So what’s your counter to 4 trebs placed on the edge of the borderland garrison, bombarding the north east gate of the Bay fortress, short of taking said garrison?

part of this kind of pvp, of traditional old school mmo pvp(as opposed to the wow era of fps mode maps for mudflated gear) is strategy, and figuring out foryourself, or as a guild or alliance, how to counter w/e your enemy has upped the ante with.

so while i’m not interested in giving you the answer you want, i will teach you how to get such answers:

brainstorm among your guildies or among your alliance’s tacticians and be creative, be willing to risk being wrong about things, think outside the box, and don’t give up(but know when to retreat).

the answer may not always be obvious, but asking devs to nerf this or that or hold your hand in any way is never the answer in this style of pvp.

once devs start holding our hands, wvw becomes another wow arena carebear kumbiyah festival, which we can find in any number of wow clones easily enough already.

there are plenty of effective counters to trebs inside objectives.

another recurrent theme in the portal qq posts is a gross misunderstanding about how mesmer portals work.

alot of these arguments against portals have very little to do with the portals themselves.

and more to do with engine/client limitations
orb seats
overlooked/intended weaknesses aka map design issues
handicaps in the combat system that snowball in favour of larger numbers instead of as intended and handicapping in favour of newbs baddies and incompetents(no matter what anyone says, being a casual does not imply any of those)

unwillingness by players to adapt to changing paradigms, new games, be creative wtih strats and tactics and counter strats and tactics, which is endemic in the wvw forum and many fan chat places when it comes to wvw.

maybe there should be another class with a portal like ability, but for the same reasons that thief isn’t the only class with stealth. then again no class has anythign quite like the range of guardian’s active pvp tanking abilities, or thief’s solo stealth abilties to shut down a zerg from capping a point, or necros abilties to stack AOEs with various effects, and so on. the crux of the mesmer class is to sow confusion chaos and panic amongst the enemy. it can be very strong, but it can be easily mitigated- but i’m not going to tell you guys how to do that.

my advice is to focus less on teh score board and more on fighting epic battles.

OP sounds liek a personal problem. my guild has lots of fun fighting zergs with low numbers even when they have all 3 orbs.

ofc surprise surpise this isn’t a mythic game so you can’t just rely on the same mythic game tactics that don’t work anywhere else.

other daoc and warhammer vets have no problem adapting to new games, but for a vocal minority, the only answer seems to be to campaign devs to turn every single new game in to daoc 2.0.

i call this cliche daoc syndrome.

i smy video from last night. i changed some of my binds around recently because gw2 has issues with modifier binds not working properly, so since then i keep doing a bad job of recording since i’ve had fraps toggled to the same button for 8 years now…

my guild had fun last night, as always fighting out manned and out gunned and winning battles anyway.

i get tired of the qq about being outnumbered when we were in 2nd place as of when i went to bed last night at 1am and had more points on the map with only a small gap behind AR when i woke up this morning.

anyways what i thought was funnest part of last night was when both ehmry and anvil broke into bay on AR map and ebay went straight toward anvil’s treb that was trained on our inner then about 10 or 15 of us in a mixed guild force came in from their flank and wiped them with no survivors after they saved our inner from AR. was the highlight of my night for sure.

anyways if our commanders and would be server leaders are just going to whine about numbers i guess we can cede the match already less than 24 hours in. gg borlis pass, gg.

depends on which alliance you’re with i guess.

we had some epic action on blue map yday, but we could see that our home map was over run.

people on this server have dropped out of the war effort nearly every single week match that wasn’t obscenely in our favour until very recently.

and a central voice and neutral forums site was offered to the server, and ignored due to competing egos.

there’s only like maybe 2 or 3 competent commanders on borlis pass, and the rest … well don’t take my word for it, run around with them for yourself and you’ll find out.

i’m not really sure why so many commanders sometimes all in the same place as well. i personally evaluated the value of using commander book as a replacement for proper raid group functionality and found it was inadequate and better to save our money and simply keep using decent communication and organization skills even if it was unecessarily busy work for an mmo in 2012.

anyways, there’s a couple alliances around, you can join in if you want. i recomend the BPA. it’s not perfect but at least it’s semi functional.

it’s pretty apparent at this point that kaine’s daily diary posts aren’t about server pride or anything else other than attention for himself.

lashing out at fubuki, who i should note i follow on tumblr and can still see him blogging there about kaineng happenings every few days, really doesn’t help your case.

posting videos with your self on a toon that is lower than level 6 doesn’t make anyone look good. it looks like you’d rather spend your time making a fool of yourself and your server mates than contribute to your server’s war effort in a meaningful way.

