Fractal weapons skins for pristine relics?

I, too, support the concept of less RNG, more “working toward a reward.” While I despise grindy gameplay, I appreciate the concept of working toward a specific choice of prizes. Legendaries (with the exception of getting a precursor) are like this: a specific series of recipes for a specific weapon reward.

I don’t want six skins of a Fractal shortbow when I want a dagger or a shield.

D/D Thief vs. S+S/LB Warrior

I’ve recently been playing a Thief in my WvW havoc team. The night before this post I wandered out on my own to complete a few achievements for the WvW meta – particularly the ruins. There I encountered a warrior using sword+sword/longbow.

The warrior was exceptionally "skilled, " in the sense they understood my build very well. They spammed their autoattack while turning rapidly to prevent me from getting a Backstab. Additionally, they understood when to blind me with Longbow 4 and when to evade, which was quite frequent.

I encountered them twice. The first threw me for a loop as I was unable to land a majority of my Cloak and Daggers and their condition damage was quickly eating away at my health – while they remained above 90%, easily. On my second encounter, I managed to get them to 50% on a few occasions, but the fight was still in their favor for the duration of the encounter. In general, it was a good fight and I commend the warrior for understanding how to counter me, but looking to improve my game to avoid further defeats from this particular build.

Here is the build I was using at the time (standard 30/30/10 D/D):

I suspected the Warrior used this build:

Any advice and feedback on how to approach a Warrior build like this is greatly appreciated. Thank you!

Climbing tips

in The Nightmare Within

deepwinter.9015

And these are mine:

First Floor:
Downed – Standard assist to revive. (i.e. light to moderate threat to the assisting player; common sense).
Dead – Standard revive if combat is being managed or after combat.

Second Floor:
Downed – Assist if nearby and not in immediate danger.
Dead – Revive after combat.

Third Floor:
Downed – Revive if downed in a “safe area.” Party members priority. Use crowd control or stealth if available. All others are expendable.
Dead – “Better luck next time, buddy!”

My group and I don’t waste time on the Third Floor, where its extremely hazardous to stand your ground. We push toward each antitoxin sprayer, fight off whatever managed to follow us, then press on.

If you’re the type of person who insists on killing everything on that floor coughWarriorscough, then by all means stick around. If the fumes don’t get you, the ever increasing veteran spawns will.

Tower rules inconsistencies

in The Nightmare Within

Posted by: deepwinter.9015

deepwinter.9015

  • Condition transferral sometimes refuses to recognize torment
  • Mobs unaffected by Mesmer down-state clone and go for the mesmer 100%
  • Fear only pushes you in the direction of the nearest ledge no matter where you are in relation to a mob (if there is one, thx hallucination!)
  • Projectiles frequently go through reflect bubbles/mechanics
  • Mobs seem to know when you are stomping and can force their knockback off cooldown to counter. There is no way a single mob can have 3 knockbacks chained.

Is anyone else experiencing these scenarios?

1. I don’t know about transferring, but I know I’ve cleared my Torment conditions with consistency as both a Ranger and a Thief through various skills an traits.

2. I’ve been feared off ramps, into mines, into walls and down clear paths. As mentioned above, most of this place is on narrow pathways so this is a matter of statistics.

3. Not all balls of death are defined as “projectiles” in this game. Some flying objects can be reflected, others cannot. The Watchknight’s laser attack is apparently not a projectile as it has never been reflected in past encounters.

4. Mobs seem more intelligent in this patch and perhaps they are, but often times they’re set to spam their abilities. Some will appear to evade smartly, others will evade when there’s no one attacking them at all. Again, another matter of statistics.

This is not true. It was confirmed not to be true by many others. All key parts drops at any level.

You’re half right. Yes, the three key parts have a chance to drop in all areas of the tower; however, it says right on the keys themselves that they have an increased chance to drop in their respective areas.

