Hey just popping in to say, one of the best places to do this is COF p2, nobody has to hold a cutscene for you. You can easily log out after the boss dies, and get into the dungeon for the reward during the obnoxiously long unskippable dialogue time.
its not that your playing the wrong class, its that in general melee dps is higher than range dps, and so usually dungeons expect you to use melee
But seriously, I can’t stress this enough. Rather than forcing yourself to fit into the typical lfg, considering making your own lfg post that specifically says things like “no stacking”, “play how you want”,“fun run”, etc. I swear I did this when I was just starting, and its a solid way to learn the dungeon paths.
Eventually you may find that you grow tired of the slower styles, and start naturally adopting what typically speedy groups use. Maybe then, try out some of the more elite lfgs.
Also, if your group gets stuck, this a good resource to read: http://gw2dungeons.net/
It has guides for every path, and often multiple strategies for both skipping and not skipping etc.
I never get these posts. How is wearing different armor exciting? How about more fights where we are swapping out weapons and utilities to outsmart our foes, and utilizing the combat system.
Honestly I already have an entire 18 slot bag dedicated to just my weapons on my warrior, and I only have specialized weapons for arah. I don’t want to throw sets of armor in there too.
Add a boss who you HAVE to keep cc locked or they are a guaranteed party wipe. Make it so that boss only takes damage from cc and now everyone is really running some weird stuff for that one encounter.
Add a boss that has a boat load of self boons, and applies a lot of conditions, all of a suddenly necro is becoming more desirable. Hell, this could even be the buff lupicus gets from grubs.
Also add a lupicus you can’t cheese wall, now people are bringing group stability, reflects, blocks, etc.
Add a boss that has wicked high toughness, suddenly everyone is gonna retrait for condi. You start seeing sword warriors in pve. That could still be a pain though, as we may have to carry sinister, then again, 1 of my 8 characters is full sinister so it seems good to me lol.
Add a boss who’s attack animations are effected by chill. Now perma chill is huge for damage mitigation for that one fight. How weird is that?
Add a boss that we all fight in power suits/with bundles.
It just seems like there are so many cooler ways to make pve combat awesome rather than some unavoidable damage so your forced to bring toughness/vit/healing power.
Rangers are welcome in a lot of (experienced) dungeon groups because of their class unique buffs. However, any player who insists on running with ranged weapons will be kicked from dungeons, this isn’t ranger specific. Melee weapons cleave, ranged weapons can be traited to pierce, but pierce is unreliable. So by running ranged your dps is literally between 1/5 and 1/2 what it could be a lot of the time.
The solution is, put up an lfg that says “p#, play how you want”. You will still get a full group pretty quickly, they just won’t be the type of group that stacks/skips/stealths etc.
yes. I am talking from a pve perspective here.
People always bring up utility. If your using ranged, then your probably fighting a boss, ie your actually worried about stripping defiance, as a coordinated strip followed by your groups longest lasting cc is gonna be more useful than your , your goal is to do as many cc’s as possible but not to be the one who’s cc actually gets through. Compare the cd of rifle 5 to lb 5. rifle gets you a lot more cc. Additionally, since warrior sprint isn’t going to help you, and neither is fast hands, you can always put 2 points into tactics and get leg specialist, turning rifle 2 into a cc, if your a dps warrior. If your a ps/ea warrior you can just give up inspiring banners/empower, not that bad a trade for a cc on 10 sec cd cc.
Additionally, rifle gives you nearly permanent 8 stacks of vulnerability when you bring crack shot. So, if your group is gonna be vulnerability deficient you should consider that.
Lets talk dps. Your dps on a boss is 0 if his ads are gona soak up all your attacks. So, for example, if your trying to do damage to copper boss in silverwastes, your arrows aren’t going to reach the boss a lot of the time. But piercing bullets will. Additionally, if your fighting many enemies who you wish to hit, piercing bullets will be a big deal in terms of total dps. And don’t forget, your vulnerability will go on all the targets you pierce. Of course, the bow also has aoes, at the expense of berserker’s power possibly.
