Why can't I PVP with my friends in the Battle Grounds?

in PvP

nysta.6713

I want to que up with friends and do a few battle Grounds. Why wont it let us? It really needs to be fixed. Yes i know SPVP but we are just wanting to relax and have fun. This needs to be fixed!

You can play with your friends via tournaments. We will continue as well to improve the ability to play with friends in pickup games, but it will always be somewhat limited because we do not want large groups of guilds pub stomping the pick up games.

and i’m loving that quality. it’s so much more fun. i find it even more fun when in one game you’re fighting with someone, and the next against. there’s a lot to like about this random system which really keeps you on your toes.

The role of Thieves, and the lack there-of.

in Thief

Posted by: nysta.6713

nysta.6713

i’d like to hesitantly point out that a thief is a thief, not an assassin. and it amazes me that people aren’t interested in anything except high dps stealth-backstab concepts with thieves in mmos.

i like the thief for gw2 for its thug mentality. it’s not a ninja. it’s a streetbrawling thug. which, technically, is closer to what a thief in a fantasy setting would be like. you get a little stealth to hint at possible trickery and speed because you’d be used to running away.

i kind of agree the steal mechanic could be more exciting, but given the amount of screams if thieves could steal random gear from your bags, it’s a creative middle-ground that anet came up with. one which is quite interesting and while i hear a lot of complaints about the random nature, i’d like to point out that if you’re picking someone’s wallet, you’re not sure what you’ll get either. could be moths. could be a jackpot. so, delving into someone else’s pouches might get you something good, or something useless.

still, i wouldn’t personally mind seeing a steal coin skill, even for a copper or two. just for the hell of it. sometimes those “hell of it” skills are the real flavour of an mmo. it shouldn’t all be about which “build” gives the best “dps” and leaving it at that. it should be about how you want to play the character for your own fun and amusement. i personally believe if you want to play a certain way, your way will always be viable to a degree.

that randomness is quite fun, too. reminds me of the best times you can have playing games like warhammer if you play orcs or skaven. you can have some seriously op abilities, but they’re so random they only work once in a blue moon. but when they do, oh the memories!

for me, the thief should be more support anyway. it should be using more tricks and being irritable. dps? that’s more the assassin concept. the whole “permanent stealth” thing is fun when you’re the one stealthed. but otherwise, it’s just bizarre. as someone said – why can’t ele’s just turn invisible, then? or rangers? they’d have good camo gear, surely. and soldiers? why not? they’re good with camo, too. about the only way stealth would work well in any mmo is if it was levelled in the same way morrowind or skyrim does. the more you use, the better you get. but that at the same time, there’s an opposing skill of spotting stealthed toons. and the more you use, the better you get. otherwise, i find it a bit too easy to play.

finally: scorpion wire. cool as. c’mover here!

Do you think events should increase in difficulty?

in Dynamic Events

nysta.6713

I actually would like ANet to look at fixing event zerging. The main issue is that I’ve gotten bronze on several events simply because there are SSSOOOOOO many people zerging the event that I can’t do enough damage fast enough for it to count.

Its so bad in some places (Queensdale Cave Troll) that I just pass on by if I see more than 10 people at an event. I’m pretty sure that is not the intended affect. Making the event “harder” is not the only solution. More events is what needs to happen. There are vast sections of land that have nothing but grinding mobs. Add more events.

Also, lets take the Kessex Hills bridge as an example. What is several centaur warlords were to show up if the player numbers were really large? What about another line of catapults hammering the players defending the bridge?

