Sigils for bows

If you want max damage go with Sigil of Air and Fire. If you want sustain go with 2 of condi remove/condi transfer/stealth health. On a build with low crit chance intelligence and impact might be interesting. Weaponswap > point blank shot > signet of the wild > long range shot.

Don’t want to be rude, but your opponents weren’t the greatest. I would also go with Nature’s protection instead of Strength of Spirit if I would run your stats. You only lose 70 power and the protection might be useful on a zerker build if you run into people that run some tronger builds. The warrior without healing signet and sword/GS was… sub-par to say the least.

I’m not sure we are speaking of the same ranger community. The ranger community who accused a game developer of being a double agent because he posted on the thief forums. The ranger community who wants to stow their pets and get a 30% damage boost (a suggestion very VERY narrow minded, not considering the ranger community at all). The ranger community where a good 20% of posters are sure what the community thinks. The ranger community where players dismiss a suggestion like learning to play your pets properly.

I suggest not getting downhearted by what they are saying, takeing a step back and reading through the CDI thread as unbiased as you can. You will see that they a completely right when they say some of the rangers are suggesting things without clear oversight that would make rangers brokenly OP.

Sorry to burst your bubble, the cast time is not reduced by Read the wind based on what we were told so far. It only makes the arrows travel faster. It will be a faster channel due to QZ however.

As much as I welcome your enthusiasm (its like fresh air to the ranger community) I don’t agree with your views on the new marksmanship and wilderness survival GM traits. I particularly don’t see why you would autoattack an ele casting meteor shower, when you have Point blank shot, and can interrupt instead. And if you can land 2 long range shots on an ele standing still, you can do that without Read the wind too. I get that this will make rangers more of a snipe type prof with zerker longbow, but it has been said by the community for a long time now tha MM bow traits are too much in one trait line. What I think loongbow needs is some sustain, and I think I recall Chapman saying so on an old SOTG as well. They did work on how the bow feels, as they added projectile speed and short range damage as well, and stealth (which is really fun and useful as well). And while I agree with the sentiment of having to choose between trait, longbow power rangers had to do that already. Of sustain and less congested traits Read the wind addressed none. It is yet another trait that makes something basic just work better. The same goes for Poison master as well. It is a 100 per second damage boost on 1200 condition damage and ca 140 per second on 2000 condition damage. At 2000 condition damage you will apply burning and bleeds for damage. Poison is a good addition and it definately has its uses in pvp, but again it is a trait that just makes something a bit better. Its not adding interesting play or a fresh air to condition builds, its just 100-140 more dps. You can already easily have 100% poison uptime without our pets applying conditions. And the fact that our pets applying condition that deals damage off of our traits is just a feature because their condition damage is god aweful to begin with.

Also, apart from Maul and Path of scars pretty much all auto attacks on ranger weapon are the best DPS you can get. Don’t blame ranger for killing you with auto attack, blame the developers.

This is what he probably did. He ran 3 signets, 1 for invulnerability, 1 for stability and 25% damage increase and one for +50% damage on next hit. This latter applies a buff of 16 minutes. Activated signets that give 3 stacks of might, and all zerker gear with probably +30 points into power and Crit chance/damage. He activated 2 signets and hit you hard with auto attack, and activated 3rd signet and hit you again really hard. If you would have distortion or block he deals zero damage to you, he wastes his signets, and is totally defenseless (like the rabbit that got hit for 1kk with maul). Hope this helps. This build is like the signet backstab build on thief… only much worse.

@Terravos You ‘do’ realize the CDI thread ended only a couple of weeks ago, correct? Also everything mentioned in the thread isn’t expected to happen, there’s also the blatant disregard you have for the current Grandmaster Traits in the game at the moment. Some folks do run berserker builds with sword or players who enjoy using Bark Skin’s trait as an indicator to back out of a fight. Do be more considerate of others instead of being an uneducated and utterly outrageous waste of characters on this post I just typed.

I’m not even taking the CDI into account, the last Balance Patch was in December, That should of been more then enough time to come up with viable traits.

As for folks running berserker builds with sword or players who enjoy bark skin, That’s great….I’m sure some people enjoy Bearbow as well..but adding more crappy traits because some players enjoy crappy traits and specs doesn’t make those crappy traits better now does it?