i get the impression that kaine is the kind of wvwer that hops into a map and immidiately starts spamming map chat with play by plays and trying to tell people what to do RP style.

don’t get me wrong, nothing wrong with bringing a fresh alt to wvw. but you’ve posted on going videos of yourself with fresh alt while complaining that the onyl reason people win battles is they out level you/etc excuses.

maybe instead of posturing for attention for yourself, maybe help your server in some meaningful productive ways, like leveling up your toon, learning to help your groups, and so on.

what’s the deal with all these kaineng threads all the time. it’s like seriously bros, keep it to one thread per match like the the rest of us.

there has been observable changes in drop rates of key items, temporary mystic forge recipes and so on to manipulate prices indirectly that are not fees.

I don’t think so. If it was, the game client would be free or much less expensive. We pay for the basic game and have the opportunity to buy additional convenience/just for fun items for much less than an expansion. Permanent upgrades to your account, like extra character slots or bank expansions should be expensive. I much prefer that to the Hellgate model where you rent extra stash space.

I haven’t seen any of ANet’s business strategy documents, but from the outside it looks like they’re relying on a few folks willing to pay more less frequently than strong arming lots of folks into paying a little bit all the time.

actually what gw2 has is more or less a completely average f2p cash shop/MT model.

STO’s f2p model for example is very similar, with teh exception that accounts without pruchases on them have limited access- we can say though that that is simply similar or equal to the gw2 box price entry fee to playing at all.

especially in terms of the high drop rate chests that are unlocked by keys which in f2p games typically sell for $1-3 a piece. they tend to have some ultra low drop rate reward that compells people to spend hundreds of dollars in puruitof that item. we already see this in gw2 with the bank access express and perma tonic, with hints that this will be further augmented to make spending a great deal of money on the keys more desierable.

it’s not really any different from many many many games’ cash shops that are fully f2p model.

oh except in many of those games the item or currency that is used to trade between real life money and in game tradeable currency(ie gold) generally is freely tradeable, and there is direct trading as opposed to funneling all trade through anet’s market which disallows people from avoiding the destructive sales taxes on TP transactions(not really an argument that it mitigates scamming here, since people already trade directly in gw2 and thus are increased risk of being scammed as a result of lack of proper direct trading mechanisms)

what do you guys think pays for all those guards in every town and outpost? those guards have families you know. and they want to retire some day.

i didn’t ask for a gem refund, i asked for my copper ore to be delivered or my silver to be returned.

i clearly lost 50s from trying to buy copper ore twice in the first few hours of headstart.

i’m sur eif you look at my gold total if you have the tools to do so, you will see that there is a 50s~ discrkittency between my credits and debits that cannot be accounted for.

i waited patiently for a month because you or one of your reps said that as you say in this post, and i never recieved my copper ore or my silver, so i made a ticket, and nearly a month later i am told i will not get my silver or my copper ore because you guys have no record of the transactions.

i’m far from the only one that has had this issue.

also in case you guys didn’t know, kaineng has a 700 man oceanic zerg guild that likes to brag about capping most of the map at times when there is no resistance so that they need no seige.

here’s my guild fighting kaineng and daevona’s rest substantially outnumbered for reals in the previous match.

what does it prove? that borlis pass is outnumbered by kaineneg?

probably does show that kaineng isn’t quite the outnumbered meat grinder some people like ot think they are though XD

like was stated, the standard mmo term for hostile npc’s is mob, so calling zergs mobs(another standard mmo term) would only confuse the vast majority of people.

this was a fun battle last night to cap the night off. too bad for us you guys had siege trained on teh bridge and we lacked the numbers at that location to feasibly take that tower.

pretty fun battle all around, you guys pushed us back to our tower and then i logged off due to time of night, but all around good battle.

but yeah i guess this confirms it was SF from the south not AR like i was confused about.

