Should max stat gear be easy to be obtained?

No it should be some what hard to get the “best” of any thing it gives games longer life and give a human a achievement to work for being every one is looking for the next best thing that just a human behavior. This is not just for GW2 its for every new game there is something to work for that is not easy if one wants to be or get the “best” of any thing.
Its a lot like real life and in some ways teaching you good life lessons (nothing going to get handed to you and you MUST work for the good things in life).

“Next best thing” is very subjective. Your “next best thing” is not my “next best thing.”

I’m normally not one to visit forums to complain about things. I haven’t done so in like 7 years of WoW. But this whole ascended gear thing is a mess. Why should I grind fractals countless times when I could be in WvW instead, fighting epic battles? If someone who grinded his heart out in PvE has an advantage over people that do WvW 95% of their playtime, there’s something wrong. That all happened already in WoW Vanilla when people in T3 dominated battlegrounds, and it sucked.

signed,
Someone who doesn’t enjoy running the same dungeon 300 times

Reminds me of the early days of WoW when people were just starting out raiding and almost everyone was in either blues or greens. There was this one horde guild on my server that basically raided nonstop and got all epic gear. Then they would join in PvP and just face roll everyone. They were sub par PvPers but were almost impossible to kill due to their gear.

I look at this whole ascended thing in a similar light. Right now, with only 3 items it’s not really bad but once whole ascended sets and weapons get introduced it’ll be a different ball game. People will basically need to have it to stay relevant in WvW.

Gear needed to participate in endgame content on equal footing should be easy to obtain. The difficulty/price should determine the look of that gear. You can spend 5g and look like garbage or you can spend 50g and look like a real hero and be just as effective in both situations. The main determining factor should be your skill.

The look should be the only difference and there are plenty of people who will strive for it. For example, I spent 10g on two Moonshanks because I love the way they look. I could’ve gotten some cheap daggers off the TP for 1-2g each but I don’t really like how most daggers look in the game and I don’t mind spending gold to get a look I’ll be happy with.

This is where ArenaNet has made a mistake, in my opinion. Cosmetic progression is just as strong of a driving force as vertical gear progression. Gear progression is basically cosmetic progression anyway since all future content is designed around the stronger gear, so the outcome is still the same. You don’t really become stronger, just see bigger numbers on the screen.

This is … just too much. If all that is right I’m not worried. I’m relieved. It means I can quit this game and never come back and rely on all themepark games becoming utter trash in the name of profit.

Just a note… I have been playing EVE Online since last Friday or so, and while the game has a MASSIVE learning curve it really is a blast.

100% PvP, Full Loot Drop, Sandbox-Style game based on being an immortal space ship captain.

I have given up on all MMOs, and all multi-player “themepark” style games.

Yes, Eve seems nice at the start… You will quit in less than 90 days.

Most people that quit eve in 90days do so because they dont’ like the fact that when they die, they lose all their stuff.

Not exactly. I love the concept of EVE and I do play it from time to time. I do hate the control scheme and the fact that so much of the game revolves around huge corporations and their power struggles. Each individual player in virtually insignificant and is treated like a line worker by these mega corporations and coalitions.

It’s basically paying $15 a month to roleplay real life. Oh and as far as that whole losing stuff when you die, if you’re smart with ship outfitting and insurance, you’ll actually come out ahead if you die.

Fractals of the Mists Saved PvE!

I don’t know about the whole “saved PvE” thing. I’m not even sure if PvE needed saving.

One thing that FotM did do is ruin the community. Whereas before no one was barred from content, now you have to be a certain difficulty level to play and if you’re level 1-3, good luck finding a group.

It’s counter to the whole ease of access and cooperation design in the rest of the game.

I’m still hoping that they will read our feedback and rethink their stance on ascended gear. I wouldn’t even mind if they kept the rings and the back pieces which are already in the game. Since there are no exotic back pieces, as far as I know, the ascended pieces wouldn’t be much of a game breaking issue. The rings probably wouldn’t make much difference either.

But adding ascended weapons and armor is the absolute wrong way to go. Especially with how depended on the RNG this whole thing is.

actually the ascended gear does not rely on RNG at all, atleast not to the extent of the legendary precursors

The ascended quivers and books require Vial of Condensed Mists Essence to craft, which is a random drop in FotM.

