Thanks for the heads-up about the Fractal achievements!

No new content? It was a pity to buy heart of thorns expansion. 4 new map 45 eur… Cool!

It sounds like people have forgotten that ArenaNet has made a very strong distinction between “balance” and “content” patches in the past. Quarterly balance patches won’t contain much, if any, new content (though the Fractal changes in this one may be something significant). Balance patches are intended to fix or alter existing content, not provide a boatload of new stuff.

From the most recent release schedule that I’ve seen, new content is supposed to resume in July or so. Yes, that means 9 months without any actual content updates. MO implied that the pace is unacceptable to them too.

People seem to be unclear that “suspended indefinitely” is a very delicate way of saying “cancelled.” Yes, it means that there is always the potential for this field to be picked up and worked on again, but the plan is not to spend any more resources on it. Ever.

“suspended indefinitely” no more resources devoted to it until other objectives are complete. Doesn’t mean that a developer on his lunch break won’t work on it if hes bored. E.g. of Lunch Break Content: Court Yard “Team Death Match”

“Cancelled” Not going to happen period. E.g. : Guild Wars Utopia

“Fixing the core game” is the condition – new Legendaries aren’t going to happen… (which is not a cynical way of saying the game is terrible and beyond redemption)

And regardless of whether or not they may finish them later, this still goes against what was promised and paid for with HoT. “Suspended indefinitely” is not “small groups at regular intervals”.

Why not stop making new Black lion weapons for a while and bring back a few old BL weapon sets that we can’t anywhere but the trading post? It seems like that takes quite a bit of development to make. I mean, I could be wrong but I think that it’d be a win win for the community. There are quite a few weapons that I missed the first time around that I’d like to get a hold of and you could focus on Legendaries and your other content.

Its a win win! Not everyone will like my solution because in game greed. But this doesn’t make everyone happy either. And I think that rotating old BL weapons back in could be a good solution.

They already do that. Sales/special events bring back old skins.

A BLTC/Gemstore skin =/= legendary journey.

Right? With all the collection development required, a Legendary is way more than just art.

I don’t agree with dictating what people can discuss in map-chat that isn’t already covered in the EULA/ToS, but if pushed for a time-frame I’d say the day of release should be the only day any punishment is implemented for spoilers. If that’s too harsh, my absolute limit would be the end of the film’s opening weekend. Because true fans who really care about film spoilers to the point that their mental health would be affected would have seen it by then.

Spoilers are everywhere. As people have said, many websites have published spoilers and this sort of thing happens in other places who won’t do anything about it so you could see it by chance elsewhere. Seriously. Please get some perspective; as the days go by this thread seems more and more ridiculous, sorry.

“Guild Wars 2 Rules of Conduct

1. While playing Guild Wars 2, you must respect the rights of others and their rights to play and enjoy the Game. To this end, you may not defraud, harass, threaten, embarrass or cause distress and/or unwanted attention to other players. This includes posting insulting, offensive, or abusive comments about players, repeatedly sending unwanted messages, reporting players maliciously, attacking a player based on race, sexual orientation, religion, heritage, etc. Hate speech is not tolerated."

This isn’t someone having a conversation and then being asked to knock it off. This is about griefing.

I generally agree opening weekend is enough time for a movie, but a week seems more than reasonable right now, especially give what movie this is and what time of year it is.

This thread makes me not want to talk about any new movies in map chat now because I might get reported and banned.

Thanks, Gaile.

You’re being deliberately obtuse. This isn’t about casual conversation where someone accidentally lets slip a spoiler for someone else. This is a clear case of griefing that has no point and the player engaging in this should at least get a temporary (1 week or so) suspension.

That someone who accidentally let slip a movie spoiler might offend someone who then reports them, be it that the person reporting interprets the so called spoiler in a way which is offensive/spamming aka a reportable offense as indicated by Gaile’s post.

May as well not talk about any upcoming/new movies we like in map chat else it might be a spoiler to someone and could get us reported and banned.

This should cover your concerns. Gaile is very explicit that this isn’t about accidentally letting something slip. This is about someone griefing an entire map.

From what I’m told, this person isn’t engaging in a conversation, isn’t interacting with others. He or she has chosen to stand in the heart of Tyria spewing spoilers. That seems antagonistic towards other players; that seems anti-community and disrespectful.

If this wasn’t a movie that people have been waiting eagerly for half their lives to see, we probably wouldn’t be having this discussion.

The only other thing I can think of that came close recently is Harry Potter. When I worked in book retail and in public libraries, people did some downright vile things at the releases of the last few books.

because my Ranger is not a Sylvari or a female char or whatever Kudzu is supposed to be for.

A flower bow, a pony short bow, a confetti pistol, a rainbow staff, a disco ball mace?

I honestly think the target audience for some of the legendary weapons are six year old girls. Well, considering Quip maybe although female clowns.