You do know that you sound awfully arrogant and condescending the way you always tell people to “play your way or reroll” ?

I personally agree with Terravos, the GM traits (3 out of 5) are terribad all by themselves. They do however become horrific if you consider the other GM traits.

Based on the amount of heal provided, scaling and changes to Pet F2 abilities this could be anything from ridiculously underpowered to ridiulously overpowered.

It is sad that the only one that seems like it will be genuinely useful is the only one we can’t really discuss because we have no idea how powerful it will be or if it has any kind of cooldown.

This just might be something to help make support rangers feel a bit better in the world of water fields and blast finishers. I did ask for a support heal skill in the BM trait line in the CDI, and this is it. Based on the amount of heal provided, scaling and changes to Pet F2 abilities this could be anything from ridiculously overpowered to ridiulously overpowered. Maybe if more pet skills were blast finishers… hmmm. This could be interesting.

I would take 3 stacks of torment for 10 seconds on a 10 second ICD on my Rabid ranger. Wouldn’t help with survival, but a nice condition addition at least.

My views on Survival of the Fittest:

Survival of the Fittest:
One of 2 traits anticipated by many, even though it just doesn’t have enough condi clear to be taken over empathic bond with survival skills having such high cooldowns. This could (maybe) work on a hybrid build depending on the fury it gives, or maybe with a weird mix of soldier/cavalier/knight stats. Maybe a tanky power build can utilize this skill, but it has to give at least 10 seconds of Fury for anyone to consider this trait over tail wind. Unless the Fury provided is significant and without a 30+ second of ICD I’d say that a sigil of purity is more useful than this skill. And I guess this will be a ranger only fury in a traitline that gives boon duration right? Not my cup of tea based on what we know now, this is something that could be useful for a build or two.

My views on Poinson Master:

When I read Karl’s comments in the CDI thread I got super excited. I hope this was a rushed decision, because this trait seems lackluster as well. Without considering where it is, we are looking at 100 damage per second on a 1200 condition damge build, and 140 on a 2000 condition damage build. That is totally lackluster. And with pets having access to soooo many poison application, why would we need them to apply more poison? Poison should get some utility not just become a bit better (50% on craptastic damage is still only a bit). And this coming when a lot of our traits are just making things a bit better (like giving 350 traits to the pet only), which was also acknowledged in the CDI thread as well. A condi build won’t take this over the other 2 defensive traits ever, power build won’t go 30 into Wilderness Survival and support builds (if there are any) won’t take such a selfish underwhelming damage trait. Poison needs utility, some kind of added effect to make it worthwile using.

This trait seems useless for many reasons. It is RNG, just like spirits, and a passive one as well. Not something rangers were lacking. Then if you look at what weapons take advantage of it seems even worse. Sword and Greatsword are the melee weapons that a ranger could utilize this on, and Sword and Greatsword already have great defensive utility in evades and the block. And then factoring in what damage we could avoid with this and what trait line it is located in it just doesn’t make sence at all. A trap ranger (already having trouble with survivability) won’t take this over the trap trait… see CDI for ranger utilities being lackluster untraited. A berzerker ranger will not go into melee range in pvp, and if it does what build would it be useful again without weaponswap? Staff eles? I just don’t see this being taken ever.

My views on Read the Wind:

Read the Wind:
I think in a PvP setting the worst enemy of ranger is terrain, all those obstructeds are quite annoying. I think I can see what the idea here was, being LB ranger becoming better at point capping (unless they wanted to throw a bone to zerker LB duellers). But I just don’t see this ever being taken over other traits. Beastmaster’s signet is something that a lot of zerker rangers with LB utilize since the passives of signets work really nice for them. Other options are eagle eye, piercing arrows, spotter and I just don’t see this being taken only to be able to hit a player 1v1 at 1200 range. In a group scenario people won’t ADADAD obviously. Its a too narrow effect for such investment. The problem zerker LB rangers face (or other power rangers for that matter) is that investing into survivability comes with giving up too much damage. In case A-Net want’s ranger to be survivalists I think this is the spot to introduce a trait to help keep them alive.