Why would you think gender defines sexuality in this game? There are several examples of same sex relationships, and I don’t recall sexuality being an option in the character creation phase. :\

Nevertheless, a lot of Personal Story comes into this Living Story event. I’ve even seen screenshots of Tybalt fighting Order of Whispers players. So that’s a good thing.

Amazing Update - I'm Genuinly Shocked

in The Nightmare Within

Posted by: deepwinter.9015

deepwinter.9015

I, too, was pleasantly surprised by this content update. I went in with a party of guild members. None of us knew what to expect. Three members of my party are pretty inexperienced with GW2 mechanics and that certainly frustrated things when we got to the Third Floor, but otherwise it was a great, open dungeon experience!

I’m a bit baffled by the claims that this is another zergfest. Not once during my long trips up did I see any encounter that required more than a handful of people (10 at the most). On the First and Second Floors, most of the mobs are non-elites or Veterans with low health/armor. We encountered a few Champions for the Group Events, but most of what we encountered died pretty easily to a group of 10.

I believe, with the way the game scales to the number of people nearby, the Tower would be worse with a zerg, with mobs scaling in number and health/armor to match difficulty.

Frankly, I enjoy this update and its one of the few that has me looking forward to it after work.

[SPOILERS] The Sylvari are not minions

Every race of Tyria is corruptible by the Dragons, save the sylvari. That makes them quite a big threat to the Dragons – unless one of them found a way to corrupt them.

The sylvari are physically immune to Dragon corruption from the other Dragons, but what if the last one thought outside the box? Instead of corrupting their bodies, it corrupted their hearts and minds. This asymmetrical approach would find the weakness of the otherwise impervious sylvari and be the Dragons’ solution to the “sylvari problem.”

This would be brilliant if it came to pass, but given the current villain of the story (which many of us are just waiting to “Die! Die! Die!”), I expect to be disappointed. :\

If you’re trying to push in with the zerg as a Thief, you’re gonna have a bad time.

See that upper level off to the right of his zerg? Kill him

Its your job to find the staff Elementalist in the back and drop her sorry kittens, before her buddies know what happened to their water fields!

Its your job to pick at the heels of a zerg before they collide with your allied zerg.

Its your job to herd those kittens into a false sense of security, to put them so off-balance, to make them so focused on you that they don’t see the Warrior coming up on their blindside to smash them into the dirt!

All of that would be awesome if the Thief excelled at it, but it doesn’t.

We would need a lot more move speed and evasion for that to work consistently.

Perhaps that’s how things work in your league, but I have great success in my Gold league hunting backline casters.

Then again, I work with a team of people on voice chat and have a partner thief to pick off targets. Scattering the sheep is just as much our job as slaughtering the strays. If our teammates get the stomp instead of us, then we set up the next lamb.

Before the season, my team didn’t run any thieves. The first week we introduced two (myself and my partner) and we’ve been crushing groups twice our size – in no small part because of the Thief’s excellent ability to harass casters and scatter enemy positions.

The female heavy chest looks awesome – finally another good chest for female heavy users (but I don’t need it – my warrior is male.) Out of curiousity, for the people complaining about revealing, “unprotective” heavy armor for females – do you at least play a Norn? or larger, more muscular human female? Because “bad @#$” full coverage heavy armor on one of the tens of thousands of the scrawny human (or even Sylvari) female warriors running around is just silly.

That’s a horrible stereotype and you should be ashamed of it. The Human T3 heavy armor is full coverage and there are plenty of woman in real life who can wear armor like it. I’m not talking runway models, I’m referring to women, like those in Tyria, who commit themselves to train for combat. Go to a Ren Faire and you’ll find average looking woman wearing heavy armor like the men and are just fine with it.

Regarding Plot and Lore

in Tower of Nightmares

deepwinter.9015

When it’s a question of investing hundreds/thousands of hours into a product; if the company doesn’t pay heed to the players soon enough in their demands and requests, the players won’t hang around to see it through. Anet doesn’t have the luxury of saying; oh, just wait a few years and see.