Please anet can we get a legendary weapon of every type a male character can wear without getting laughed at?

Wait wait wait… so being the embodiment of nature is too girly? I play a male human ranger and Kudzu is on my list of top three.

Having a bow that references the Muppets (“the lover, the dreamer and me”) and Robot Unicorn Attack, the most metal flashgame ever made, is too girly?

Bifrost is a rainbow that ferries the most glorious dead warriors from Midgard to Valhalla in classical Norse mythology. It’s where the Thor comics and movies came from, and it’s where Christianity got the phrase “The path to salvation is straight and narrow” because that came from the Eddas. A staff that represents the exaltation of the most valiant soldiers is too girly??

Next you’ll say Rodgort is too Girld to be awesome.

On topic, I’m all for a new Legendary longbow, one that might fit a Warrior theme more effectively. Unless you play one as the Green Knight, which is a whole different story.

Poor form Anet.

Why are you naming and shaming an entire group of players on your forum? Handle this behind closed doors. There’s no need for this public shaming by your employees. You expect us to hold ourselves to a high standard while posting. We should expect the same from you.

They HAD to address this publicly because what DnT did was done publicly and on a platform that distorted reality of what was actually was transpiring regarding what they had ‘accomplished’.

You need to take into account that in the MMO community, ‘World Firsts’ is part bragging rights and part marker for the quality/difficulty of a raid. The latter is important. Right now, there are a lot of really bored WoW players that are looking for something to do. GW2’s expansion/raid release right now is an arrow aimed between the ribs of this particular beast.

This doesn’t just hurt intra-business relations, this just doesn’t hurt the GW2 community…. it also hurts GW2’s ability to expand their market to new players interested in raiding, because DnT is a recognizable name to WoW players, and if they slap “LOL SALT SALT LOL WE GOT BOSS FIRST IN FIRST DAY BOIS” all over their social media and website, that’s a complete distortion of what’s happening but what prospective new raiding players may see before they download and try out the game.

Pretty much this. Doesn’t matter if DnT’s posts were jokes or hyperbole or whatever. This is the internet. Statements will always be misconstrued and someone will inevitably take them in the worst light possible. A guild as experienced in gaming culture at DnT should know that.

Basically, DnT were employees and ambassadors of ArenaNet for raiding. The debacle looks like this:

Boss: Congratulations, you’re hired for a super special job!
Well-Known Employee: HEY EVERYONE THIS PRODUCT SUCKS AND THEY SHOULD FEEL BAD KTHXBYE LOL
Boss: … yeah, that’s not okay, you’re fired.

Then, the boss has two options. 1. stay completely silent and let the employee set the narrative and let half-formed rumors and gossip spiral wildly out of control until the boss is a farm-hating, casual-loving vengeful scrub. Or 2. Be very clear and issue a statement that the behavior of the famous employee was unacceptable and damaging to the brand and would not be tolerated.

If that doesn’t settle it, show me the part where ArenaNet attacked or harassed DnT in the official statement.

I haven’t had much time to play today, but here are my first thoughts:

Staff AA needs a way to more effectively heal allies, like a non-targeted beam.

Attack animations for staff look really weird, like someone is carrying a laser rocket gun.

Astral Form attacks should be listed under Weapon Skills for slow reading processors like me

If you leave Astral Form early, it would be great if it kept your current energy level, like Spectral Form does for Necromancers.

Radius and functionality on glyphs is too small. I tried using the 10% damage buff, but because movement is so crucial other players were far out of range by the time it fired. The other glyphs didn’t have enough functionality to even warrant use.

The pets are awesome and I love them.

Got stuck there a couple of times, too (on 2 different chars).

When I tried it for the third time, I tried to see if I can spot anything strange… there were four things I found odd:

  1. Eir’s dialog (“He had to stay behind…”) already started while the Logan-cutscene was still playing (right before the screen fades to black when the airship is seen flying away)
  2. 1:16 after the game switches from the cutscene to the airship, i took damage (nothing appeared in the combat log) and all particles from particle effects (like those golden particles when you gain swiftness) moved really fast (as if i or the airship started moving really fast … IDK – probably due to the falling damage glitch!? is the airship probably moving down a bit before approaching the giants!?)
  3. the giants were totally stuck… no animations were playing or anything
  4. the dialog that Rytlock should say (“A good death…but too soon.”) is missing

So it looks like something breaks the script before Rytlock can say his line… probably the damage?

Hope this helps…

(( Btw. on one char it worked after restarting the mission ))

I had a similar issue today. The airship stopped moving just before the Giants loaded. I relogged and it worked fine.

I did notice something different the second time through. When interacting with Caithe right after arriving in the dungeon, I clicked through all the extra dialogue options before triggering the cut scene to start the search for the power cores.

