You can get PVT gear for karma from Temple events, and running AC for Ascalonian tears. You will also have access to rampager gear there. Maybe there are easier dungeons, but AC is what I’m used to.

If you’re new you should try out PVT gear with knight trinkets and rampager/berserker weapons (something like this). If you go 30 int marksmanship and wilderness survival you will end up with decent survivability and decent damage. At 30% crit chance you will do just fine with Fury. You can use spotter instead of eagle eye, or piercing arrows if you are zerging or capping camps. You can also get speed runes instead. If you have 400 in leatherworking you can craft them for around 13 gold. That will free up a slot in utility as you won’t need Signet of the wild anymore. You can also go with piercing arrows and eagle eye, and forget signet of the beastmaster. Instead of signet of the wild you can get signet of renewal, and instead of signet of stone you can get protect me, which is a stun break as well. You can basically run a build that has -25% stun time, 3 stun breaks, 2 on demand condi cleanses and 1.5 passive, and 20 seconds of stability on your elite. That is pretty useful for staying alive.

Are pve rangers really that bad?

If you can let go of the notion of the Ranger as a long distance nuker with a tank pet ( aka bow/bear suckiness ), the class does reasonably well in dungeons. Combining good dps and some useful support in one build is easier than for quite a few other classes.

I’ve been running AC on my berserker ranger with gs/lb lately, and started using brown bear. It doesn’t suck, condi cleanse works. I can have 3 party condi cleanses on my ranger, I think that is pretty sweet. Also noone ever commented on my bear, cause I don’t send it in and use longbow, except P1, where it is really useful that way (again, condi cleanse for melee classes). I get that there are sucky rangers, but some will stay away from brown bear for all this hate, and they shouldn’t really. It has its uses, just like most of the pets.

WvW power ranger

Just learn to take it on the chin when you run into a matchup that you cannot win. It happens to all builds. You can survive and defeat others even in full berserker gear in wvw, beacuse you have enough room. In LB and GS you have 2 weapons which have a lot of utility. Couple that with 2 canines or spiders and you can stay out of harms way a lot. The point is not to survive the damage you take, the point is to not take the damage, or take it at the right time. If you’re opponent has a long channel, you should channel too and go for an invulnerability. I made a set of Speed runes today and now I can run Portect me, Lighning reflexes and Signet of the renewal with Rampage as one and Healing spring. That is pretty much all the defense you can get as a squishy power ranger in wvw from utilities. You can roam with fill zerker ranger, take camps, and take players too. You can put out real pressure with high power, I’m talking about making 33% of a thief’s health disappear with 1 autoattack. Play it. It will be frustrating at first, but as you learn to play all builds you will know when to run, and when to stay and finish the fight. Its not like glass cannon thieves can kill everyone in wvw. They can be beaten too, and than they need to run for it.

Don’t worry about where to spend points, you can reset your trait points at the NPC where you can by the manuals to unlock Master and Grandmaster level traits. It doesn’t cost much even when you are lvl 80, less than 4 silvers, and at that level that is 1.5 heart events. When you finish a heart event you get a mail, which has money in it as well. Don’t forget to get those coins.

For leveling I would recommend sword/pistol, and shortbow for your second weaponset when you unlock weaponswap. It makes leveleing easy. It sure helps if you practice with dagger/dagger, and dagger/pistol, but dagger only hits 1 enemy in front of you, while sword can hit more than just one, as it cleaves. I think it can hit up to 3 enemies. Shortbow is also pretty good for attacking multiple enemies. As being tanky is not a thieves strong point, I suggest getting all gear that has power, or power/precision on it. Maybe a few power/vitlity can’t hurt while leveling. Just get used to circling around mobs and dodging/evading thier attacks. The reason sword pistol is so strong while leveling is that you can drop an aoe field that keeps blinding your opponents, so they will miss. Most NPCs attack slow enough to take advantage of this.

Double bow works great at the moment, yea it’s still subpar for the risk and more fury would be nice but at least it’s fun to play

How do you make that work? I occasionally run into dat warrior dude, who can just run in your face come rain or snow. They usually run hammer/gs, and there is no keeping them out. I can’t imagine trying to stay alive with a shortbow instead of a greatsword.

