Spent an amazing day in WvW today with various guildies.

Groups aren’t just scheduled, most of the time we put them together on the fly.

Come join us and be a part of a guild that isn’t too busy to lend a hand or, too high to be seen in a lower zone. We’re just good people building friendships with others who are looking for the same low key, no pressure approach to gaming.

We are a smaller guild that has only been inviting for about a month. We have several new and lower level players, like yourself and, though we have several members with level 80 characters, many of them like to run around the lower zones helping out where they can, or mapping and filling out zones by doing events so finding people to hang out with is usually just a matter of asking (if someone hasn’t offered first).

But seriously, I was thinking about your situation and wondered if someone had made an online community for women gamers. Some sort of hub where we can find information on which games, along with their servers and guilds, that are “safe” places for women players. Perhaps even include advice on how to handle and diffuse abusive players, I’m sure we all could, collectively, think of a lot of different things to include.

When I did a search I saw various attempts at the topic in general but, most were blog posts and news articles, nothing like what I am proposing. I am curious if there is any interest or need for this type of site or, would this perpetuate the illusion that we are somehow different from the male gamers.

I didn’t notice anyone else mention it but, there is another option; start your own guild. It can be a lot of work but, it can be very rewarding as well.

I have run into the “woman” issue forever; in jobs, “Oh you’re a manager?” click; in games, “Girls don’t play, just guys who lie.” and so on. And on and on…

When I read one of the comments that suggested you not bring being female up at all, I had to cringe. That just reminded me of trying to change my pronouns to hide the fact that I am a lesbian just because it might make someone uncomfortable. Pretending to be something I’m not makes ME uncomfortable.

Being a woman who games is who you are and trying to hide that from anyone is just ridiculous. You couldn’t and still be on Voice chat anyway. Well, I take that back, you actually can… for a while I had a guild who thought I was a young boy, but I digress lol.

Keep looking, you have a good handle on what you need and, if your research doesn’t pay off, seriously consider becoming a guild leader and paving the way for other competitive women. You never know who (women and men) might be interested in just what you have to offer. Don’t move to the “ghetto” as you said, build your dream house.

My background: I’ve run or been an officer of half a dozen guilds over various MMO’s.
Rozcinana is right, smaller guilds can have leaders/officers a lot busier than a large one, it’s just a different dynamic with small guilds. Larger ones tend to have lives of their own, smaller ones tend to be more personality driven and, for me at least, feel more like a family.

Your original question, “what are a guild member’s responsibilities?” has as many answers as there are options. Barzmon has a really cool idea but one that can go south really fast if you get a bad human being in there with you.

Having been bitten once or twice in the past, I tend to go with the traditional hierarchy in my guild. Get to know people and have them work their way up the ranks. One hopes to find Officers who are willing to share the “burden” of running a guild together, people willing to set up events and help get people organized and achieve their goals within the game, manage the guild bank and resources, recruiting, etc but, if there is no one willing to step up, then delegation becomes impossible (which is a problem that can be especially hazardous to a smaller guild). Anyone could be given any of those things to do and more so there is really no “right” answer to what a guild member’s responsibility is.

The first thing to do when creating a guild is to make a decision about what your goals are and how you plan to execute them; groundwork is the secret to avoiding the type of situation you mentioned. The hard part is to also write in room to adjust and rethink the rules as you grow and as things change.

I opened my personal guild to invites a month ago and, before I asked the first person to join, I had written my rules and expectations for the members and leadership and, I had even written a “So you want to be an Officer” letter, so people would know at every step what the expectation was. It doesn’t mean surprises won’t happen but, it helps to have a rudder in the water guiding the ship before you hit stormy weather.

Even though you aren’t in it any longer, your guild (with you in it) might still be saved; it just depends on the type of people you are dealing with, if they can forgive and forget the things that were said and move on to create a more complete vision so everyone understands what is expected of them. If they hold grudges, be glad you are done with them now.

Aside from that, you could always start your own guild but, being new to guilds and MMO’s I would not recommend that as a first course of action. The other option is to simply join another guild (or two or three) and see what you like and don’t like. There’s no harm trying several on for size. When you do though, I’d recommend giving it your undivided attention for at least a month (unless you know right away it doesn’t work for you), don’t rep other guilds in that time, just absorb the one you’re with, get to know the people in the guild.

Also, take some time to interview the guild leader or recruiter before you join. I get excited when I hear people want to shop around and ask me questions first, those are the type of thoughtful players I prefer. If the leadership can’t tell you what they want from a guild member, then don’t be surprised if they end up with similar problems to what you just left.