HoM was in AR borderlands last night helping you guys fend off SF zergs until your guys decided to focus on us instead. was funny cuz BP had only a tower you seemed unable to take back(by our spawn) while green dominated most of your map.

anyways was pretty fun, we were trying some new stuff and in terms of seeing if our new ideas work or not it was mission accomplished.

i might go see if i got anything from when we moved over to SF at the end of the evening but i seem to recall not recording much of it so idk. basically big AR zerg i guess coming from the south side while idk what sf was doing, but maybe i have that mixed up not sure but i was getting tired and not reading name plates by that point.

i ad been using modifier binds with gw2 on my nostromo which had been set from within gw2.

but i noticed, especially when switching from signet warrior where it was less of an issue to mesmer, that when i tried to use my shift + 5 for call target or shift + 7 for use/pickup loot/talk it would constantly fire off the skill associated with that key that shift was modifiying the action for.

so i investigating, narrowing it down to being casued by my self, my nostromo, or the gw2 client.

if it was an issue with my nostromo, it was a new one. i played swtor this past year with this nostromo and half my rotation was modified binds. i had no such problems there.

if it was myself- well i am a lazy player. and gw2’s combat handicaps encourages me to be as such.

so i asked around – do you use modifer binds and/or a nostromo? the responses were unanimous. it is a bug they encountered as far back as beta, and no they did not use a nostromo.

i’m now down being able to target nearest enemy when click targetting is too muddy, and locked out of using my (pretty useless anyway most of the time) fkey class skills. as i had to remove the modifier binds for pick up loot and call target which are more essential.

had a great evening fighting SF mainly in AR borderlands. i think we saved AR a couple times there.

got some video of us messing with SF’s heads and i’ll upload it tomorrow. i think at some points they were bringing 4:1 odds against us lol. good times. anyways video will go up in the morning.

stopped by SF map just before logging out and some serious action going on there. we didn’t go there at first due to queue but i guess just about a half hour ago 45 minutes there was no longer a queue for us there. some crazy SF zerg coming at us from the some reason and word of another coming from the north. looked like a good time but i need my beauty rest.

best bet for converting items into precursors in the mystic forge is exotics. i haven’t heard of anyone trying to go straight to precursors from rares.

the people i’ve talked to that do MForging tend to go in very large batches. 17 is a relatively small batch at only 4 attempts. they guys i know that have been relatively successful tend to start with full max bags full of rares.

here’s the promised video. we basically have ummm i think 10 tops in teh first part holding down the camp out side our base against the guys that were holding the tower on SF BL.

i kinda derped and toggled off my fraps recording a couple times during the second part, the first cut there only misses a few seconds. there’s also a part where i decided i would split off from my group to kill a yak solo, but by that time SF was mostly just sending groups of 2-3 people at a time at us for some reason idk why.

anyways, gg to SF guys that brought it to us last night. we salute you. and thanks to the one pug iirc that was with us for a little while there, you did well thinking in portals with us.

he doesn’t specify what the double cross was, or what the arrangement that led to said double cross was.

but we can tell it’s the crafter guild, who during the last match vs ar and nsp we saw decide to end the truce in order to farm our objectives for karma and exp. strangely enough that zerg supposedly included the guy who asked for the truce in teh first place.

correction: i double checked the thread from the crafters guy, he wasn’t complaining about double teaming, he was complaining about spies and being double crossed by sbzy.

which is deliciously ironic considering what they(crafters) pulled last match.

crafterss guild made a different thread to qq about us going after them this match, same guild that broke last match’s truce.

but his guild alone doesn’t explain why plok was getting double teamed, considering plok wasn’t on AR BL friday night, that was BPA guilds gettign pushed into a corner by furnace and ar zergs while furnace was busy taking the map behind AR focusing on us.

which is why AR is so cute when they blame us, because they always have sided with green against us every match. so forgive BPA guilds if we went directly for you guys this time, because it would be silly to assume you would do anything other than go straight after us yet again.

there are a few ways that you can get credit for capping objectives without ever stepping anywhere near the capture circles.

i think my guild figured them in out the in the first couple weeks via casual play.

we don’t even think about doing them anymore, it’s so simple and easy and quick to do early in each engagement and then not worry at all about anything but pvping(and picking up loot bags ofc)

i’ll give you the most obvious one:

tag one/some of the npc guards with some dps. this always gets you credit.

there are other things you can do as well, i’ve gotten credit for tower caps from only defending siege weapons for example.

i was unnecessarily rude to plok last night, though it’s interesting what his perception is vs many of the rest of us here.

anyways, i apologize to plok and GOAT. i’m sure they’re a fine guild and i’m sure plok does more than just pug zerg sometimes.

i am uploading video now form last night of my guild vs furnace with 7-10 people fighting outnumbered. should be interesting. hopefully one o fmy guildies who do video got their own footage as they are much better at making video than i am(better players too)

orbs and numbers don’t mean as much as you seem to think they do. but i guess when your tactics book consists entirely of outnumbering people i can understand why being outnumbered would be an issue for you.

i saw that in our last match. kaineng had an orb in one of our keeps. another bug we had last match is where one of the orbs vanished from teh map for a day or two but was still under kaineng’s control magically.