So yeah, there are advantages to the rifle, there are also advantages to the bow. But, in reality, if your using ranged, just bring both + fast hands. Melee + ranged hybrids are not that great in pve. Gs + axe/mace has 6 attacks you could easily use from outside melee range when trying heal: axe 3, mace 5, gs 3, gs 4, gs5+dodge to get out, axe f1. If your looking to get some breathing room to heal a ranged weapon isn’t all that necessary.
However, if you insist on being one of those people who bring 1 melee weapon and 1 ranged weapon into a group fight I think rifle is better. You can at least use rifle 4 at the very beginning then switch to camping gs.

my whole guild dced, and i can even get back into vanilla
Illconceived Was Na I took your advice, and added that to the tldr.
Also Acotje, half the threads in this subforum are people posting links to youtube videos of speed runs, and your gonna hate on a suggestion thread?
Linken I’m on my 6th lv 80. Whats the point in “learning to play” on a lv 10. A lv 1-79 plays completely differently than a lv 80. You don’t even get access to grandmaster traits till lv 80.
Lets use warrior as an example. Without a grandmaster trait, the entire adrenaline mechanic is completely unused in pve. Lets not forget you don’t unlock ps until 80 either. Just because I don’t want to herd cows without any swiftness doesn’t mean I don’t want to learn how to play other classes.
Everything you brought up I addressed in my original post. I am pointing out that right now, dungeons exp rewards are broken compared to pvp exp rewards. Swapping characters during the final cut scene is silly, borderline exploit, meanwhile the entire daily system got an overhaul so that players could quickly do dailies on their main, but still level up their alts, encouraging players to try new classes without the tedious grind. I just want dungeons to be put on equal footing.

I personally, think that if your just playing the game, it should never be considered an exploit. If your modifying software, hacking etc, yes clearly bannable. But if what your doing can be done in the vanilla version of the game by a regular human, I think it should be considered bad design but open game for players. If something is seriously unfair, roll back the accounts, take away all their gold, take away achievements. But I don’t think its ethical to ban players for playing the game as it is presented to us, just because they were clever.
bump to make dungeons equivalent at alt leveling
I probably have one of the oddest setups for gw2. I bought an orbweaver and tried it out, it was very comfortable but the thumbstick is 8 way digital instead of an analog stick, so you can’t use it for movement. Then I bought a G13, it has the analog stick, but my wrist laying flat isn’t very comfortable for me. I returned them both. Seemed solid, but not for me.
So finally, I bought a g700 mouse which has 12 buttons on it, as well as a razer sabertooth which is an xbox 360 controller with 3 additional buttons (on the underside).
I keep the controller in my left hand, and the mouse in my right hand. The mouse has 5 of its buttons bound to numbers 1-5. The controller has modifier buttons (through xpadder), like shift and ctrl. So I can hit all attacks, utilities (shift), and f keys(ctrl) without looking away from the screen in any way.
Weird set up, but it avoids wrist pain for me, and gives me an analog stick for movement (which I love) while also giving me a mouse (which I also love).
well i included the DR part because otherwise it would be a huge buff to the ability to level alts quickly. Not that I really have a problem with that, but Anet could. If they decided to get rid of the DR so be it, I just wanted to included my take on a system that would be comparable to something already in the game.
I actually covered that in the first section, do you really consider that “working”?

Ok so thats the entire post. Please post your suggestions, and let me know if I missed anything.
SUGGESTION AND COMPARISON TO OTHER GAME MODES
Before I discuss this, just so everyone can understand my terminology, currently a writ of experience gives 5% of the exp currently needed to level up. So 75% of a level would be 75 / 5 = 15 writs of experience.
I am not suggesting every dungeon give 15 writs of experience. That could easily be the fastest method of leveling alts. Actually I would suggest that they implement a diminishing rewards system for the exp, and make the first unique dungeon you do in a day give 15 writs, the second dungeon give 7 writs, and all following dungeons give you 3 writs of experience.
