This is related to something that I was wondering. If you fight Tequatl and get him past 75% and defend a battery and get one dragon bag, then later in the day you fight him and beat him, do you get more dragon bags? Or do you get nothing the second time because the one dragon bag counts as your event reward for the day?

As for OP’s question, I am pretty sure failing the event does not ping your daily event reward box. I have definitely fought and failed against Teq and gotten a dragon bag reward later on the same day. What may have happened is you didn’t participate in the battery defense which is required to get the first Teq dragon bag, for example, or for some reason there may have been a bug to prevent you from getting the reward you should have gotten….

Can NPC Kamma weapons help against Teq?

in Tequatl Rising

Just to the north of the Tequatl battle area is NPC Kamma who sends you on a quest to test her elmental weapons. It is also, sort of, her laser apparatus that is used in the Tequatl fight. I was wondering if anyone has tried to use Kamma’s experimental weapons to advantage in the Teq fight? They are quite powerful, and would give the zerg that is DPSing Tequatl a big advantage.

I couldn’t test this today because I accidentally finished the quest and she won’t give me the weapons anymore. Has anyone else tried to use those weapons in the battle against Tequatl? Even if they were bound to a certain area on the map, you might be able to use them against minions on the west turrets.

Just an idea I haven’t been able to test yet and wanted to throw out there and see if anyone else has experimented with it. It seems like having these powerful elemental weapons available right next to the Tequatl event might not be a coincidence?

BONUS: check out this sweet screenshot I grabbed from a Tequatl event today:

the problem is that the whole game favors zerg. In other games the design is to favor the side with less people so that things balance out or at least the playing field is even between the larger army and the smaller army. In this game the larger side not only doesn’t suffer it benefits from every game mechanic. Everything from AoE limit, to downed state, to rally . to small maps , fast group run speed. The way seige is built (by number of supplies). Everything is implemented to favor larger army over smaller ones. So it really isn’t a surprise that the new stuff also favor the larger servers and their zergs .

edit: Forgot to mention even the way wxp is headed out favors larger zerg.

Quoted for truth. Nice post. It would still all be fine if they could balance server numbers better, but if they can’t do that then they need to find some other solution; amazingly they don’t even see the problem….

Ascended vs Exotic (Math)

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

incandescence.6784

It’s not trivial difference. I got jumped by a guy dual wielding legendary swords in WvW and he did more sustained dps than I have encountered up until now in the game, also he was not glassy build based on how well he took damage. And he had been recently downed (by me) and chased me half a map before I decided to re-engage, so he didn’t have any 25 stacks of might. Why do you think they kept ascended out of sPvP if the difference is so trivial? 10+% damage difference is a lot (remember best weapon sigil gives only 5% damage bonus), if you add up all ascended gear character versus all exotic gear character it is a huge difference.

It’s an anecdote, ok, but what I am saying is my experience in WvW is that legendary/ascended stat weapons are noticeably stronger now than what the rest of us are wielding.

Regarding Stealth and its "Concerns"

in Thief

Posted by: incandescence.6784

incandescence.6784

I think most people need to play a thief before they complain a lot. It is one of the harder classes to play in the game, if not the hardest. Even a really tanky thief dies easily, and thieves that are heavily traited in stealth don’t do a whole lot of damage.

As for the guy who claims thieves are overpowered and he is a thief who only ever loses when it is 20 men to 1…… Well the fact he said he only loses 20-1 pretty much sums up how much value to put into his statements about the class and his supposed experiences.

People need to stop and think about the whole concept, “But he can just run away whenever he wants….” and that thief does, doesn’t he? These thieves that can run away whenever they want… HAVE TO RUN AWAY, BECAUSE THEY ARE WEAK and die easily. That is the nature of the class, why is he running away, could it be because he doesn’t want to die? So if he is running away to not die, then what is so imbalanced about it again?

Do you know how kitten boring it is to run around in stealth all the time and try to get some sneak kills in and run away without dying in WvW? Holy moly, if you really want to visit that on yourself roll a thief and do it, but it is harder than you think and you have to spend so much time avoiding the real action in order to not die.

Thief stealth is overrated and players who never used thief have a lot of misconceptions about it. Somebody back earlier said thief can stealth to avoid Legendary Defenders… I’m pretty sure that’s not true; seems like last time I encountered a Legendary Defender while stealthed it gibbed me the instant I entered its radius.