When i run double bow i put sigs of hydromancy on both of them, gotta use your evade, knock back, cripple and stealth very wisely to keep yourself just out of range of the enemy (or very far out of range of the enemy, your call), I also found that having LR and MT makes that SIGNIFICANTLY easier to do (i will use LR to open up the distance if i know they don’t have a lot of CC).

I dunno, I run hidden pistol and LR, MT doesn’t feel that good for me. Warriors have too many leaps on weaponskills. They are a nightmare to fight, especially if they have stability. I just don’t feel a 2-3 second immobilize will help me out there much. By the time my dogs can get their F2 off, a warrior is out of range for them, and in melee range for me. It is really annoying. But even so, I’m loving LB/GS right now.

When/how do i get a bow?

I’m not sure what experience you may have had previously, but I come from an MMO where you could play a mage standing still, let someone take aggro and just hit 3 to deal max damage. In GW2 you need to be on the move, you need to learn the “tells” of the opponent. When you are levelling instead of just getting a bear and firing away from safe distance and hiting every skill on cooldown, look for ways to keep mobs away, or ways to avoid being hit once they get close. A lot of people pick ranger for the ranged damage aspect, and than frustration ensues once they hit 80 and go into wvw. I suggest trying out wvw sooner, rather than later, so you know what to expect, and what to train towards. Cause pve content with bear and a bow is pretty trivial, but players will not attack your bear.

Speaking of melee… I don’t recommend GS, it’s bad for anything other than zerg surfing. Maul is good damage, but easily avoidable. LB/GS is too defensive, and I think Sword/Dagger on swap is going to do a lot more for you. Not only does sword do way more sustained damage, but you get permanent poison uptime with that set and three built in evades.

I’ve made the experience that a lot of players want to get into melee ranger reaaaaly bad. By that time most are not prepared to dodge your hilt bash maul combo, cause they are focusing on getting their damage in. Unless I come across warriors who have stability on stun/daze, I can hit most of those players.

How Do i play PvP & WvW With Ranger?

Ranger can have really nice defense which comes from protection and/or dodging/evading. However, in case of rangers, unless you go for the condi regen bunker route investing in defensive abilities will drastically reduce your damage output. Especially against better players who know how to avoid your pet hitting them.

As for their role, rangers are great for clearing camps and yakslappin’ if you know what you’re doing. They can be great 1v1, outnumbered only if they run bunker builds (my experience anyway).

Beating bunkers sword/dagger will be your best friend, evades and poison will be very useful for fighting melee classes.

Thief and mesmer…. practice, practice, practice. Go to the mists and do hotjoins for pvp, or get into the Obsidian sanctum for some duels in wvw. Thieves and mesmers can make life for a ranger really hard untill you learn to fight them.

Weapons – Conditions axe/torch + sword/dagger, Power builds GS, longbow, sword/warhorn or sword/torch work.

3k auto attack is very much possible on non-bunkers. I recently started playing longbow/gs ranger, and it is a looot of fun when you start not dying to the sneeze of warriors. Forget invulnerability and get aggressive on your defense. Krytian drakehound and Wolf, Lightning reflex, and take hidden pistol if you’re a Charr. I did try traited signet of stone and protect me, and 2 evades are just way better than 12 sec invulnerability imo.

@Gorwald, you do realize trapper builds are one of our best builds atm right? It’s an insanely strong home point defender, and can bring quite a bit to a team fight in terms of AoE pressure and area denial as well.

As someone else said all you need to make ranger strong in wading through zergs is to pair them with a guardian and/or warrior who can give them some stability or be a signet ranger and also use enlargement.

My Necro Wells build > largely any traper build of rangers.

Did traps give protection to people inside? Wells do
Did traps heal the ranger on each tick? Wells do
Did traps can crit? Wells do
Did traps can remove conditions of friends teammates? Wells do
Did traps can remove buffs of ennemies? Wells do
Did traps can blind? Wells do
Did traps can be effective while spreading points in trees? No traps need 30 points in preci/%crit damage to be effective (lol), wells are effective and you can spread points in differents lines to have passive bonus to them

Sorry to dissapoint you…but wells > traps

And saying that to be effective you have to pair with a warrior or a guardian…lol

Warrior btw give stability with elite banner, i really doubt any warrior whould break an instant rez just to give stability to a ranger….or it’s a really dumb warrior

And to have stability as a ranger you choice Rampage as one or a signet who need 30 point in a trait line to affect you…lol

So what you’re saying, is because you can provide better support with wells and they have better effects (they kittening better when they’ve got double the CD) that well necro is better at home point defense than a trap ranger? Riiiiiiiiiiiiiiight.

