Keep fighting the good fight people. The community hasn’t decided yet that the WvW Dev team earned respect. The Dev team did not communicate [or show] their mastery of WvW gameplay. The Dev team did not communicate understanding of WvW player needs. The Dev team did not communicate understanding of player created feedback.

Do you want to challenge these claims?

You will not get charity, good feelings, or respect until that is corrected.

Devon Carver, Arenanet staff, who has posted numerous responses in the WvW forums.

I agree with Skylight that many of the responses to him have been childish and disrespectful.

kittening, moaning, complaining and whining… the normal nonsense of any discussion. That’s one thing. But personal insults are quite another. A lot of the comments I’ve read would result in bans if I was moderating these forums. They’re also counter productive. There’s a lot of dev teams that never post on their own forums because of nonsense like this.

Frustration is no excuse.

I disagree with you. Frustration is a legit excuse. I don’t care what you would do. Bow down and show respect for your authority figure. I will stand here and continue protesting.

And what are you protesting? The hundreds and hundreds of hours you’ve gotten out of a game you’ve paid 60 bucks for? When most single player games can’t even come close to that? Or the fact that you’re not paying monthly and can take a break/walk away at any minute? Or maybe another MMO where you have to wait an entire year before any content is released at all in the form of an expansion AND you’re paying monthly for it? The entitled garbage on these forums is becoming an epidemic.

You again? You want more phun time? “And what are you protesting?” Do I need to help you with that? You are a terrible communicator by the way. Everyone on the forums are “entitled!” Its an epidemic!

@Devon Jumping puzle doesn’t count as wvw anymore. Its not even in EB. It literally is the token pvp jumping puzzle. I expect some actual skill based wvw living world content. A good majority of wvw’ers dont even do the JP becuase it is boring, repetitive, and unrewarding

I thought I didn’t do it because it’s a jumping puzzle.

Pretty sad that the whole thread went to hell on the very first comments, hopefully one day we’ll see a much more mature WvW community. Guess that at least there’s some fun in the matchup threads (gif spams!).

Even if we are left out in the dark as some say and not seeing the updates that many want to get, there is no excuse to start attacking each other or the devs, that’s just being lame.

Still it’s not like everything has to be rainbows and bronies, but the hate that you can see on the WvW threads is just too much.

It’s not hate, it’s frustration. And here’s a bit of news for you … frustration comes from caring. From ANet’s position, loudly griping on the forums is NOT the worst thing that can happen (although I’m doubtful they realize it and you sure as hell don’t). The absolute worst thing that can happen is for players (customers) to simply give up and decide that nothing is ever going to change significantly enough to make a difference. For you, lordkrall, Vena, VOLKON, and others … I will tell you that kittening on the forums is actually a sign that there is still hope. When it goes away, one of two things has happened … either the key issues got addressed and the game got remarkably better, or most of the people who actually cared about the game left.

+1 for Cactus. Agree. Thank you for teasing out the emotions involved.

Well, some players have “big” feelings. That is fine. Emotional thinking is useful.

Isn’t it fascinating though? The community can rarely apply any pressure for change because it cannot keep the developers on the hook for its failures to provide the vision of gameplay it was selling. That is because the player base keeps rotating over. You have players like cocolu and many others who either don’t know the history of what was offered, and provided by the game; or cannot communicate it.

You have so many people that are unaware. This allows the developers to provide such limited change. You want/expect more change? How many people know? How many communicate it? The lack of a monthly subscription also destroys a communities ability to communicate traditional wants/needs. The GW2 forums serve as an example.

Communicate and share.

The main problem that we face in WvW or any other portion of the game/life in general is the sense of entitlement.

I play this, I own this. I want this. This is mine, not yours. It’s My Way.

It could also be a lack of patience.

I try to enjoy every aspect of Guild Wars. I don’t have alot of time to be spending playing a MMO. As an Active Service Member in the U.S. Military my time is limited, and what free time I do get is usually reserved for other things.

