Persiës Sunreaver (ele), Persiës (ranger),
Gromphe Baenre (necro), Përsies (guard)
Your suggestion is very creepy, A Lynx coming out of nowhere, bites the foe once and then runs away in giggles o.O
Seeing as they have admitted they can’t fix pet attack UI it was the only alternative I could think of. Also, this is basically how mesmer phantasms function, not really that crazy of an idea.
you can run cof path 1 with 4w and 1 mes or you can find friends willing to have a little fun instead of the boring 0 challenge 11111 fest.
You do realize the fastest CoF run has a ranger, right? If you are talking about pve a (non-kitten ) ranger actually brings some of the best group buffs in the form of spotter and frost spirit and respectable dps. Warriors do not do as much damage as everyone thinks they do. A well played ele will destroy a warrior in dps, no contest.
Warriors are popular because they are easy, both to gear and to play and they bring banners. Trust me I have an 80 warrior and absolutely hate playing it because it is so boring. Would rather play ele/ranger any day.
Also your comment about 11111 in pve is somewhat silly as well since most professions rely on strong auto attack chains for damage in power builds, rangers included (sword).
Alright, so Anet has effectively said it’s currently impossible to fix ranger pet pathing issues due to mob AI. Pets can do a ton of damage (i.e. 10k+ cat crits etc.), however all someone has to do to completely avoid any and all damage from a ranger pet is… move. Like move at all, even just a little. Couple this with the fact that F2 pet skills are incredibly buggy (cooldowns activating without the skill etc.) and the lack of pet survivability in pve and zergs and what you are left with is the only class that is crippled by its own mechanic. While some of the other class mechanics might not be “awesome” they certainly do not hinder their class in the same way pets do with rangers.
Proposed change:
Remove permanent pets. Make our F1-F4 abilities tied to short term pet summon abilities. Example:
Let’s say we have as our “active” pet a Lynx. The current abilities a lynx will use are:
1. Slash – (spam attack) slash at your foe leaving them vulnerable.
- applies 1 stack of vulnerability
2. Bite – (8s base cd) bite your foe for severe damage
- high direct damage attack
3. Maul (20s base cd) slash a foe multiple times and make them bleed
- very good condition based attack, applies 4 stacks of bleed
4. Rending Pounce (F2, 30s base cd) leap at a target foe and make them bleed
- condi damage attack, leap finisher, 4 stacks of bleed
How my changes would function
You would still have an “active” and “reserve” pet. However instead of being permanently present they would serve a different role. You would get certain bonuses/abilities based on your active pet. Whatever your pet’s #1 spam attack did will augment your current weapon’s auto attack. Lynx example: when Lynx is your active pet all your auto attacks also apply a stack of vulnerability.
You would also have F1-F3 “class mechanic” abilities that would replace our current F2. This would summon a temporary pet that would be non targetable and only perform the task it is summoned for and then go away. Lynx example: we use our new F1 ability, Bite. A lynx rushes from the shadows, bites our target, then scatters to safety.
In addition
Anet should not change current ranger attribute modifiers too much. Instead give rangers an attribute bonus corresponding to their current active pet. Lynx example: the lynx has its attributes concentrated in precision, so in this model the ranger would gain a precision bonus (maybe a crit damage bonus as well). This way the different archetypes of pets would give different attribute bonuses to power, precision, toughness, or vitality.
Now if you would say this would give rangers “too many abilities,” I really don’t buy that, look at engineers or eles.
What this fixes
-Hopefully can fix the pet pathing problem as the only thing these temporary summons would have to do is perform the ability and peace out so they can (hopefully) be properly coded.
-Make the ranger class mechanic actually help the profession instead of hinder it
-Remove pets being dead 90% of the time in pve and zerg fights
-Give rangers more active control of the class by improving F1-3 functionality
-Keeps pets as the “identity” of the ranger class (albeit in an active and not passive role) which prevents us from being “crappy warriors”
-More stat diversity with active pet bonuses
-Better attribute scaling on abilities, making power builds far more effective
-Source of active condition removal (i.e. use bear as active pet for condi removal)
I am not saying all of this is feasible or realistic but I implore Anet to seriously consider this change.