Ok im not trying to be the dark horse in this conversation, BUT I do think exotic gear level was TO easy to obtain. I think they should continue to add ascended items but then Stop and ensure that this is the highest gear tier forever (a LONG time). This certainly gives those that want more to do some content and doesnt affect those who dont <— This is because anyone with exotics can easily make it to lvl 10 of the fractals.

Depends on the exotic. There are some exotic pieces that are very hard to obtain. Some even worth 100+ gold.

Actually, the wide range of exotics was the beauty of the system, as far as I’m concerned. You could gear up for a few gold, if you didn’t care about how you looked. Or you can spend time and gold getting that perfect looking combination of armor and weapons and have a really unique look.

With ascended, everyone is going to be running around with a quiver or a book on their back. They are the best items so naturally people will strive for them. It homogenizes everything.

Not the whole fractal but the mobs I’m talking about can be soloed. They aren’t elite or veteran or anything like that.

Just make sure you reenter until you get to the swamp zone. I don’t remember the name but it’ll be a swamp and the NPC voice will say something about hating swamps.

RNG grinding is one of my most hated “features” of MMOs. Especially when the grind revolves around an upgrade item. When it comes to GW2, it feels like a step backwards in design.

If it’s any consolation, there is a pretty painless way to solo grind for the essence. Get your magic find gear and go into FotM. You need the swamp fractal, the one with all the traps. Now just continuously kill the mosquitoes, fireflies and spiders there. The respawn rate is pretty fast so you’re basically constantly moving, with very little downtime. I just did it for about an hour and it dropped from a firefly for me.

Now I need 60g+ for the 250 vials of powerful blood and about 10g for the ectos. Those are the bigger grind.

Thanks. So you didn’t need to finish the kitten thing, and could you solo it? Second, can you recall the name?

I had no luck with FotM. I ran it a bunch of times and I’m still stuck on difficulty level 1 due to people leaving half way through. I pretty much gave up on it completely. Running it for over 2 hours just to have someone leave at the end sucks.

Anyway, I farmed the non elite mobs in the swamp fractal. That is the easiest one to farm as there are no elites, except for the champion drake and the Mossman but both of them can be easily avoided.

Just start where the 3 tree trunks are and just kill the mobs in a circle: spiders→mosquitoes→fireflies. There are 3 of each mob type and they respawn really fast, so by the time you killed the last firefly, the spiders are already respawned. Those are the only mobs that drop anything, so don’t waste you time with anything else. Spiders are the only hostile ones but all are pretty easy.

Video games are part of real life, as you say, so same concepts apply. And unlike you I’m not making things up to make a point.

Dude, what are you talking about? This is a fictional universe with a very liberal approach to the laws of physics, amongst other things. Which is understandable because it’s a video game, a work of fiction set in a fantastical universe.

There are no concepts in GW2 that you can apply to the real world. There are some similarities, sure, but you cannot use a video game as a reference to real life. It just doesn’t work.

no. it’s no longer casual friendly. 90 hours per piece of gear to be competitive isn’t casual friendly.

If you want to be competitive then you are no longer a casual player and I’m not talking about gear.

I don’t play games to be cannon fodder either. that’s not my idea of fun.

You play any sports?

Irrelevant, but I am a long distance runner. I don’t consider this a sport. I consider this a game.

Oh it is relevant, would you say you would be able to be a competitve long distance runner just because you got amazing running shoes?

If the shoes had +5 to run speed on them, sure.

What do you think the difference between $20 shoes and $200 shoes is?

Dude, you’re applying real life example to a video game. In real life if you fall 20 meters, you’ll seriously hurt yourself, in the game, you slow down for a second and your health regens to full.

This is a video game, real world examples do not apply.

Um, I’m not talking about fantasy part of the game. What do you have to do in real world to be competitive? and what do you have to do in game to be competitive?

Apparently in the real world I have to put on my +5 running shoes and I’m well on the way to qualify for the Olympics.

Yep just like in game if you got ascended gear you are the best PvPer, amiright?

