I don’t like the bestiality angle between Braham (Norn), and Rox (Charr).

::LAUGHS::

That’s a joke, right?

First of all, this is no worse than Spock’s parents being human and vulcan. Or Kirk having a thing for green alien women. Yes, they’re different species, but they’re both fully sentient and consenting adults. As both races come from Tyria, odds are they’re more closely related than Kirk and his green women are.

And don’t let charr “animal features” throw you. Don’t forget, norn are shape shifters, with all of their other forms being even more animalistic than the charr are. They’d have no problems with it if Snow Leopard came to them to give some advice, or Raven fluttered down next to them to impart some words of wisdom. Or if Bear herself gave them a smack upside the head for worrying over unimportant things in a relationship. Charr features won’t stop them from seeing the person behind those features. As they put it in the movie Avatar, “I see you.”

I nearly barfed.

Because no one goes into the Crystal Desert.

The Order of Whispers does. They are from that region.

Keep in mind that the game does not scale to proper lore size. A fast paced journey from Ebonhawke to Ascalon City – in a more direct route than possible for players (that is, going through the Secluded Glen and directly into Plains of Ashford area from there, avoiding the Blazeridge Steppes altogether) – takes about 3 days of constant/near-constant travel. For players, it takes less than an hour.

Obviously, but that hasn’t impeaded the Orders’ in terms of information gathering before.

So it isn’t like the entire continent of Tyria is the size of Germany or some such. You wouldn’t see a 1,000 foot tall structure in England from Switzerland. Same reason you wouldn’t see a 1,000 foot tall Elder Dragon somewhere within the Crystal Desert from outside of it – and you even have a small mountainrange to the north of the Crystal Desert, and access to the desert has been prohibited by foot for a few years by Queen Jennah (three guesses as to why).

I’d say the undead king on the other side might be as good a reason as any dragon.

Also, who said Kralkatorrik is “ever expanding”? Kralkatorrik’s size doesn’t change as far as we know.

I meant in terms of his territory. If he did settle anywhere, I would think that given the Dragonbrand was made in mere moments, whatever his current residence is now, it must be fairly impressive.

1 vs 1 norn wins

full scale war charr wins…simple

Yeah… no. The Charr were unable to conquer the Norn, that is why they get along so well nowadays.

Seriously ? -_- you should read the topic …

“Although it is certain the Charr could have destroyed the Norn resistance if they but turned their entire army—or even one full legion—to the cause, warbands and smaller raiding parties could not overcome the individual strength of the Norn. These initial skirmishes taught both sides to respect the strength of the other.” (http://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/The_Movement_of_the_World)

Stated by lore :
-1 full legion = norns lose,
-small warband = norn win .

The question for a real war is already answered : Charrs win with 1/3 ( 1/4 in reality, but yeah flame is banned ) of their military force .

“Many expected the initial Charr expansion through northern Tyria to become a tide of blood that would crash upon the Shiverpeaks, drowning Charr and Norn alike. The reality proved different. When the Charr reached the foothills, the Norn drove them back with a single crushing blow, completely decimating every warband sent against them. "

Just the first wave, friend. The Norn are not exactly organized. If push came to shove and the Norn became united against the Charr, it would have been quite a different story. It was best that the Charr back down before they took on more than they could bear.

And ? that change absolutely nothing -_-

“Just the first wave, friend.” yeah charr only send a few warband, it’s also called reconnaissance in war.

Reconnaissance is usually followed by some manner of assault.

Very strong evidence, thank you for enlightening me, but that still doesn’t explain where the hey a 1000 foot dragon bent on corrupting the world would up and vanish to – without corrupting a danged thing on the way which seems to be his favorite hobby (aside from knitting and bowling, of course). With the utter lack of evidence as to where a god-like being of that caliber could possibly be aside from the aforementioned location, I am forced to assume that he is at the aforementioned location and the GW1 overlay is wrong in this case.

bullyrook.2165

Yeah, nothing definitive on his location… Oh, except for the massive splotch of Branded in the Crystal Desert map. I think he is holed up there, licking his wounds, and considering the weight of the situation.

