The Forums should also have some sort of What’s New button/ Active topics. In these forums, some sections have bigger audience, others smaller. For example, the most viewed forum section is General Discussion, and the most ignored sectios are Fan Generated Content/Audio. That’s one of the reasons why some people prefer posting in General Discussion, altough their thread might be more apropriate for other forum. Another reason why General Discussion is more viewed is because devs generally post in there. By posting in General Discussion, your thread has bigger chance to be seen by a developper.
A What’s new button would be really useful.

I think that the Forum Specialists will have the huge task to move threads from place to place, mainly because of General Discussion issue.
If Forum Specialists take their role seriously, will Arena.Net staff continue posting on forums as much as before ? People want to communicate dirrectly with devs.

Eventually, I think I would try updating, altough last time I tried I had to rollback drivers, because of imcompatibility issues. Sometimes, even if the graphic card appears supported by a driver, it might not work so well.

I don’t know where could I check it. I don’t think it has something to do with temperature because this problem occurs at game start. If I successfully enter Guild Wars 2, as long as I play, everything works fine. Otherwise it would have crashed during gameplay. It’s like an old car engine. You turn the key, the electric motor tries to turn on the Otto engine but with no success. Once the Otto engine starts, everything works fine. Today I have tried starting Guild Wars 2 for 4 times, but crashed my PC everytime.

Thanks for the advice. Indeed, a combat game is easier to make than a story-driven instance. However…there needs to be some story behind, so the game’s message could reach the players. Mabie the game could be made half storybook, half combat phases. Currently, my first goal is to create the characters and set up basic combat mechanics. After that, I would decide what could I do, depending on my resources at that time.

Medium Shader setting better than high

Hi. Setting shadder setting from low to medium makes the normal maps of the 3D assets to be taken in consideration for higher detail display. It also enables reflections. Setting shader settings to high makes the Guild Wars 2 graphics to look a bit wierd because there seems to be some sort of global illumination that makes the characters look unnatural. (It is like a white glow/aura,visible in any environment) . In my oppinion, setting the shader quality to medium makes the character look better, while maintaining the normal maps effect.

Hi. I think I filled the internet with this kind of ideas but didn’t get any response. The thing is – my dream is to create a Guild Wars 2 non-commercial fan videogame. I have stated this in…a lot of places. Why ? Because no one did this and I consider that a videogame is the ultimate tribute to show that you really like the game Arena.Net made. A lot of people do artworks, pieces of music or write poems. By making a videogame, you simply get a similar feeling of what an Arena.Net developper feels like when he gets a feature done. You simply have the chance to grab similar tools, and learn something on the go. I don’t make illusions of things that I could never achieve. I want to do something that a single person could make. I think that most of the people, when they see my posts, say ,,this guy is not serious", and ignored the treads. I want to demonstrate that I’m capable of doing this, even if the actual development might start after a few years. I am aware that game development is not an easy thing. In my past fan projects, I have modelled a Charr :https://forum-en.gw2archive.eu/forum/community/fangen/Charr-3D-model/first#post3905829 As could you see, I still have to learn a lot.

What I could do – A single player episode, similar to a Living Story instance. Something focused on a short term story, doable by an indie. Basically, in all of this, the most important thing is the message transmitted to the players/viewers. I don’t fear the programming because nowdays there are tools that let me use visual scripting instead of coding. The art creation takes the biggest time.
I concluded that the best way I could proceed is to do the game, then release a video walktrough. After that, I mail Arena.Net and ask if I could release the game, and if they accept, I’ll share the game to the community.

What do you think ? Is this dream viable? Do you advice me to continue ? Should I take other things in consideration ?

Why children don't play a role in gw2?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: mahri.8410

mahri.8410

When Guild Wars 1 started, we met Gwen, a girl who loved to play her flute. That child grew, and had a big part in lore, a lore that expands in Guild Wars 2 (see her grave/descendants ).
In Guild Wars 2, children are integrated pretty bad. There is a single game model, used multiple times, resulting multiple clones. We have no child character/NPC, with a great personality, that could take part in events, including Living World ones.
The question is – Why ?

Each race could have children. Charrs cubs etc.

I guess that developpers fear to introduce them properly because several reasons:

1. The fear of criticism
Do you remember the children implementation in Skyrim ? They couldn’t be killed. I read in a game magazine that hazzardly, some community members made mods to permit this…. This turned in an immorale situation…people were scandalous and Betheshda was put in a bad light. So…this is one of the reasons why devs avoid using complex child characters. In some situations, the script would say that a certain character dies. If it is a child, it would be immorale to die… . Guild Wars 2 is built so the main characters in a story will never die, so I won’t see any problem in implementation…
2. They might consider that most people that play the game want to see mature characters
3. They didn’t tought about this
4. They built another race that could share some of their excitement : Asura

If I am wrong, please correct me.