You’re missing the point, which is that you cannot use real life examples in relation to a video game.

In real life, I can buy a $100 boxing gloves or $20 boxing gloves but neither of those gloves will make my punches stronger.

In GW2, ascended gear will make me punch stronger, regardless of my ability as a player. See the difference?

Please show me where you can boxing gloves that cost $100 that don’t have some kind of gimmick.

Are we seriously having this discussion? The price of the gloves doesn’t matter… Dude, look, please concentrate for a second. Real life and video games are completely different things. You cannot use examples from one in reference to the other. They simply do not apply.

There’s no limit assuming the gear trend continues. You know what they say about people who assume?

That goes both ways.

Did you read the blog post? The whole “this is only the beginning” part? Well, this is only the beginning. There will be more gear added in future patches as per the blog post.

Consider the fact that currently the infusions are only blue quality and that they will be upgraded as times goes by also. Knowing that infusions add stats, it’s a pretty safe bet that performance will continue to grow with better gear.

It’s not an optional grind. The items have better stats and are pretty much a requirement.

Okay well first off, don’t insult me by implying that I’m a WoW player, because the only MMO I ever played in my life besides Guild Wars 2 is Guild Wars. And second, yes, if I like the grind for Ascended gear, more power to me. You have basically summarised my entire point. If I want to do an optional grind, more power to me. Just like if I wanted to do the already-existing optional grind for a Legendary weapon, more power to me. If you don’t want to do an optional grind, then don’t. Because a skilled player with a Weaponsmith sword will beat a crap player with a max-stat Ascended sword any day of the week, with his eyes closed.

What about two equally skilled players one with uber sword , one with crap sword.

Stop being so sensitive. The issue is not skilled player vs noob player. It’s skilled player with exotics vs skilled player with ascended armor/weapons. We can hypothesize about this all day. The fact is that the superior quality items are pretty much a requirement simply because they are better.

I didn’t insult anyone, i just asked a question.

Shoes in real life don’t add +5 to run speed. In this game they do.

Have you ever went from worn out running shoes that you wore for years to brand new running shoes?

I have but the performance increase, if any, reaches a plateau very quick. Not so in this game. Your performance continues to increase with the stats on the gear.

In real life there is a limit, whereas in this game there is none. In the game, as long as your gear increases, so does your performance.

Well it seems like these days when a new game comes out people have this set vision of that the game will be like, and if the actual game doesn’t match their vision then it’s time to launch an attention attack and cry as much as possible.

No. It’s not that we had this “set vision of what the game will be like.” This “set vision” was actively advertized by ArenaNet absolutely everywhere. Comic-cons, gaming-cons, magazines, preview articles. Hell, even ArenaNet’s own blog, Twitter and Facebook.

This vision lasted about 3 months and now we got dungeon gear grinding and hot pink gear. Both of which are a complete contradiction of what was advertized prior to game’s release. I know I purchased the game specifically because it was advertized to not be what it is now, as of this patch.

If you’re all just going to cry over a new tier of items, why even have god kitten items in this game? Why have fine, masterwork, rare, or exotic tiers? It’s too unfair for those who only have lower tier items! We should just eliminate all items for ever so the babies don’t have to do a single run forever.

On another note, did everyone forget that ascended were going to be able to acquired by other methods eventually?

And krookie, I don’t know how you managed to spend 6+ hours for only 25 tokens. My first try there was barely over an hour to finish all 3 fractals. I’d say you just had a terribad group.

Because some of us hate being forced to grind dungeons. we spent 2 hours and didn’t get crap done.

Then you are fools to play an MMO with a tiered item system. What you want is a game where every kitten will always have the same stats so no one is disadvantaged, ever. Regardless of what ANet ever said about their stance on grinding better items, the fact that a tiered item system existed always contradicted that.

So now you can either:

1. Deal with it, quit your crying.
2. Wait for alternative methods of acquiring ascended to be implemented.
3. Quit and find your magical game where no one ever has to face an opponent with ‘better’ gear.

You do realize that this new tier was just introduced and prior to this, the developers were claiming that the game would have no gear grind, right?