I enjoy Guild Wars 2 and Guild Wars 1, because they didn’t require that I have to play every day. Or Every hour or even every week to be good at them. There was no power-creep. There was a good story, and fun to be had with my Guild Mates.

However, I will be the first to say WvW is not without problems. I could make a long list of things I feel need to be fixed. This list would start with small issues like party bugs and not being able to right click to mail/whisper/invite from my guild/friends list. (giving me only a report option for my friends is silly) all the way up to game breaking bugs like Glitched towers and blatant use of hacks and cheat programs which have yet to be addressed.

However there is a extreme sense of entitlement in the WvW population. Just reading the forums the population comes off as elitist. Remarks such as PvE kittens and Sarcastic remarks about the Living World Content don’t do any favors to win over the rest of the Populations from sPvP or PvE.

If I was a new player reading the garbage that I see here I would be put off WvW in a second. Almost all of it is hate post and sarcasm, in addition to flat out attacks at the development team. I understand that the this is common amongst forums around various MMOs. Maybe it doesn’t help that GW allows for people to buy the game once and we are stuck with them forever, almost as bad as any free to play game which is out on the market.

However, I would like to point out that if you want any one to take seriously “we,” meaning all of us have in WvW. We all need to start start acting a little more like adults and a little less like spoiled children who didn’t get the shiny new toy we wanted this year for Christmas. Lay down on the floor and kick and scream, cry and yell. But when your done throwing your little tantrum the wold will still be the exact way it was before and nothing will have changed for the better.

Lets try to be mature, and lets try to have fun. We don’t need to be any bigger kittens then we already are.

Cheers.

Talyn, re-read what you wrote. You are insulting the audience you are addressing in a thread about respect…

I have a few things for you…are you familiar with generational differences? Generation gaps in culture? Your/our generation [we might be the same generation] like to use the “sense of entitlement,” argument to bash the young with. How is that working for you? LOL. It isn’t working. Its still there. It won’t go away. It will continue in MMO’s.

“The main problem that we face in WvW or any other portion of the game/life in general is the sense of entitlement.”
I strongly disagree with this. Look around on the forums Talyn. We have/had multiple generations of gamers in Guild Wars 2. The 1st generation gamers are phasing out…not around as much and naturally being replaced by those “entitled” younger gamers. How exactly are you going to change the culture for them?

WvW has larger issues than a “sense of entitlement.” It truly does.

I don’t think the issue is that gamers are angry, nor is the reason(s) they are angry pertinent.

the issue would be said angry gamers not being able to express their anger in a respectful manner.

I disagree, the reasons are pertinent.

The gamers should express their anger in a respectful manner. I agree. I see constructive criticism on the forum. I also see rage cages. I feel bad for anyone that has to try to put down an angry mob on a forum, but they’ve only brought it upon themselves. Whether it’s someone who only does PR or an actual dev posting, it really does not seem that they’ve grasped any of the real problems in WvW or given us a credible plan to make positive changes. “We’re changing the Quaggon’s” is like saying “We’re changing the flowers in your garden”, as the house is on fire.

I can’t get over how ridiculous anet has allowed a PvP format to become balance wise. Take Joe the Engineer for example…plays through some PvE with his engi, gets to 80, now he wants to play WvW. The kind of player that WvW is ostensibly designed for. First he realizes his class is terrible in WvW. Ok, so he makes a new one. Now he’s out fighting with his level 2 necro against players running around with far better gear, superior sigil stacks, food, and now guard stacks too. It is hilariously lopsided. How many hours of his life does Joe get to look forward to wasting before he’s on an even playing field?

I’m sorry, I know a lot of people from the MMO scene actually like grind, but it’s antithetical to GW PvP and players who got use to 5 minute re-rolls to play anything, any way they wanted, with all the tools at their immediate disposal to theorycraft and learn new things. Why we are still stuck in this awful grind mentality for WvW rather than moving to an sPvP type system, or at least a compromise amazes me. Ahead of all the other problems with WvW, this has got to be the #1 reason players drift away from it or make a decision that their time is more valuable than grinding to simply play the kitten game.

