- Is Legendary armor better than Ascended armor stat wise?
Absolutely, 100% no. Just as Legendary weapons and Ascended weapons have the same stats, Legendary armor and Ascended armor have the same stats. The difference is the addition of stat-switching, something I’d be pretty excited to have in armor.
Edit: one additional consideration… what if Legendary armor could be used on any toon and not limited by weight? So I could use the same gear on my Warrior and Mesmer? I’m not sure if that’s appropriate or not, but I’d LOOOOOVE to never have to craft more armor. :-D
- Can this legendary armor be obtained anywhere else in the game?
I could go either way on this. I’d want the raids to at least have a unique Legendary armor skin which cannot be acquired elsewhere. I would think there would be additional Legendary armor skins available through other content: perhaps Fractals. A crafted set would also be a good idea, but it would have to reflect the time and effort required to obtain the raid set. Meaning: you shouldn’t be able to easily craft Legendary armor when it’s a pain in the kitten to get it through raids.
- How do we prevent the introduction of Legendary armor from invalidating players who spent a lot of time/money crafting their Ascended armor?
Honestly, there’s no way to play this perfectly. I would suggest considering a “shortcut” by using existing Ascended armor. Perhaps there’s a Forge recipe that converts existing Ascended armor to the raid-upgradeable Ascended armor. If it requires 20 runs to get the raid Ascended armor, perhaps it requires 10 of those charges to upgrade an existing Ascended piece? Enough that it still requires substantial effort on the raid, but less than it would take to create a new piece.
- Is this a drop from raid encounters, or is it obtained through a “raiding reward track”?
My suggestion was a mix. The Ascended piece can, on rare occasions, drop directly, but you have a guaranteed progress track alongside it. So maybe you get lucky and save yourself some time, but in general, you’re making progress along a fixed path of acquisition.
I think you can see where I’m going with this. Ascended armor is already a pretty hotly debated topic because it did introduce a very slight vertical progression to the game.
Personally, I think the problem with Ascended weapons and armor is that they increased stats beyond Exotics. That’s why you saw a huge outcry at the initial release but not when the Tequatl weapons were added. Much less outrage at “oh, that’s a cool skin, I have to do WHAAAAAT to get it?” than “oh, my BiS gear is no longer BiS and I have to do WHAAAAAT to get the new stuff?”

I wouldn’t sweat it, Chris. Your topic is a bit more nebulous and a lot more loaded. I’m starting Beast Mode in fantasy, so I’ll be cheering along with you.
www.getunicorned.com / northernshiverpeaks.org
Sure thing, Chris. I feel like the discussion of rewards progression in particular could use some guidance. I had suggested earlier a system by which players could earn Legendary Raid Armor through a progression system. I was expecting a lot of strong reactions, but I mostly heard silence.
Curious as to what others think. Personally, I think raids need unique (read: can only be earned in raids) reward skins that are earned either through RNG or a progression system. (Meaning: you can get them as a drop if you’re lucky, but you get a fixed-effort backup option as well.)