Anyway, I agree that most events in zones 1-25 will never get to the failed stages.

i haven’t done kessex hills bridge. mainly because there’s no room on it thanks to guild camping.

my necro doesn’t use minions. mostly i use axe-dagger, and in pve that’s been the majority of my time.

for tougher mobs (and multiples) and pvp, i tend to love the staff to start by slapping down a few marks before switching to axe-dagger to finish them off. axe-dagger’s fairly bursty and fun. and i admit to loving the sound of it as much as the graphics of it. it looks nice and painful.

i live a long time in pvp. necro’s pretty robust if you don’t spend too much time trying to run into people’s faces. i admit to being a bit of a cautious pvp’er in wvw, though. there i’ll happily sit on the wall and send marks down, or run behind the zerg and slap marks across the front line.

in spvp, i tend to be more outgoing, though, and still survive quite well on the staff/axe-dagger combo. it’s pretty tasty.

i find a lot of necros having problems have tried to max their lifesteal? lifesteal doesn’t feel to me to be as exciting as it sounds, so i kind of went for power. i admit to being something of a glass cannon, though, with my necro.

“So I go charge up front like a warrior is supposed to do.”

there’s your problem right there.

making assumptions based on other games. this one requires a good level of understanding the limits of your, and other, classes to be successful in pvp. it also requires being a little picky about where you fight.

relying solely on your hammer will no doubt see you dead pretty quick, too.

i’ve had warriors slap me down pretty quickly sometimes. usually they move around an awful lot and end up moving me where i don’t want to be moved. or thumping me into the dirt and making me eat their hammer.

gw2 has a whole new dynamic. can’t expect to be the best in one afternoon. practise makes perfect, remember?

actually, i’ve been surprised by the lack of any really irritating or silly bugs. i’m quite happy with this launch in comparison to many others. even the first week was awesome, without that grinding halt of graphics due to too many people being around like you get in most other games on launch.

this was great.

add to that the communication has been overwhelming in comparison. i’m loving the yellow notices which pop up. especially the ones which say “we’re tinkering with the server right now, you may experience some connection issues.” seriously, i love that. it means when i do get kicked and have to log back in, i’m not irritated, because i was expecting it. and then they tell you when they’re done! awesome, in my opinion.

how many other games would tell you they’re tinkering? how many would just take the game offline instead? and how many would pretend you weren’t even worth the time to tell when it was over? come on. for a game we’re not paying a sub for, that level of cool is hard to find.

i hope other games pay attention to this launch.

I believe you cannot farm materials endlessly… it will eventually yeild nothing the longer you farm. Farm a little, do something else, farm a little more. You can’t just roam around killing the same mobs over and over again… it knows you are doing that and adjusts drop rate accordingly. It’s an anti-farm code.

if that’s true, that’s the most awesome thing ever.

I have a really big problem with getting my level dumbed down

in Players Helping Players

Posted by: nysta.6713

nysta.6713

i think it’s perfect. part of the problem with playing with some friends is sometimes they (or you) level too fast. soon, you’re playing in different zones, and it’s a sacrifice and burden to go backward. and for the lower levels, i found it so irritating to watch level 80 chars “run” other characters through for xp.

the worst things were dungeons in other games. you’d get in, but there’d be no tank, but it won’t matter because “my friend’s gonna tank for us. he’s 80!” and people would say that like it’s an awesome thing, but in reality you end up doing the dungeon by doing nothing at all and getting real bored real fast. soon, it became the norm to have an 80 friend “run” you through dungeons. (edit: which is why i stopped doing dungeons in wow. too pointless.)

this way is better. your friend can come back and help, without losing. they get xp, they get a challenge, and it’s all good.

it’s a no-lose situation for a GAME.

You miss the point of his problem

It’s not getting the carrot that matters, but the motivation the carrot inspires.
People need concrete goals to work towards, and aesthetics simply don’t cut it for most people who have had time to get what they want after 80.

So to answer your question OP, currently there is no Significant point to keep playing the game. It’s disappointing, and hopefully something will be injected into the game so players have a reason to log on.

i have a concrete reason for playing.

i’m really enjoying the fun of it. in terms of not having the pressure of a bunch of angry players on my team demanding to know why everyone is noobs because they’re not winning enough to get their pvp carrots fast enough to somehow prove they’re the best at something which is, essentially, a team thing.

while team sports are exciting to play, and watch, they take the fun out of it pretty quickly. watch a losing team lose its players and coaches every year. there’s too much rage and anger as everyone wants the carrot. it’s not positive. it attracts only the worst element of the pvp culture, drawing in the loud obnoxious screamers.

