Tough matchup

The problem with the way the current setups have it is that it is nearly impossible to retake positions that have been in the hands of the enemy for a while. As we have been pushed back to our spawns, where ET has setup siege to keep us hemmed in (god forbid anybody should take the side routes), it’s difficult to move a group out without having a much larger zerg from ET come wipe that group out. Meanwhile, the front of our spawn is no easier to get out of. We cannot hold onto a camp or tower for any length of time, just on sheer numbers. Our group of 10 will take a supply camp, we’ll get attacked by a group of 20-30. We’ll try raiding, just to keep them guessing, run into a roving pack of 20.

We had a good foothold in the SoS BL yesterday. I spent a large portion of my money on upgrading Etheron Hills, SoS was pushing ET on their own map. I figured things would be similar come morning. Wake up 7 hours later, and we have basically been wiped from the maps. There’s no way that’s simply a coordination thing. We had the coordination. we lacked the people

we haven’t seen a response from Anet on this topic yet. Which is actually surprising, considering how well they’ve done so far keeping us players in the loop. This either means they are looking into fixes and too busy to respond (god i hope it’s this) or they don’t intend to do anything about it.

My personal opinion: Retaliation is too strong in WvW

There’s absolutely no sense in having retaliation do anything to a siege weapon. Siege weapons are just that… weapons for sieging. Retaliation is not. Well placed siege is what makes this game fun. It’s called strategy. 1 single skill should not negate that.

the worse part is that it’s not a computer issue. I just bought a new gaming pc, spent close to $2000 on it. I have this issue as well, regardless of settings. I can play WvW on max settings without dropping below 30+fps. Even on low settings, this still happens.

WvW queue on high demand servers - my two cents

Unfortunately, that’s a problem that comes with being on a high-pop, popular server. Is it fair to keep allowing more and more people to jump off their servers to join the “winning” server, thus kittening WvW anymore? Just to allow your 1 friend to come play with you? I’m not saying you shouldn’t be allowed to play with your friends. But continuing to allow transfers to the high-ranked wvw servers has caused some massive imbalances that the players don’t want to fix themselves. They want to stay on the winning server, and complain that everybody is picking on them.

This happened with a catapult and an arrow cart I put down to have built today, after retaking a tower. I ran 2 supply runs from the nearest supply camp, and on my 3rd run back, i ran into some opposition. Managed to skirt past them, relatively unharmed. Get back in the keep to drop my supply into the catapult, and it’s gone. Go check on the arrow cart, it’s gone too. They were down for maybe 10 minutes.

We pushed back on IoJ last night. We got a few organized groups together on the SoS borderlands. Pushed well, defended well. Spent all my money upgrading Etheron Hills. Logged on this morning, and we hold part of EB and part of our own borderlands. All the effort put in last night to simply get a foothold was wiped out in less than 7 hrs.

And once again, big guilds doing all they can to win will ruin this game with their actions, and then complain again that “another fail-mmo can’t do it right”. But by trying to be the best all the time, their own actions are going to cause the game to die. Very sad.

The argument of "Well, daytime US is nighttime AUS/EU, so it evens out. NO. It’s a US server, so during the day, the matches are competitive at least. There is the population to back it up. When one server has a huge population imbalance at night, it doesn’t even out with a huge population imbalance during the day. If it did, it would constantly swing back and forth, but it doesn’t. You might make headway during the day, but any progress you did make gets wiped out at night.

Last night on IoJ, we started a small group that slowly got bigger. We hooked up with a few more organized guilds and started getting the ball rolling on the SoS borderlands. I spent most of my money upgrading Etheron Hills. We were pushing rather well against ET, and mostly leaving SoS alone, figuring they would help pressure ET. It looked like we had at least secured our foothold for the week to work from.

Wake up this morning and…. gone. All of it. We control part of EB, and part of IoJ borderlands. All the work and money that went into Etheron Hills vanished overnight. Want to know why nobody upgrades things? Everybody said it was the 24 hr matches. No, it’s the losing everything overnight that feels like you’re watching somebody burn your own money for their enjoyment. And you’re expected to call it fun.