Until last weekend’s free server transfers we were a medium population server. Our WvW, if you’re interested in that, has been consistently sitting in the last spot. We occasionally get to number 2 but, it provides a great challenge for those people who are looking for one.

We are mainly focused on PvE and do a lot of mapping, dungeons, achievements and so on. Our members are real people with real lives so no one will shut you out when real life comes first.

Well there you go, Aye illustrates my point perfectly; you never know who is paying attention to you. :-D

But he makes an excellent point, the first thing I do when I get on the boards is check out the other posts and see what others have to say. Cookie cutter responses drive me nuts and if I were looking, I would automatically toss out their offer.
One poor soul on here has asked people who respond to name their favorite fruit. This is sad to me because this shows how rarely people actually take the time to listen to the people they want to recruit, and that person obviously realizes it as well.

A lot of people here have excellent advice (RisingDusk’s paragraph about Critical Mass is especially good) so take some time to read them twice (I did) and really think about what they have to say and how you can build on that for yourself.

Another thought that I had, but was too tired to mention this morning (it was 5 am and I had lost my first attempt at a post), was don’t be afraid to stop recruiting when you need to as well. A small guild is kind of like a fish tank, you have to float the new guys in the tank for a while so they can acclimate to the water. With the free server transfers our guild doubled overnight and I’ve stopped actively recruiting people so everyone has time to get to know each other. While I still post and respond to folks, I don’t actively look for them in the game and reach out to them.

I might lose out on some great people in the short-term but, in this instance, it is better for the climate within the guild to let a few people go now than it would be to have an atmosphere where people felt like they were just another number, which is what we with small guilds are trying to avoid in the first place.

And also don’t be afraid to say no. No to perspective members who you don’t feel would work out, and no to current members as well. I’ve had members of many guilds ask to be in officer positions but only for the prestige, not to actually have a hand in running the guild. Make sure the promotions you make matter and try not to appease people because you’re afraid they might walk.

Anyway, it’s time for happy hour but if I think of anything else I’ll post it here.

I basically did the same thing as you, when I didn’t want to be member number 327 and I didn’t want to be in a guild that was never going to recruit, I made my own (or rather, I took the one I had made for extra bank slots and turned it into a real guild).

It is really hard recruiting at first, it takes a leap of faith to join a guild when it has only two, three and five members. But it does get better, once you get about ten people in your guild it becomes easier to recruit because you will have people on at various hours and more to offer perspective members.

One of the biggest mistakes when starting out is not knowing what you intend to build. I had been an officer/guild leader in a few MMO’s before and I was really clear about what I wanted from a guild and it’s members. I took a lot time coming up with my list of “expectations” for both members and guild management, not because there are a lot of rules, but because I wanted to be clear to everyone joining what to expect. That type of thing can save you a lot of trouble in the long run, not just running your guild in the future but now, by weeding out people who wouldn’t fit in with your vision.

The other HUGE mistake that I see is inviting anything with a pulse because you are desperate for warm bodies or numbers for your guild. Take some time to talk to them and find out what they need and pass when you can’t be that. It is much better for your reputation to be honest then it is to try to do something you hate, like PvP for example, just because you think you HAVE to do it/offer it to get someone to join.
Later on you may have people who will do it but, you won’t be trapped by offering something you really can’t provide.

If you’ve made it this far you deserve my two best secrets to guild building. First, work the boards like a fiend, get your message out there, you never know who might be reading your posts/reply’s. Second, group with people and just be generally helpful to people who need it. Relationship building is what it’s all about so put yourself out there and see who needs a hand.

It may be slow going at first but, if you hang tight and keep at it you will build a base in no time.

Hi, I’m with Hedonism on Ferguson’s Crossing. Right now we are on the small side but we are actively recruiting and growing and the people we do have are an outstanding bunch. Chat is playful but respectful and everyone is, without exception, helpful and considerate.

There are people popping on at all hours but 3p.m. to 11 p.m. PST seems to be the strongest at the moment. We are getting people into dungeons, doing Jumping puzzles and trying out WvW (though we are mostly PvE focused).

I would love it if you would give us a shot, I think we would be a fit because we are all about building a community/family first. Everyone is very helpful and we are all experienced gamers. Our members are all levels atm. The ones with 80’s have alts so you that along with level scaling would mean you’d have people to play with when you wanted.

I don’t want to ramble on so please feel free to contact me in game and we can discuss if you and your fiancee (grats) feel like can find a home here. Also if you want to check out our web page I added it at the end.
