The very fact that an issue has been made of Jory and Kas’s relationship is a pretty clear indication that their relationship needs to be there. It’s only an issue if you make it one, and people seem pretty determined to do so. They’re another two characters who love each other. There doesn’t have to be a motive. No one questions whether the heterosexual relationships in GW2 are for brownie points or money or fanservice. Just the gay ones.

Jory is a person. Kas is a person. Jory and Kas love one another, gender be kitten ed. End of story.

Why do you feel compelled to antagonize those who don’t hold the same view as you? I’ll agree, many who advocate a binary gender model are homophobic. But that bigotry is just as steadfast in those who hold true to the spectrum gender model.

“The very fact that an issue has been made of Jory and Kas’s relationship is a pretty clear indication that their relationship needs to be there.”

Yeah, that is a very open minded view. I suppose you are right, culture should be diverse as long as it is a culture you agree with.

The sylvari took up a great deal of the game with your ideals. And I held my tongue out of respect – it was very well done. Various NPC’s showed up with your values. Held my tongue still and enjoyed playing a great game along side you all. With the addition of Jory and Kas I think the devs are just overdoing it at this point. I voice my opinion of this and you guys get aggravated over nothing. Bravo. Well, done. You have become what you dislike the most.

So, are we going to get off this subject, shake hands, and go kill some dragons?

Rurik died for nothing.

Ebonhawke still stands, and now prospers thanks to a new alliance with the Charr. The descendents of the people of Ascalon are living in Gendarran Fields, and were safe until the Centaur arrived. Rurik didn’t die for “nothing”, even if the future he secured for his people wasn’t a return to the past they lost. The people and legacy still live on, and that’s what’s important.

Hell, the implication the one wiki article gave about a prince of Kryta was Ebonhawke and the Black Citadel was heading for peace on their own long before Kralk rose… until a Krytan prince butted in and played soldier (making the fields run red with blood).

Rurik had no hand in the creation of Ebonhawk. Ironically, it was his half-crazed father that gave that order.

Read in the thread before the necro’ing posts. The old blog posts says

The krait have always been an unapologetically evil race. While we take pains in many instances to provide two sides to any story and to show that even evil races, cultures, and characters have good reasons for their actions, the krait were designed to be straightforwardly “black hat.” We approached their focus on religion very cautiously, knowing that the word “prophets” would bring to mind modern religious references. It is important to note that we in no way want to compare krait fanaticism to any real-world faith. The prophets of the krait are false religious figures invented by a ruling priest caste to maintain their control. No part of the krait culture or religion is based on, or intended to resemble, any real-world parallel.

There was a discussion on the interpretation of it – and one was that they’re not real in Tyria’s setting, the other being that they’re not comparable to a real religion.

Either way though, Angel McCoy had already stated elsewhere that since the blog post was written, some things were changed, since it was pre-release stuff.

Ah, I was going to say. Because that same post said that the obelisks had no mystical properties, now they are being compared to the bloodstone. I think they changed their mind on their direction.

I see no reason that humanity needs to be on equal footing with the charr. There may be some nostalgia from GW1 but I think we can all agree that this is a different game with a completely different zeitgeist.

All playable races have to be on an equal footing. Having multiple playable races, including the Charr, is the exact reason why they invented a Foefire.

Frans has a point. If the devs were not aiming for equal footing then they wouldn’t have made the Sylvari (a race only 25 years old) as powerful as the other four. However, I think they might have overdone it a bit with humans. In the course of 250 years, they lost nearly all their land and the proud and noble culture of Ascalon (you know, the nation all gw1 prophecy players start out in) is reduced to little more than a memory.

Basicly: everything your hero did in GW1 to save your homeland amounted to nothing. The Charr still won. Correction: the Flame Legion won and then the other Charr Legions claimed victory over them. Same difference, in my eyes though.

Rurik died for nothing.

ArenaNet brought forth the possibility that the Toxic Hybrid may or may not have been an actual Krait Prophet.

Considering that the Prophets were officially confirmed to be fabricated by the Oratuss one could say that the Toxic Hybrid is the first Prophet(it ascended in the tower like the ones in the legends) and depending one whether or not Toxic Alliance make more Towers of Nightmare it may be the last.

How do we know their prophets are definitely false? I may have missed something here.