mind you, i do find they’re rather quiet in this game. must be the lack of pvp reward armour which granted them the ability to steamroll.

i love this game. i love it for the way it offers you the chance to seriously enjoy playing the game, rather than to play the game seriously. even pvp. anyone can join. everyone can have fun with it. and no one’s hanging out in the spawn point just collecting pvp points by being there afk. because THAT’s the kind of thing carrots inspire. afk’ers, leeches, screamers and noob-calling rage quitters.

you want a ladder? make your own. arrange your own tournaments. i hear that’s coming. but leave the rest of us out of it. some of us really do like fun. some of us think fun IS the carrot. we took the red pill.

the system is a lot better then losing from a ‘Skilled’ player that only needs to press 1 to win because he spent more time PVE’ing is PvP gear together.

and, because of this, i haven’t really seen anyone standing around in a corner doing nothing so they can get their points for showing up without having to actually do anything. everyone’s actually fighting rather than going afk to get their pvp gear the easy way.

i think in wow, that pvp gear no longer means you’re a great pvp’er. it means you were simply there a long time. doesn’t even mean you can use your class. at least here with gw2, you actually have to have been fighting. standing around doing nothing’s not going to get you much.

and, as has been mentioned, once you got your gear you stil didn’t need to know your class. just had to find the nearest guy without his pvp gear and hit him once.

And you’re saying that a game like WoW or SW:ToR didn’t have freedom when “choosing” what you want to be? I’d called that freedom.

If you want to make a dungeon group in WoW with 5 rogues, you can’t. Two warlocks, a priest, a hunter, and a rogue? Nope, can’t do that either. Warrior, DK, hunter, Mage, warlock? Sorry, not allowed.

In order to complete content in “holy trinity” games, you NEED tanks and you NEED healers. In a game like GW2, you need 5 skilled players. Any profession, any skills. As long as all 5 people know what the hell they’re doing, you’re golden.

I’m reading everything you’re saying, and I can see your side of the story. But really, REALLY, you shouldn’t be playing GW2. It doesn’t have what you want. You can rail and complain and mope about it, but they’re not changing their entire design philosophy to embrace a point of view they’re actively avoiding.

Sorry.

Well yea, that’s why you normally have 1 tank, 1 healer and the rest DPS. What is the problem with that? Why reinvent the wheel?

The reason I grouped up was to work as a team and clear the content. Why would I spend all that time searching for people only to forget about them during a fight, or say not “rely” on someone?

In my opinion this just trivializes a very important aspect of RPG’s and thats the “Role” aspect.

This is a response to the people saying that groups are every-man for himself.

there’s the thing, though. “work as a team”.

it doesn’t have to mean the holy trinity in every mmo. it means, simply, being more cohesive with your skills. work together. when you’re taking too much damage, you should be rolling out and letting someone else take their turn. everyone should be working to control the enemy as much as killing it.

you might like to see using your ranged gun as not being a sign of not being a wow-style warrior, but more about supporting your team by being able to dodge out and still keep contributing. your gun, too, can knockback and cripple your mob. brilliant stuff. it also pumps enough dmg to not be considered a waste of time.

you say you don’t want to forget your team. that’s great! but isn’t being a tank in wow, pretty much forgetting your team? you jump in, thwack the badguy and hope the healer’s paying attention. rinse. repeat.

this way there’s all sorts of things to keep up on. are you dying? roll out. oh, look, someone’s down. how about healing them while your own heals cooldown and others take the punishment while you get your breath? then you can jump back in fresh and big and nasty? that guy you healed won’t be saying, “wow what a tank!” he’ll be thinking you’re a nice guy as well as a great player. and that’s how teams are made.

a guy tried healing me in a fight the other day. he was at full health when he started. was on maybe 1/5 when he finished because he got hit on by adds. i managed to peel the adds off him and he healed and finished smashing them with me before we dumped back on the boss. for me, that was an awesome moment, because he could have just ignored me. could have just kept doing his “role” of dps. but he didn’t. he tried to do what was best for the team.

if you really want a role, i think the best thing to do here is make your own role. just make it a good one.