I don’t have a problem with adding counter-stealth type of things into the game per se, but I do have a problem with nerfing a class that is already pretty hard to play compared to others.

Do you hate Trahearne?

He orders you around like a lackey, showing little respect, and there is no justification whatsoever as to what is so wonderful about him and why he should get to do so. He’s incredibly arrogant and condescending. And your character is like, “Yes, sir! Sorry, sir! Can I please lick your boots, Trahearne?” It’s a crock of poo-poo, doesn’t fit your character (certainly not mine), doesn’t really fit the story at all.

Easiest way to sum it up for me is that the personal story becomes incredibly boring, irritating, and a chore once Trahearne is in charge.

The way the whole focus becomes centered around Trahearne’s character and for no apparent reason is quite strange, there really must have been a developer there at Anet who just fell in love with him in a semi-real way, just had a passion for this Trahearne guy, and managed to inflict their bizarre fetish onto the million and one rest of us.

It would have been sweet if they made an important underwater spot to fight over in WvW, that would have added an interesting dynamic to the game, but you are totally right they seem to be removing a lot of it. Probably because the underwater content is unpopular, but that has to do with things like poor camera, poor skill balance for underwater, etc.

It’s almost like you are nerfing yourself if you don’t put 30 points into critical strikes. In terms of killing things/players it is by far the most powerful trait line. The real question is what to do with your other 40 points after that.

On the other hand if you are just doing a build to have fun and do crazy stuff, or you want to try to make a thief based on condition damage, etc, then Critical Strikes is the most boring trait line.

I think our signets are underwhelming.

in Thief

Posted by: incandescence.6784

incandescence.6784

I can’t figure out anything else that is worth the passive benefits of the signets. Signet of Power raise my strength almost 10%, that is a huge damage bonus. If it was a trait, it would be a must have trait. Signet of Agility raise my crit rate almost 10%, once again if it was trait that strong it would pretty much be required. 25% movement bonus in Signet of Shadows is also hard to get away from for WvW or running around in PvE, depending on your build. 25% always on, never think about, passive speed boost is pretty useful.

I don’t generally use the active aspect of any of these, except I recently started using the 5 stacks of might on signet use trait and I use signet of power with that, otherwise use of signet of power is just a way of reducing your damage output since it is barely better than the passive boost (you loose passive boost when you activate it, so it gives you -~10% str, +15% damage, so it is like a 5% damage boost for kittens then 30 sec cooldown or whatever, much more damage in most situations by not using it).

Guide to Thief Leveling

in Thief

Posted by: incandescence.6784

incandescence.6784

Nice work.

Well, it’s important to realize that in this game grinding mobs is probably the slowest way to level up. WvW is a great way to level, you can also get some quick levels with crafting. Doing quests and map completion stuff will get you levels pretty quick. As far as builds go, you’re pretty much going to reroll your build completely each time you can retrait; get what you need for each level tier, don’t aim for what you need at level 80 when you are level 25, because you are just going to die a lot then.

In terms of staying alive, always be moving, use your dodges, stealth out and regroup when you need to. Always have shortbow handy, learn to use infiltrator’s arrow (5). Recognize the value of shortbow autoattack, since it bounces between foes it is a very powerful AoE attack that you can spam constantly everywhere while running and dodging.

It gets better, although I think thief is one of the harder professions to play right now. Was just playing around with Warrior a little bit in PvP and it was so easy to play compared to thief. Keep your gear up to date, use shortbow a lot to kite your enemies. I remember it was pretty hard for me too when I was a low level thief trying to PvE by myself.

Switching to another character type isn’t a bad idea either, before you are too invested. Heavy or light armor is much cooler, medium armor you are pretty much limited to wearing a buttcape.

Serious Idea - "Super Legendary"

in Suggestions

Posted by: incandescence.6784

incandescence.6784

Hi Everybody,

I just wanted to say now that everyone and their dogs is getting the Legendary weapons, some people even have many of them, and then everyone else that is too softcore for Legendary is Ascended now, we need a new top tier weapon for the best of the best, it would be the truly elite weapon like what Legendary used to be. There should be some weapon for the true elite that not everybody and their dogs is going to have.