The green NPC interact star above her head DID NOT go away. Also, after recovering the cores, the cut scene of Logan cutting the airship lose DID NOT play.

The second time, after talking to Caithe I started the cut scene immediately. The star went away and so far the instance is progressing as normal.

My [big] Revenant Rework

in Revenant

Posted by: felessan.9587

I have a two step suggestion to help with the weapon problem :

  • Each weapon would have a ranged/AoE and melee version of their skills that depends on the Legend in use. Ventari could be ranged and Jallis melee for instance. Equipping 2 melee legends would be like equipping 2 melee weapon sets; changing Stances could refresh weapon skill to make it more like having 2 sets.

This is what the Revenant needs.

Lacking weapon swap has just been unbearable to play with. I tried in both this beta and the previous one to play the profession, but it’s just too rigid so I gave up before too long.

The weapons are so closely tied to each legend thematically and mechanically it feels more like you pick one legend as your mainstay and a second because you have to. It plays more like you’ve locked yourself into one set of 10 skills with no option to switch between melee and range, and better synergize your utilities to support your choices.

I’m holding out for the 4th and 5th trait lines (not to mention the Elite Specialization) that maybe some of that will get fixed. I will say though, given how heavily focused this game is on DPS, with the current state of affairs the vast majority of players are going to be running Jallis/DPS legend with DPS legend’s weapon.

but if Person A’s beliefs and emotions are being forced on Person B, his/her emotions DO matter and very well SHOULD be considered. With the recent media hype over the LGBT community and how it needs special treatment being placed infront of everyone everywhere they look, can you really expect people to not be tired of it and not want to see it anymore?

Okay… let me ask… how is this being “forced” upon you?

Did someone MAKE you approach the NPC and talk to her?

Is there someone next to you right now sitting you in your chair and forcing you to open this discussion?

Does this person lock your TV to an endless loop of Caitlyn Jenner’s interview?

If not, then you’re not being forced. You are choosing to participate, at which point my original statement stands. You are objecting to a person’s existence. Your opinion and feelings therefore can be dismissed. Your right to take offense is not equal in any way, shape, or form to a person’s right to exist however they wish.

c’mon dude… you and I both know you cant walk, look, read, or hear anything anymore that isnt biased or discussing this topic… its like listening to the same justin beiber song for days on end… at some point you get tired of hearing justin beiber, no matter how well or poorly you think he sings… so yes, in some reguards, it IS forced on us by the media whether its directly or in passing or through other people engaging you to support their cause, or whatever other method you choose to say it.

the fact you are resulting to ABSOLUTES in your theory crafting is telling. Of course no one can FORCE me to watch biased NBC news or whatever, but it doesnt mean i dont hear things in passing, or on the radio, or see a magazine title etc…

and lets be clear… i dont object to their existing, im just tired of hearing about it everywhere i turn…. so your whole theory is a wash…

I’m informed about the scientific part of this topic – I’m not informed about how the people see it and why they feel the way they do. How they see things themselves.
It’s the difference between reading about a country and visiting and living among them I guess. I wanted to see the human side of it – hear what the people have to say instead of what the textbook teaches.

I guess that’s why I was poking and prodding.

I appreciate your honesty. But I question exactly how well informed you are about this topic scientifically. There are many “men” who are not genetically XY, and there are many women who are not genetically “XX.” There’s a reason that in the last few years trans activists have moved away from using “sex” to describe biology and replaced it with the phrase “assigned at birth.” (instead of “biologically male” the phrase is “assigned male at birth”)

I’m not sure what country you’re from, so I don’t know how medicine is practiced there, but there is a huge movement in the US to have gender dysphoria declassified as a disorder and thus remove the pathology of the trans identity.

And that is basically all I can interject at this point because I’m not a trans expert, medical professional, or geneticist.

So not caring is no longer neutral basically. I cannot separate myself from this issue and am forced to take a side.

If the question is “do you oppose it” and I answer no people will automatically assume I support it. I want the situation where I don’t do either. What do you call that?

I would say you can’t answer those questions with a yes or no. “I’m neutral” would be a better way to explain it. Saying you don’t have an opinion on the suffering of millions of people is difficult to hear though, and makes you seem like you lack empathy or compassion.

6. I could ignore the topic at hand and chatter – sure – but I would like to be informed. That’s why I came here. It’s what you claim to want people to be. Informed and aware. Maybe if you did that you might actually win ground. I certainly would like to know and understand more about a thing that I’m not very familiar with since my country doesn’t really have this phenomenon.

If that’s unwelcome I guess that says a lot.

Alright, I’m going to treat you like the prospective ally you claim to want to be and give you a few tips on how to handle situations like this.

When someone speaks from personal experience about a subject, say the proud trans posters on this thread, listen to them. Don’t argue. Don’t offer rebuttal. Not yet. You say that you aren’t familiar with this issue, so that means you have to understand that you don’t have the frame of reference to square their experiences against yet. OMG it’s hard to fight that urge, but if you really want to learn, you gotta do it.