But that’s what an MMORPG is all about choosing a “role” and doing it. Why make something harder than it needs to be. What’s wrong with the holy trinity system, please enlighten me.

It’s possible to make fights hard using the holy trinity system, just look at almost every other MMO and how they do it.

Honestly though man, I didn’t have fun in the dungeon. I know that fun is subjective and that other people might have had fun. I don’t see the fun in being a Warrior who is normally the tank because he can wear heavy armor, dying repeatedly only to get picked up to go back down again.

The system is frustrating, how am I supposed to survive a fight, really tell me. If this is how high-end instances are played I really might not like this game.

that’s the thing, though. everyone still has the mentality of a warrior being a “tank”. but look at the damage you can do with the warrior in gw2. he’s hardly a tank. that greatsword damage. man, it makes my eyes pop each time i see it chop out health points from enemies.

the key is working together. i don’t know if you have anyone you play regular with, but my wife and i are always fighting together. we’re working on getting our combo fields going and try to synch everything. when it comes off, it’s awesome. the difference to this game is that even though you’re playing 3 roles, you still have to work together to control the mob. it’s a jigsaw.

i agree, it’s very different. but that’s the point, really. those old roles of t/d/h are too cliche now. too tired and worn. this way is more dynamic. more fluid. it’s hairier, for sure. the fights can be close. but isn’t that fun? to succeed when the odds look stacked against you? knowing you won because of how well you worked together, rather than just because you had one good player who was the healer?

i really think wow made everyone lazy. it was too easy to succeed in wow in every aspect of the game. all you needed was one good player and no one else had to try. you could spam one or two buttons while standing still. you seldom had to think.

for me, if you spend a few minutes really looking at your skills and really testing your weapons/spells, you might find there’s some real surprises there for you. especially with combo fields and the like. and really getting the hang of moving, too.

i love the lack of healer and having to depend on myself for it. the downed state for warriors is awesome because of the self-rally. that’s just amazingly good. it’s kept my warrior alive through many scrapes i would have died in with another class.

i think the big problem with some players dying “too fast” is getting stuck in the mentality of most other mmos which require less awareness of your positioning. you need to move around a lot more, and when dodging, ensuring you’re moving (say) backwards toward an area you’ve already cleared.

as i said, i still see rangers and elementalists in particular, standing still while shooting and casting. i love seeing that in pvp, because it’s an easy kill. but i can see those people struggling in pve during the hard fights.

with warrior, i’m pretty bad at melee classes when they get confusing. so, how i manage with warrior is i use the gun to open the fight and slap it down with the two-hand sword or hammer to finish. the hammer’s brilliant against harder fights (i use it a lot in my personal quests) because it has a lot of stuns and knockbacks/knockdowns (comparative).

if i have to, i try for some range with a knockdown and double-dodge before switching to gun and doing a lot of running while my heal finishes its cooldown.

i feel most mmos have made us lazy over the years. we’re not used to seriously being multi-faceted in our fights. gw2 forces you to consider what you’re doing and, essentially, playing the role of tank/heal/dps with one class. all the time. i really believe if the classes were rebuilt to a more formal “role” oriented style, we’d all have been so bored by now. because this kind of fighting means you’re always on edge.

and that, my friend, is both the challenge and the fun.

PVP and Endgame Question or rather a effect this had on me

in Players Helping Players

Posted by: nysta.6713

nysta.6713

Personnally, I don’t think that balance in PvP should be achieved by giving everything to everyone without even trying. It’s the old hardcore vs. casual player debate. Why on earth does my weapons and armor have the same stats as someone who just bought the game if I already spent like 100 hours doing PvP? People who invest alot of time should get more rewarded that someone who just started. It seems pretty logic to me.

The PvE aspect does not share this path. If a player just turned 80, he won’t be able to finish the high end instances like someone who already spent 100 hours getting his gear together to actually be able to beat those instances right? How is PvP any different based on this logic ?