I call it SUPER LEGENDARY class of weapons. Of course the name of the class does not matter, it could be called ASCENDED LEGENDARY or OF THE GODS or MAGIC AMAZING category too, doesn’t matter about that as long as it is an awesome name that shows it is the penultimate elite.

How does SUPER LEGENDARY class going to work:

If you are going to have a class of weapons that only the truly few and elite of all elite can hold, you have to be sure that most players will never have any chance to acquire it. It should be a big effort to get it, not like the easy way of getting Ascended weapons, or the semi-difficult way of getting Legendary weapons. More like a 2,000 hours of pure gameplay dedicated to getting this SUPER LEGENDARY weapon. For example, it would require not a mere 500 dragonite ore, but 1 million dragonite ore. Just one example. Another example: 5,000 unopened champion loot bags.

You have to bring them to a special blacksmith, of course it take at least 100 hours of gameplay running back and forth from different NPCs to “open” that blacksmith. The noobs cannot even talk to the blacksmith, haha, only the true elites. Of course all those mats will take a lot of room, but true elites have full maximum storage capacity purchasable with gems (this would pretty much be requirement) and then you can give some stuff to the blacksmith that he will keep in queue until you build up enough for your SUPER LEGENDARY weapon, such as that dragonite ore if it is one million.

Obviously, you cannot have a Super Legendary weapon without true reward to honor the effort and work that went into it. For example, it would not a huge stat bonus compared to other players, but at least 25% stat and damage bonus more than Legendary weapons. Everyone on the screen should know that they are in the presence of a true super legend when you hold this weapon, after all it took more than like 2,000 hours of work to obtain. The Super Legendary weapon would glow with a blinding beacon of light that shines all the way to the sky, it should be visible to anyone anywhere on the map. And it would be prominently marked on the map like commander tag, but look much cooler, everyone should know if they are in the presence of a truly elite SUPER LEGEND that has managed to craft such an incredible weapon. Of course footfalls should trail like with LEgendary weapon, but they should be bigger, like each footstep the size of a Dolyak caravan, and each time your foot hits the ground the screen would shake for all characters within 1500 range. Now they know they are playing with power! When you kill someone with this, there is an amazing Finishing Move animation and it says on the mini map for the whole map (sort of like commander tag) “Slaughtered by Legend” just in tiny letters really fast.

Of course if you do that much work to make a Super Legendary weapon you should not just be left out in the cold with Account Bound crap. What if you decided you made the wrong one and you want to make Hammer instead of Greatsword? You should be able to sell it on Trakitten ost, probably for like 500 million gold I guess, but you can set your own price.

Ok, that’s what I wanted to say. This isn’t only a discussion about Super Legendary weapon, the bigger issue is how Legendary weapon is so common now and it is needed to have a true elite set of weapons of the true legends in this game. It’s almost a joke now that everyone has Legendary, you should change the name in game to “Legendary” with those quote marks, haha.

Thanks!

By saying that Legendary weapons will always be upgraded to the highest possible stat available, they are tacitly admitting that they plan to introduce further gear progression in the future, in other words a gear treadmill. If this were not the case, they would just say that Legendary will have same stat bonuses as Ascended, but they went further and said that Legendary will always in the future be upgraded to match the highest available stats, that means they already envision introducing higher gear than ascended in the future.

Time Gating Is -> NOT FUN

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: incandescence.6784

incandescence.6784

Time gating (I mean the Anet style time gating as done with charged quartz) is so kitten boring, do you guys really know what you are doing by adding more of it? Do you know how boring it is to log your alt into place of power and craft charged quartz every day? This is the definition of no fun at all.

I have seen some games before that do a kind of time gating that works well — the stuff happens automatically, you don’t have to log in and do it once a day like a boring robot. (And of course, using a bot or macro in GW2 to do it is the only intelligent way with such incredibly mind numbing game design, although I do not.) So, in other words, if you want to have a time gate on something like charged quartz crystal, players should be able to program that their character will charge one quartz crystal per day, then it is time gated and player does not have to jump through an incredibly boring hoop once per day before they begin enjoying the game.

This is not a new concept, it is at least 10 years old in MMOs to have games where player characters can automatically do a boring time-gated thing while the player is offline.