And rarely does a concept or a vision ever remain the same at its completion. Things DO change you know. Ideas get scrapped, new ideas are put in place. Nothing can remain the same. All you’re doing is clinging on to a few words from the past.

Concept and vision only really apply prior to the game’s release. Once the game is sold, especially with certain advertized features, you can’t just do a complete 180 and say “well concepts and visions change.” Not after release they don’t. I purchased the game specifically because of certain advertized features. Features that are being thrown out of the window starting with this patch.

I’ll tell you. First run: we did 2 fractals, right as the 3rd starts, one person goes AFK forever. We leave, the whole thing resets.

Second run. I find a group, we finish 1 fractal, right as we get to the boss of the second fracal, 1 person says “sorry I have to go.” We leave the whole thing resets.

Third run. We finish 2 fractals without much issues. 3rd fractal, one person got angry because apparently everyone was a “noob” and leaves, never mind that I just walked him and the rest of the group through the other 2 fractals.

Out of all the runs, from all of the boss chests, I got 25 relics and 1 rare item, which was a ring that doesn’t work with either of my specs.

I’m just so done with this. If you’re going to add a gear grind, at least do it right. I would get much better rewards doing random instances in WoW.

What would bring you back?

Well if they would just downgrade the ascended items to exotics but keep the infusion slot, and make a way to add infusions to our existing exotics, i will gladly come back.

Agreed 100%. I tried the new fractal dungeon grind and it’s not for me.

They were closer. As you can see they are now moving away from that.
Personally i’ve run out of positive thoughts after months of lacking updates – and now this.

They’re “moving away” from it because they introduced new items? rofl you people are ridiculous.

No. They are moving away from it because they introduced an amazingly incredible grind for gear. I spent 6+ hours in the new instance with 3 different groups. I got 25 relics for my time and 1 rare ring.

One of those prototype things cost 1350 relics. In over 6 hours I was able to get 25. At this rate, I’ll probably get enough relics right before GW3 launches.

If you like this grind, more power to you. I’m happy that you have a game that you can enjoy for a few weeks before the next WoW patch. Personally, after 6+ hours of dungeon running and having nothing to show for it, I’m done with this nonsense. At least in WoW, I would actually get something for spending this much time in an instance.

I’m pretty sure there a lot more to do in this game than grinding for items.

Not if you want to stay competitive. Ascended items are the new exotics and you either have them or you have to l2p.

Yet somehow I manage to stay competitive with only yellow gear.

For now.

Can we now get an inspect option?

Absolutely agree with the OP. The game is designed around gear and dungeon grinding and it’s only fair for everyone if we could inspect other players to determine their noob status.

You guys wanted gear progression? This is the only way it’s going to work.

U see the problem? this game is supposed to be super casual, according to their manifesto. That FoM instance and ascended gears are not.
I went in once 1.5hours, 10relics, we stuck @ swamp, tried for about 10-20mins, then i had to go. Come back 6 hours later, ppl already LF1M Lvl4.
Can’t even keep up, being casual that is.

Whatever this game is suppose to be, it’s obviously not for me anymore. The focus is switching to dungeon grinding and I cannot bring myself to do that anymore.

I’ll play out the weekend, check on the new zone tomorrow and whatnot. But I have a feeling that after being a huge GW1 and 2 fan, this one swift patch, completely ruined the game. More than likely, I’m going back to GW1.

I was really hoping to hear different although this is what I expected

I just ran the instance again with a 3rd group and on the 3rd fractal, one of the players had a problem with everyone else being “noobs” and left the group half way through the run.

Basically 3 groups, 6+ hours. Didn’t even go up a difficulty level because people keep quitting or going AFK.

Forget this BS. 6 hours and 25 relics and 1 rare ring later, I officially give up on this instance.

My thoughts on this whole Fractals of the Mists thing is this: I just spent 4+ hours with 2 separate groups running this instance. First of all, the instance with the giant is absolutely amazing. My most favorite instance in an MMO to date.

However, both times, in both groups someone had to leave before we can finish 3. First group, someone went AFK after we did 2 fractals, second group someone had to leave just as we got to the last boss of the second fractal. Meaning that I just spent 4 hours doing this instance and didn’t even go up a difficulty level because someone had to go. Basically, I just ran this kitten twice and didn’t even go up a level.