When you try to argue about how YOU feel or try to play devil’s advocate, you’re not listening to what THEY are telling you.

The second thing is, a good ally doesn’t seek out members of the group they’re interested in, enter a space that isn’t for education (like this thread; it’s a celebration, not a lecture hall) and then demand that the other posters take time to educate you.

Yes, anyone from a minority group wants the rest of the world to get educated. But we can’t do all ourselves. It’s exhausting. Imagine having to justify your mere existence to people day in and day out because they’re demanding it.

And, we don’t speak for everyone in our identity groups. There are posters in this very thread who identify as LGBT that have said things that, as a gay man, I just can’t even with. But, that’s their experience. They don’t speak for me and clearly I don’t speak for them. So you should seek out as many different perspectives as you can before you start trying to form a frame of reference.

So how can you get educated? Do research. Use Google. Read books. People far more eloquent and informed than I have gone to great lengths to publish everything from blogs to books to help people, even those in the group, get better educated.

Last post for now.

Depending on the study but on average 2 to 7% of people identify as LGBT. So the fact that most games dipict the norm for upwards of 90% of people is shoving it down your throat.

My favorite part about SJWs, the idea that to include the minority one must exclude the majority or norm. It’s like the ‘gender is a social construct’ thing, even though that statement is kinda anti-transexual (because how can someone be born into a body that doesn’t match their gender if gender is a made up thing) and seems to ignore that our concepts of male and female are fairly normative. That is to say, most people born as biologically male have a male gender and like the ladies, and the other way around.
Then again this might just be one of those things I don’t get. Always willing to be informed however!

No one was seriously saying that cisgender heterosexuals must be replaced in and excluded from Tyria. It was hyperbole to demonstrate the ridiculousness of straight-washing the world. One can and SHOULD have representation from all corners.

What most relegated groups get offended by is when a discussion starts with celebrating representation of people who are traditionally told to stay silent and invisible, then told by the controlling majority that this is “their” space and that representing others in this space somehow disrespects them. Sound familiar, thread?

Tyria is not just “your space”; it’s ours too.

As for gender as social construct, start here

Easiest example of gender as social construct: every culture in the world has a different idea of what it means to be “a man” or “a woman,” not to mention how those ideas change over time.

If you think you can handle the big guns (and in no way do I mean this disparagingly; this stuff is DENSE), look up Judith Butler’s book Gender Trouble that pioneered the theory of gender performativity Not gonna lie, Butler is incredibly difficult to read.

Saying someone is “born” the wrong gender is technically incorrect; one is assigned a sex at birth (usually), and then typically raised to fit the gender identity that corresponds with that assignment.

Depends on how we define natural doesn’kitten If we define natural as being somewhat in line with norms, that is to say if normally happens a certain why and thus is the natural way, one would could argue that someone out of the norm would be abnormal or unnatural. After all unnatural doesn’t mean impossible, unnatural things do occur and thus their occurrence doesn’t inherently make them natural.
But there I go, argumentative again.

To say something is “unnatural” when there was no conscious choice involved is incorrect. Plastics are unnatural.

Take someone being born XXY (yes, it happens). This person wasn’t genetically engineered. They might not be normative, but it doesn’t make them unnatural.

Something to consider is the difference between “normal” and “normative,” which may help illuminate some of this discussion. Here’s a quick and dirty explanation of the differences

Depends again on how we define illness, we could define it as something that causes an abnormality (or we could define it as something harmful but that doesn’t fall in line with my train of argument… so I’ll just ignore it :P ), as homosexuality is not the norm (and thus by definition abnormal) we could in fact deduce that being homosexual was as a result of some sort of mental abnormality or illness.
Ok… I think I’m getting way too into this argumentative thing XD

The definition of illness or this one

Unless you really want to espouse the medically discarded view that being gay is somehow inherently bad for your health, no, you can’t argue that it’s an illness.

If this sounds like I’m talking like an academic, that’s because I am. I have a difficult time not seeing these nuances and distinctions anymore.

social change as in ending transphobia

Nah that’s silly.

Taking steps to help end unfavorable or alienating views is silly?

Taking away Freedom Of Choice from your customers will never be acceptable or rewarded.

You want the freedom to choose… what, exactly? Whether trans people exist in the game or not?

That’s really weird, dude.

Who made this choice: you? Arena net should make a vote to their players of bringing sensitive ideas to the game.

My point is: any decision a company make must take safety of their customers as 1st priority. Race, gender, religion, beliefs should never exposed unless if the person chose too. Maybe not to force them but this idea is a trap to expose them, deceive them to think it is ok to expose who they are and not realizing that is only putting their life in danger. I believe people are responisble for their actions but not actions deceiving them, trapping them into getting them in trouble. That is all i am saying .