The above two paragraph rant is a direct response to anet’s goal of “making WvW more fun” and “not introducing more power creep”. Aside from fixing culling and making siege not character bound, practically everything you’ve done to the bloody game has made it less fun and introduced more power creep! So I’m not buying a let’s take it easy on the devs plea when they have been going in the wrong direction for a year now.

This is constructive criticism. Generally agree with statements here.

I like this quote a lot, “So I’m not buying a let’s take it easy on the devs plea when they have been going in the wrong direction for a year now.”

The developer “members” changed, but they inherited the game. They inherited its strengths and weaknesses. They inherited its failures and successes.

SpehssMehreen.5897 are you trying to protect SkylightMoon? Do not suggest where the person should be, or not be, unless they asked for your important opinion. I did not determine that SkylightMoon was naïve after this post. Did you Spehss?

“…wvw players are only a small fraction of the entire community and do not give anet any revenue directly…”

Incorrect. We have had people on this forum [and others in game] that revealed they have spent 500$ while focused on WvW. In this way the player provides direct revenue. There was a British guy in my guild who spent 300$+ [converting currency to gems] or more buying legendary weapons on the market for combat appearances. This was a WvW player providing direct revenue. I believe there are many others.

“wvw players are only a small fraction of the entire community …” I disagree. Do you have real numbers? I don’t. In my experience large portions of the player base (on multiple servers) found themselves dragged into WvW regardless of their interests.

SkylightMoon, SpehssMehreen, both of you failed to communicate that you understand why people are angry. Do that first if you expect to have some kind of audience with the angry gamers.

"hidden rolls" for WvW MU different EU/NA?

in WvW

1) NA and EU bracket volatility is different. 2) Players on both sides have different methods of compensating for this. When I saw Devon go straight into explaining the mechanics of the matchup I wanted him to stop and acknowledge that the match-up mechanics are not the only process! The players have created their own “process” (which has complicated the design).

So….my input has less to do with the original poster and more to do with communicating the details…. =)

the euros may in general value fair matches more than americans since the degree of server stacking is lower. and thus higher volatility is a source of frustration.

i dont really see players compensating for volatility, i see different volatility as an effect of player attitudes on a large scale o.O

its reasonable that 2 (more or less isolated) populations have evolved different metas

Hey that is excellent feedback insanemaniac! My point of view is from NA bracket and the frustration of population stacking [and community implosions]. I see volatility in the EU matches and think, “Wow, this is not working as intended. The EU bracket should have less volatility considering they have a more even population spread.”

From my point of view again, NA bracket players do change how they play to compensate for the changes over time in the match making process. For example, I avoid tier 1 population servers after my own server population imploded and declined.(there are many different player responses).

“I see different volatility as an effect of player attitudes on a large scale …” This makes sense to me.

But I will argue it is the other way around for NA bracket. On this side….I know [we know] that the population stacking began since launch and would never stop. Currently, there is no mechanic that punishes the behavior and I expect it to continue [until fundamental changes occur]. Does that make sense?

We’ve got thick skins, but I certainly appreciate constructive feedback. It’s also much more likely to receive a response both in the forums and in the game. So, as always, make good suggestions in a positive way and you’ll see changes. Cheers!

This is usually how it works, and why is it people don’t understand this is way beyond me.

You’ve got more spoiled brats to deal with in here then the PvP and PvE teams have to deal with.

PvE complains about Living Story, they want more permanent content. Open more areas, more world bosses that are actually challenging to fight, and more armour sets and weapon skins.

PvP mostly wants more balancing, more maps and more modes. Mostly those three.

WvW just seems to kitten and complain about every little thing. I don’t know how it is you are able to deal with it. If I were you? I’d probably have lost my job due to me lashing out at everyone who demands huge changes and improvements with the snap of a finger.

