Zachariel, I did not intend to troll you! My other MMOs do not actually help me lose weight. That was a lie. I am sorry for my lie.

We'd like to say it's been fun, but really it hasn't.

Achieving no goal other than fun is very different from other MMOs.

All my other online games help me lose weight and learn CSS as I play, unlike Guild Wars which merely provides me with imaginary items and events that have no real value.

If you’re not using your five free character spots, then yeah, you’d be an idiot to do as my roommate did and pay real money for a extra bank tab before creating four additional characters to use their backpacks as four extra bank tabs for free.

…makes you look SO half-kittened and SO released-before-you-were-ready. It’s like one of those late-nineties websites with an “under construction” icon.

I don’t think you really are, I think it’s just your slightly passive-aggressive way of telling off exploiters. But most of the players who see the message are not the exploiters you’re thwarting, we’re just innocent players who are suddenly being jarred out of the fantasy wrold we were trying to lose ourselves in by an obtrusive error message.

Just remove it, for heaven’s sake. Why do you need to insert any message at all? It’s not like we’re going to be all that surprised or shocked to not get a drop from a given mob.

In regards to making farming easier or more difficult, I don’t think it would change anything.

I don’t think that was the important idea in the thread – what was important, and what should be changed, is that a max-level character’s experience of Tyria is more and more confined to a small area and repetitive routine, and that there could be many ways to give them meaningful things to do in more parts of the world.

Girls playing GW2

Oh dear, I’m afraid it is simply impossible to teach girls to play videogames because their tiny, female fingers do not have enough strength to hold the mouse.

You will have to play the game for your friend while she giggles shyly from underneath her parasol.

Edit: I don’t mean to be snarky (well, I did), but this thread seems like a relic from the ancient past of “no girls on the internet.” Weird to see someone posting something like this in earnest.

Guild Wars 2: A Hardcore Gamer's Prospective (Long Read)

Unless you change your reward-centric mentality, you’ve pretty much gotten all you can get out of the game, IMO. All in all, I’d say you got your money’s worth. Long-term, the game simply isn’t for hard-core raiders who expect some kind of tangible, meaningful rewards that fall in line with some presumed risk vs reward standard.

Gear upgrades in a system of constant stat inflation aren’t really tangible or meaningful.

However, dungeon armor is one of the main long-term goals the game presents to players. OP hasn’t just made up this goal for himself, it’s built into the game.

That being the case, a player’s progress toward that goal being wildly unpredictable because of bugs is not a problem with player attitude (and in fact OP’s attitude is constructive despite his frustration) – it’s a problem with the coding of the game.

[POLL] Adding New Skills! Vendor [vs] Free [vs] Others

Vendor: 3
Free: 0
We don’t need new skills: 1
Skills should be captured by mobs: 13
Other: 2

Other: I like the “gained from monsters” idea, but there should be as much or more variation to how this works as there is with skill point challenges now: some could require defeating a given champion, others a platform puzzle, other could be karma buys after conclusion of a high-level heart quest.

Because the skills should be situational rather than direct upgrades to existing elite skills, it shouldn’t be necessary to have a one-size-fits-all approach to how they are gained: you wouldn’t be kittening yourself if you couldn’t get through a hard platform run to unlock that new elite skill – you’d just be missing out on a bit of variety.

It would also make sense to scale up dynamic events according to level as well as number of players – if a couple of fully geared level 80s join in the lowbie DE, an extra veteran mob or three could be generated along with the other enemies to balance out the benefit of the down-leveled characters’ unchanged traits and gear.

I just got my first glimpse of Orr. I agree that it’s small and kind of unattractive and depressing.

One idea to boost existing content for level 80s: what if champion mobs (or champion and veteran mobs) dropped loot keyed to your actual level rather than theirs or your downleveled number? That would be a simple change that would really open up the world again for max-level players.

Your thoughts, monthly achievement exp without dying

I was so nervous about missing this part of the September achievement – I had everything else, but I’m a reckless player who dies a lot. I decided to get 100% on all the home cities to safely get some XP … I did two of them, and then walked off a ledge in the Grove and fell to my death!

But in the end I got it just by adventuring at my level – it’s only about a level and a half.

So that explains those weird messages while I’m in Orr. Just got there and was doing an event and kept getting that disabled message. I thought maybe it was a bug.

Exactly my experience last night. I had no idea about the exploit, but that “content disabled” popup was distracting and clumsy, and it made the game seem unfinished.

I understand the need to plug exploits (yes, OP is silly). But it should be done if possible in a way that’s invisible to other players – rather than giving us the impression that something in the game is broken.

Not to sound like a giant fanboy pollyanna (obviously this limitation is intended to encourage Black Lion purchases), but as someone leveling five alts I actually kind of enjoy choosing which character’s individual palette a new color should go in.

Earth tones for my ranger, sunset colors for my mesmer, silvers and greys for my guardian … but who gets this blue? It’s fun.

in Players Helping Players

I’m on Devona, and I eventually figured out that while the defense of our own borderlands is pretty much a lost cause, you can find small-scale skirmishes on the invader side in the Kaineng borderlands.