For those of you who like pets
Honestly I like pets as well. It’s fun adventuring with an animal companion. However it is undeniable that they are a hindrance to the effectiveness of the ranger class as a whole. As such, for the good of the class, I think it is time to move on. Also since quickness has been nerfed to all hell, it might be possible to replace Zephyr’s Speed with another grandmaster trait in the BM tree that makes pets permanent instead of temporary summons. This would give people who want to invest in their pets the option to have permanent versions.
Please discuss and keep discussion civil, critical and constructive.

The thing is… the damage from barrage SUCKS. I am honestly convinced 90% of rangers only play rangers and have no experience other classes… If I take a full zerker ranger to a zerg and use barrage, the damage will be barely noticeable. Every time we see the barrage animation we are like “OH kitten IS THAT AN ARROW CART…. oh haha it’s just barrage” zerg walks through with no worries
Now if I take a full zerker ele and meteor shower on a zerg… THAT is damage. A couple glass eles can destroy an entire zerg, rangers will barely make a dent.
What I’m saying is just because “it’s our only aoe” outside of traps doesn’t mean it’s either 1. good or 2. worth keeping. So if people are generally in favor of barrage, let’s talk about ways in which it could be improved.
Possible improvements:
-add a pulsing aoe immob that gets applied with each tick, much more effective that just cripple (since most “zerg” specs have a ton of condi cleanse that just shrugs off cripple) immob would help fragment a zerg and break up a melee train
-add torment stacks to each tick, this would fit in with how rangers can benefit from mixing power/condi damage
-or just a straight up increase in damage
I would be in favor of making ranger’s “thing” pulsing aoe immob, which would be incredibly useful in zergs and (maybe) make rangers wanted.
We have enough stealth builds in the game
![]()
The ranger class is an AI class, if you give it too much stealth it would very annoying to fight in pvp (staying in stealth while pet keeps doing dmg).
Stealth breaks if you or your pet do damage, easy fix there.
One thing that has always bothered me is how warriors get a very high damage burst ranged attack and rangers do not have anything remotely close.
I propose changing LB 5 from an aoe to a direct damage single target attack. Could possibly have other effects besides direct damage (maybe applies vulnerability or something of that nature) if the cooldown is long enough.
Anyone who has ever used meteor shower knows how underwhelming the damage on LB 5 is even on full zerker rangers. Just an idea that I think would improve the class (albeit in a minor way).
I always thought it was really weird that warriors get a huge single target ranged ability while rangers… don’t…
Would love if they would replace LB 5 with a snipe type attack.
Isolating one thing as the cause of all OPness (hee hee Pness) is kinda silly to do. D/d thieves are really not bad at all since CnD can be dodged. The “problem” with stealth is the d/p weapon set coupled with how initiative works. No other class can lay down a field then spam a finisher: SB for blast spam, HS for leap spam, etc. What I am saying here is you can’t just isolate stealth as the most evil, worst thing ever, omg it’s terrible, thing.
Is the fact that I am supposed to consider a thief running away “winning” slightly annoying to me? Yeah, I’ll admit it. Do I think that blanket nerfing stealth will help the game in a positive way, no. If you change stealth (not nerf it) you would need to significantly change some of the other thief mechanics to compensate, namely giving them some other form of defense. One thing I would be an advocate for is more blinds/dodges/evades for thieves. These things are inherently less frustrating because while they provide as much (if not more) defense than stealth, you can still see your opponent. But any time changes to stealth are brought up thieves usually murder you through the interweb. Oh well, poop happens.
Meanwhile in jq/bg/sor matchup…
Hey, we had that one sentry =)
In all honestly while the “for fights” thing is fun in the moment, it might as well be “we don’t have non prime time coverage so we just don’t give a kitten.” Why even bother trying to compete for ppt when bg/jq just have such a ridiculous advantage there.
I’m a science grad student so although I live in NA I have really weird play hours. When I log on during Oceanic or European hours the wvw maps pretty much look like above. At least it leaves a lot of stuff for SoR roamers/havoc squads to take.