Also, “Whats keeping people from going to check?” Travel times, most likely a STRONG fear/dislike of any long voyages (Rata Sum ships to LA, and even that was considered dangerous with Zhaitan). Zhaitan’s bone ships may still be around, just in fewer numbers. The Deep Sea dragon minions, Karka, or other ocean threats may be closer to the surface. Issues with sexuality in our world have historically been based on religion. It’s not hard to look back at a lot of points in history -cough- ancient greece -cough- where sexuality was completely a non-issue for people.

It stands to reason that since there is no religious doctrine that takes issue with sexuality that we can observe in Tyria – there is no issue.

I don’t understand why you’re all still having this meaningless argument.

You have neglected to take into account one important piece of data: if religious doctrines are not of divine origin, then that means that they are the product of personal philosophy – a self generated idea within a significant portion of humanity that requires no religious background to exist. These philosophies built Western Culture, and for a time they were among the strongest cultures in the world – and still are, though they have lost some of their glory as of late.

The discussion’s meaning – not argument – may be lost on you, but many of us have good reasons for carrying it on. In my case, I only carry it on to discourage polarization of the topic.

I don’t want to see the first character to say something in disagreement with Jory, Kas, or any others to be a member of a group we are meant to hate. Centaurs, Flame Legion, Krait, White Mantel, etc.

This is usually why the topic is avoided in games and other media, because it forces three choices on how to represent the discussion.

1): Show only one side and leave any disagreements in the shadows of the story, never to be confirmed and leaving it to fester in the forums.

2): Show both sides in a positive light and remain neutral, wasting screen time on a side-story dialog about peaceful disagreement.

3): Show one side and portray the other in a negative light, standing your ground on your beliefs but backhanding all who disagree.

I will gladly shut up if they give us an answer. If it is 2, I will be very happy – they could add 10 homosexual characters at that point and I wouldn’t care. If the are well designed, I’ll applaud them even.

If it is 3, I’ll just have to bite down hard and let the topic go. I’d just prefer not to be placed in the same boat as a bunch of homicidal maniacs – weird, huh?

Final note: Ancient Greece was not exactly a golden paradise, even you might shudder at some of their attitudes if ever your false vision of them was broken.

Also, although the wiki states it, I have never seen the actual source for Grenth being associated with destruction.

It’s ambient dialogue in DR, where a “necromancer” mentions Grenth being too morbid. To use the exact wording:

Citizen: Of all the gods, I think I like Grenth the least.
Citizen (2): Strange thing for a necromancer to say.
Citizen: He’s just so morbid. Death, destruction, darkness- it’s all too depressing.

Guild Wars 2 is an original work set in the same universe as the original Guild Wars. The core experience and themes are designed and allowed to be different. Otherwise, it would just be another expansion for Guild Wars.

It seems that most forum contributors are anti-human and pro-charr. Since many have argued that ultimately the humans of Tyria should be greatful for what they still have as per the events of the current game – GW2.

Since by natural law these said contributors claim that humanity is not entitled to any land they hold or had held in Tyria since they were invaders/outsiders.

I doubt that this is the intention of the writers or the intention of the IP owners. However they have effectively allowed said contributors to claim that all non-humans are entitled to claim all lands that humanity once held just for the sake of telling a better story.

In its re-writing of Tyrian history Arenanet have started the process of writing humanity out of Tyria in time for GW3 unless major re-balancing occurs.

Not Anti-human and Pro-Charr. Just not Pro-Human at the Expense of Everything Else. Humans have to fight for what they want to have, just like everyone else. Even then, they’re still one of the strongest and most populous races in Tyria. They’ve just been pared back to everyone else’s level for now. There’s no “entitling” at all. If anything, the entitlement is for humans believing they are owed and entitled to land they have proven incapable of holding. Your own argument is that non-humans are not entitled to claim any land they hold or have held in Tyria because they are not humans.

Careful, that sounded dangerously close to “might makes right”

This topic is a great showcase of double standards/hypocrisy.

It’s fine for humans to scream in rage over lost nations and/or homelands, and try to retake them.

However, it is NOT fine for other races (Centaurs, Charr, etc) to have the exact same feelings and try to (and/or successfully) take back their lands.

Ascalon had been humanity’s for some time. Not a Charr was left alive that could claim Ascalon to be their home, nor a human present that actually drove the Charr out.