There is actually 1 power build I can think of that will benefit from the patch, and that is the Valkyrie maul build. It will be able to take the WS trait, get muddy terrain to land maul easier, get fury in the process. But what truly will make it better is Sigil of Intelligence, not the trait. Sigil of Intelligence and Sigil of opportunity on GS will be pretty darn nice. Either that or Sigil of Air and Sigil of Intelligence.

Wilderness survival: I saw some comments on a new poison ranger being the new meta in Twitch chat, probably trolls though. No bunker ranger will take this skill over empathic bond.

I’m definitely going to try it. Lately I’ve been running a spirit/shout regen build, and I think I have enough sustain to take no condition removal at all other than HS and SoR (or maybe even see what happens with soldiers runes?)

It’s hard to predict what the PvP scene will be like at this point, so I can’t say if it will work or not. Especially as there were a lot of condi changes mentioned.

This will replace your shout trait…

Ok, here is the no QQ version.

Marksmanship: As they mentioned on the stream this is a wvw/pvp trait. Apart from 1v1 where your opponent will mind your LRS at all, I don’t see the improvement here. And harpoon gun? Its a condi weapon, who would take a 30 point MM trait to buff their harpoon gun projectile speed?

Skirmishing: With the vision of rangers being survivalists I just don’t see this being used ever. Its in a precision/crit damage trait line, so for power builds obviously (or trappers). It is RNG with a low chance, and requires you to be attacking with a melee weapon (sword/GS basically). In sword you have evades on 2,3 in GS you have evade on auto attack, and a block to deal with projectiles. I don’t think anyone with more than 2 brain cells will consider taking this trait.

Wilderness survival: I saw some comments on a new poison ranger being the new meta in Twitch chat, probably trolls though. No bunker ranger will take this skill over empathic bond. And comparing it to the Guardian more powerful burning skill (which I might as well take having rampager armor everything else berserker I have 1200 condition damage) it is just sub par. On a 2000 condition damage ranger this trait gives 140 damage per second. On 1200 condition damage you get 100, while guardians get more than 200. Thes have extreme burning uptime and great synergy with burning application. Again, I don’t think anyone will take this.

Nature magic: This sounds good on paper, but not sure if as a bunker ranger you would want to load up on survival skills. Again, who will take this and why?

BM: This is the only one I see ever being used, may it be BM rangers, or someone trying to heal others on their ranger (is there anyone?)

Did they really mention pet feat to work as an interrupt? Does this mean other canine hard cc will work with Moc???? That would be kind of awesome. Everything else is kind of meh aside pet F2 being reliable.

I must say I cannot see eye-to-eye with anyone being optimistic about this grandmaster trait. After shortbow getting nerfed so that longbow looks better and Allie acknowledging that we have utilities not being worth the slot without traiting them we get another trait that doesn’t add anything interesting to Longbow at all. It just makes up for lack of umpf. Are there any other classes in game with 5 traits aimed at making one of their weapons viable??? Not OP, viable.

And needing piercing arrows to make up for a lack of skill? Come on man, will positioning help you deal with minion master necros or spirit rangers? Realy? Longbow is a damage weapon which was designed to deal max damage at long range. It was bad at that in pvp, and now they add a grandmaster trait to compensate? I wonder if they will revert the autoattack projectile speed buffs as well so you take this trait? This is just bullcat.

And arguable Remorseless since its only useful if you’re using the stealth on Longbow.

After an entire year of waiting, an entire year of having to trait 30pts just to get signets to work, 30 pts just to get decent condition removal, or 30pts just to get traps to work… what do we get?
We need to trait 50pts for longbow and that doesn’t even cover all 5 Longbow traits.

On a more serious note I remember this video having a huge impression on me when I saw it. I bought the game on day -3 but didn’t really play it until early 2013. Coming from a cheap free to play wow clone where my dps as a mage consisted of giving the tank a few seconds to get aggro, applying all buffs and hitting the 3 key as many times as I was able to in my 10 seconds window this video was like the intro suggests a hit in the face. My first exotic gear was carrion and it was really bad, probably my skills though. And then I look at this and not 2 minutes pass and I know more about combos, evades and blocks than I learnt on my own. Utility just wasn’t part of skills on the game I played. Still a solid video, a bit disillusioned now on how true the comments still are in the video after more than a year. Enjoy!