I don’t mind bag farming, it’s a good time. More fun than worrying about ppt all the time imo. Just wish bg/jq would actually fight back more and not think of wvw as some glorified pve area. I remember the one time we farmed so many jq that wanted the chest from the champion wurm soooo bad =D
Just wanted to say, I really appreciate both the ele profession and the ele forum community. I also play a ranger and looking at the ranger forums at all is just god kitten depressing. The ele forums are mostly full of useful and friendly advice. Not to mention, it is sooo fun playing ele =D
With my staff ele I don’t even enter in WvW without 19k+ and 2600+ armor.
The most you stay alive, the most you are useful!!!
When I’m running my support build 0/0/20/20/30 in a zerg I use ptv armor and cleric trinkets and have similar stats, ~18k hp, ~2700 armor. However if you can master proper positioning and use of fire staff 4 with zerker gear you can dish out ridiculous ranged damage. I have been in hammer/anvil zergs with a melee train and a ranged ele group with separate commanders and we would decimate larger zergs, it’s really fun. Playing as a zerker ele in a zerg is one of the most fun things in the game imo.
That being said when I am roaming on my ele as d/d I personally prefer toughness + healing power over vitality. I wouldn’t put just toughness over vit, but when you couple toughness with healing power and the multiple options eles have to heal, you end up with a lot of survivability.
I have seen 20k meteor storm crits with tornado up, which is always nice to see in zergs. I think realistically churning earth would most likely hit the highest, hell I crit for 11k in a fractal the other night in my ptv/healing power set. Ele is so kitten fun.
I would suggest largely ignoring urdriel, every post I read by him convinces me more and more that he either doesn’t even play a ranger or doesn’t put the time in to gear/spec/play one well.
While constructive criticism is often helpful and can lead to good dialog, constant and obstinate negativity is neither helpful nor good for a community. At this point I largely ignore what people say about rangers because I really enjoy roaming/zerging with mine and do not feel “zomg underpowered” at all. For perspective I also have a warrior and ele, two of the “best” zerging classes so I don’t have “ranger goggles” on.
Hehe, “ranger goggles”
Honestly the only ridiculous ranged damage in the game is staff ele. If I run full zerker ele in wvw (which isn’t that bad to survive with if your positioning is good, fire 4 staff OP) I can crit 15k+ meteor storms consistently and auto attack has crit as high as 8k for me (which has a pretty good aoe radius). With that being said staff ele is the only legitimate ranged dps spec in the game and anything else that is worth mentioning is melee. Scepter/x for ele is really only good with a lightning hammer build, which isnt exactly ideal for wvw.
With that being said while rangers might not have top notch dps with LB, it is an incredibly good weapon for pvp nonetheless. I usually run s/d lb while roaming (evade mode) or gs/lb in a zerg and I honestly feel more tanky than my warrior. It is not hard to put together a set with 3.2k+ power, 3k+ armor, ~40-50% crit and ~70% crit dmg 20k hp (no guard stacks). This is not bad at all for zerging and will give you good survivability along with decent damage.
LB isn’t for monster zomg damage omg I just killed an entire zerg solo. What it does have is good ranged pressure (1 at max range, 2 otherwise) and very good utility skills in 3, 4 and 5. I can’t count the number of downs I’ve gotten in a zerg by dodge rolling to a downed target, LB 3, stealth finish, gs 3 out, gs 4 to block ranged attacks. The biggest issue with rangers is 1. pet AI, and 2. pet survivability. Couple this with the fact that rangers are not easy to play and people say they suck.
At the end of the day play whatever you want. Would I love it if rangers got buffed? Hell yeah. Do I think they suck, absolutely not. I love playing my ranger in wvw as much as my ele, a lot. Happy hunting if you do choose ranger.
This is what I use to roam, it’s a pretty standard d/d build. I like the cavalier set for the extra toughness while still maintaining decent crit damage. I also use the assassin weapons/gems to help get my crit over 30% and use food/oil to get my power up to a decent amount. Of course this can all be circumvented by just using celestial gear but I haven’t had the time to put a set of that together unfortunately.
At least in my opinion 30 arcane and at least 20 water is the makings of a solid d/d build. If you want more defensive you can use:
I will also use this with staff in zergs since the stability on switching to earth is invaluable there.
In my opinion toughness/healing power is far more valuable than straight vitality. I run with ~14-15k health even in zergs and I feel fine since I can basically heal to full just from swapping to water and dodging once with a nice amount of healing power.