So, then you didn’t right out the gate go after only AR targets, maybe the WvW map was broken… you always spout about AR playing for second, you did the last time we were matched, and you are now. If you wanted to ally against a larger sever population, your servers initial attacks on AR pretty much destroyed any hope of that. I understand that you guys did very well in the bottom bracket last week, and think what you have to look forward to next week.

For instance, attacking a supply camp where you have no resources on the map, cutting supply for AR towers while we are fighting green, like you are doing right now in EB.

last time we allied you guys, you backstabbed us as soon as you ran out of objectives to flip for exp and karma on your side of the map.

i’m not the one whining about anvil rock being anvil rock as usual though, that would be plok.

there’s a reason my guildies have instructions to move maps when they see your or silva’s commander tag on a map. i’m sure my guild is far from the only one here that have learned to do that.

@dovgan don’t pretend it hasn’t been a staple of matches between our servers for anvil to go after borlis since headstart. this strategy has server you well in staying out of the bottom bracket. my guild and i personally like the fights, but your protests are amusing. last match we teamed up we had a temp truce for a couple hours until your server intentionally went directly after us.

while it is amusing that AR is doing it’s typical play hard for 2nd place thing, most of the regular wvwers on borlis enjoy fighting out manned and out gunned.

had a blast last night fighting on two fronts all evening. looking forward to this week’s match.

we did have a queue on anvil’s map last night somehow, even though there was less than 50 of us in the small corner of the map AR and SF had pushed us into. rendering issues aside it was a lot of fun though.

anyways, silvas doesn’t represent many people on BP. but this is a new angle to his tactics i have not seen before, i did not know he was aware of any tactics beyond turning on his tag and running at doors.

they will spend millions on devs to avoid spending thousands on what is obvious to every western mmo company.

and that is pay people to actively enforce botting in teh open world.

i have watched them do this since 2004. it’s not going to change today.

one of the many things that makes gw2 yet another stereotypical ncsoft game.

if they do pay some people it will be on the cheap and it will be very flashy with alot of fanfare and A LOT of false positives.

they’d literally rather kill their games then do something constructive and meaningful and not totally ingenious but bizarre and self destructive.

we’ve been telling them for almost a decade, stop hurting legit players and go directly after teh bots. hire the people and give them the hours and pay and training to do a decent job. year after year, game after game, the song remains the same.

don’t take it the wrong way. this is the best match borlis pass/HoM has had since the dailies.

eh my guild might’ve spent less on siege and upgrades defending that keep/orb. that’s all.

we’re just a normal sized social casual pvx guild with some regular wvwers and and people who like doing wvw every couple nights.

i really doubt capping that keep earlier would’ve made a difference to our server as a whole.

punkbuster is the absolute worst anti hack system out there. it’s rightly known for being more likely to falsely ban/kick legit players rather than stop hackers(hint: it’s totally inneffective at stopping hacks)

even gameguard is better, and it’s also completely ineffective at stopping hacks.

actually the only effective anti hack software is VAC, but it’s manually monitored and adjusted by irl real actual people.

kaeneng had a zerg of about 25-40 in DR BL sunday nigth defending the tower directly outside their spawn and sometimes trying to take the camp north of it(that we’d take back as we were defending asc bay) and once or twice push on to asc bay southern outer wall.

DR had a zerg on the map of about 30-40 trying hard at asc bay from us.

i think the fact we pushed both side back repeatedly from what we wanted with a total defense force of 15 or so(11 guild members, some rando pugs from diffferent guilds) nullifies the idea that numbers > tactics at this tier.

half of my guys were on our lowbie alts as well, as low as level 4-6 and 15 in some cases. many of our 80s aren’t geared up yet.

DR seems to pretty much flip things then move on to something else liek they’re just farming karma.

they foguht my guild over the orb in kaeneng at asc bay spending i can’t imagine how much on siege(including at least 2 golems) only to abandon it right after.

at least kaineng defends things they take sometimes.

but yeah you guys should try working together during primetime.

The new code update must have been to reduce the zerging: make the game unplayable when you roll around with 50+.

my guild was running around on our lowbie alts last night for a bit in a group of around 6-8 and half of hem would randomly vanish on me without anyone else around or anything special happening

(i mean we were sitting idle ish in the north camp in kaeneng BL and suddenly they just dissapeared on me, from visible, right in front of me)

i like it when large portions of my group or my enemies randomly suddenly vanish right in front of me.

adds an extra element of suspence to the game.
