you against direct damage, your sword 2 skill will have recharged when you finish spinning and you can jump out and set up your next chain.

There are a few things we warriors struggle with and can use some help in WvW and especially sPvP but Retaliation is not one of those issues.

WvW is more then just pvp its partly a pve thing and your wasted space are part of that pve. Now if they add in a way to get the Centaurs and Skritt on your side would be fun. It would add in the 2 added help on the BL maps where EB has 3 type of help BUT it may be odd where they go to once you get them on your side. It could be just added mobs at your towers that appear one for the east side and one for the west side.[/quote]

I understand that and while its debatable that if PvE should be in there in the first place that is another argument. The point is those entire area’s the PvE part plays little to no roll in WvW. Look at the jumping puzzle, JPs can be considered PvE but the reward has WvW items. It gives people a place to brawl and contribute to the team by preventing chest groups or getting siege. Yes it would be better if they were taking camps but at least the JP has some use. The centaur and skritt area are never used. And that is bad for the map.

If they want to keep the PvE part make an event take place up there that allows you to summon skritt or centaur reinforcements. Something 3-5 man teams could do but would not really be worth it for the zerg.

Better map design and defenses for WvW

Honestly there is a lot of wasted space in WvW. What I put in red could be changed to encourage people to use that space more, I mean all that area for a few skill points, come on. The orange has a little more usefulness but is rarely use tactically. Yellow can/is used but I feel a small change could make it even better. The green area is what I like. Terrain makes it fun to fight on and forces zergs to change tactics.

EDIT: The top orange arrow is more yellow than orange as it is utilized and is a safer route to the North. If there was something to do in the top left map I think it would be a great backdoor route.

As for defenses I am kind of on the fence about. Cannons are so powerful if you can have at least a small force defending the front, especially with the new buffs. I like the cannon placement on South Hills, it can still be hit but has some defense. Oil is mostly a buffer when there is one guy at a keep and a zerg shows up with Golems. It would be nice if it got a little more HP and maybe reduced the damage of the player who is on it by a certain %.

This looks really interesting. Having just invested in Ascended Knights stats and exotic armor while using the shout heal build I don’t think I’ll change anytime soon. However -65% condition duration is really attractive, especially with the meta shifting toward condition necros. I would hate to give up my power/precision food but it may be worth it for just the -40% condition duration on the Lemongrass.

So Carabidus – is there a confirmed sweet spot? Do we know what the best proportional min/max is out there?

This is an intriguing question. Again, the assumptions are: a skill coefficient of 1, 2k power and 1k weapon damage, 18387 base health.

The function that generated my second graph is:

[damage formula]/[health] with armor as the independent variable.

For this example, the point of diminishing returns falls at around 6% health taken per hit and an armor value of 1800. I arrived at these values by taking the average value of the function [damage/health] with respect to x (armor). where x = [920, 3000]. I had to pull out my old calculus text to remember the integral formula for that one!

However, this does not imply that investing in toughness beyond 1800 is not worthwhile. It becomes a judgement call based on the question “at what point does diminishing returns exact too high a cost when adding toughness?”. To me, the “sweet spot” is an armor of 2700. Using the aforementioned assumptions (skill coefficient of 1, 2k power and 1k weapon damage, 18387 base health):

% of health taken per hit with an armor value of 2700 = ~4.0%
% of health taken per hit with an armor value of 3000 = ~3.6%

So, it takes a significant investment of 300 toughness to gain only 0.4% reduction. In my opinion, 2700 is where I would stop. This value seems to be the “brick wall”, so to speak.

It would be interesting to see some additional analyses using other hypothetical assumptions for the damage formula. I predict the results would be very similar.

Just wanted to drop in and say thanks for the Armor analysis. I am running Knights Armor, mostly for WvW and some PvE. One thing to note is that in WvW most of the time I am running with a Superior Sharping Stone and are 3k armor. Before I change some of my armor pieces does the extra power I get make up for the damage lost?

Thanks!

What to do with my knights set

Knights is a nice set to run in WvW. Especially with the Superior Sharping Stones that give you more Power with the higher Toughness. As I’ve goten my ascend stuff though I am starting to add in zerker stats to my trinkets and rings for that little bit of damage I feel I need when finishing off enemies.

As for runes, its nice to have soldiers if you are supporting your team with shouts, but it really depends if you want to go more offensive, defensive, or support. Always have a blood lust rune on one of your weapons though.

Ranged Weapon Choice

in Warrior

Posted by: boondocksaint.6529

Rifle’s primary advantage in WvW is its range and #3 skill. It’s burst skill is not bad but is overshadowed by the longbows abality.

As a warrior, even in large ZvZ battles the 900 range is not that much of a hindrance, even as a zerker warrior, (though I would always recommend some Toughness or Vitality.)

I also really love the LB’s combo fields. They can really help your team in a pinch. Best thing to do, is to have your melee set and LB secondary ready, and in the instances when you need the range, get our of combat and swap in your rifle.

Check this guide, give you all around good info.

For PvE, Zerker gear works find for just about everything, though you have to still be quick with atonement swapping and dodging.