You know how you counter a well necro? You get out of their wells, wait 12s then you go back and kick their teeth in because they can’t do jack kittening kitten now because all their kitten is on CD, for a trap ranger if you try that he’s gonna just throw his traps back onto you and knock you down in them so you get nice and dotted up.

PS: incase you didn’t realize trap builds are hybrid damage, that’s why they’re so effective at killing people.

Trap builds are hybrid damage? You mean you are running traps with Carrion gear? When I used to run around in Carrion (mind you I didn’t play ranger as good as I do now) it felt rather squishy. Even if you have 23k hp, low toughness is just meh… Can you link a build of hybrid damage trapper? I reeeeeaaaaally hope it has pvt/rabid/zerker/knight gear… cause that is what I have.

Been a long time since I’ve played my ranger, thinking of coming back to it and even making a second one for a different ranger build. From what I’ve seen so far there seems to be the following choices for specs in wvw.

Spirit Roaming condition/regen.
Shout based bunker.
Trap Conditions
Zerk longbow Glass.

What are the currently community opinions of these specs and what would be the optimal traits/gear setup for each of these?

Trap ranger I go full rabid. Like CRabbit put it, probably the quickest camp clear build, maybe spamming Pistolwhip is quicker a bit. Get some stunbreak though, this build can die quick if you don’t know what you’re doing. Get river drake and RoA against other players or Entangle for camps.

Glass longbow build. Have been playing this most recently, I use knight earrings and rings. Shared anguish is a must for me, I go 30/30/10/0/0. As I have a Charr I run Hidden pistol, Lightning reflexes, Hunter signet, RoA with LB/GS. It is a lot of fun if you know when to turn away from a fight.

I totally agree with the OP, however to be frank warriors weren’t allways in such a sweet spot. As a comparison rangers sucked for a loooooong time. Thieves are beginning to feal how it is just now what it means to get nerfed.

If you have the money then it may be a good idea to invest in a separate set of armor for underwater combat, due to how strong ranger condi builds are underwater.

I appreciate your enthusiasm, but I just don’t think this is a good idea. If a fight is not going your way and you enter water, you won’t be able to swap armor anyway.

I would consider burst dealing high amount of damage in a short amount of time. I don’t think you need fury on crit on longbow to do that. It would be nice, but I don’t think its what ranger needs. I also don’t think rangers will have proper burst ever. Its a class that was designed for dealing sustained damage (some would argue that there was no real vision behind its design at all, mind you). The question “Was lonbow fury really too much?” misses the point of what is wrong with longbow I think. Other professions have so many ways of getting into melee range, and lonbow can do only so much to keep them out. If the intention with longbow is for the ranger to stay at 1000+ range, than it needs more ways of doing that.

Mesmer Runes+Moment of Clarity

Does anyone know if superior runes of the mesmer’s sixth bonus correctly affects Hilt Bash and Concussion Shot? Trying to work out a build using the six rune bonus plus Moment of Clarity to see how long a daze I can get. Couple this with ice sigil(s) on a bow and some frosty pets and it sounds like a good bit of CC.

Moment of clarity affects stuns, rune of the mesmer affects dazes.

It’s stupid to have permanent Fury uptime with the only investment being a single Master tier trait. That’d be poor design, no matter how you slice it.

I do think Eagle Eye could use a little fury or might love, though.

About this, I could only repeat my previous post…

Obviously the change was unintended and had to be dealt with. It did however give the Longbow some change in perspective. I merely wonder if others think that the fury upkeep was enough to make the weapon actually viable and not just the flavor of the week. I think we can all agree that the profession could use a buff (or two… and a whole lot of bug-fixes.)

If we could agree that fury was enough to get the Ranger’s direct damage up to where it should be, the real question would be how to implement it. So far I am only wondering and looking for other people’s perspective on the matter and trying to promote a constructive discussion.

As you can see, I am not trying to promote improvement to the Eagle Eye trait. All I meant to say is that Fury may, or may not be what the profession needs to get its’ direct damage to compete with other classes.