This thread is growing far too fast for any normal human being to keep up with. Chris, do you think it’d be appropriate at this point to ask slightly more focused questions? As somebody who pops in every day or so, I’m finding there are a few pages covering five topics whenever I come back. By the time I catch up, it’s typically too late to contribute. :-(
www.getunicorned.com / northernshiverpeaks.org
nice idea but i wouldnt want to play with exotic gear when i already crafted ascended. id prefer visual progression over gear progression even if the only special thing about it is the ability to change stats.
I would suggest you can charge any gear in your inventory, not necessarily just what you’r wearing. Also, I anticipated unique looks for the Exotic, Ascended, and Legendary gear set, so you’d get visual progression in addition to stat progression.
www.getunicorned.com / northernshiverpeaks.org
I wanted to suggest a progression system. I’m only caught up to page 12, so I apologize if this is inappropriate at this time, but I’m finding that there’s 2 new pages every time I read one.
I think Raids should mean the introduction of Legendary armor. Legendary Armor has the same stats as Ascended but allows for stat-switching, just like Legendary weapons. Legendary armor is earned in raids through a progression system that starts with an exotic. Let’s use bullet points.
- Each Raid is broken into 6 sections, perhaps with a specific challenge or boss. These get harder as you go.
- Each section drops a corresponding piece of gear. The first time you complete it on a character, you get an Exotic with a fixed set of stats.
- Each time you complete that section in the future, your gear piece earns a “charge.” After a certain number of “charges” (maybe 10?) the gear piece can be upgraded.
- The upgrade cycle is Exotic with fixed stats, Exotic with selectable stats, Ascended with fixed stats, Ascended with selectable stats, Legendary
- The selectable stats on Exotic and Ascended raid gear can only be made once
- For each section, one player chosen at random in the group will receive a Super Charge with allows a piece to be upgraded a full cycle. There’s still some RNG for fun.
I created an image that might help to explain what I mean.
I feel like this ties together the concepts of raid-specific gear and rewards with the progression systems we’ve seen for things like the Mawdrey backpiece. There is a fixed level of effort before you can get your Legendary armor, but at the same time, you could luck out and shorten the process.
In addition, if your group isn’t good enough to complete the entire raid, you can still work toward some pieces of Legendary armor, just not the full set.
www.getunicorned.com / northernshiverpeaks.org
I’m not a member of DnT, but Nike’s thoughts above are very reasonable and I think meet my expectations of what a raid should be in GW2.

Hi Yin! There’s a ton of great guilds on SoR you can join. I’m relatively partial to my own, but if you tell us a bit more about what you’re looking for, perhaps we can find the best match.
Some useful information:
- What game types/modes do you enjoy playing?
- Are you looking for a large or small community?
- Would you prefer a community that is voice-heavy or textchat-heavy?
- Any special requests? (For example, SoR has a prominent Christians-only guild for players who want that sort of thing.)
If I’m slow to respond, feel free to PM me here or in-game. Good luck with your guild search!

Yeah, really.
Look through these posts. How many of these posts are seeking experienced WvW players? All of them? 95% of them?
Yes, every guild and server would love to get a sudden infusion of incredibly skilled players. But guess what? The best guilds and the best communities aren’t the ones that are made up of elite players who come together – the All Star team – they’re the ones that are made up of new, raw, untested players who grow and learn together.
I run a PvX guild full of really awesome people. We’re small (about 10-15 online daily, mostly in the 6pm-12pm Eastern US time zone, though we’re hoping to grow that range) and have just been expanding into WvW over the past few months. We’d love to add a few more members to our ranks, specifically players who might be newer to the mode but willing to learn.
Here’s what we expect of you:
- On the Sanctum of Rall server or willing to transfer
- Able to join Teamspeak – no microphone required, but you have to at least listen
- Patient enough to understand that development takes time but impatient enough to strive to get there faster
- Willing and able to fit in with our diverse community
- GamerGaters not welcome
Here’s what we offer in return:
- Inside jokes, mostly lame hashtags
- Custom PvP Arena
- Grumble cakes
- A safer gaming community for people who might often feel uncomfortable around your average Gamer Bro
- Training sessions for Dungeons, Fractals, WvW, and WvW Commanding
- Sweet unicorn logo
- WvW usually 2 or 3 days/week
My goal is to get the right players, not just warm bodies, so all new players go through a trial period where we can determine if we’re a good fit for each other. If you’re not on SoR, you’re welcome to join and run PvE content with us for a few weeks to see if it’s worth your gold to transfer.
In keeping with Sanctum of Rall policy, we do not pay for transfer fees for incoming players.
PM me for more info, or if you’re already on the Sanctum of Rall Teamspeak, just jump down to the MEGA channel and say hi to Karaoke.