You do know that time gated boring grind is much worse than non-time gated boring grind, right? If it takes 8 hours to grind some crap out, you can kind of make a party out of it and find the right time and enjoy doing that grind for a few hours, but if it is a boring hoop you have to jump every day over and over again there is not way to make a party out of that it is just a kitten boring hoop, like adding some random button presses to the log-in screen. That is basically what you did with your time gating, add a bunch of boring button presses necessary for log-in screen. Whee fun, great game design.

This style of time gating that Anet is making into a core element of Guildwars 2 is sort of the worst of both worlds. You have games where your characetrs can do stuff while you are afk to avoid monotonous grind, then you have games where you just have to grind and grind, anet makes it so you have to grind, but you can’t grind and grind, instead of getting it over with when you are in the mood for it or you and your friends get together on the weekend and do it together or tackle a big chunk of it, no not like that it has to be slow, tedious torture of anet’s peculiar style of time gating.

All I’m saying is Time Gating is not fun by any standard, it is one of the worst game designs you can possibly have. Yet this appears to be transforming into s a core element of Guild Wars 2 style game play? (WTF.)

Time Gating Is – > NOT FUN

There are people that like to farm. There are people that like to grind mobs, gear, gold. There are people that like to program up their character to do things afk. There are people who like PvP and people who don’t like PvP, there are people who like town clothes and people who think town clothes are dumb but who liek to get the gnarliest looking armor, and there are people who think the gnarliest looking armor is boring but they like to have their pet minicat because they think minis are fun…… BUT THERE IS NOBODY ANYWHERE THAT THINKS TIME-GATE CONTENT LIKE LOGGING IN ONCE A DAY WITH ALT TO MAKE CHARGED QUARTZ CRYSTAL IS FUN! (And running to place of power is even less fun, same thing just more time wasted to accomplish boring bullcrap).

I will repeat it again, because ascended gear or not ascended gear, everyone can agree to this I am pretty sure:

Time Gating Is – > NOT FUN

Just wanted to point that out….

<snip> it’s not the game’s fault. It’s yours.

Not that you’ll listen or believe me, but I know how to tag mobs. After running the with zergs ad nausem I learned where to put my symbols. I learned how to fill my bags with junk. Which is the point you are missing.

What you are trying to say is that i’m bad at the game and that I am not getting any loot. That is not the case. I know I am getting credit for the mobs, my bags overfloweth with junk. If I wasn’t tagging them I’d get nothing.

So basically, regardless of what we say to you, your repsonse boils down to ‘it works for me so l2p noob’…

I’ve said my piece. Thrown in my 2 cents worth of anecdotal evidence. It’s clear now that was a bad idea. I’m done.

Thank you for posting your experience. The RNG situation in this game is interesting. As a relatively new player who has gotten exotic drops fairly regularly since hitting level 80, it is amazing to me that some players could go for months without getting one, or that 60 exotic drops in five months is supposed to be a lot…. I think I have been playing less than a month and I probably get an exotic drop per 2-3 hours of play if I am doing anything where I am killing champion type mobs.

In the current events, with magic find gear on (not max, but with like 150% magic find), I will usually get 5-8 rares and 50% of the time an exotic, per event. And that is not including rares from killing Scarlet if the event completes.

Reading all the (many, many) accounts of extremely “lucky” players who get things like precursor drops and exceptionally rare dyes on a regular basis (not me), I thought there must just be some players lying who are actually buying those rare items by converting $$ to gems to gold, but accounts of implausibly unlucky players truly point to a problem with the RNG programming in the game.

One thing I have noticed is that exotic and rare drops for me tend to clump up, as if there is a lucky time. (And yes, I know because of things like selective recall that there is a psychological tendency to see such a pattern even when it is not there, and I also know that in many gambling games that are being cheated by pro gamblers the suckers always say “oh, unlucky” and “what are the odds” and the pros who have the game rigged say the same thing and then laugh all the way to the bank (not comparing that to anet, just talking about statistics and luck and pattern recognition.)

Champ loot: wrong solution to wrong problem

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: incandescence.6784

incandescence.6784

It’s Anets fault designing the event backwards, why didn’t they make the Aeterblades spawn fewer Champs and increase the number of Champs that spawn from the minion events. Personally I run from one Aetherblade event to the next and totally disregard the main event until the last 10 mins or so. WHY? cause I can kill 5 or 6 Champs per event instead of 4-5 events before I run into a Champ off the minions. After killing Scarlet half a dozen times the event becomes kind of stale. Now I just farm Champs while I can in the hopes that I might drop a particularly nice hammer skin.