That “massive splotch” is where he fled from at the end of Edge of Destiny. He didn’t continue making the Dragonbrand. It ends at Glint’s Lair.

And Kralkatorrik is not there.

Unless he returned after Destiny’s Edge left (and, I should note, the Zephyrites came and gone, given that they went to Glint’s corpse which would be right next to that “massive splotch of Brand” and thus Kralkatorrik would have been in eyesight yet no mention of the massive beast, rather a “hurry so the wrong hands don’t get it.”)

And you know this how? If you got this very exact info from a book, I should remind you that the books aren’t exactly spot on in terms of detail.

It’s pretty obvious from the map that the Dragonbrand ends at Glint’s Lair by overlaying it with the GW1 map. In Edge of Destiny, Glint’s Lair is where they confront Kralkatorrik – this is pointblank stated. Kralkatorrik flees and Destiny’s Edge has some time of moment’s rest after the battle at the place of the battle, as shown by Zojja crying over Snaff’s corpse within the battered and broken golem suit.

If you read the novel, it becomes pretty clear. The books may not be perfect in their detail, but they are a lot more than you give credit for.

So, you think Kralktorrik glassed an area roughly three times the width of the Dragonbrand for the purpose of killing 6 mortals and a lesser dragon, and then proceeded to fly south without turning the land beneath him to a new Dragonbrand? As for your data on Glint’s lair. Honestly, nothing in the GW1 map corresponds with the GW2 map perfectly. You are guessing. I personally think Glint’s Lair is a bit north of the splotch, possibly just at its edge.

Do Sylvari actually have sexuality?

in Sylvari

Posted by: bullyrook.2165

bullyrook.2165

@bullyrook: That is a fair point. It may be that Sylvari sexuality is merely an implanted desire given to them by the Dream in order for them to better relate to the other sentient races. But in the same way that real life sex is ultimately just to propagate the species, it doesn’t make the act any less awesome.

That’s how it is for animals.

Humans are romantic and sexual beings IRL and more often than not the act of propagating the species plays a distant second or even third in the equation to love and desire.

Many times it’s not a factor at all (IE some don’t want kids).

Sylvari are a deeply passionate and very emotional people (typically), and they’re very much capable of expressing love in the complete spectrum of humanity.

Sexuality is indeed a part of the sylvari experience, and it may well be for the reason you state; it makes them more able to relate to the other species of Tyria.

It’s not a foreign concept to them. In fact, they may make some of the more conservative of Tyria blush.

Lol, you are all quit humorous. But let’s face facts: humanity rarely has its priorities straight as far as when it comes to what’s good for the species. Our sexual practices are mostly offshoots of the desire to mate and breed and nothing more. This is true of pretty much every species on earth.

However, I could buy that sentient beings devoid of sexual attraction could develop an amorous relationship in term of close friendship and simply choose to engage in actions of physical closeness in order to express emotion and strengthen existing bonds. No, not strengthen so much as “lock” existing bonds. But this is a theory of love transcending sexuality, not very popular in today’s society.

Can Sylvari have siblings?

in Sylvari

Posted by: bullyrook.2165

bullyrook.2165

Doesn’t matter either way. To the Sylvari, every sibling they have, whether from the same pod or not, is a prospective mate. That said, I can only assume that they do not view the relationship between siblings in the same sense that we do.

Just a funny thought, but they may not comprehend the default reaction of other races when they are asked if a sibling is their mate.

Sylvari: “Are you two a mated pair?”
Human/Norn/Charr/Asura “No! She’s my sister!”
Sylvari: “What does that have to do with it?”

A-net has confirmed that sylvari are sexually active but lack the approrite organs to reproduce. Like all sylvari limbs, their “sexual organs” are simply imitations of human sexual organs made from plant pettles/stems/leaves/bark/vines/etc. wrapped to form a shape that produces a similar physical function. they look and operate similarly without he reproductive aspect.

Yup.

They have the appropriate organs in sylvari fashion. They function in all the ways they should, stopping short of actually being able to produce after their kind.

They’re sterile. Only the mother tree(s) can physically produce sylvari.
_

But yeah OP, the sylvari obviously have well defined genders. Male and female. They also happen to be the most uninhibited, though humans seem to be catching up.