ArenaNet didn’t make some gateway for the purpose of entrapping people. If you hadn’t noticed, ArenaNet has very strong pro-LGBT tendencies. If that really offends you, you may want to reconsider where you spend your money.

-“It’s a political agenda”: Is every straight character in a game a political agenda as well? Why would only lgbtq characters be part of an agenda while straight characters are not?

Let me refer you to the dialogue of the character. When they tell you about their choice, what is the player’s response, and ONLY response.

“That’s brave”

Really…? That’s brave?

Look at it this way: Sya is saying “I survived a horrific, life-altering wartime experience and it gave me a new appreciation for being alive. I decided I want to live the rest of my life honestly and freely.”

Yes, that is brave.

I do not have problem with any belief, religion etc… but i have a problem with a company who believes forcing their beliefs into their customers. Belief is private and personal

Suggestion:

Allow the npc to be selected in players personal and private guild halld.

Trans people existing is not a belief.

Just because someone is educated in one field, like the professor you mentioned, doesn’t mean he is educated in another or that he doesn’t speak the way he was taught by people most emphatically not educated in this when he was young.

And what field is that? Is there a more specific field for this then being an M.D.?

Note that I am just trying to point out, that education has little or nothing to do with the question.

That professor was also 60 years old at the time he said that. His medical training was a good 40 years before that and he was taught by people who medical training was 40 to 50 years before that. A lot has changed in the last 80 – 100 years in the understanding of human biology and the possible variations. If you are going by the one opinion of someone whose education is that far back, well, i have to tell you. There have been some updates.

Yet some of my recently educated friends believe the same (also MD and Dentist).

Educated in the fields they went to school and got a degree in doesn’t mean they are educated in everything. The fields they didn’t study, they are no better than laypeople.

What field is that?

Unless transsexuality resides in the teeth, your dentist friend is only a lay person in his understanding. Unless your doctor friend is a specialist in sexual behavior then his classes likely only touched upon this before going on to other subjects. Most doctors have a general medical training and then they go on to a specific training in one field.

As to the field, It’s not one field. It’s many fields coming together. For example it’s genetics, the studies of hormones and their effects, the case studies of children that are raised a different gender than their sex, history, the studies of different cultures to see how these show up over across cultures and how they are handled in each culture. It’s even studies of animals and their sexual behaviors (homosexual rams are fairly common for example).

So unless you are a doctor, an antrpologist, an animal doctor, a psychologist, philosophist and a historian all at once and in all of these fields you have not specialized in sexual behavior your oppinions don’t really matter.

I have a feeling no one in the world fits the above description.

Since you’re a psychologist, you’re probably familiar with the ICD-10 and DSM-5. Someone holding current specializations in sexual behavior (psychology or medicine) or even a solid background in Gender/Qu**r Theory, are all areas I would give more weight to.

You’re right that currently, gender dysphoria is classified as a medical disorder, but a body of research is mounting up supporting declassification – and in the DSM-5, only the discontent of gender identity issues is pathologized, not the identity discordance itself. If you and your colleagues are choosing to reject that research, that is your prerogative as working professionals.

But you should be aware it is no longer a medical consensus that being transgender is a justified disorder.

But what about customer loyalty? The people posting here are (mostly) dedicated players who support the company and the game. Reward them. Customer loyalty is paramount to a company’s survival and this is a perfect chance to show your current customer base that you appreciate their business.

Maybe give a discount (25%) to current players who preorder.u

Right now, I won’t be buying the expansion – I don’t know why any of the perks are helpful (other than the slot or 4000 gems), I don’t see enough content to justify the cost, there’s no cost insentive to buy now when the xpac will just go on sale come Christmas, and there’s no recognition of the fact that I am a loyal customer.

"DragonHunter" name feedback [merged]

in Guild Wars 2: Heart of Thorns

I love the name “Dragon Hunter” but I don’t think it’s thematically appropriate for this specialization. Beside making dragon-themed named and animations, the profession is still light and virtue-based.

After having it explained to me, I see the relationship between witch-hunter and dragon hunter, but I would never have made the connection without being led there by the nose.

All the other professions and specializations so far have names that are highly evocative of what makes their milieu unique. I see the “hunter” part of this one, but the “dragon” part is lacking in thematics or specificity.

Maybe it’s because I have a strong love of Dragon Hunters from D&D, but dragon hunters would typically gain bonuses or abilities specific to wrangling, taming, or slaying dragons. Since everything in this game is about fighting dragons, using this as a specialist name without really digging into that name thematically feels disconnected.

Notice the use of the phrase ‘VIABLE builds’ in this interview. Clearly, they recognize that this is going to reduce total build diversity, with the hope of making more builds actually useful.