I’m brand new to WvW and I don’t have a guild, but I’ve been able to join in with little bands at the spawn point, gradually learn the ropes and begin a tiny badge collection.

The invader spawn point is closer to the action as well – running by yourself all the way from the central keep to the one and only battle marker only to get instantly ganked and have to make the run again is depressing for a beginner. But as an invader you can be right back in the fight.

I’ll admit I had considered a server transfer before trying the invasion side – but the flip side is that there’s never any queue.

I’m happy with the setup – I haven’t as yet encountered anything that feels like pay-to-win.

The only thing I plan to buy is character slots: when my main hits 80 I’ll make my sixth (Sylvari thief!), and I’ll spend my in-game gold if I have enough, and my real-world cash if I don’t.

I was astonished that there isn’t really an LFG channel. I wanted to try my first dungeon last night, so I just … went and stood next to it.

In end I did find a group after grinding a few nearby lowbie heart-quests for my world completion.

But this seems like a really weird omission – especially as PvP has an intricate and well-worked-out system for finding pickup teams.

An anet dev provided this graphic:

https://d2vn94glaxzkz3.cloudfront.net/wp-content/uploads/2012/09/Gender-Profession-Race-Crafting-Graph-590x378.jpg

According to that, Charr is the least-played race by just a little – Sylvari and Asura are about equally common (Humans are by far the most common with Norn in second).

Mesmer and Engineer are roughly tied for least-played class.

I have a Charr Engineer, and she’s a blast: her skirt flies up when she shoots her rifle.

Male Norn Mesmer.

You’d really think you see a lot of those, considering the trolling potential of three huge clones, but nope… never seen one but in other people’s screenshots.

Got one! But I made him short and skinny for a Norn.

Mystic Clovers Ruining Legendary Weapon?

in Crafting

I think the idea is supposed to be that you make the mystic clovers first, and then if the recipe fails a few times – well, that just means you have to farm/buy fewer T6 mats.

Ugh, I Want To Like Crafting So Bad, But...

in Crafting

dybryd.1358

The fact that the game actually warns you that cooking is an “advanced craft” that’s hard to level up, when in fact it’s (still) much easier to level than any of the six armor and weapon crafts makes it pretty clear that they somehow didn’t get that making three-quarters of the crafts dependent on the same set of rare drops would make those drops expensive to buy – and crafting both weapons and armor for yourself next to impossible.

If the crafting trainers want to issue a warning about difficulty, it should be that you should choose to craft either your own weapons or your own clothing – trying to do both is a recipe for frustration.

For the love of all that is good in the land, plz shut up vendors!

in Crafting

I like the conversations. Of course they become repetitive while crafting, but when running around the cities I often stop to listen to them.

And even for the repetitive ones, it’s that thing where the first time you hear a joke it’s funny, the fourth time it’s annoying, and the fortieth time it has a charming familiarity. Before I left Divinity’s Reach for Lion’s Arch I had started chanting “…through imaginary COMBAT??” in unison with the voice actor every time that conversation rolled around.

It would be pretty great if the sound files were changed up periodically, though – maybe temporarily replaced at seasonal events with season-appropriate chatter.

Don’t retire the current conversations entirely, though. It would be neat to have them pop up occasionally even after new content is introduced.

I absolutely LOVE “More violets, less violence.” Since it’s obviously a slogan, it even makes sense that multiple different Sylvari merrily blurt it out in various locations across the world.

I shouldn’t hear the greets NPCs give other players. Only the ones they give me.

I will specifically disagree with this. When you are walking around a city, you will hear people talking to other people. You’re living in a shared world. Trying to replicate a single-player experience in a multi-player environment is a dead end for MMOs, and one of the best things about GW2 is how it makes it easier to interact with other players without griefing or competing for resources.

My mesmer’s name is also a mistake. His name is “Ergi Seidhr” which I thought meant “sissy witch” in ancient Norse (he’s a Nord), but after getting him to level 20 I realized that my ancient Norse grammar isn’t quite up to scratch, so his name actually means not “sissy witch” but “sissifiedness witchcraft” – the correct version would have been “Argr Seidh”

It looks to me like I’m encountering a bug in the preview pane for the dungeon armor vendors in Lion’s Arch. All ten vendors have the same armor sets display in the preview pane – and none of them are the actual dungeon armor.

You can see what I mean in the screenshot: I’m talking to the Flame Legion guy, but the armor that shows up in the preview is neither what I’m wearing nor the Citadel of Flame armor.

Why I think that crafting is broken

in Crafting

Posted by: dybryd.1358

dybryd.1358

I think it’s clear that farming mats for crafters is supposed to be a way for lowbies to make gold, and to promote use of the trading post by both crafters and farmers.

It’s good for the game: encourages an active economy. Prices won’t settle for the next little while – especially with that huge cooking change just a couple days old – but I think it’s clear that the system is “working as intended.”