I brought this up in another thread in the spvp forums but I think that there could be a valid replacement for the downed state. Two things bother me about it, the fact that in a 1v2 even if I down an enemy they can get rezzed faster than I can either kill them or spike them which makes 1v2s incredibly difficult to pull off against (non brain-dead) enemies. The other is, as other people have mentioned, power rezzing in WvW. This takes away any incentive to run smaller, more organized groups over simply massing in numbers. On SoR fairly often we will have a smaller zerg going up against much larger BG numbers and we can never really “beat” them because they can afford to commit a larger number of people to just power rezzing people that get downed, and even fully downed. So I propose two changes:
1. Most straightforward → spike/death = rez. You can’t get rezzed in spvp so why can you in wvw? I don’t even care if this applies to pve or not, I think it negatively affects wvw.
2. Give each class a new ability slot, “Resurrection” or some such thing. You would be able to pick from either a single target rez or a group rez. Example for guardian:
Brother in Arms: resurrects one target and applies stablity and aegis to them when they are revived. (30s – 1m cd)
Aid to the Fallen: (ground targeted) resurrects up to 5 allies in the target area and raises a sanctuary around them. (2 min cd)
etc. for each class
Just an idea since I do find the current system a little frustrating at times.
Fixed amulets are there for a reason, not because PvP players are dumb. They are there just to avoid unstoppable warriors with 3000 armor, 50/60+ crit dmg, 2000+ power and 24k HP.
Uh… add more power and you can easily get that on a warrior in pvp… I know I have one.
Instead of making a “balanced playing field” gearing issues hold back a lot of builds that can utilize a diverse gear set. For example I absolutely love my d/d ele in wvw but would never play it in spvp simply because its impossible to get adequate stats. What it does do is make classes with high baseline stats (i.e. warriors) ridiculously dominant.
Downed state is one of the few things that adds a little bit of a skill layer to this game, except for some insta-rez skills.
That’s the thing though, I would rather they add another ability for each player. Call it your “Ressurection” ability. You can either pick a single target rez on a fairly short cd or a group rez on a longer cd, etc. Could make them different for each class. For guardians the single target rez could give the target Aegis/stability, the group rez could raise Sanctuary around the area (2-3 min cd then).
Ele the single target would give a different buff depending on what attunement they are in, regen for water, swiftness for air, etc. Group rez drops a healing rain and static field around the targets or something like this.
I just feel that this would provide “skilled gameplay” rather than a pretty lazy mechanic like the downed state and would improve both the spvp and wvw environment. These would also only work on players in the downed state and a successful spike would instantly force you to WP rez.
In principle I think the idea of some kind of “redemption” and being able to help your teammates is a good one. However today I had multiple 1vX in solo queue tpvp today where I would continually down one of them but could not spike them before their teammate rezzed them. This is bad in 1v2 and even worse for 1v3 where even with stability and immediately starting a spike animation there is no way you can beat one or two people rezzing someone if you are by yourself (i.e. without other damage incoming to keep them down longer). It was exceptionally frustrating.
I think rezzing someone should take longer and should definitely not be faster than the spike animation. Either that or start them off with less “downed hp,” but I think this is the worse option.
Sure it’s GWEN in zergs but take those same players and put them in a roaming environment and they would get annihilated. Roaming is dominated by condi bunker mesmers, thieves, engis, even good rangers (they do exist), along with your occasional glass thief. Your traditional zerg warrior doesn’t stand a chance in hell against any of the roaming classes I mentioned. All I am trying to say is that every class does have a strong build, it just doesn’t work everywhere.
Something that I feel really needs to be mentioned here is that warriors are boring as kitten. I have an ele (d/d or staff), ranger, and warrior I use in wvw and honestly I almost never pick my warrior to play anymore, even though it has the best gear, just because it is so so so boring.
That being said they do basically everything better than rangers with about 1/5th the effort (if that). Only thing rangers shine at is roaming and that’s because half of roaming is taking out NPCs and the other half is killing power zerkers with a condi bunker spec… oh wait any condi bunker can do that…
I do like ranger GS abilities a lot more than warrior at least.
I did play a ranger. I tried to make a ranger work in wvw for a long time. By work I mean actually being good and not just “good for a ranger.” Then I played a warrior for 5 minutes, lol’d at myself, and salvaged all my rangers gear.