That said, Eagle Eye was not at all without investment. For it to work you were forced into using a longbow, distributing 20 trait points in Marksmanship and using the respective trait.
A few posts back I actually made a suggestion for the Remorseless trait, but that would still not bring direct damage up to par if we would agree that the Ranger needed more than just fury. This suggestion would only make the requirements for getting fury more troublesome because it would now require 30 trait points and a grand-master trait.

What ranger needs in order to compete with the direct damage of others is burst. Apart from maul rangers don’t have burst.

New Skills Inc

I don’t think ranger needs new skills, what it does need is better synergy between pets and traits, rearrangement/merger of taits, and maybe some new one related to our pets dying. Like 50% increased crit chance for 10-15s when our pet is dead with a 60s cooldown would be nice in the beastmaster line, would be a nice boost to cleric builds. Since our pet AI won’t get any better soon, and fiddling with pet stats got us a nerf anyway, we should get something out of our pets being unavailable due to design decisions. We could have 2 grandmaster traits with almost opposite effect. Master’s vengance (increased crit chance while pet is dead, 60s ICD), and Beastmaster’s prowess, your pet gains stats on kill that stacks to 25, it is removed when the ranger is downed. Natural healing and Quickening zephir become mastr traits. Then you can merge rending and intimidation training, and vigorous and stability training.

Lack of fury is not what is wrong with Longbow. And 3 sec of fury on crit with no internal cooldown would have been pretty powerful for a trait that makes longbow a 1500 range weapon and increases damage by 5% as well.

Scorpion Wire

The skill has been wonky since release, but recently I haven’t been able to get a decent pull out of Scorpion Wire to save my life. Four times out of five the projectile is “obstructed” by perfectly even terrain, and when it does manage to hit a target it merely acts as a knockdown instead of a pull, moving them by maybe an inch at most with no Stability or other abilities blocking it.

Can we get this skill re-examined in a future patch to make it more reliable?

Longbow rangers had the same issue with their weapon skills. I wouldn’t hold my breath on a fix in this anytime soon.

I wanted to experiment with venoms, but ended up trying out traps instead. Needle trap, tripwire and panic strike are really nice tools to kite people to death. But it still fealt squishy. I was using carrion, and the warrior npc certainly didn’t cause any problems in the mists. The thief on the other hand…

Are you saying you kill everyone with thief or are you saying thief is the only thing that kills your ranger?

Neither. What I’m saying is that comparing ranger and thief, both being glass cannon thief definetly has better defensive options in my oppinion. Some might think that thief has the weakest defense (the word defense in itself causes a lot of confusion here), and I strongly disagree. Thats all I’m sayin’.

When you say WORST defense in game, what do you think about? A full zerker thief with 10k HP, right? I played a full zerker Longbow ranger in wvw, and my defensive options compared to thief were apalling. Also being ranged never stopped good thieves from closing the gap and killing me rather quickly.

And since you put it like that, it is not about 1 thing. IR is not the only option of getting out of hard CC. It was a bloody good one I’ll give you that, I loved it as well. I ran away from soooo many zergs after I’ve been hit by static fields its rediculous. It just wasn’t right. For 5 inits (7 seconds of untraited init regen before dec 10 patch) it was very very cheap.

Of course your defensive options are worse considering you’re using a weapon with the best range in the game (if traited). This is honestly your fault for expecting to have great survivability using longbow when any enemy is close. You do have a weapon swap and S/X has amazing defense through their massive amounts of dodges, especially S/D. Even greatsword has an evade on auto-attack, a block, swoop which works well as a gap closer and a great way to flee and a decent daze/stun.

We’re the only class without some form of access to protection, we have limited access to regeneration and only one way to get stability (Dagger Storm a 90s cool-down elite). This is the reason we go with more berserk gear than anything. We can’t stay on people like other classes can with high access to stability, protection and regeneration, which means we’re still dodging around even if we’re in PVT gear which in turn makes our damage very bad.

On my ranger I can have 2 6 sec invulnerability skills, one of which is a stunbreak, another stunbreak that is an evade and gives vigor, +50% endurance regen for 5 trait points, 20 seconeds of stability from my elite, a block on greatsword, and evade on its autoattack. And if I had to choose between my s/p thief and my lb, gs ranger it would be the thief, not even a close call. Make a glass cannon ranger in wvw and try it out, you will see. But of course you could run it with s/d gs, that would be hilarious.