I reserve judgment until I see the fully revamped trait lines, which is what we’re seeing tomorrow on twitch right? It’s impossible to know how good builds will be without knowing how traits have been merged, altered, shuffled, and dropped.

there si ONE problem NOONE said anything:

the materials that are needed for the mystic forge HAVE NO MATEERIAL BANK SLOT.
means that with the sudden materials you get for your scrolls AND allready gathered SPs you have more stuff in your bank you DONt need and can not sell.

We don’t know they’re not adding one. They did for quartz, sprockets, toxic spores, and ambrite. They may for this as well. It is still my hope they make it a freaking currency and just add it to the wallet.

Right now though it’s too early to freak out about it.

Though given the track record of snatching defeat from the jaws of victory, it’s understandable why people would be nervous.

Q: Will these changes go live before HoT launches?

Q: Will characters be grandfathered in for skill and trait unlocks?
– If not, what will happen for pre-existing characters that haven’t completed many Skill Challenges?
– When you say “A single character who’s done a fair amount of the hero challenges should be able to unlock all of the core specializations, skills, and traits” about what percent are you imagining? Is “a fair amount” 55%? 90%?

Q: How will WvW-exclusive level 80 characters gain Hero Points?

Q: I noticed from the Water Trait line graphic that the demo character is at Water Rank 10, and requires 25 Hero Points to increase rank. It appears they have a pool of 2048 Hero Points. This suggests to me that Hero Points will not be awarded 1 per level or 1 per Hero Challenge. It also seems to indicate there are 16 ranks in the Water trait line, one for each major and minor trait. Is this the general idea? If so:
– will the number of Hero Points awarded per level increase as a character increases in level, ie 5 at level 5 but 110 at level 70?
– Will Hero Challenges award different amounts depending on level, ie 1 from a Queensdale challenge, but 25 from a Cursed Shore challenge?
– And will the cost per rank increase, ie something like 1 point for rank 1, 25 for rank 11, and 50 for rank 16.

Q: Will Hero Points be earned every level, or in chunks at different levels, as Skill Points are now?

Q: Will parts of skill/trait trees be level gated, IE Adept major slots unlock at 30, Master major slots at 60, and Grandmaster at 80?

Q: Are traits that affect certain skill types spread out across more than three trait trees?

Q: Will we be able to select, for example, 4 Adept traits and 2 Master traits, instead of 3/3/3?

Q: How will excess Skill Points be exchanged for Mystic Forge materials? Automatically and randomly? Based on the amount of Skill Points a character currently has? Through a vendor? What will happen to excess Scrolls of Knowledge? Should I consume all of those now?

Q: What currency will replace Skill Points for things like Bloodstone Shards and Augur’s Stones? Hero Points?

Q: Will the difference between armor tiers and their stats be percentage based? IE Ascended is about 10% stronger than Exotic, will that remain true?

I’ve read through alot of these posts and some of you seem to have personalized the issue and seem very self righteous about it. So let me do the same.

My question is what gives you specifically the right to choose which words are offensive and which ones aren’t on a multicultural game?

Gw2 is very culturally diverse and many words have very different meanings for a great range of people. What might be offensive to you might actually have been completely harmless. GW2 has a block feature, a hide chat feature and a profanity filter for the more delicate souls that play the game.

Now I’m not condoning bullying or verbal abuse, for those there is a report button and I honestly haven’t seen it fail yet, though it can take a few days to kick in. They can only add so many words to the profanity filter, at which point it gets somewhat ridiculous.

An example of this:
Hooters in america means an adult bar (from what I understand). Where I am from it is a slang term for owls. Completely harmless. Yet this term I have often found to be blocked by profanity filters in many games.
There are many many names for genitalia which I had no idea about most of them about until coming to the internet only to find these words (when trying to use them in a complete mundane and harmless fashion) have been blocked as ‘profanity’.
They word Gay has also been discussed here alot; where I grew up it was still a term that meant ‘happy’. Not Homosexual. But thank you to whoever is responsible for perverting such a nice and innocent word. And now it has become slang for ‘uncool’ or ‘boring’ or ‘lame’ and all the homosexuals get up in arms about it. But heaven forbid that you remind such people about it actual meaning.

I’m sorry if this is a bit of a rant, but I am sick and tired of playing games where I have to change my language even though the words I do not use are cuss words or are not profanity, simply because some Americans decide that a word is offensive because it’s american slang, even when the context uses it’s ORIGINAL MEANING.

The profanity filter covers so much already, and can make harmless intellectual conversation difficult as it is. What more do you want them to do with it?
If someone is being a bully or being unnecessarily cruel or even if there is someone breaking TOS, there IS a report function and it does work. I suggest you use it. And if all that fails you are able to block the offensive person and never hear from them again.
The technology is there! Use it!

Block and dont read map chat if you find certain things triggering. Btw dare I ask if WoW is as “liberal” in applying censorship?