The devs kinda gloss over the whole thing – seems that way to me anyway.

Not that they gloss over it. They had addressed it. They just can’t really sit down and devote so much time to the issue that it begins to be a thing.

The usual statement of “you can never prove a negative” applies.

However, the reasoning that originally lead to the theory being proposed is gone. You can modify it, but then we get to something like Carl Sagan’s invisible dragon – you’re reaching further and further to make it disprovable, and instead of letting the evidence lead you to a theory, you’re trying to force the theory just because you happen to like it.

I am fully familiar with the “invisible dragon” debate. It is without a doubt the most demeaning and cliche of all straw-man arguments. I have wasted far too much of my life combating this line of thought with limited success, mainly because those who use it also have “invisible dragons” of their own. I could go round and round with your circular reasoning, allowing you to lead me by the nose as you take me on a magical theme-park ride of lore “facts” sewn together with unicorn dreams and the tears of leprechauns, but instead I am going to wait it out. And when the Sylvari are revealed to be creations of the dragon – and trust me, they will – I shall turn to you with a hardy “Told ya!”

ArenaNet hasn’t retconned anything our characters saw with their own eyes, it’s just that things that we learned from second- or third-hand sources turned out to be wrong. Whether that’s truly retconning or not is up to the peanut gallery. Either way, though, if we play the “Arenanet might retcon” card, then there’s no point theorising about anything because no evidence can be trusted.

Regarding Scarlet – all we really know is that something was already inside her mind when she went into Omadd’s device. That does not mean that that ‘something’ is an inherent part of sylvari nature. It may be something that was pushed into the Dream by a source independent of the sylvari that Caera happened to have come into contact with. It could be that the dragon or its champion had been specifically targeting Caera, and Omadd’s device sabotaged her defenses. The ‘sylvari are descended from dragon minions and Omadd’s device unlocked that nature in Scarlet’ interpretation is only one, and as I’ve described above, all of the other evidence for the dragon minion hypothesis has been debunked.

Not really, all you’ve debunked is a PoV of those theories. I could easily modify them in manners that are difficult for you to disprove :P.

Which Elder Dragon is the strongest overall?

in Lore

Posted by: bullyrook.2165

bullyrook.2165

I get the sense that Zhaitan seems to be the weakest. He was given a perfect environment to grow and a massive advantage, but overplayed his hand. His strength stemmed from all things that were. He was a match for humans and their magic, but stood no chance against new technology and magics that he understood very little about. Basically, he was a zombie of a dragon: resilient, but physically unstable.

Kralkatorrik is the second newest dragon to awake. I think he his strength lies in the numbers of his enemies and the humility he gained from his encounter with Destiny’s Edge. If you send an army against him, you will fail every time because he can corrupt them with just his breath. If you send a guild in, he will have much greater trouble. Unlike Zhaitan, Kral has been given a chance to see the threat that the races of Tyria pose to him (a group of six plus his own champ nearly killed him). I believe this may give him a much needed edge when he fully recovers. It is likely that he will be fortifying his position and going after the individual heroes of Tyria instead of waiting for the assault. Even then, I’d say he is either the second weakest or the most unlucky of the dragons thus far.

Jormag is just the opposite of Kral. If you send an army, you’ll have much better luck than if you send individuals. I’d say that he has a way of getting inside an individual’s head and not only promising power but delivering on it as well. That is why the Kodan and the Norn – two highly prideful races – have such trouble dealing with him. I’d say that he is the third weakest overall.

Past the above three, it is hard to say. But I believe that Bubbles may be the third strongest. Not because he is any more powerful or tactful, but because he is immersed in his element. No matter what you try, you can’t draw him onto the land or into the sky. He has a very strong defense against the land-dwellers of Tyria.

I believe Mordremoth to be the opposite of Zhaitan. If the rest of his minions are anything like Scarlet, then we could be in a lot of trouble. He may be a dragon in a constant state of evolution, one that is impossibly adaptable. It really depend on what his exact powers are. But I’d guess that he is the second strongest, being the last to rise.