Exactly, I don’t understand why people are missing this point. If you assume the developers of the game are doing things intentionally, then they obviously intended for people to farm tons of Aetherblade mobs for loot during these events. It is causing a massive inflation in the game’s economy, and either the developers are incredibly foolish or that is intentional.

The ONLY reason people mob the Aetherblade spawns is because the Aetherblade spawns are much (much, much, much) more profitable than others; Anet made it this way on purpose, so if people are mad about farming of Aetherblade spawns they should complain about the way Anet designed the event, not about the fact that people are playing the event in the way it was designed (focusing on the mobs that are much more profitable than others, which will always happen in every event ever and in real life so it must be assumed that if developers give much greater reward for certain things than others they expect people to focus more on those things).

It is not a factor of 1 or 2, the Aetherblade mobs are probably 10x more profitable to attack than minion spawns and it is absurd to assume that is a design accident.

AND THERE IS NOTHING INHERENTLY WRONG WITH THAT! If you think there is something wrong with the fact the Aetherblades are so much more profitable than other spawns that is another discussion, but it is not obvious that there is anything wrong with it and I don’t understand why many players are trying to consider it a mistake. If you have a big problem with the way the game is designed you should address that issue, not get mad at other players for playing the game.

Myst Forge - Can't Mix Weapons and Armor

Thank you! Funnily enough, I was just posting in a thread about how this game is confusing to new players and this is another example where the game mechanics are arbitrary and unintuitive. Why should exotic gear be treated different than rare gear? I can actually understand some reasons why (having to do with different currencies, changing karma into gold, the fact precursors and legendaries exist for weapons and not armor, etc), but this is a distinction between the mystic forge mechanics for exotic vs rare doesn’t make a lot of “in universe” sense, it’s just arbitrary design that players have to learn the hard way.

New Player: 'This game is too complex'

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: incandescence.6784

incandescence.6784

It’s funny that some people say the game is not complex or confusing. I have been playing MMOs for 15 years and this is probably the most scattered and confusing one. To some extent it is that way by design, which particularly makes the people seem silly saying it is not. For example: WvW, PvE, and sPvP are all huge aspects of this game and intersect in ways that are not at all obvious, intuitive, or common to other games. Compared to most other MMOs, this alone makes Guild Wars 2 more confusing and difficult to grasp.

It is not a hard game to play, but you can spend hours and hours researching yourself, reading wikis and websites and forum posts to try to understand in detail how the mystic forge works (for one example). There are many things about the game mechanics that are still debated, are bugged, or have changed, so even talking to experienced and successful players in game about whether or not sigil of force stacks when dual wielded (for example) will often not give you a clear answer, even though this is a BASIC mechanic of the game that is necessary to know when selecting gear.

I have never played a game before which has 20 or 30 different currencies, as GW2 has, and no there is not much rhyme or reason to the different currencies. To a new player the whole idea of having 20 or 30 different currencies is confusing, let alone trying to understand what all the different currencies are and what they can be used for. Can a karma booster be used to get more karma from your karma pots? Hahaha, not such an easy question to answer today is it? And what is the point of karma pots anyway, should you just use them now or save them for later? These are simple questions that every new player will have because they receive karma boosters and pots fairly early.

There is an enormous amount of temporary event content in the game (mats, currencies, characters turning into candy corn men, etc), left over from the past that is confusing to new players but obvious to those who played in the game when that content existed and got to experience it.

Then you can talk about gearing up, please explain to me what is simple about ascended gear, which gear types do and do not exist, which ones will and will not exist, and what currencies you need to acquire in order to purchase ascended gear. Oh, right, so simple. And what is that PvP gear stuff….. Oh, right, so obvious, lol.

There is so much ego masturbation on these forums, it is kind of crazy. If anyone ever says something was hard or confusing you get an immediate 10-15 people crowing about how easy it was for them. Yeah, you’re a real Einstein, we’re all impressed.

I can no longer combine weapons and armor in mystic forge. Most people in map chat in Lion’s Arch on my server seem to believe it is still possible, and I can’t find any information pertaining to this change when searching the net about it. Is this an intentional change, or a bug? It definitely used to be that you could combine weapons and armor in mystic forge…

I was trying to combine some exotic weapons and armor that I had and have fun rolling the dice; soulbound or not made no difference.