The Charr invaded a human homeland to claim it as their own. Why? Because it was the homeland of their forefathers. Not the homeland of the Charr at that point in history, but the homelands of their forefathers. It is important to note that.

The Humans of the GW1 Ascalon had the only claim on that land because it was their homeland. Many generations had been born and died there, by definition, that makes it their homeland.

Now it is the Charr homeland again. During the reign of Humanity in Ascalon it was a Human homeland – it ceased to be the Charr homeland when every Charr that had been born there died.

Now that every Human that was born within the GW1 territories of Ascalon is dead, it is no longer the Human homeland. The Ascalonian territory known as the Fields of Ruin is a new Human homeland. Children born there have the only claim to the land – this is natural law.

In other words:

The Humans started a war that the Charr lost – generations of Humans were born in that land and never even saw a Charr to war with, Ascalon became a Human homeland.

The Charr started a war that the Humans lost – generations of Charr were born in that land and never even saw a Human to war with, Ascalon became a Charr homeland once more.

I know I am being redundant, but I am trying to get the point across by simplifying the matter.

Thanks to the treaty and the Dragons its over until a Charr or a Human gets too big for his britches. Period.

Nobody is saying the searing was warranted or right. Infact, a large chunk of Charr think of it as bad.

Flame legion is, and was bad guys. That’s the BIGGEST problem I see here and ingame (even among friends). People universally hate the charr, but in reality they just hate the flame legion actions.

And yet Pyre Fierceshot was an advocate of the Searing and was proud that his father had a hand in it?

And Pyre Fierceshot is a chunk of the Charr population?
Perhaps not a LARGE chunk think of the searing badly, but a number do. There is one in Diessa who speaks about it. Zalvax Brokenclaw

“It was originally a military outpost. During the war, the Flame Legion—murderous villains—started attacking settlements. Many Ascalonian citizens fled to Oldgate, but in vain. "
“The Flame Legion hit the outpost like a hurricane. They didn’t just kill inhabitants, they busted down the walls and tore the place apart. I guess the ghosts here don’t realise we’re not the Flame Legion. "

Pyre was the founder of the revolt, who would hate the Flame Legion more than him? No, I get the sense that the Searing is a cultural point that most Charr gloss over. Like it is taboo to mention that the Flame Legion were the only reason that Ascalon fell.

If any Charr do mention it, they only do so to put some fear into “mice”, or else simply leave out that the Flame Legion were the driving force in it. Remember, the Charr are political creatures too. They are very likely to change their history simply to maintain their pride.

In the eyes of the average Charr, the list goes like this:
Your Legion
The other two legions
Other Races
Flame Legion
Humans

I will agree, there are some more worldly Charr that put humans in the same bracket as “other races”, but not many. Remember, it was only a few centuries ago that they were eating humans. We have no idea if this practice is still in place or how prevalent it is.

Actually, I was thinking that maybe the Dragons (lore-wise) did name themselves. They simply absorbed knowledge of the local inhabitance and built a name that best suited them from the combination of dialects. That would explain why they have no linguistic similarities between them. It could very well be that the dragons are exactly like the gods, only that their power is what happens when it is left unchecked. Snaff is described as acting for everything the Kral lacked in order to control him. Had he been successful, would we have seen the first asura deity?

Course, IIRC, Krait and Naga aren’t related at all, but Naga used to be good until the Jade wind happened (I forget if it drove some leaders insane or simply reduced their population enough to the point they got paranoid.)

But that would put them in the same boat as the Tengu, correct? We still have no real understanding of the Krait as we have never heard any substantial dialogs from them.

I think what Wanderer meant in saying that is that no mortal can become as powerful as a god without replacing one of the Six Gods. I.e., Gaheron would never reach true godhood.

That is untrue. The wiki claims that Baelfire was well on his way. It is very possible he would have succeeded if given enough time. You keep claiming that there can never be more or less than six gods, but how did they become gods in the first place? I am of the mind that the power each god possesses was formed independent of its current host somewhere in the Mists and was then manifested in a mortal being, making them immortal until someone with plot-armor comes along.

Dragons, who are they

Incorrect, they are worshiped as true gods, but seeing as they played no role in the creation of Tyria – even though gw1 lore said otherwise – or any of its known races that makes them no different than exceptionally powerful demons, giants, dragons, or shiny rocks.

What defines “god” then?