Failure. Who are you to insult thousands of WvW players? What do you know about the WvW player experience? Do you know where to find the constructive threads on the forum players have been making for a year?

“…everyone who demands huge changes and improvements with the snap of a finger.” Yes, I [and others] demand changes and improvements. We have waited patiently for a year. Meanwhile, we will vote with our feet [that means I won’t log in]. Think about that before you start a reply insulting your peers.

Okay, and? Why don’t you go work for ArenaNet, if you think you can do better?

The one thing I do hate that a lot of developers seem to do is keep the community left in the dark about almost everything. But aside from that it seems you missed the point.

If you get off your high horse and actually suggest, or give positive feedback? Perhaps they’ll be more inclined to tell you spoiled brats what the hell is going on.

Though I don’t know, I can’t read Devon’s mind.

I don’t own a horse. I am not higher than you. I have given both positive and negative feedback. Do you need links? Did you read all the developer responses? I made a thread for that…

"hidden rolls" for WvW MU different EU/NA?

The roll is absolutely the same on each.

Wait Devon. Jayne has played in both NA bracket and EU bracket. Her experience matters.

how do you think devons post trivializes jaynes?

with the same roll, tighter rankings = more disparate matches

^This pretty much.

Not exactly sure how any of it is contradictory or trivialized to what Devon said either.

Tighter ranking means higher volatility. Which, as far as I can see, isn’t that big an issue for EU servers, barring a few exceptions. That tighter ranking also means reasonable competitiveness, different opponents on different weeks, with the exception of facing Viz. Most of EU doesn’t complain about this volatility, they just get out there and fight. And that’s likely because the EU guilds haven’t stacked any one server to the extreme it’s been done in NA, so there’s always a reasonable and good fight each week, regardless of server ranking.

Augh. So both of you did not understand me? Let me have one more shot. I did not use the terms “contradictory or trivialized.” I understand this statement; “Tighter ranking means higher volatility.” Yes, and most of the EU doesn’t complain about the volatility. The gameplay evolved differently to compensate for the game structure limitations. Yes, EU has not stacked as many servers to the extreme as its been done on NA.

Jayne, your post was interesting because you have played both sides. No one acknowledged your experience or the differences between the two brackets…communicating understanding of what you wrote is what matters to me. 1) NA and EU bracket volatility is different. 2) Players on both sides have different methods of compensating for this. When I saw Devon go straight into explaining the mechanics of the matchup I wanted him to stop and acknowledge that the match-up mechanics are not the only process! Are there any plans to reward smaller organized teams and punish the current zerging mentality ?

Dont think punish is the mentality we should take into a discussion about improving wvw.

That said megablobbing is often incredibly boring and stale gameplay, especially if the opposing server cannot muster and equivalent force and it’s a pvd farmfest.

However, megablob vs megablob on the open field can actually be very fun, some of the most epic battles ive been part of are 60+ man fights with both sides running in 20+ man teams to coordinate flanks and pincers on the open field.

100+ players fighting in coordinated teams is really quite a fantastic experience.

Sadly, it’s been weeks since that last happened, as the meta has now moved to largely avoiding open field where possible in t1/2, and spamming golems/omegas on the attack or hiding in towers your off hours coverage has upgraded for you.

Tier 3 is also using masses [25-30] of golems on the attack [this is a result of the high supply and low expense of golems in the game].

Devon I understand you have limited resources and dev’s to do “everything at once”. The changes that players would like to see are the things that FRUSTRATE us on a daily basis. Pet Peeves and annoyances that build daily and cause full blown rage in some people. (I’ve seen it and it wasn’t pretty.)

The lack of being able to group and coordinate in a functional manner is one of those things. It actually feels DIFFICULT to group in gw2 the way we enjoy. Any changes are great, but I really feel that existing systems need to be addressed before adding NEW content.

- Upgrade the Commander and Squad system. Flexible social grouping in GW2 should be a PRIORITY. The commander and squad system needs to be flexible enough to be used for Public or Private/Guild forces. We are unable to group the way we enjoy with only two ways to group in game for GW2. A 5 person group or Zerg are not enough options for players to coordinate.