MMOs come out all the time, when GW2 gets dull (for the player base), it’s over; and the window of opportunity to meet requests for including GW1 lore and embellish it further and tie it in with GW2 is now. I agree, we don’t get to or need to dictate timetables or actual plot points, but dev’s simply being aware and not delivering on those expectations within reasonable time means heads will turn elsewhere.

When Wildstar/TESO land spring 2014, and EQNext/Landmark drops… how many players will still be in GW2? (I will, because I’m currently in the “see it through” bracket, but I want to see elder dragons, Mursaat, Cantha/Elona, Crystal Desert, etc. – a year-long LS as the current one that I don’t feel tell a coherent story is wearing on my patience because I NEED GW2 to deliver on story/lore).

All this and a bag of chips. Well said, Dondarrion!

Big Red Arrow:
All damage is redirected toward nearest Thief or Engineer. If nether profession is present, damage is directed toward the nearest Thief of Engineer in a random borderland. If no Thief or Engineer is online, Warriors have increased damage by 33% until a Thief or Engineer logs in.

Generally any build with 30 points in Critical Strikes is great for PvE, but your kitten nal (“a stock of weapons;” thanks forum censorship!) should include a Sword, one or two Daggers, at least one Pistol, and a Shortbow.

Sword/Dagger is great for clumps of trashmobs as the Sword’s auto cleaves.

Dagger/Dagger is your bread and butter Backstab/Single-target weapon.

Dagger/Pistol can have its uses on certain encounters or areas (i.e. stealthing through areas of tightly packed mobs).

Pistol/Pistol may be used on a single target that must be kited or best fought at a distance.

Sword/Pistol is niche but may be used in certain encounters (I use it for Subject Alpha to evade all attacks).

Shortbow is your go-to weapon for burst AoE damage and escape/utility. Its Blast finisher makes it King for group play (low health + water field = happy Party members).

As a player who started out as a Ranger, I felt I was in the same boat of “everyone can do things better than me.” After many trials and errors to find a way for the Ranger profession to work for me, I finally began rolling alts of different professions.

Today I have an 80 of every profession. I researched builds for each of them that interested me. I found plenty of strengths and weaknesses with each class and even developed a greater appreciation for what my Ranger can do well!

Now I play a Guardian for Dungeons/Fractals, a Mesmer or Thief for WvW, a Necromancer for maniacal laugh-inducing AoE conditions and control and a Warrior to farm Orr with (the Warrior profession ended up being my least favorite, to my surprise). I also went back to my Ranger and consider her my “main,” capable of doing everything generally well (especially open world content).

The moral of the story is that everyone is better at something, the grass is always greener, etc. I highly recommend trying out different profession and looking up different builds for each. YouTube has a wide collection of players roaming in WvW with various classes, and many of them can be entertaining and give you some idea. If you do this, I’ll promise there will come a day when you’ll look back on your Thief and think: “It wasn’t that bad.”

I was really excited for this patch...

in Tower of Nightmares

Posted by: deepwinter.9015

deepwinter.9015

The woman in the trailer says “whispered promises…” which could very well be how Scarlet is luring the Krait into perhaps believing she’s the Prophet, she could perhaps appear to them in a different form – maybe a holographic Krait resembling a Krait Prophet – so even if the Krait are xenophobic, they might not be aware it’s her. And of course, the prophet comes with armies and weapons (Aetherblades + Nightmare Court and their twine-tech technology) so to them that prophecy is fulfilled well enough to buy in on the ruse.