People who try to defend rangers are in denial. People who say rangers are hard to play confuse difficulty with poor and broken mechanics. Literally all you have to do against a ranger is move. Their pet will not hit you and they instantly lose a large portion of their damage. If they are using ranged weapons? Lul at them and smash their face in because their damage will be pathetic. If they are melee? Well they can actually do some damage if they are using sword but they will be squishy as kitten.
Basically rangers have flawed class mechanics and I dislike people who defend them because despite what you think, they are bad. Why when I play a MM necro can my minions make some transitions on the z-axis while my ranger’s pet NEVER EVER does. Oh but you can just pet swap to get it by you, they say. Well since it will likely die in the next 20 seconds welcome to a minute of no pet at all.
tl;dr people don’t like rangers because they are bad, if you defend rangers you are probably bad
edit: I was pretty harsh there, sorry I’m sick, but rangers need some serious work
(edited by gpassucc.5961)
There will be two types of people posting on this thread, those who say: “nothing you can do about that its just gonna happen” and those who say “OMG GET GOOD l2ZERG LUL BADZ” I will say neither. you kill those mother kitteners, you tee bag those mother kitteners, you dont call for reinforcements and you die gloriously in mother kittening battle. YOU WILL NOT RUN UNTIL YOU SINGLEHANDEDLY DRAW SWORDS!
Probably one of my favorite posts I’ve seen.
Sorry, should have explained that better. Since I assumed you were going for a more support/defensive build (good to start out with for sure) I would advise both Cleansing Ire and Quick Breathing. If you also get runes of the soldier you will have a lot of support for a small team or to help in a zerg.
edit: I’m pretty sure soldier runes let you cleanse a condition with a shout, but might want to double check
Two quick things right off the bat. I know you are thinking Quick Breathing gives you enough condition cleanses, it doesn’t. Pick up cleansing ire as well instead of Last Stand, it is incredibly good. Second, Warrior’s Sprint in the adept slot of the discipline line is basically a must have for any wvw warrior build imo. While yes you can maintain 100% uptime on swiftness with your build the beauty of warrior’s sprint is it cannot be taken off you so you are guaranteed to always have 25% movement speed increase. This is especially important when you are using two melee weapons.
Also, if you are really set on using a shout build you might as well just use three shouts. Dolyak signet is nice but since you are pretty committed to shouts might as well swap it out for Fear Me or On My Mark, both of which help a lot in group and solo play.
I see you went with (nearly) full soldier’s gear. This isn’t a terrible idea if you are just starting WvW but once you get some experience I would gradually swap out more and more pieces for berserker. Your crit and crit damage are both very low so you will not be doing much damage. I run zerker gear, melandru runes, soldier trinkets with ruby orbs in them (all exotic stuff as well) with zerker weapons and I don’t feel squishy at all when I roam or zerg and can still do pretty good damage (12-15k hundred blades).
Another consideration is that, imo, this is a very defense/support oriented build. While this is nice it is also nice to smash people’s faces in from time to time. Get used to using a GS. Hundred blades hurts, a lot. Experiment with the different ways to land this and you can eventually switch to a more offensive build once you have more experience. I really like GS/hammer and getting 100b off during earthshaker, or GS/sw-sh and 100b during Flurry immobilize, or mace-sh/GS 100b during mace burst stun. Best thing about warriors is there are a TON of builds that are not only viable, but straight up kick kitten . So get some experience and you will find a build that works well for you.
edit: hee hee, kick kitten =D
I almost always roam in WvW, since being part of a mindless zerg just isn’t really my thing. I have also pvp’d across various MMOs for about 11 years and emoting is a huge pet peeve of mine. For example when I am winning by a large margin against someone and they escape via zerg/npc help and start emoting me…. I just don’t get it. So you are good at running? Congratulations? At least when I tuck my tail and run I know I’m being a kitten who doesn’t want to die. To each their own I suppose.
I run a mostly zerker/power armor set with a few defensive trinkets for roaming and generally use sw-sh/gs. This combination brings some really nice things to the table for wvw. Basically with this combo your big damage comes from two sources: hundred blades and final thrust (when target is under 50%). I actually usually use 0/0/30/10/30 for leg specialist as this is soooo good when using sword. Spiked armor is also invaluable imo for roaming as you can have ~60% uptime on retaliation and this can also be used with hammer by swapping traits.