But I once saw a GS Mesmer say it knockbacked mobs in zerg settings out of spite because it got zero loot otherwise. So every class has them.

www.getunicorned.com / northernshiverpeaks.org
Rangers use the skill not only to knock back an enemy, but also to interrupt an enemy attack. An enemy that might just have caused harm to the players in melee range, and the players complaining about the ranger attack. The interrupt is only seen by the ranger when the word ‘interrupt’ comes up.
Perhaps so, but many melee players can also interrupt without doing a knockback, that is something those Rangers don’t see, anytime you hit a creature in the middle of performing it’s attack you can interrupt it, so it works both ways.
This is why Rangers are so infuriating. First off, I don’t need you to negate the damage for me, I can dodge, sidestep, or use damage-mitigating skills. Secondly, I also have interrupts on my Hammer Warrior, but instead of using them to interrupt the auto-attacks, I use them to interrupt the heals. (If we’re talking about WvW camps, for example.)
Longbow #4 is the worst.

I have heard of people who have everything but the precursor. Or people who have 20 or 30 Gifts of Exploration.
The map completion is in no way the worst part of the Legendary process.

Which begs the question why for 9 long years has Arenanet in both GW1 & 2 constantly tried to join the two together! (imho) fairly simple equation, if you want to really make a PvP game then make a PvP game don’t sugar coat it with an outstandingly beautiful PvE, or do both and keep them separate from each other.
It’s almost like the idea of PvE and PvP being totally separate things is a construct that some players have come up with and ArenaNet has spent 9 long years attempting to send the message that GW isn’t a PvE-only game or a PvP-only game, but rather a game with mixed aspects meant to be enjoyed as a comprehensive whole where each part enhances the other.
www.getunicorned.com / northernshiverpeaks.org
It doesn’t seem weird to me that world completion requires the completion of all maps (from the original release) which include a substantial number of WPs, PoIs, vistas, skill points, and hearts.

Good luck with the husband. :-)

You do realize that you can get 100% map completion without getting “Been There, Done That” correct? You can’t get the latter without the former, but you can get the former without the latter. Map completion only covers the sp, poi, waypoints, etc. It doesn’t require you to unfog the whole map. So there is a distinction there.
I’m not speaking of “unfogging the map.” When I speak of “map completion,” I’m talking about receiving the 100% Zone rewards for all relevant zones, unlocking the yellow star and associated title.
But yes, you can get the achievements Orr Explorer, Ascalon Explorer, etc (or whatever they’re called) without also getting BTDT.
I think you misunderstood me.
You can get 100% map completion without getting BTDT. Map completion just requires the activities on the various maps. BTDT requires both the activities as well as the unfogging – ie it requires 100% map completion and 100% exploration completion. 2 sep things.
I wasn’t referring to the specific ‘Explorer’ components, of which you must get them all to get BTDT.
Either:
1) I misunderstand you
2) You are wrong
3) The wiki is wrong
“You can complete most maps without uncovering all of its areas (those are tracked by the regional Explorer achievements); for example, you do not need to find most jumping puzzles, since these are in secluded areas without any map objectives to discover.”
http://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/World_completion#World_completion
I’m not sure it’s relevant to our discussion anyway, but Been There. Done That. does not require full unfogging as best as I can tell.
www.getunicorned.com / northernshiverpeaks.org
I think it’d make more sense to add dungeon/PvP waypoints and PoIs to World Completion than to remove WvW from the list.

Example before I even brought Guild Wars 2 I was looking forward to this mysterious place called WvW now its a place I am “forced” to go too, not on my own terms when I feel I want to for a bit of a change, but in order to get 100% I have to go there.
Please keep in mind I have zero aspirations for legendary anything…
“In order to get 100%”
So just don’t get 100%. If you can’t overcome the challenge, you don’t deserve the reward. The reward which provides no extra gameplay. And is completely unnecessary.
I’ll give you an example: I suck at jumping puzzles. I spent hours banging my head on Mad King’s Clocktower. I gave up.
I didn’t cheat. I didn’t run to the forums to beg and plead ArenaNet to give me the title/reward for trying my hardest. I simply did. not. get. the. title. Same thing for Liadri: it seemed like a pain, I was busy, so I didn’t get the title.
(However, the second time they came around, I committed myself to them and managed to complete both of them.)
Don’t want to be in a PvP environment? Don’t ever step into WvW. That’s fine!
…buuuuuut you don’t get the “Been There. Done That.” title because YOU WEREN’T THERE AND YOU DIDN’T DO THAT.