I think the exception is level 20+ FOTM. There you will need P/T/V or mix it into your gear with ascended stuff.

For WvW there are 2 main archetypes that work very well.
1. Nuker, this is the straight up P/P/ Crit. damage build, no exceptions on runes or trinkets (you can bring bloodlust weapon sig.) with a staff. You will have only base toughness and HP so you will go down really quick. Be in a group that can soak up the damage for you. With food buffs you will do tremendous AoE 1200 range damage. You can clear walls, help break siege lines, and with some support stop a boon spike zerg in their tracks.

2. The other good archtype is the D/D build. It is more complicated so read the guide I linked for more info, but its basic stats are P/T/V gear that will slowly change as you get better with the build. It is very fast paced but can 1v1 with the thieves and mesmers, and works great in zerg or havoc squads.

While not about armor and gear always remember to bring a focus to help block treb shots, its boring, but can be one of the most important jobs during treb wars in WvW.

Optimal amount of Toughness in WvW?

in Warrior

Posted by: boondocksaint.6529

boondocksaint.6529

As the others have said it really depends on your build. Just remember whatever amount of toughness you use should reflect your offensive capabilities. Do not stack toughness and then try to run around and play a healing tank. You are an offensive support and damage character.

Support your allies during zerg retreats saving their live or absorb some of that Aoe coming off the walls when you siege. Laugh and charge forward as enemies fire ballista bolts that bounce off your armor. Grant fury to your allies and be the first into the fray (though always be aware of your position) when you do a boon spike.

Also, assuming you have a way to keep your swiftness up, you work well is havock groups. Forgot what trait it was but you can passivly grant +70 power to yourself and allies.

Don’t worry about the people who say Zerker gear is the only way to go, that may be true in PvE and a bit more in PvP but WvW is a different game since there are intelligent enemies throwing so much damage your way.

TL;DR: Amount of toughness is up too you, but use it in an offensive capacity, not defensive.

P.S. Knight’s gear is a good starting point, and as you get ascended gear you can go more offensive with P/P/Crit damage or give yourself more survivability with P/T/V.

Ok I’ll play, but as a GW 1 veteran I will try to use some GW 1 themed skills. I’m just doing this for fun and trying to consider sPvP and WvW but if the skills are OP or UP o well.

Warrior: Gladiators Defense, Stance, 100 secs:
For 12 secs you have a 75% chance to block attacks. Every time an attack is blocked you gain 1 random boon for 5 seconds.

Ranger: Signet of the Wild, 120 secs:
Passive: Every time you do damage to a foe you have a 20% chance to summon a swarm of hawks that attack that foe (Internal cool down 5 secs). Active: Grants swiftness for 15 secs, breaks stun and cripples and blinds all foes around you for 12 secs.

Guardian: Defender’s Zeal, 180 secs:
Burn all nearby foes for 8 secs and grant regeneration, vigor and protection to you and nearby allies for 8 secs. Combo Field: Fire

Necro: Order of Undeath, 120secs:
Remove up to 3 boons from target foe and 2 nearby foes, for each boon removed a Jagged Horror is summoned at that foes location. Jagged Horror’s inflict bleeding with each attack.

Mesmer: Mindbender, 180secs:
You are weaken for 8 secs, summon a clone for 30 secs that has 2/3 of your health and and 1/2 of your total stats.

Elementalist: Elemental Fury, 220 secs: Grants fury to you for 10 secs and summons a massive elemental storm at target location that moves around the field for for 8 secs. This storm damages and inflicts conditions based off your atonement.

Thief: Shadow Prison, 60 secs:
Shadow Step to target foe, knocking them down, removing one boon and crippling them for 9 secs. If the foe was not knocked down you stealth.

Engineer: Saturated Vapor———Ignite Vapor 120 secs:
Release a Toxic Vapor at target location that blinds and poisons foes in it for 7 secs. Ignite the vapor causing it to explode, knocking back and burning all nearby foes. (No Engineers or even a class that is similar to it in GW 1).

D/D nerf?

I love my Elementalist. but recognize that D/D is very powerful in sPvP. Many tournament teams pack 2 or 3 D/D. I would hate to see a proper nerf for sPvP hurt WvW and PvE though.

Currently the mobility, healing rate and condition removal are our strong points. (Not going to disagree that thieves have amazing mobality in WvW.) I think a nerf to RTL (longer recharge) or our water line would be appropriate. I do not have any suggestions but a passive nerf could take place by buffing other professions to more easily deal with D/D. (Movement restriction, daze, etc.)

The thing that has made me nervous is the impending D/D nerf along with a potential AoE nerf. My hope is that along with the nerfs focus and staff get a slight buff to their unused skills. (Scepter is actually not bad but could use few changes.)

I know you mentioned your new armor set-up in the last post but do you have any advice on what armor you would recommend for someone who would only do WvW and Fractals? You said P/T/V stats are a must in Fractals but you have been switching your armor set up for WvW. Is there a happy median that I can meet? I am currently on lvl 20 of FOTM and the the Zerkers staff set-up is not working very well any more.

Thanks!