One thing some people do not know is you can use a 3 adrenaline F1 on sword, swap to gs and use 100b. The target will have a 3s immobilize from sword F1 and basically has to eat a full 100b, follow this with whirlwind, savage leap back to them (cripple = immobilize), shield bash, final thrust, gg.
Two things I find very useful are balanced stance and zerker stance. Using these while you get a successful burst off prevents you from being cc’d and being blinded (i.e. thieves/necro plague form).
Hope these tips help, happy roaming.
Hello,
Since I am abandoning my attempt to make power rangers work I was wondering what people have tried as far as condition based gear in WvW. Ideally I would like to be able to keep the same gear for a trapper build and a spirit/roaming/quasi-bunker type build. I was thinking some mix of dire and rabid to get relatively balanced stats, but would appreciate anyone sharing their experience as to what worked best for you with different builds.
Thanks very much for any replies!
…..
WvW: a word of warning, ranger is the #1 hardest profession to excel at in wvw, that is because the skill level required to master your ranger to the point where you stand on your own feet over a bunch of enemy corpses is… frankly quite high. Simply because wvw is full of never ending gotcha’s.
…..
Snipped some of the quote to save space. I just wanted to say that oftentimes people will say rangers have a “high skill cap” in WvW, or in PvX. Truth of the matter is, the ranger class itself has some inherent design flaws that create this “skill cap” when in reality it is just having to overcome these flaws and not difficult mechanics in and of themselves.
What I am trying to say to the OP is, are rangers a sweet class that has a lot of potential? Do I love the ranger GS more than any other GS in the game? (idk why but I do) Can rangers be “good”? Can you change the minds of people spamming “LFG no rangers”? The answer to all of these questions is yes, but the effort required to do so on a ranger is far higher than other classes.
This is further compounded by the fact that rangers are by far the easiest class to level and solo with due to having a pet, which gives you an inflated sense of how good the class is. My 80 ranger has soloed almost everything I have ever come up against (champs included). Rangers can be beast mode at soloing PVE-wise in WvW such as supply camps. No class better at soloing supply camps and random stuff like that in wvw than rangers imo.
tl;dr rangers aren’t that hard, the class has daddy issues, if you want it keep after it
Thank you for the replies, a lot of good stuff to think about. I am also planning on using this for WvW eventually just didn’t have time to put the WvW gear in this morning into the build. In that case I will probably just get used to using sword and axe, most likely more axe in spvp and more sword in WvW since mobility with sword + GS is just disgusting.
So the past few weeks I have been running a sword sword/LB condi build and would like to switch back to a more traditional power build since I miss it a bit. The build (just for spvp at this point) I have come up with is as follows:
http://gw2skills.net/editor/?fIAQNAR8ejkOxwpQGPMxBE0DNsKEQjifAIUKmjNE-TsAg0CnIMSZkzIjRSjsGNIYRwuDA
I have always had a tough time moving away from spiked armor in the defense line since I think it is a really amazing trait and better than the GM traits in strength/discipline. My question here is what are people’s opinion on sword vs. axe for the mainhand with shield in this build? I like sword for the mobility and final thrust but the axe burst skill is much better imo. If I went axe I would probably drop spiked armor and pick up either XI in strength or XII in discipline. If some experienced warriors could share their opinion on
1. axe vs. sword (main hand)
2. XI in strength vs. XII in discipline
Thanks for the help/advice!
p.s. also any general warrior advice is always appreciated. I have almost always played a sword sword condi build on my warrior so am not very used to playing a power build.
edit: forgot to add utilities and elite in build
Try this,
Uses a lot of the new traits and S/H
I have been using for tourneys and it is surprisingly performing. You really do a lot of damage when enlarged.
I guess I’m a little confused why you would use axe in that build instead of just LB since it’s a power build. Also imo wilderness survival has a lot of exceptionally good traits that I can never really part with no matter what build I run. I hate it so kitten much that we need to go 30 in marks just to get the active effects of signets, so kitten stupid.