Primordus has the same home field advantage that Bubbles does and has had more than 200 years to fortify himself. First to rise, last to fall. Making him the strongest.

But we still don’t know if these are the only dragons. There may be more that even the Dwarfs were unaware of.

No, I’m more referring more to the ones that say they can’t relate to the NPCs in the story line because they are female and asking to that the next story line has less females and more men for that reason.

Women have endured centuries of not being represented and not having strong females to look up to, to having the women shown as being less than men. If men are uncomfortable with just one story in just one game not having a majority cast of men and the man not being the major lead person, maybe they need to consider why they are uncomfortable and feel it so necessary to ask for fewer women and more men.

And I am off for the night. If I can we can pick this up tomorrow. :-)

Blame biology and men who misunderstood it. Men have a natural compulsion to protect and provide for their mate and offspring. Sometimes we misunderstand this compulsion as possession and superiority. But I am sure it is more complicated than this layman’s overview.

I do have a good question. A sensible question, and I really hope you won’t get offended when I ask it. What is the evolutionary advantage of homosexuality, bisexuality, etc? Most things we support in our morals has some kind of advantage, but I have yet to see any conclusive data on this bit. There is the “Homosexual Uncle” argument: “an individual whom provides food and shelter but does not supply excess offspring.” But this feels a bit lacking when you apply it to the natural world, as not all creatures that exhibit homosexuality have instincts that influence them to care for others. And this argument does not apply to bisexuality in the least, as they may still have children. So far, it doesn’t seem very practical.

….That is what I was implying. When someone makes a statement such as “men don’t need more game heroes”, that statement excludes groups such as minority males, gay males, and males who don’t fit the “grizzled adult alpha male” standard for reasons of age, personality, or disability.

If someone were to say “grizzled alpha males don’t need more game heroes”, that is a completely different story. One must be careful about overly broad exclusionary statements. Hence the disagreement.

The tone of some of the comments in this, and similar threads, has brought to mind an account I read in a book about the first Star Trek and the people in it.

Star Trek was one of the first tv programs to have black people starring in it as regulars and not cameo roles. Previously to these shows, black people had stock roles in film as comedy relief, Step and Fetchit for example, not serious roles showing them as real people. They commonly were portrayed as ignorant and foolish.

The story I am thinking of concerned Uhuru. They received a fan letter for her and in it the writer praised her for being a good actress and had several other nice things to say about her. At the end though, he confessed that seeing black people on tv made him uncomfortable and he requested that she be removed from the show and a white person put in her place.

So how does this story relate to this thread? Suppose there was a story line with 4 black people and one white person, who wasn’t an intellectual giant, and there was a thread saying, I can’t relate to black people, they have to be white for me to relate to a story told by them. Next story line, please put in more white people. Also, make sure the white people are smarter, better, stronger than the one you have now.

I’m sure the people who are saying they are uncomfortable with so many women and who have trouble relating to them are perfectly sincere, but sexism and racism have some things in common, which they might wish to keep in mind. Women, like black people, are underrepresented in games and other places and when they are present they, like black people were, are often given caricature stock roles. When I as a woman, hear a man say that he can’t relate to a story having so many women and please give us more men, it does sound a bit like the “fan” writer asking for fewer scenes with Uhuru and more with white people.

Ahem Are you implying that any attempt to ask for additional well designed males in the current line-up should be construed as an act of sexism? I advise you to word your response very carefully.

Just popped in on the epilogue. No Sylvari hate, gratefully. However, I wouldn’t have pegged Jory as having something against the upper crust.

Hmm, not sure about that. Jormag promises power. The Norn crave making their legend, which is why they fall to it so easily.

What do the Sylvari fall prey to? As they are children, I would say fear and primal instinct.

That is, if I understood what you meant.

Well the good news is that they can’t use the “romantic interest might be dead but really isn’t” cliche in the next season. They’ve spent that nickel. That said, I hope no one dies.

You’re all over-thinking this, the entire Mr. E name is meant as a pun. Mister E = Mystery

This is what I get for ignoring Kas’s idle prattle. I should have caught that sooner.