There needs to be a population ratio limit placed on each of the borderlands, so that none of the servers will ever outnumber the other to any huge advantage. This would probably cause queues on some servers to reach astronomical lengths, but it might also give those huge servers a reason to spread their forces out. The queues don’t work properly to give incentive to move, as they currently stand. There are still queues on the “winning” servers, who continue to dominate. If they can’t even get part of their whole group in, maybe they’ll consider the consequences of constantly rolling over your opponents. Sure, it’s fun to win. But is it fun to win a game that’s gonna die because you “have” to be good at it? Can’t some of these huge alliances see the negatives to their plans? They will kill this fun game called WvWvW, just because they are willing to wait hours in queue’s and call themselves “good”. Maybe split your guilds up, and fight against each other? Then you could actually call yourself good. Not to discredit the organization that it takes to do what you do, but maybe think beyond your own server. Look at preserving this great game so it can thrive instead of killing it because you want to faceroll.

SoS is currently attacking us, just throwing a big zerg around the IoJ borderlands. Obviously, they care more about the short term benefits (xp + karma) than for actually winning the game, or even taking the fight to ET.

Idea to solve WvW imbalances.

I play on the Isle of Janthir server. We’re not horrible at WvWvW. We do occasionally get steamrolled. Ok, lately, it might be more than occasionally. This is where the problem is, I think.

We did not too bad at the beginning. We were at least marginally close for most of the games we didn’t win. As time went on, we started getting decimated. Now, it seems like we’re always going up against servers that roll over us with no problems. I ask myself why, and the only answer i can come up with is “Free Transfers”.

I understand that everybody wants to be on a winning server. I don’t understand the desire to be on a server that has control of the map within an hour or two of restart, pushing the other servers out of every zone. There can’t be much to do after that.

We all understand the Alliances that make up great servers. They work hard to get everybody together, working together, and controlling the map. But that often leads to imbalances in population as the other servers feel the futility of trying to control even a small portion of the map. People start quitting when they realize they can’t win, which is unfortunate.

The other issue is the servers with high “Night time” population (us night time). The population imbalance at night can often swing the score so far onto one server, that you cannot make up the difference during the day. that’s because few servers will control everything during the day, the way some servers can at night. Is this a problem that should be forced onto those “night time” players on the high end servers? yes and no.

It’s not fair to punish them in their point tally. It’s a convoluted system that creates too much confusion, and makes that particular server feel… discriminated against? I’m not sure how to explain that. No players want to be treated differently because they (or their server) is good at WvW.

If the biggest problem in WvW is population imbalance, couldn’t we somehow start “forcing” servers to balance our their populations at a given time by making each borderland/EB have a population ratio based on the lowest pop server? Not a 1:1:1 ratio, but something like 0.7/0.9/1.0 for #1/#2/#3 server? or a max of 1.3 or 1.4 of the lowest pop server? I imagine then that larger guilds that want to concentrate on WvW would transfer servers to ones without large queue times?

As guilds transferred, and the population at particular times (mostly night U.S) evened out amongst servers, wouldn’t WvWvW become more competitive?

I love WvWvW, and would love to see it succeed. As it stands, with so many lopsided fights, it’s certainly not as entertaining as it could be. I much prefer the close fights, where there are great battles raging across all 4 maps. Way more fun than when we steamroll the competition. I like being able to jump into a map and knowing that i can make a difference somewhere. I despise jumping into a map and knowing that at most, I can take a guard out, maybe a supply camp. Only to watch control of it revert right back.

Or maybe make keeps/towers/camps that have been under control by 1 faction for a long period of time automatically give a certain amount of points towards your server score? Much like the bonus xp from mobs that haven’t been killed in a while.

I’m just throwing ideas out there, none of my numbers are concrete, simply placeholders. I don’t do math for stuff like this. This is more of a brainstorming session than anything.