However, players who farm dungeons for skill points would be screwed over by this. So, make the repeatable dungeon hobbyist achievement give 3 skill point scrolls, this would keep current skill point rewards pretty much where they are as .75*5 = 3.75. Then when you account for the skill points due to the writs, its pretty close.
Now, lets compare this to current reward tracks for pvp. Right now, using a hot join daily server like MAD skyhammer you can pretty reliably get 3 pvp dailies done in 8 minutes. Typically you get 4 potion of pvp rewards from that, each of which is half a reward bar. Meaning you need 10 potions to get a tome of knowledge. But there is also the win bonus from actually winning the game. This is not always the full 500 points, as you may not always get full credit, but overall I would estimate it to be about the same as a potion of knowledge on the average. So, approximately, 8 minutes a day can get you half a level on your alt doing pvp dailies. Notice, you can actually do this on your alt because in the mists your upleveled to 80, given all traits and skills, and any armor you want basically. This is leveling available to someone on their very first day playing gw2.
Let’s compare this to my proposed system. I am going to use the time data I have collected in dungeons. I can reliably pug COF p1 in 8-10 minutes using the lfg “p1, 80s, exp, 3k ap +” on my ps/ea banner warrior using axe/mace – gs. And, in my new system, it would be 75% of an alt level. However, this is also a method of leveling not available to first day players. It requires knowledge of the game, and your build. So I believe the slightly faster leveling rate is warranted, but it could easily be nerfed down as desired.
Also, the diminishing rewards lines up well with the way pvp reward tracks work. Once your past the higher daily rewards, and your getting only the match win bonus, you can count on about half a reward bar per 8 minutes. I.E. 10% of a level on your alt. Now compare this to about 10-15 minutes for the medium length dungeons, and my proposed 3 writs of experience. 3 writs of experience are 15% of a level, I think that is a fair boost considering dungeons require more skill, and are not accessible on day 1 of account creation.
tldr:
Change the current dungeon reward of 70% of a level for the character completing a dungeon to:
- 15 Writs of Experience for the first dungeon/day/account (75% of a level for any character on the account).
- 7 Writs for the second dungeon.
- 3 Writs for each subsequent dungeon.
- Make dungeon hobby achieve give 3 skill point scrolls
SUMMARY OF SYSTEM/PROBLEM:
So right now, the way dungeons work is that when you complete the final boss you get some dungeon dependent gold reward, tokens, and 70% of a character level.
However, attempting to actually do dungeons on a non level 80 character is crazy. Even fairly loose lfgs generally expect 80s, because even though you may be down leveled from 80 depending on the dungeon, you get to keep all your traits. Additionally, most people don’t bother with full rune sets/good armor until lv 80. There is frankly a huge increase in utility between lv 79 and lv 80. This means that all that experience pretty much goes to waste.
Some of you may say, “hey, that’s your problem for bringing an over leveled character into a lower level dungeon.”. I will point out to you that 3/8 dungeons are lv 80 zones, and still give this large exp reward. This is a problem in all reasonable styles of play.
Because of this, players currently try to get the best of both worlds. They will run the dungeon on their preferred level 80 character, and then, part way through the final boss, quickly log out, log in to their lower level character, join the dungeon and (loading screens permitting) get the reward on the desired character. I think this system could be improved. It’s not fun, and it clearly gives an advantage to players with better computers/internet connections. Additionally, its just plain obstructive to natural game play.
WHY THIS MATTERS
It is the nature of this game, that some classes do better in different situations. If everyone was running around with 5 level 80s, Anet could design much more interesting boss mechanics. Boon stripping, reflects, blinds, fears, stealth, all of these could be made into necessary parts of boss fights, opposed to the current standard which is kind of repetitive.
Right now, I believe Anet is giving loud signals that they want us to level our alts. Dailies give writs of exp now. Perfect. Additionally we have dailies that give entire levels now. For example, daily keep capturer in wvw gives a tome of knowledge. Daily 1-10 fractal gives a tome of knowledge. Doing your pvp dailies on any reward track is almost always giving you half a tome of knowledge. Anet wants us to work on all 5 of our characters, and its time we bring dungeons in line with this philosophy.