If she’s involved…I’d hope that’s how…
Except instead of making anyone work together with anyone she just uses the fake prophet to get the Krait riled up and building this monstrosity and gathering them all together, right in the middle of Tyria. We can have the PC’s try to breach the tower but utterly fail, only to discover in the melee and release of the mesmer veil that there is an aetheric anomaly over the Giant’s Passage. Upon investigation we discover a similar veil high up that is hiding several Aetherblade ships holding position. The Lion Guard, fresh off their TA assault move in high gear with the PC for an aerial intercept to attempt to board and confiscate the ships. We move through the ships to reach the last one where the PC reaches the captain’s cabin of the last ship alone. Enter cut scene, we enter a room empty but for a few odd devices and a chair facing out the rear window. She leaps up and welcomes you, grasping you by the shoulders and taking you aback. She speaks quickly and excitedly about how the Krait are just perfect the way they are, so wonderful and convenient. She shows us how she has been monitoring the fake prophet she set up and gloats about it. At this point our character interjects, questioning what she is going to do with the prophet. She turns to the pc, seriously this time and just says “nothing”. At that moment the prophet being viewed withers into branches and moss as the Krait attendants look on in shock. Scarlet pushes us away and moves towards the wall, “have fun!” and pulls a lever on one of the odd devices in the room. The floor under the PC opens up and we fall down, landing atop the Krait tower that the ship had maneuvered over. We watch the ship sail off, lionguard being cast off the side of the ship before it departs. We are left on the the top of the Krait tower now, their blamed culprit for the loss of their prophet and the focus of their rage. We hold them off and are eventually rescued by another Lion Guard ship.
Living World moves on with Krait attacks all over Kessex, Caledon, and Bloodtide. The Krait clearly making their way towards Lion’s Arch and Pale Tree simultaneously.

Ofc, nothing like that will happen and everything will be of no consequence. As usual.

Not to mention a major flaw, or rather inconcisetency with your story: the player is the centralized figure in this scenario. Never gonna happen. Why?

I’ll give you two reasons. No, make that three:

- Kormir
- Traherne
- Ellen Keil

ArenaNet never gives the player character any credit (Traherne/Keil), nor do the player characters ever get what they fight so hard for (Kormir). In the above story, Scarlet recognizes us as a “thing.” Never gonna happen.

Still, lovely idea. Would’ve been fun; but, as you said, it’ll never happen.

why dont people go p/d

in Thief

Posted by: deepwinter.9015

deepwinter.9015

In the higher tiers, most players run active and/or passive condition removal. In addition, a great number of players are running Melandru runes and Lemon Poultry food to reduce condition duration significantly (Warrior’s may also use Berserker stance to shed conditions instantly). P/D is a good harasser but hardly puts enough pressure like a D/D, D/P or S/D Thief can, and most of their damage can be mitigated or removed.

While I enjoy the Ricochet, its no substitute for piercing shots. Targets will often get between you and the target you’re attempting to stack conditions on. With Ricochet, you have no control over where the shots go – which is fine for power builds but falls apart for condition ones.

With the large number of players and tremendous amount of condition cleansing going on in WvW, P/D just isn’t as favorable.

Realization: Rogues are Solo Class

in Thief

Posted by: deepwinter.9015

deepwinter.9015

Watch a nature documentary about wolves. Then you will understand how Thieves function best in team-oriented PvP.

My WvW team has recently requested my change from a Mesmer to a Thief. While the support of the Mesmer is still needed, our team lacked severely in damage (most of us were either support or bunker built).

My guild leader plays a Hammer Warrior. He and the other Warriors and Guardians play the frontline. While he and the rest of the guild pushes through an enemy group, I skirt around the side and pick off the stragglers, whittling down the enemy numbers quickly. When I finally rejoin my guild, I’ll look for any players my guild leader has knocked down and finish them off. He now jokes that his tooltip should read:

“Backbreaker: Knock down your foe. Summon [a thief] to finish off your target.”

Thieves are not well suited for frontline offense or defense, they’re skirmishers. While that often implies “solo class,” they play a necessary role in “herding” enemy forces and picking off the weakest of the pack – like wolves do.

I’m very comfortable with my traits and the D/D gameplay in PvP (though I know P/D is all the rage).

