- You don’t need gear progression either. Gear progression is just another MMO’s ploy to get you to pay more monthly fees.
I quite enjoyed gear progression on WoW private servers, and I didn’t pay a dime. They sure got me with that ploy, oh boy!

That fluffed-up copy-paste list that’s full of stuff like “Hang out with Quaggans” and “Give Logan a Wedgie” again? No thanks.

I have never played an MMO where it was as easy to be completely outfitted in max gear as GW2 as it was in GW2 ht last few weeks..
The devs had to do something because its no good if everyone has all the best stuff 8 weeks into the game. Too many people would feel like they had “won” the game and move on.
I agree with you. The devs realized that there is not enough content in the game, and implemented their idea of “content gating” – DR. Except that this form of “content gating” is the worst I’ve seen by far, even worse than raids (a taboo word in GW2 community, it feels like) – because raids can actually be pretty fun.
The amount of bugged content in this game is astounding. I am not blaming the developers, but the marketing team which obviously picked the release date. All of the areas past level 40 are half-baked. Personal story was terribly bugged. The Zhaitan fight is obviously just a placeholder. It’s unfortunate that the game was pushed out by the marketers before it was “ready”, and the developers are getting blamed for it.

Regina also confirmed in one post here that the large majority of players were happy with the game.
How exactly would she know that? Did she personally interview a certain percentage of the game’s population? I also don’t see how your “experts” did these calculations. Post a link to them, please. I’m sure a lot of people would like to see them.

This. I feel like the skill system has been neutered for the sake of PvP balance. A simple, easy-to-balance, opportunity-based skill system such as this is great for PvP… but is utterly boring in PvE where the AI is not smart enough to do any complex maneuvers.
No, there is no free speech on these forums because it’s private property of ArenaNet. Makes sense imho. However, I do agree that the moderators give pretty biased infractions. In one thread, a person made a statement that the “complainers” make up a tiny minority of the game’s player base, and that there was no way to prove the opposite. I pointed out that his claim was just as impossible to prove. Soon afterwards, my post got deleted by a mod for “not contributing to the topic”, while that person’s wasn’t.
I would love to see DE chains that span multiple maps. For example, a large-scale invasion from Orr, that, if unchecked, pillages Lion’s Arch. Unfortunately, I don’t think this could ever happen because GW2’s world is not monolithic, it is divided into large instances we call “maps”. This cannot be implemented in the current model because you have to account for overflows, which are shared between servers; The state of the event might be different on each server, and on each overflow. During such global events, the areas would be crowded with people, forcing some to overflow and making them see a different event state than what they where at before. This is a huge drawback of the non-monolithic world map. Sadly, we’ll most likely never see epic DE’s that span several maps.
I hope so, Eochaidh. I really want this game to do better. GW2 has a lot of potential, but it feels a bit unbaked in its current state. I wonder if NCsoft is to blame…
I’ve never seen any other game where the forums are filled with pretentious posts claiming that people “are conditioned”, “don’t get it”, or “doing it wrong”. I shouldn’t have to go to a forum to read up on how to play the game “right”. It’s the game’s job to guide me, show me how to play it “right”, and show why its way of doing things is better than the alternatives. Judging from all the criticisms, ranging from “lack of endgame” to “unreasonably long and unrewarding grinds for legendaries”, GW2 isn’t doing those things too well.
That’s because MMO’s simply hadn’t been around long enough to garner these sort of responses until now. Having played MMORPG’s now for 15 years, I’ve seen a lot of games come and go and I’ve seen thousands of similar complaints spanning across every game since I started with UO.
Those of us that were around before the positive reinforcement loot model of current MMO’s became standard saw the truth behind behavioural conditioning when it started happening. I remember seeing skinner box threads back when WoW launched and they were largely ignored and/or trolled into moderater closure.
Now the MMO player base has matured considerably, there are more people now than ever that have “seen the light” so to speak. Thus the frequency of these types of posts.
The problem is that GW2 took out a lot features from the current MMO formula without bringing anything to the table to replace them with. While games like UO weren’t as gear-focused, they had interesting mechanics such as a persistent player-generated content, player killing/looting, player-run economies, etc. SWG had vehicles and even starships that could carry multiple people. What does GW2 have to offer? The combat and the DE system are not enough to offset all the cut-out features.