I would really like to see Guild Wars 2 characters more diverse. This could bring the game more realism, making the game world more cohesive. Each race has its cubs. Where are them ?

I drop here a question regarding content usage. In the future, I wish to create a small non-commercial, fan videogame related to Guild Wars 2 universe. In the content usage page, it says something like this:
[\quote]May I use your art or images for items, such as clothing, toys, or other game-related goods?
Our art assets-be they concept art, in-game screenshots, verbal content, or renders-are all copyrighted materials. Their use is strictly prohibited unless approved in advance and in writing by ArenaNet. Specific questions concerning the appropriate use of our content should be directed to community@arena.net."[\quote]

For example, if I re-model some assets and use them in a fan non-commercial game project, is the permission needed ?

Also, are the content usage rules for videogames the same as for literary and musical pieces? (Non-commercial)

The content terms of use for fan videogames are not very clear. Could someone clarify ? Do Arena.Net tolerates them ?

The single console that could run Guild Wars 2 is Xbox One. Xbox One has the same PC architecture, and inside it runs pure Windows 8. It actually has 3 layers of Windows 8. So…yeah…it might rather come to Xbox One that to Wii U.

GW2 UE4 template for community PvP maps

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: mahri.8410

mahri.8410

What do you think of this idea of the template ? Could this be viable ?

The template could also be used as a way to give feedback to Arena.Net, by prototyping new features, instead of just writing ideas. A chunk of text could be missed rapidly. A chunk of text, linked to a video with the prototyped feature could make the people seeing it understand its full potential.

If such a template would exist, would you develop your custom map ?

It would be really cool for Guild Wars 2 PvP to become an art… something extremely wanted. The whole accent of this game is on PvE. If Arena.Net would make a PvP editor or someone makes such a template, it would be like some sort of free advertising for GW2.

What do you think ?

GW2 UE4 template for community PvP maps

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: mahri.8410

mahri.8410

Hi. Currently, Guild Wars 2 features no PvP editor, and I doubt it will ever have such a feature. What if someone makes a Guild Wars 2 PvP Template for Unreal Engine 4, so that guilds could download it and start BSP blocking their unique PvP maps ?

The template should contain no copyrighted elements. (characters, props…) but share a similar gameplay. For characters, there could be 3 types of blue template creatures, with different animations:

Charr character template (completely different locomotion)
Asura character template (not sure if it needs to have different animations, because human ones could be retargeted)
Human/Sylvari/Norn character template, which already exists ( same skeleton for all )

Once a guild gets the template, they could start building. If they decide to include copyrighted elements, they are not allowed to distribute the game pubicly, unless they contact Arena.net. However they could show videos of their maps, and if Arena.Net considers the maps cool enough, they might think of implementing them in Guild Wars 2.
The template could be Blueprint-based, so the users won’t need to know any coding. However, this has a downside: UE4 built-in networking system has a limit of 64 players – good enough for PvP, in case of small guilds. If a bigger guild wants to extend networking to WvW level, they need to dive into coding.

The template should not be very complex, but neither extremely simple. It should be enough for a guild to play, create, and show the others their works. Also, it is not an actual game, it’s actually a resource for game devs. Guilds make a game out of it by adding art over.

In ending, I mention that I have no plans to create such a template. This is just an idea I got…and wish to know if it is legally possible to make it happen. What do you think ?

Proposal Overview

Guild Wars introduction

Goal of Proposal
Adding Guild Wars to Tyria

Proposal Functionality

Guild leaders could declare War to each other’s guild. In that moment, for all the players in the confrontation, a timer appears. When a guild member goes online, it receives a notification message if he wants or not to participate to the current war. If he accepts, when the timer reaches 0, he must fight the other guilds.

Guild Wars take place all across Tyria. The location of the guild members engaged in war are displayed to the ennemies as islands, and to ourselves as dots.

While engaged in a Guild War, there is a limit of waypoints usage. After you use one, you can’t teleport again for 10 minutes. (this would leave ennemies time to search for you). Also, when they’re closer, you can’t teleport.

The goal of a Guild War is to kill all the members of the ennemy guild that engaged in conflict.

Logging out during a guild war would lower your guild’s war team with 1 member. Logging it back will leave you outside the conflict.

If you get killed during a Guild War, you get kicked out the War.

Winning a Guild War grants rewards such as items.