My first concern is keeping up with targets on the move. I feel like I can’t stick to a target without Swiftness or Signet of Shadows, especially more mobile builds.

My second concern with is whether the drop in 6% crit damage and -60 total stats (Divinity Runes) worth getting the Traveler’s set (Note: I’m currently using Ruby Orbs until I finalize my decision).

Any suggestions and explainations would be appreciated. Thank you!

Last Train for Ranger class

I have one of every class at 80 in full exotics and some with full Ascended. Hell, I even remade my Ranger character into a Thief, but I’ve kept both in the hope Ranger will get better someday.

With that said, I’ve positioned myself ready to jump this train and abandon my Ranger forever. This ride sucks. :\

Constructive feedback for new TA path

To add to a few bugs observed during my playthrough:

Clockheart:
- Unusual teleporting around hologenerators (after they’ve been destroyed).
- Being thrown by Clockheart toward hologenerators may cause unusual teleporting (see above).
- If downed inside the middle area, unable to teleport to target location (Thief and Mesmer downed abilities).
- Charged floor panels sporadically remained charged after a failed attempt until Clockheart’s armor is removed/reset.

As noted above, it would be ideal for Clockheart to completely reset after a failed attempt, especially when considering that party members are forcibly teleported into the area when the boss is engaged.

Otherwise, the encounter is great, challenging and fun! An excellent replacement of the old Forward/Up path (to hell with Fyonna)! My party was especially grateful that Clockheart didn’t have an unreasonable amount of heath. The pace felt right and we felt we were making progress when we needed to burst damage. I would love to see more encounters with “phases” like this between bursting and control to make it engaging but not grindy.

Thanks, Anet!

TA F/U path is being removed

My, my, are MMO players complaining that their content is being replaced with newer content? This is quite a shock, considering every MMO has, at some point, replaced content with newer content.

Godforbid the horribly buggy (no pun intended) and neigh impossible Spider boss at the end of F/U was replaced with something (hopefully) far more interesting, challenging and GASP! rewarding!

Or are you all crying because A) you’re looking for something to complain about and/or B) you’re all Nightmare Court RPers from Team Fyonna?

Get over yourselves and either enjoy the game or go someplace else.

Is It A Good Time To Be a Ranger

Ranger was my first character. I’ve begrudgingly considered it my main because its my only character with World Completion.

In the past two months, however, I’ve really enjoyed the changes, particularly to the power builds using Longbow and Greatsword. Its not quite there yet, lacking a lot of synergy with utilities like other professions, but its getting there. Slowly.

If I had to choose a “go to” class for what I mainly do (WvW), I’d have to pick my Mesmer. Not the best in terms of burst damage, but it has a lot more synergy with various traits, weapons and utilities than the Ranger presently does.

I, too, was really impressed by ArenaNet’s gambit from the get-go. I did not, however, expect so many rage quitters. Its laughable how a fictional election (based on a single Fractal) could spur so much hate.

If the self-proclaimed hardcore Gnashblade Abaddon supporters really loved Guild Wars they wouldn’t have quit over a single Fractal.

The human gods are extremely relevant to GW2. That should be easy to see.

The Elder Dragons are even moreso, since the Gods have left and the Dragons are clear and present. The majority voted, one way or the other, to have a 10-minute Fractal based on the Reactor and the studies that were happening therein about the Elder Dragons. CoE covers so little about the Inquest’s study; I hope the Fractal covers more, but I digress.

Now is the time for the minority to make a huge fuss and the majority to get what they voted for. That is what happened – deal with it.

The fall of Abaddon from Godhood is not in Guild Wars 1. It predates GW1 prophecies by 1000 years, in fact 1079 years.

Then petition for a full-fledged dungeon about it, instead of a 10-minute Fractal that you MIGHT get on a run. Gnashblade Abaddon supporters seem to be hardcore GW1 fans that are just chomping at the bit for any piece of lore from their “hayday.”