Because, in the GW context, the best definition we have for god is “unaging being of immense power who, though can be supplanted, their power cannot be destroyed.” This is what the Six Gods are, at least. But what defines a god? The Six Gods are more than most polytheistic gods – a polytheist god is usually defined best as “an unaging being of immense power whom rules a higher realm (e.g., Olympus) or the afterlife” – the Six Gods are this and more (their power cannot be destroyed).

Good question. But Abaddon was destroyed after his power was taken from him. Although the powers they possess may be mighty and indestructible, the beings that claim to be gods in this game are no different than a wizard with a magic staff. Only that in this case the “staff” is their own godly powers. In other words: these are simple human-like beings charged with a divine energy from an unknown source. We see an example of this in Baelfire, whom was close to ascending to the level of one of the Six. If he had succeeded in accumulating the power to match one of them, would that have made him a true god? I think not. As is, the Dragons are closer to being gods than the Six.

Nothing says that Melandru, Dwayna, or Abaddon’s predecessor don’t have predecessors.

But nothing hints that they do, either. So why presume something exists when we hold no evidence to the contrary?

Furthermore, the existence of winged female humanoid statues within the Rift (the center of all things with no sense of time progression), while the oldest and leader of the gods (Melandru and Dwayna respectively) share that depiction (winged female humanoids). This hints that if there was anything that could be called the “original Six Gods” – it’d be winged female humans, ergo Dwayna and Melandru most likely amongst them.

Very possible. But that still doesn’t convince me that these two are among the first of their kind.

Where did you get that info?

Prophecies manual. The very first piece of lore on the Mists we ever learned.

Before there were humans or dwarves, before there were even worlds or the stars that light the night sky, there was but one thing in the universe—the Mists. The Mists touch all things. They are what binds the universe together, past, present, and future. They are the source of all good and evil, of all matter and knowledge. It is said that all forms of life, no matter how simple or complex, can trace their origins back to this one place.

Key words “it is said”. Need I remind you that in GW1 it was said that the Six created Tyria, but that turned out to be false. From the sounds of it, I’d be more willing to accept the idea that the Mists have a will of their own.

My point exactly. What if something created and named the dragons? We know the Six are not true gods, they are only beings of power that seemed to have risen in the wake of an older pantheon. Could the case be the same for the dragons?

Not everything has to be made by something more powerful.

True, but not all things are the creation of random chance.

And the Six are true gods – gods in the polytheist context, not the monotheist context.

Incorrect, they are worshiped as true gods, but seeing as they played no role in the creation of Tyria – even though gw1 lore said otherwise – or any of its known races that makes them no different than exceptionally powerful demons, giants, dragons, or shiny rocks.

And only half of the gods are indicated to have “risen in the wake of an older pantheon” – nothing says Melandru, Dwayna, or Abaddon’s predecessor had predecessors (or Lyssa, Balthazar, and Dhuum for that matter, but Lyssa’s outright stated to have “lost origins,” Balthazar has a half-brother, and Dhuum looks too human IMO – so I think that only Dwayna and Melandru are part of the original pantheon, which I hold because there are statues of female winged humanoids throughout the Rift, which is the center of all things).

Nothing says that Melandru, Dwayna, or Abaddon’s predecessor don’t have predecessors.

And nothing really prevents the Elder Dragons to have been born directly from the Mists – which is outright stated to be the inevitable origin of all things (all geneologies can trace themselves back to someone or something born from the Mists, basically).

This stems into adoption issues in suitability (lets steer away from that treacherous water, quickly). And the default bisexuality/homosexuality that the devs have instilled in some female alts – rather limits roleplaying if you ask me.

Still, you have to remember: birds of a feather flock together. Just because close friends of some player characters hint that, it does not mean that all good Krytans are on the same page.

For the record, I am only arguing cultural disagreements being exhibited in Krytan politics, not the moral implications behind said disagreements. More than anything, I do not want a character like Lord Beetlestone on my side if a stance is made on the subject in-game. I think I may lose my lunch if my values were compared to those xenophobic misogynistic hatemongers.

What Would Your Character Have Said to Jory?

“A fearsome death howl, from a fearsome foe, the likes of which has never been seen before!”

“Whatever, it was big, now its dead”

“Show some respect! Now collect the head, Lord Beetlestone must have his newest trophy.”

Just the powers were useless? Try every single NPC in the game except Taimi.