I’m trying to be constructive here because, like the OP, I don’t understand their vision of PvP. To me, it feels like they said: “So how do we balance PvP guys ? Why not just give people the same gear and stats. That way, we won’t have to balance anything”. It’s a shortcut for a quick getaway.

I bought this game to do some serious PvP and the only thing I can do about it is change the appearance of my armor and I don’t even have to level my toon up to the level cap to do it…kind of disappointing. In a mmo, it’s all about the gear. Once you’ve explored the world and saw all the beautiful scenery (the gfx of this game are awesome), all that is left for you to do is get better gear to see bigger numbers. It’s always about getting THAT piece of gear and they completely took it away in PvP.

I respectfully disagree. In PvP, it’s all about being better than the enemy. When I go up against anyone with the same gear and superior tactics I will win. If he has better skill he will win. It basically makes PvP purely about who has better skills in comparison to most played hours.

Besides it’s not like most played hours doesn’t matter. If I played 100 hours and I have to fight against someone who just started I will win. That’s the progression. Skill progression.

amen to that.

i think kicking off on equal footing is awesome. finally it’s all about skill, not gear. you can’t get steamrolled by a bunch of geared players. if you lose, you’ve lost because you still need to learn to play your own class.

i find it sad so many people got used to the concept of farming for gear so they could think that extra advantage gear gave them was a badge of skill. it’s that kind of attitude which infected wvwvw and led to the whole dolyak thing. has anyone else noticed since anet took the xp gain off the dolyak escorts that you can just pop straight into wvwvw without a 2hr-long queue now and there’s so much more action going on? it’s wonderful that anet seems to actively look for ways to make the whole pvp experience exciting, dynamic, and challenging to everyone.

this game is viagra to my pvp-on.

enjoy your fight. i had a guy start a “you’re all noobs” whinge in the game the other day. but after a few cycles and being reminded it’s just a game, began to enjoy it even when he was losing. i always say you should accept that sometimes you’re going to lose not because your team is bad, but the other team is good.

it doesn’t hurt to accept that, too. how about “wow, those guys are good” rather than “wow, you guys are noobs”? i think that will always give you something to aim for.

for a team to work together, you have to work with your team, too. you can’t just get angry when they don’t do the work for you.

on a more helpful note, running and dodging.

always move.

i’m still having to tell myself that as a caster.

“move move move move!” is my mantra.

and all things considered, the balance in this game is awesome. i’m particularly loving the cc not being as intrusive as with other games while still being an important component of attack.

i can honestly say i don’t sit there thinking warriors are op. any class is op if the player using it knows what they’re doing.

End Game at 80?

I usually avoid forums because I am somewhat of a book writer and not many people want to read a lot lol… but I wanted to say something about this. :P

The entire game feels like end game to my friends and I. What ruins the game for a lot of people, in my opinion, is rushing to 80 and then having nothing to do. We started playing around Sep 2nd, and we have been in the norn area since starting. We decided to do all of our home cities, one by one, in order to learn, and see what there is to know about the fascinating worlds we come from.

I can honestly admit I have not had this much fun in a video game since I was a kid, and truly feel this is the game I have been waiting for. I feel the need to take it insanely slow, and I imagine I will still be in the starting areas when I hit 40 lol. I want to see all the events, meet the npcs, and drink ale with friends every night while laughing and talking about the events of the day.

I guess what I am trying to explain is that… if you order this high quality, amazing meal from a great chef, and then you walk into the kitchen 10 minutes later and you want to see the finished product, you aren’t going to be happy with it yet. Enjoy the anticipation of what is to come, savor it, let your imagination go wild with all the flavors and how wonderful of an experience it will be. Don’t let the fact that you can’t have the cake and eat it too stop you from the experience of enjoying it. It’s meant to be savored and taken slow.