So far, I got a bunch of blues and greens and 15 fractal relics as a reward. Considering the cost of some of these relic items, at this rate I should be able to purchase one in about 4 years, right before Guild Wars 3 comes out.

So yea, I wanted to give them the benefit of the doubt but this is gear grind to the extreme. I mean WoW is a cakewalk compared to this grind.

PS: whoever designed the swamp instance, I hope you like kittens.

Valve is pretty good. Gaben is the man! Runic is excellent too.

If we’re offering friendly suggestions, then here’s mine: if you want to play as a dedicated healer and/or a tank, why not play a game that offers that option? There is no reason to homogenize all MMOs.

if you dont like the game and new patch just go and play other games dont cry at forums
no “thief is op anet nerf them” “oooo new pacth new gear wtf anet lies” this is a MMORPG if you dont give a lilte gear progresion or somthing similar not to farming for nothing at 80lvl!Tell me a good reason to play the game .For fun ok for fun but farming for what? you take your exotics make crafting at 400 then just farming the oor this is the fun for u?

Srry for my bad englishis not my primary language…

You play the game because you want to play the game. If you need a reason to play the game then maybe you shouldn’t be playing in the first place.

Asking for a reason to play a game is like asking for a reason to watch a movie or eat a sandwich.

Just remember guys no monthly fee, its new content i say bring it on.

New content is the zone, the story, the dungeon. Ascended gear is not content. It’s artificially prolonging the game via the introduction of a gear grind. Which is not actually content. You’re basically doing the same thing over and over just to see some numbers go up.

Ascended stats only work in dungeons.

The longterm problem still exists though. As the gear progression progresses, dungeons HAVE to become harder to do. Otherwise, you’ll get to a point where dungeons really are a faceroll and the progressers quit anyways. But this means that people who stuck to their 80 exotics eventually won’t have high enough stats to complete those dungeons, and thus you have gated content.

From what has been stated by ANet, ascended gear is going to be the the top tier for a while. Possibly even until the level cap raise with an expansion. So basically any future dungeons will be designed for ascended gear in mind which will not be going up in power any more. Once the expansion hits and the level cap is raised, it won’t even matter because all current exotics and ascendeds will be outleveled.

They can go one step further and make story mode dungeons for exotic quality and explorable wings for ascended.

This will probably create a divide between the progression crowd and those who are fine with horizontal progression but only as far as instances go. Besides, once the patch hits, that divide is going to be there anyway. At least this way both groups can world PvE and WvW together without any problems.

I get it ArenaNet, you want to achieve the impossible and appease both groups, those who want a gear treadmill and those who do not. This is how you do it.

The full stats bonuses of ascended gear only work in dungeons and reverts to exotic stats in the rest of the game (normal zones, WvW, etc). This way, the dungeon/gear grinders can get their “phat lewtz” progression and the rest of us don’t have to worry about it and can continue to enjoy the game how we want.

I actually like this. Nowhere in the regular PvE world (dungeons, maybe) do you need super exotic stats. Even just plain exotics is pushing it.

Krookie if you post that in the suggestions subforum I’ll +1 it there too (if such a topic hasn’t been made already, and it probably has)

Took your advice and created a topic in suggestions. I doubt that it’ll do any good but maybe there is a slight chance.

There is a huge issue with the game right now for some people. That issue being the introduction of ascended gear and the presumed vertical progression gear grind that is associated with it.

I get it ArenaNet, you want to achieve the impossible and appease both groups, those who want a gear treadmill and those who do not. This is how you do it.

This way, the dungeon/gear grinders can get their gear progression and the rest of us don’t have to worry about it and can continue to enjoy the game how we want.

To clarify my reasoning a bit, the folks who prefer gear progression always claim that the gear is there to help them with harder dungeons. So make the new gear only apply the stat boosts in the dungeons, where it’s needed, and leave the rest of the game alone.

People who want gear progression to help them tackle harder dungeons get their gear and the rest of us can enjoy the game how we want and still remain relevant. Problem solved, everyone is happy.