- Fix the UI group options in WvW. We need the same working “right-click” options in WvW that we have in any other PvE zone. Reforming groups because we can’t remove offline players and typing player invites during WvW combat are frustrating.

I feel whatever limited resources you have should be directed to these basic issues.

It is almost blasphemy to support a JQ idea [joking] but I support a focus on these topics Ahmrill.

There are some updates coming soon, quite soon even, that hopefully will dispel this. Say bye-bye to the Quaggan.

As a former Team Legacy member and commander I have to say that this is a poor design choice. Quaggan have always been the most important aspect of the borderlands and we made it a goal to have everyone farm pearls prior to reset in order to maintain control of the borderlands.

I want to point out that very few WvW players [and developers] understand why farming pearls to insta flip quaggan nodes makes a difference in WvW [it does, its a known strategy].

Stop kittening around and give us a test client so WvW players can do the hard work [Developers do not know the game better than the players].

You and Devon did not pay attention to the experience presented to you. Another EU player commented after you. Why don’t you try again to listen? I don’t care how the match works. The experience of the player is: There is more volatility in the EU matches than found in the NA bracket [and that is correct]. This experience must be appreciated.

I just want to point out that the large open area just down the ramps from the start of the EB jumping puzzle would be an AMAZING place for a gvg. The windmill is such incredibly boring terrain. The start of the puzzle has plenty of LOS to play around with, multiple levels, choke points and even water! It becomes even more attractive if the reintroduction of orbs messes with player stats. Finally, there are tons of incredible spots for spectators to perch on to get a bird’s eye view of the action!

IMHO it would incorporate a lot of open field elements that aren’t available in windmill gvgs (something that pushes a lot of guilds away from having interest in them).

Please move your post to the GvG showdown thread by Ogre where it will be seen by the relevant audience. They will have opinions…

@Chefdiablo, allowing an objective which in all probability will be able to have siege/defensive position to give a extreme bonus to the side holding it, doesn’t just affect guilds after GvG. It affects roaming guilds, roaming individuals, people who play this game solely for the epic fights to be had. At a guess I’d say less than 33% of players give a rats right testicle about points and server ranking. It’s obvious during each week which servers come out and fight tooth and nail, and which PVD and have about as much skill as green recruits into game even after 11months.

So to buff say by 150 to all stats for sieging up a location and zzzz having ppl sit there on siege defending it. It will KILL roaming for small scale.

I’ve always said the OUTMANNED buff should be +stats while the “orb” should be FLUFF meaningless to people to who care about fights, but worthwhile to the folks who don’t actually fight, like +MF +Gold +XP +WXP +Karma

But no they won’t think about giving the underdog an even playing field… Wouldn’t make sense no sir.

@Problematic – http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dT3cmZKd8pg They have spent a few hours on 2 or 3 servers in EU yes. Just running around like headless sheep, no better than the average EB zergling. We had invited them to join us for a guild drunken warband night, alas turned down on that occasion.
Offer still stands though Devon Carter Let me know a night towards end of august your available (ideally European prime time till late) and you can come experience a guild raid :-D

OMG! See, this is how to change the game. Get this guy in the game. Get the “other” Anet Developer Team employee’s in the game. They need to group with the community and see the combat field more often. Then communication can happen, feedback, and exchange of ideas! What is holding [Devon & team] them back?

I am reposting this from a different thread that won’t open anymore. Topic is relevant to the WvW community.

“A WvW claim:
More than 50% of the NA bracket hardcore multi-game organizations/guilds are no longer active in the WvW scene. Information needed: A compiled list of multi-game guilds [NA bracket] that entered GW2 at launch. A list of current multi-game guilds active in NA bracket WvW. Q: How many of these multi-game guilds operate under reduced activity? Q: How much of each organizations membership is inactive? I claim that 50% of these groups are no longer active in the NA bracket of WvW. I want to test that claim. I need data. I will not do such a project by myself [this could be a project for Anet]. Anyone ready to challenge that claim? Anyone interested in this project?”