I saw the post in the morning (in EU) and was surprised that this was still on page 1 on the ranger forums. I wonder if this is a general GW2 population thing or a ranger one.

Anyhoo, it was interesting to hear on the zerker longbow tpvp experience. I think that zerker longbow is not far away from being a decent point cap build. I would also love to see some poison mastery thing, but at the same time – as someone in the CDI pointed out correctly – even though rangers have a lot of access to poison, a lot of those come from pets. So the poison trait (if it gets introduced) would either need to have no ICD so we could capitalize on our poison fields, or it should apply to pet poison as well. S/d, sb might just be more interesting with a twist to it. Whatever that poison trait would be, it would be hard to capitalize on it on LB.

I know we haven’t been as responsive as some of the other CDIs, but part of that is because we have double the amount of posts as the next one down and we’re spending most of our time reading and discussing the issues internally.

Given that, I’m going to lock the thread for now so that the team and I can catch up and discuss/summarize the feedback we’ve gotten.

Hi All,

I want to re-emphasize a few points i have made recently in regard to the CDI:

1: The primary purpose of the CDI is for the team to read your proposals, discussions and suggestions.
2: This allows us to then evaluate our end, discuss and then give our thoughts back to the group.
3: This particular topic is very big and thus there is a lot for us to discuss internally.
4: We will get back as often as we can with a summary of our thoughts. This said point 1 is still super valuable in of itself.
5: Finally the Devs are part of the CDI, fellow group members. Therefore we don’t want to pay lip service by commenting on posts that are not worthwhile to do so, in some beleaguered attempt at some kind of marketing exercise.
6: Thus please don’t expect a deluge of read posts especially on such a big thread.

Finally thank you for spending your time to contribute to the discussion and ultimately make GW2 the very best game it can be.

Its pretty nerve-racking being on the ranger part waiting for something which could be anything from reduced duration on jungle spider immobilize to melee pets reliably hitting targets, anything from another Barrage damage nerf to long range shot hitting dancing targets at 1000+ range for a change. And then there is that “something amazing” which we also were hinted at in one of the ready ups.

If you say that pets are dead weight in 95% of the game modes, and hurt you more than they help, you are just not playing the class right. Pets aren’t the best mechanic around, but they are far from being useless.

Try them in wvw

I used to wvw a lot on my ranger, recently not so much. I did a lot of roaming, flipping camps, slapping yaks. In a zerg fight pets die to easily, I agree witht that. But 95% of the game modes is just bullkitten.

Yeah. Flipping camps and smack dollis are super fun… I want to fight real battles! I wars ranged units was the most valuable units.

In wars there was no wall of reflection or retailiation boon. Pets have nothing to do with our inability to play a ranged damage backline to zergs. Its reflection, retal, and of course the unstoppable hammer train. I do understand what you are trying to say though.

I think everyone in this forum and this game understands Rangers need an overhaul (absolutely broken class mechanic, see past 100 pages and threads on it in ranger forums)

The only problem is, Anet does NOT believe this class needs an overhaul lol.
Even if they do believe it does, they simply WON’T do it and CAN’T do it (priorities like LS and gemstore are bigger lol)

I don’t think ranger needs an overhaul. An overhaul would mean redesigning the pets completely, redesigning the traits, utilities. The pets don’t need an overhaul to be scary so that people start dealing with them, instead of just circlestrafing. If you have reliable control pets, you can force peoples defensive skills being played on your terms. If they defend against the pet you control them, if they defend themselves from you you control them with the pet. Same for damage. We don’t need an overhaul for that. We need more control over the pet. We also need some traits removed and some new traits introduced, but I don’t consider that an overhaul.

There is zero reason for a player to worry about our pets now. If you’re proposing giving pets MORE power without an overhaul (based on Anet’s track record) they would siphon that power from the player to the pet which means we’d get weaker, as pets can’t hit anything now, especially if they’re dead. The class F2 ability, a core mechanic is just now being addressed so forgive me and others here if we don’t want to rely on an NPC to do damage for us.