I think poorly handling it would have been staying quiet, and after its fixed come on the ranger forums and say something like: “Allright all you professions, everyone without Fury on their Longbow autoattack take one step back….. you too Ranger.”

Let’s do the math on thief stun breakers… SS – 50s cd, RfI – 60s cd, IS – 30s cd. Not counting Haste(or shadow trap with the cast time, l.o.l.).
So except for IS(which, if I needed to use when in trouble for the stunbreak part killed me as often as saved me) we have only 2 stunbreaks with (almost)1m cd each.

But hey, let’s nerf pretty much the only advantage sword sets have over dagger mainhand, because small cat logic.

Lol, lets do the math on ranger stunbreaks as well then, shall we? Lightning reflexes 40s, Signet of renewal 60s, Protect me 60s, Quickening Zephyr 60s.
Necros: Spectral walk 60s, Spectral armor 60s, Plague Signet 60s, Well of Power 50s.

Now lets add to that comparison base HP, access to Protection/Stability, Access to Blocks, viability of condition specs and so on and so on…

You can’t just look at stunbreakers in a bubble, you have to take into account the class’s strengths and weaknesses as well.

The strength of the thief class is not getting hit in the first place, not taking it like a champ. Bunker rangers do that, necros do that.

stop spreading misinformation nagymbear.
it is 5 initiative 3 for teleport and 2 for the return. there is no way to return without using infiltrators strike first.
As for “slotting stun breakers” what s/d thief doesn’t have shadow step/infiltrators signet set.. the only build that wouldn’t is s/d blind spam. (which uses stealth and shadow arts)

a thief using just ONE round of IR stun break is like a warrior using skills 2 3 4 and maybe even 5 on their first weapon set…..

would a warrior do that? use 3 or 4 skills sacrificed to move a few hundred range away and drop 1 condi? i think not.

5 initiative for IR is alot. 5. thats 5/12 initiative for ONE move 200-600 range away. thats almost half of our attacks. using it 2x = 12 seconds to recover.

First off, 1 initiative per second and 2 IRs are 10 seconds. And if a warrior uses all its weapon skills, you will totally not be on the same playing field 5 seconds later. Put that in perspective. Lets not play martyr here, nobody will be sad because thieves are cursed by this terrible plague called initiative system. And 200-600 range? Did they nerf range on IR? I thought it was up to 1200.

cant just look at one aspect. thief was given this bc of his lack of defense . he needs it. other classes dont.

Blocks, invuln, aegis, protection on one side, blinds, evades, teleports, stealth on the other. Pets?? Really? Try to hit any half decent player with a pet:) You are arguing against yourself. Pet range of 1500? Pets can’t even hit moving targets, what are you smoking?

How anyone in their right mind can justify being able to escape while being stunned for 2 initiative is beyond me. I understand it hurts, but this change was totally justifyable. They removed the stun break a while back, and now fixed shadow return to not activate while being stunned. Its not just thieves that have to deal with all the hard cc.

Frustrating Patch (December 10, 201)

Powerful or not natural vigor allowed rangers to dodge more, which in case of bunker build might have seemed too much, but its a big part of rangers’ defence. All rangers, including glass cannons have now less ways of actively defending themselves. Its not like we have access to blinds, teleports, evades like thieves. Even dodges they could get more out of. But at least we hade better damage than them, right? /rolls eyes Dodging active, bark skin buff passive. I wouldn’t mind if Anet didn’t specifically state over and over again that they are trying to promote active play.

Brainstorming Better Trapper

Imho the trait to be able to throw traps is really unnecessary. If you run into someone that is trying to kite you, you won’t be helped much by 600 range thrown traps. For melees you won’t need that either. Could be just me, but I totally can live without throwable traps. The only part where its useful is at sieges. But even though the triggered traps have a larger areay of effect, the trigger is still too small. And I think that on a full rabid trap build traps do actually beenfit from the trait line, as some pulse and can crit, and can apply bleeds that way. The reason I don’t go into marksmanship and nature magic is because I don’t have room for spirits, don’t need boon duration as I have limited access to boons, and I don’t need power, as it doesn’t affect a full rabid build that much. I tried to go into beasmastery, but wasn’t worth it really if you ask me. What I want as a trapper is my bleeds on maul back. I loved that. Swoop, maul, drop trap, swap for geomancy sigil, was pretty awesome.

What traps do need imo is stunbreaks.