Perhaps we should all arrange for a list of the top changes that gamers desire for the next patch (categorized by PvP, WvW, PvE) and take a poll for the content of it. Not everyone will be happy, but it presents the Tech team with a clearer understanding of how to keep us engrossed without slapping them with blame for not having done it all yet. It will also give us a chance make a more positive influence on this game that we choose to spend our precious time on. Peace.

Do it. The user content suggestions [top changes] are all over the place. Needs organizing into one thread with links.

TIL thick skinned means responding to favorable posts “like be nice, guys” and not challenging negative, but constructive, ones.

A WvW claim:
More than 50% of the NA bracket hardcore multi-game organizations/guilds are no longer active in the WvW scene. Anyone ready to challenge that claim? Information needed: A compiled list of multi-game guilds that entered GW2 at launch. Q: How many of these multi-game guilds operate under reduced activity? I will not do such a project by myself [this could be a project for Anet].

Opinion:
They have been replaced by less serious players

Is anyone interested in compiling a list of the “big” names that moved on? Do we want to talk about membership/activity level of the ones that remain? Lets see some data.

Well, WvW doesn’t have the depth to be taken seriously, so the demographic matches with the design. And as long as metrics prove that players are still playing I doubt any meaningful changes will take place. If changes do occur it won’t exactly affect the level of engagement or depth. Case in point, progression update that ANet made such a big deal about a few months back did little but add slow power creep to a stale game mode. There was also culling but that was looooong overdue.

It’s not so bad though as there are plenty of promising games on the horizon. I’ve readied my bags ages ago.

That is an interesting response. It would be helpful to know who you played with, what server, how long ago you left? “WvW doesn’t have the depth to be taken seriously,” OK, I can work with that. Would you agree that players were expecting depth? Would you agree we wanted depth? Would you agree that players offered ideas how to increase depth in WvW?

“And as long as metrics prove that players are still playing I doubt any meaningful changes will take place. " I share this concern. The point of my post was this concern. I find it misleading to say population is stable or improving in WvW. The players that have replaced those who left are not the same. I estimate that many older “1st gen” gamers quit and were replaced by younger gamers. There is a generational difference in expectations between them. Does anyone appreciate that fact?

Here’s the thing to remember, it may buff the better servers for a time, but if it is relatively easy to take from a better server, it isn’t going to cause nearly the same problems that the original buff did. I will say that when this goes back into the game, we’ll continue to monitor the effects and make changes as necessary.
[/quote]

The history of the Orbs is a touchy subject [I think WvW players will agree]. More than one multi-game organization left the scene during the Orb abuse days. Be careful.

Devon how much time has the WvW Development Team spent in WvW? How much time was spent with the remaining organized WvW guilds? You have so much work to do…I do not envy your position.

Furthermore, your work load could be less. The Developer Team will find community members with the skills to compile feedback, threads, concerns, criticism, ideas, etc. in a more organized manner. Do you need that? Use them. People need to know [if] you are looking for that. You will find [community respected] guilds on the field that will give you the state of the game in WvW. Use them. Brief the community that you are seeking information. [You will get different feedback on the combat field than on the forums].

Make two ladders.
One that includes (historical matches for historical reference of who was active at certain times).
One that is reset like normal ladders after a certain amount of time with a winner declared.

Lets point out that the game format is not being assisted by developers and it is unusual for players to be making structure decisions…

This morning the Magumma train visited SoS BL on schedule. We screamed for help but ran into communication issues. I advised citizens to have some fun. Mags do you remember your fascination with randomly placed flame rams? What happens when aggressive baddies come together? Here are some screenshots to show you we are not always serious:

1. Randomly placed troll siege
2. Your very own flame ram in the Lord room
3. Golems with kites (because we don’t need golems)

After all this this Syno received a marriage proposal. All in a days work.