Whether you want it or now, some of your damage will come from the pet. A spider with 30 points into BM can crit squishy targets for 2700 from range, while you deal damage too. If you would expand the melee attack range of pets by 100 it is possible that they would hit much more often. That is not an overhaul.

I don’t want to give pets more power, because they don’t hit reliably enough. What I’m saying, with a few small changes pets can become scary.

As Allie didn’t want this CDI to be all about the permastow option (or turning it into an aspect), I’d just like to come up with a poll:

The point of this is to lessen speculative statements for future discussions.

The poll serves to:

  • Provide a way to express your opinion without needlessly cluttering the thread
  • Provide a data to back up people’s expressed arguments (vs counting on the total number of participating unique users who have expressed their opinions on this matter and manually tally it up)

If you frequented the ranger forums for the last year or so, you had the opportunity to express your opinion, lot of peolpe did. Your data will be meaningless because there are people who play ranger who accept what Allie said, and won’t contribute to your poll, as there is no point to vote on it.

I don’t believe that’s what Allie is denying us. That is clearly a game bug and a pet that is stowed should remained stowed until summoned. This is needed to avoid very pet-unfriendly mechanics like Jade Maw.

What Allie is refusing is a Ranger being allowed to stow their pet in exchange for a flat damage increase so the Ranger would never unstow the pet.

Allie is not refusing or denying us anything. She is only the messenger.

He gets it. The ranger isn’t tied to his pet. If they remove the pet, they will just destroy the beastmaster aspect, not more.

Condition removal…. the ranger IS tied to its pet.

I’d like to remind everyone who thinks that the Devs don’t listen to the ranger community that the devs did merge spirit traits as asked, they reduced the aftercast on longbow as asked, they inceased the short range damage of longbow autoattack as asked, they added pull to Axe #4 as asked, they adjusted GS#4 second skill to be usable while moving as asked, they increased pet toughness/vitalitiy as asked. And a long while back they also reduced cooldowns on signets as asked (noone remembers 120 second cooldowns?). They don’t give us everything that we ask for, but don’t tell me that Devs don’t listen. That doesn’t make ranger in its current state allright by a long shot, but lets be clear on this.

And for those that think ranger doesn’t need a band-aid solutions, it needs an overhaul, pls look at what 1 buffed skill and 2 changed traits did to warriors.

you can’t compare what buffing a skill/trait does to a warrior… there class mechanic is perfectly fine and viable….

as of right now, rangers don’t have a class mechanic at ALL. this requires an overhaul….not some band aid fixes… its been band aid fixes for nearly 2 years dude and its still the most broken class in the game… if that doesn’t scream “I NEED AN OVERHAUL” I don’t know what does.

Yes I can totally compare the warrior buffs to our pet mechanic. If pets would reliably hit moving targets all the time like some people suggested, do you have any idea what beastmaster builds would do to people? Imagine jaguar hitting all the time, having amazing survivabilit in small scale battles. That is 1 flipping change. 1 change can make stuff a lot more useful. Stealth on hunter’s shot says hi…

ArenaNet has already admitted that an overhaul of the pet is required. They’ve also stated that they don’t have the time to do it.

So now we are stuck in a situation where the class mechanic needs an overhaul but won’t get one. That’s like having a car that needs gas but having no gas money. Putting band-aids on the gas tank isn’t going to help the situation.

While I do appreciate your update on the state of the CDI thread, I didn’t mention class mechanic at all. And I am one of the people who thinks that ranger doesn’t need an overhaul. An overhaul will result in bug fixes that destroy more builds than come to life due to the overhaul. Some people have the misconception that Longbow autoattack needs more damage, or that permastow would solve anything. This is not aimed at you mtpelion, just sayin’ that rangers need to sort out their heads as well…

Goal of Proposal
Steady focus (and opening strike) is currently designed around getting high damage at the start of a fight. We do know now that Ranger is not meant to have burst. By changeing the trait so that it gives 10% damage increase when endurance is not full, ranger could use this damage buff in prolonged fights, instead of losing it on the first gapcloser used by the opponent. It would also be more controllable by the player.