In first place I don’t think the term gay is offensive to homosexuals. I mean LGBTQI etc. Sorry I am not from a Western country, perhaps it is really offensive.

It’s only offensive when it’s used in its latest meaning, which is basically “lame”.

As in: “Rangers are so gay.”, or whatever (not meaning that they are actually gay, but that they are a bad class).

Obviously, if you are a gay person, it will probably be offensive to you that the word used to describe your sexual orientation, now also means bad/lame.

As it would appear there was a connection made, at least at some point, between the two.

Obviously, historically, before it referred to sexuality, it meant happy and I think, also, brightly coloured/pretty?

So, within a few decades, it has gone from meaning happy/pretty, to lame, via a sexuality.

It’s had quite a journey…

This. This is the point I was trying make, sorry if I was unclear.

No, I do not object to people using the word " gay" in general. Adding that to the filter would just be ridiculous.

Word meanings change. They evolve over time. I know that at least some of those using words like, “ghey,” are not intending any reference at all to homosexuality. Gay did not originally mean homosexual. Similarly the term, “loverboy,” predates Zaoda’s presented definition of, “ghey-submissive-slaves.”

Of course we should combat personal attacks, racism, homophobia, sexism, etc. but, “your definition of a slang word is different than mine so you should be punished,” seems like a bit much.

Interesting article about the word gay and how its meaning has changed over the years, including that the word is now starting to mean stupid or lame without reference to gay people.

http://www.todayifoundout.com/index.php/2010/02/how-gay-came-to-mean-homosexual/

See Southpark’s episode on another word that has changed meaning over time, and was basically hitting at this.

Look, I’m fine with the major curse words getting filter. Some people still have a problem with it if a kid hears it. And that’s what i saw a profanity filter and beeping on the radio and tv over those words was for, because kids might see it. Well, kids don’t stay kids for long, and they are gonna hear it, and be able to replace those beeps with what the actual word is.

Fact is, you can’t go on your whole life living in a bubble, be it playing an ONLINE game or going to work. You’re going to be exposed to it, and its not the end of the world. Its time to get some thicker skin and just learn to ignore it on your own.

I’ve learned one thing playing video games my whole life, and that is they are just games. Oh no, some nameless person said vulgar language to me as an insult that really has no impact on me in real life, whatever shall I do? Oh, not care? Suddenly, I feel so much better! And then you can actually see these little taunts or tantrums as being pretty hilarious. Now, of course, if it goes so far as stalking and harrassment, then you should report. But a one off brush? Pft. Big deal.

For the record, no, I’ve never run into what the OP is talking about. I had one guy taunting me and insulting me in spvp cause i was so bad, but yeah, I was. Big deal? After the game, he was gone, and I played another game.

Edit: That article is actually how me, my sister, and friends talk now. We don’t mean same sex, or happy, but now stupid or lame. If anything, its a GOOD thing, because, to me, gay with the same sex meaning was starting to sound more negative anyway with how it was used, and people thought “lets just change the definition to a negative then anyway”.

This argument makes me lose my mind.

Hearing people randomly shouting Fort Aspenwood Garbage (that’s clever, thanks!) or gay is not directly an attack on any one person, but it’s a reminder that, no matter what you think, we queer folks live in a society that persecutes, belittles, and harms us on a daily basis.

Using “gay” as slang for “stupid” comes directly from using it to demean people by labeling them homosexuals. You might not mean it that way. But what happens when people keep saying “words change” and slowly people think it’s okay to use whatever words they like, as long as they meant something else? I might want to break out a whole kitten nal of racial slang that I am using in completely tangential ways, but does that make it okay?

I have a bunch of “nuclear option” real life examples that have happened to me personally because of the world that enabling slang creates, but I’ll save those since this is clearly not the crowd. Just understand that while you might not mean any offense with the words you use, you are unintentionally allowing, enabling, and perpetuating harm against others in doing so.

On the other hand, I hardly ever see any actually obscene or explicit chat. I grew up in the age of teh intarwebz and I know what to expect. I am consistently impressed with how mature the GW2 community is overall. I see some kinky stuff from time to time and people can get vulgar during big events, but it’s not bad.

You start off with a slang casual phrase that references a loss of mental health. Was it your intention to demean those with actual mental health issues? To belittle their very real problems by casually assuming their mantle in an internet discussion about the evolution of words and the offense that might be taken by those holding to only one definition of many for some such?

Or were you just using a phrase that doesn’t hold to its original meaning any longer in order to try to express a thought?

You’re making assumptions about me that you might not want to be making.

OK, then why does gay have to mean homosexual? It meant happy before (see Flintstones theme song), now it means homosexual. How is that fair?

Again, you are missing the point of the article, and dismissing the episode. I can’t say the word because of the filter, but let’s say it was another derogatory word for same sex people, except now they were using it for annoying Harvey bikers.