I actually think end game could be something else besides grinding like everything else. I would enjoy making up an endgame where I wander the world and help people I see that are in trouble, and I am happy when I get a “thank you” and that is a nice quest reward for me. ^^ It makes things unpredictable, and you never know when you will be in the chilly icelands and see a fellow flower being beat up by a bunch of trolls. Rush in to save them and almost die yourself!! \>o</ Nyaah!!! If they say thanks then it makes me smile.
(To the flower I saved, whoever you were, thank you for the quest. My reward was an unidentified dye and your thanks. <3)

Slow down and look around at the world. It’s beautiful! I started a photo album, and have been having so much fun. I can’t wait to see what they have in store for this game, and I will patiently wait to see it, while I slowly crawl through this content with my friends.

Anyway that’s my opinion. Just have fun getting to 80. There is no carrot on a stick. There are carrots everywhere. O_O Muahahaha!

Have fun, my fellow GuildWarriors. -/

beautifully put.

i know i’m turning into a fat bunny in this game.

some of the little moments in this game are pure class. i started a charr the other day and ended up doing a “ghostbuster” quest. i’m sure one of my answers to the quest-giver was actually “i ain’t afraid of no ghost.” brilliant. the little things in this game are what makes it awesome.

i think if you slow down and enjoy the map, you can see why anet said the whole game was endgame. because you’ve got your dailies for your grind, you’ve got your spvp with your pvp gear already set, you’ve got your dungeons to crawl for loot rather than levelling. you’ve got so much to do! there’s not enough hours in the day for this game. and what gets me even more is that with the trading post down, we haven’t even got to the economics of it yet!

that’s a new endgame right there!

how everyone got to 80 so quick worries me. i haven’t managed to get a toon out of its 20s. i keep wanting to reroll because i saw someone doing something that looks cool. or i just want to see more of the other races. i can’t decide! it’s like being in a candy shop.

i never move on from a map until i’ve finished it all. and even then, i think i’ve done some of those dynamic events a few more times just because they’re fun.

best mmo so far. how it managed to put the fun back into “grinding” is boggling my mind. i can’t get enough of it. everything is just so right.

i’ve played both ele and necro in combat, as well as warrior. have to say i don’t feel underpowered as an ele or necro. in fact, the ele was awesome in wvw. all that aoe…

i think it relies on being positional. trying not to be “in the guardian’s face”. keep with the group and keep back a little. gw2 more than any other game demands you spend a lot of your concentration on knowing where you are as much as where you’re throwing your spells. i’ve also found a LOT of casters haven’t yet realised they can cast while running…

i have a kind of issue with the font. i can’t read it. oddly, all other boxes in the game are fine, but the font in the trading post is kind of squeezed as though it’s under-sized. not sure if it’s because i’m using a 1600×900 resolution because my wife’s 4×3 monitor shows the trading post just fine.

otherwise, all good for the most part.

(presuming not tournament) it always seems fairly busy. i find it wonderful that the teams get rebalanced and sometimes you can be playing against someone you were just on a team with. it makes for some wonderful grudgeless battles.

can i take this space to say i had a game the other day where i ended up trying to cap a point on which a mage was being stubborn enough to try keeping. i was playing necro. we spent 5 minutes circling each other, throwing everything we had at each other. probably the best 5 minutes of gw2 so far, in my opinion, because we seemed so evenly matched.

in the end, one of my teammates showed up and the mage died. but i felt so bad about that because i never got to find out who’d ultimately have won that one (though i felt he would).

what got me was, straight afterward, he whispered me to laugh about it. and i have to say it shocked me that we can whisper to the enemy. that’s an amazing concept for me, coming from other mmos where you don’t really do much except spit vitriol in code.

and i’ve had a few encounters like that since, where you work with a team, then you’re fighting against them the next game and you can have a few chuckles at each other’s expense. i think this is a wonderful and comfortable spvp experience and i’m hoping it continues without too much “you’re all noobs on my team because you’re not winning for me” talk.

lovely. colour me very enthused and interested. also, i find the mists is always very populated, but whether they’re queueing or not…?
my server is the henge of somethingsomething.

holding “alt” key while dragging stacks lets you split them.

didn’t know that until yesterday.