The problem is that the journey to 80 is pretty lacking in my opinion. GW2 spoonfeeds you XP every second. Crafting? Here’s 1/4 of a level. DE? Here’s another! Exploring? Here’s some more XP for you! When I got to max level in WoW, I felt like I undertook a monumental journey. In GW2, there is no journey. Lack of character development only adds on to it. In WoW, for example, I felt like I underwent an epic journey from a whelp who could only swing a sword to a master of weapons, or from a beginning mage to a fearsome warlock. In GW2, there is no such feeling. Character development stops at level 30-40. Incidentally, my happiness with the game declined after I hit level 40 and bought an elite skill. (In my opinion, character progression has been trashed for the sake of PvP, but thats a separate discussion topic.) There is no goal to work towards afterwards. The game ceases to be an RPG and becomes a multiplayer God of War – except even God of War had a lot better pacing of unlocks and feeling of accomplishment, there was always something to spend your EXP on up until the end of the game.

I’m not saying there’s nothing to do after you hit level 80. I know there are 5-man dungeons and Orr (I’m assuming a perfect world where Orr is working as intended). But… that’s it. Compared to other MMO’s, the endgame is very light. So while reaching the level cap is more fun than WoW in some ways (DE’s are great, more action-oriented combat is also great), in terms of character progression GW2 falls flat on its face. So, while the endgame is not on par with WoW’s, the leveling experience in GW2 is not necessarily superior to WoW either, which puts GW2 in a rather awkward spot

Some wow fanboi is angry because MoP didn’t empty GW2 servers and is out to cry? Why is this still not locked?? It serves no other purpose other than create flames, that is OP’s intention from the start. And OP? You DO like to call people fanbois, you done it all over this thread…
You sure showed him! Do you feel better now? Did calling him a fanboy make you feel cool? Did jabbing at WoW help you justify your purchase of GW2?
This is the first game I’ve played where the fanboys dismiss any criticism as people “not getting it”. People shouldn’t have to read a forum post to learn how to enjoy the game – the game itself has to do that. ANet cut off a lot of stale concepts of traditional MMOs while making GW2 – ok, great, but what are you going to offer instead? What’s going to fill this new void? If you have pain in your leg, you don’t chop the whole thing off – you go to a doctor to fix it up. This is what GW2 feels like to me – a man who refused to go to the doctor and chopped off his limbs because they weren’t working right.
@Anishor: Uh, what? How exactly does the WoW progression model illustrate the “Fox and the Hares” problem? In fact, I think it better describes GW2 – there just isn’t enough hares to sustain all the foxes for a prolonged period of time. WoW’s progression model actually provides enough Hares for the Foxes. People raid, and do so for months, chasing that carrot – I won’t go into whether its good or bad, but one thing is that it keeps players in the game until next expac comes. A better analogy for GW2 I think is “butter spread over too much bread” – the game is huge, but its very shallow in a lot of places.

People seem to forget that in their video specifically about endgame, ANet focused on Orr, so they were either making stuff up, or they really considered Orr to be one of the pillars of GW2’s endgame, along with WvW and dungeons. The description of it sounded great, except that when the game finally shipped, Orr was in what looked like alpha stage – broken, monotonous, tedious, neither fun nor rewarding. Dungeons – same thing, although the recent update started taking some steps in the right direction. The only thing that’s really left to do is WvW. So my opinion is that the endgame is there, its just that it’s broken and not fun to play.
I agree. This would cause server communities to be more time tight-knit.
Soon there will be a big mop that will give map chat a good cleaning.

The “shock” that made me realize that ANet madeTrahearne hijack my personal story was during the “Forging the Pact” mission. At one point, Trahearne turns to me, asking me for advice on what to do next. “Great”, I thought, “I wonder which choices will I be presented with now?”. Instead of choosing a path for the personal story, like I did before, My character says “It’s your mission, Trahearne, you make the choice”. What???
Releasing a skeleton of an MMO with an action-oriented combat system isn’t “getting something new in an MMO” imho. Sure, there are many cool ideas in this game, and I’m enjoying myself – but, a lot of things present in other MMOs were stripped out of GW2 for no good reason, really.

I agree with nukularpower. My favorite boss fight by far was Kol. It started of as a “zerg”, but it became clear to everyone that this approach didn’t work. Our group of 30+ people split up into smaller groups, switching in and out of combat, leading Kol away from groups that needed to patch up, ressing other players, and so on. I personally swapped some skills in my DPS bleed warrior to banners to help out everyone else. The boss was big enough to see him telegraph his stomp moves, so dodging wasn’t guesswork for once and melee combat became a thrill. Sadly, no other boss I have fought so far was this challenging or fun =/