Ironically I play a warrior and was going to ask necromancers on advice on how to counter them… However I play a sword sword / LB condition build which necros are basically immune to. I just hate the hammer playstyle so much. So I guess don’t feel bad, just avoid hammer warriors and go for condi ones instead =) At least necros are the only profession I have any trouble with.
I will say the amount of mobility almost any warrior build has is pretty kitten good (maybe too much). I can basically get out of any situation and I don’t even use a GS
I agree with killahmayne, having retaliation up constantly from the defense line is really, really good from my experience. That being said, I love ss/lb in pvp and find it a really fun playstyle. I also agree that the swiftness on crit isn’t really that big of a deal, warrior mobility is the best in the game and imo there are better options there.
But… but…. how would warriors kill me from range before my pet even gets to them then? OP!
In all seriousness though I am getting really frustrated doing absolutely terrible damage solely because our “pet based” class is doomed to rely on a pet who apparently is hungover kitten since he can’t even walk straight half the time. I love the ranger class and have always played classes like this but pet AI combined with how the maps are designed makes pets essentially useless, leaving rangers as really, really, REALLY crappy versions of warriors.
The sad thing is that even with this change I am sure they would not pounce over ledges etc. and would still be “vertically challenged” so I doubt people would even notice this, much less cry about it being OP.
I do like the idea though!
(talking from the perspective of pvp, mostly spvp, for reference)
I guess what I was trying to say is that pets are so bad right now that if this was implemented ALL rangers would (probably) pick the no-pet option. Considering pets are our “thing” that really doesn’t seem like a solid solution. I like my pet on my ranger, I like being a ranger, NOT a warrior with traps. Pets can and should be useful if they would only actually put in the AI to make them so. Every time in pvp I hit F2 and the skill just goes on cooldown without being used I want to curb stomp my kitten.
p.s. hunter pet AI was much better than warlock pet AI. Also Beast Mastery was the highest parsing dps spec for hunters in pvp and pve. Even Demonology (the pet focused Warlock spec) chose the sacrifice option instead for optimal dps.
This sounds like a good idea but it should not be implemented because it is actually terrible. Speaking from experience I played a warlock in World of Warcraft from vanilla to panda land and everyone complained about pet AI. So what did they do? Made a talent that sacrificed your pet for a buff. Guess what? Every person in the entire game picked this talent so they nerfed it to hell and I think it is going to be removed. It was a fiasco for the entire pandaria expansion pack.
A band-aid solution like this doesn’t solve some of the core problems with the ranger profession. So while this sounds good on paper I guarantee it would be detrimental to the class in the long run. And anyways rangers without pets are basically just warriors with less survivability. I love rangers in this game and honestly it’s the only profession I ever want to play despite having to micromanage the pet, the bugs, etc.
Sorry, I had to do it…

Just wondering is that image from the swtor sorcerer debacle when the devs told them to “make them pay?” Made me chuckle even if it isn’t.
Thanks for the response, I seem to be faring alright against warriors except the few I run across who literally take no damage and literally tear me to shreds in seconds. In the time it took a warrior to take me from 100 to 0 I got him to make 90% >.<
It pretty much seems like a ranger has to play out of their mind to win against another class hehe oh well time to practice
Also, what the hell can you do to counter anything that uses conditions?
As of right now I generally run some variation of this build:
http://gw2skills.net/editor/?fMAQNAV8YnAVUZZkFWBxahgYVIPtHcq/nnpwQJyVw/V8RK
I have no idea if this is “cookie cutter” since I usually try to generate a build on my own before looking at builds others have made. I also swap out “Sic ’em” for other abilities pretty frequently but I like the burst it can generate when combined with the lynx leap. I generally try to keep as many conditions as possible on my opponent and try to utilize the amounts of evades the sb + s/d combo gives.
I guess what I am looking for some help with is warriors. I generally do well against any other class 1v1 but it just seems like warriors can easily mitigate/heal through my damage while simultaneously wrecking my face. Is this just a warrior thing? Are rangers weak against warriors? Every other prof I have had trouble against I was able to tweak my build and get better against them but most times warriors clean my clock. Any advice from more experienced rangers would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!
P.s. I understand rangers are not generally considered “good” so please no responses along the lines of “reroll” etc. I really don’t give a rats kitten if a class I play is considered good, I just play what I enjoy which has always been ranger type classes. ty!