Associated Risks
Altough this feature could raise the competition and guild collaboration, it could also bring hatred to people. Tyria would become a Guild Wars zone.

mahri.8410

Proposal Overview
In-game tools for creating custom guild events
Goal of Proposal
Guilds organise various events such as sprints, jumping puzzles etc. For example, our guild sometimes organize sprints. It is pretty hard to set a track, because there is nothing interactive that could let us do that. All is done ,,manually’’ . We tell all the guildmates where the track goes, but some of them got lost, other cheat by not going trough our " immaginary " setted checkpoints. At the end of the race, it is pretty hard to determine the winner. A special system for creating custom guild events would be very helpful for a lot of people. There are a lot of interesting zones in Guild Wars 2 where people could build their tracks.
Proposal Functionality
There could be an item/tonic, bought from the guild seller, that when activated replaces some skills. Here is what skills could it include:

1. Place Checkpoint

This skill places lines on ground (looking similar to Line of Warding skill ) , trough which the competitors must pass in the order they were set.

2. Set start

This skill places the start line of the track. The set start line should be bigger than checkpoint ones.

3. Set Finish

This skill places the finish line of the track.

4. Set Reward

Clicking this skill, a pannel is oppened. In that pannel, you could see another three, each one coresponding a place. Each of the 3 pannels contain one gold vallue set box, and under it spaces for placing item rewards. So, the winner on place one could get 15 gold and item A, the winner on the second place 10 gold and item B and so on.

Once the initiator clicks OK, the pannel closes and the skill is greyed, meaning that the rewards have been set. Of course, he could click the button again, altough grey, and modify the rewards.

5. Start Race – This button activates a timer, and places all the guild members in the area on the start line, uncapable to move. When the timer reaches 0, a sound is heard and the race starts. All the guild members could play .

The race system could not only be used for planar races, but also to create custom jumping puzzles.

Associated Risks
People could start races in improper places. If the races pass near a boss, the people beating it would have trouble, because the boss power will be scaled accordingly to the number of players arround. The players involved in race won’t pay attention to the boss and the ones fighting it will suffer.

This could be solved by the system ignoring the competitors around. If you’re involved in a race, the scaling won’t take place for the ones outside the race. However, if you’re involved in a race and you atack that boss, you will give 0 damage to it until you cancel the race, or you will be automaticly kicked outside the race and the scaling fit accordingly.

So…what do you think of this proposal ?

Hi. Just recently noticed that there are some areas in GW1 that could also be found in GW2. For example, the Baradin Estate. I have found out that it looks nearly the same as in GW1 Prophecies, before Charr atack on Ascalon.
Are there more historical locations that you could compare from game to game ? Seeing old things from GW1 gives you some sort of nostalgy. Intesting, Ascalon in ruins(GW2) looks better that Ascalon (no ruins-GW1).
If you remember, in GW1 Prophecies you start in some sort of tiny area.(Ascalon City)-the part with stairs). After Charr invasion, that zone still exists, but in ruins. Was it preserved in GW 2?

I suggest something like this: screenshots of Guild Wars zones, that compare the same zones originally and after a few hundred years. If you find some, you could post some images here to get a better idea about how Tyria changed.

http://m.youtube.com/watch?v=uAlf0-THkCU

The Guild Wars 2 community has a lot of artists. What if they could collaborate to create original cutscenes. Here is how could this work:

1. Some players create the story, and discuss with community artists

2. Artists draw sketches of the story scenes, and discuss with the rest of community what to improove, which sketches they like etc…

3. After this is estabilished, community artists could upgrade their sketches to full work-arts.

4. Some guys animate the layers in After Effects or 2D animation softwares, I don’t know what is the best to use.

5. Some add the music, others voice acting an it’s done.

As themes for the cinematics, the first thing that comes in my mind are Tengus. You might have better ideas.

Guild Wars 3 on Unreal Engine 4 ?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: mahri.8410

When I was reading reviews of this game, I read that GW2 uses a unique engine that they developed in house. It would be nice if Anet would utilize CryEngine 3 or even Unreal 3 for GW2— the program could then utilize multiple core CPUs and GPUs much better. We could then conceivably create community based mods for the game using the SDKs. But that’s calling for a complete overhaul and remake of their engine to use a new engine.

I do not foresee how it would be wise (profitable/ justified) for Anet to completely throw out their unique engine that made GW1 and GW2. They probably poured millions of dollars and thousands of man hours into making their engine before developing GW1.

Publishers usually, unfortunately don’t care of how much work have been put for a game, as long as a new game can bring them much more profit just for the initial hype. As example, the CoD sequels don’t bring something really new to the franchise, some
are really downgraded in quality. However, people continue to buy the games a lot, just by seeing the title CoD in the market. Unfortunately, for some players, the quality does not matter, it matters the name. NCSoft might think something like that, a sequel might grant them better venits just by the name. Unfortunately, sometimes, the initial hype brings bigger venits than a continuously supported game.