That’s not the point. The article clearly says where the modern use of the word gay to mean stupid comes from and it further implies that the assumption that gay as stupid is not taken offensively is incorrect. And even if I’m reading the article wrong, I am telling you, through lived experience, that it is harmful.

Because i happen to know someone who was forced to change their character names when there is absolutely nothing offensive about them. So if there is an actual professional moderation team at work, why are they not professional enough to spot the difference between offensive/insulting/inappropriate and normal?

And no, the names in question are not – in any way – inappropriate.

The problem with the “inappropriate character name” thing is that it’s set to automatically force a renaming after a certain number of reports are made against the same name (I’ve heard multiple times that the number is four). Someone in my guild was forced to change his name (which is the name of a goddess and multiple fictional characters) because enough people reported his name due to the same four letters being used as an acronym for a terrorist organization.

So yeah, something needs to change there.

I see that someone referred to earlier statements I made about this, but I want to make it clear, again, that we do not have automatic blocks based on the number of reports. Auto-blocks based report numbers would encourage (and support) mass griefing. Consider: “Report Fred.1234 for an offensive name, and if enough from our guild do it, that person will be blocked!” That’s just not the way things happen, not for behavioral issues, not for offensive chat, not for names.

Rest assured that reported names are reviewed by a human being, and a human being — not a report-counting automaton — decides on the appropriate action, often with input from another human being on the team.

So, are mythological names a no no, or is it that a terrorist organization coppied that name forcing it to become banned?

There was a discussion about that specific name. There is no general problem with that goddess’s name in general. Link here: https://forum-en.gw2archive.eu/forum/support/support/Name-Misunderstanding/first#post4344839

The icon for Dancing with Jenna shows the same icon as the Jenna Miniature after all.

It could easily be either placeholders or items/things using the same icon.

I really hope so. After the way the Treasure Hunter and Exotic Weapon collection drive prices through the roof, I’d be concerned about that happening here, especially since the whole point was to avoid spending money to buy a precursor in the first place.

Whew. For a second there I thought that was going to lead to https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oTItRfN-LO8 and make me remember Godzooky.

It’s “Gojira”, not “Godzilla”.

“Gojira” is a portmanteau of “gorira” (gorilla) and “kujira” (whale).

So if you still wanted to translate the name to English even though translating names is something nobody should ever do under any circumstance, it’ll be “Goriwhale” or “Whalerilla”.

Now, pronounce “gojira” as a Japanese would, remembering that the “o” is long, “j” has a “z” sound, the “i” is short, and “r” has an sound something like a mix of “l” and “d”. Sounds remarkably like “Godzilla”, does it not? Certainly an English speaker unfamiliar with Japanese could be forgiven for hearing it that way and writing it phonetically. The same English speaker trying to pronounce “gojira” is going to pronounce it something like “go-jeer-ah”, which is WAY out of line.

Not quite. The “j” sound isn’t a “zh” sound, it’s more like the “g” sound in the word “Genie.” The “i” in Japanese is pronounced as a long “e” in English, like “evil” not the “ih” sound like in “if.” It actually is pronounced “go-jeer-ah” but the emphasis is on the first syllable, “GO-jeer-ah,” rather than the second, “go-JEER-ah” which is the most common mistake English speakers make when pronouncing Japanese words (yes, I know Japanese is technically a “flat” language without emphasis on any syllable but those rules go right out the window when waeigo is involved).

  • Daria and Invader Zim are my favorite TV shows
  • I’ve been singing since I was 10 and acting since I was 12. My primary acting training is in musical theater. I currently sing with a very famous gay men’s chorus
  • My favorite music is showtunes, followed closely by Lady Gaga
  • I love super heroes, especially Marvel’s women, and I cried for joy when I heard Captain Marvel would be made into a movie with Carol Danvers as the leading character. I started collecting comic books when I turned 30
  • I’m getting nerdier and more socially awkward as I get older

Traits Part 2

From Colin’s post, it did sound like traits were going to be tied to the Mastery system somehow. In the previous thread a number of posters suggested track-based progression, so it wouldn’t be too big a presumption to presume that’s what we’re getting.

Now that we’ve seen the Mastery system, I’m sure it’s safe to say traits != Mastery. It just wouldn’t make sense to permanently lock players out of a core system that they may already have access to.

It doesn’t seem any more information is coming any time soon though.

This stuff makes my head explode.

Since the intention seems to be to rework the entire traits structure sometime (to be determined), it would appear to be a waste of time to level a character at this time. Probably a waste of money as well.

Can someone explain to me why my logic is faulty?

I suspect those are resources better spent elsewhere. It just depends on how long it will be (5-7 months most likely). I hope it’s sooner, but that’s unlikely. Can you hold out that long?

Looks like we’re getting the “deep dive” for mastery tomorrow! Does this mean the trait update will be coming this spring?