Optional or not does not help people feel less forced, or less like they are being made to play a certain way.
Read this again.
This is the fundamental problem with so many unhappy gamers. “I have self-imposed rules which I must follow and their interaction with this game creates a situation I dislike.”
It’s just another facet of Scrub-ism.
Congratulations on being a kitten.
But I’ll stop trying to explain, you simply just don’t want to get it. Players feeling forced to play a specific way is not a new issue, in fact it goes all the way back to …well…when they dropped ascended into the game. There’s a big difference between what you’re talking about, and what I’m trying to explain.
It’s not that I don’t want to get it. I just disagree with you. I don’t think even the addition of Ascended gear (which I think was a horrible mistake) counts. YOU DO NOT NEED ASCENDED GEAR.
If you, individually, as a player, make the decision to acquire a title, piece of gear, achievement, etc, you cannot then claim ArenaNet is “forcing” you to play a certain way. You CHOSE to take that task typically with the full understanding of what it requires.
You can say “the reward is not worth the effort.” You can say “I don’t think this skin/title/chivo should require X.” You can say “I dislike content X.” You CANNOT SAY you were FORCED to do it.
(For my part, the WvW doesn’t bother me, but I HAAAAAATE Hearts and will likely never do world completion on another character. But I CANNOT SAY ARENANET FORCES ME TO DO HEARTS.)

Sariel, thanks to Glicko randomization, that’s not strictly true. There will certainly be periods of weeks at a time that the server doesn’t change colors, but patience and persistence will pay off, even on the last-ranked server.

I’ll post their color week-by-week starting now and going backward…
Red, Blue, Blue, Blue, Red, Green, Green, Blue, Blue, Red, Red, Blue, Blue, Green, Red…
There’s a substantial amount of bounce there, so it’s really just a matter of keeping your eyes on the map and allowing yourself a month or two in order to get everything.

In the end, what you’re saying is “This thing I don’t like should work the way that I like, not the way it actually works, because reasons which are debateable at best and mostly just further indication I don’t like it.”
You’re ABSOLUTELY welcome to not like it and think it should be changed, but pretending it’s because Long List of Marginal Reasons (e.g. it’s a PvE achievement!) is pointless.
You, and others, wish you could get map completion without doing WvW because you don’t like WvW. That’s fine. Stop pretending that it’s some sort of crime and just be straight about your dislike of WvW.

You don’t have to go into World vs World. You don’t have to get map completion. You don’t have to get a Legendary.
If you don’t like the requirements for obtaining an item, perhaps you shouldn’t get the item?
And if you want dungeon armor/gift/weapons and don’t want to do the actual dungeon runs, you can just pvp your way through it via the pvp title tracks. Wvw doesn’t have that option. They either have to go to pvp or they have to go to pve.
Double standard, no?
It’s not because you can buy the Legendary outright with gold. So there’s still an alternate acquisition method.

Are you guys serious?
It takes longer than two weeks to develop the patches that come out every two weeks. The team began working on the LW patches in March/April, iirc. They started releasing in July. They probably wrapped up those patches a couple weeks before the last release in August.
That means they built four patches in the months of March, April, May, June, and July. 4-5 months for 4 patches.
So how long for the last 4 patches? 4-5 months. July, August, September, October, and November.
This is a very simple concept, you just need to understand there are multiple teams working on long workstreams. No release DOES NOT EQUAL no work being done. Biweekly releases DOES NOT MEAN those releases only took two weeks.

Top 3:
- Core functionality for guilds of all sizes with additional cosmetic options for large guilds (or as a long term goal for small guilds)
- Instanced-only, or instanced with fixed, shared open-world entrances placed in logical locations (no floating guild halls above existing maps)
- Options within guild halls for guild leaders/officers to recognize/reward members for their contributions either manually or automatically (such as “most influence purchased” or “most gold deposited into guild bank”)

You guys are missing the point. Somebody almost had it earlier, but they didn’t quite connect the dots.
“Why does the NPE experience matter when you’re not advertising/getting new players?”
Good question. Here’s another good one:
“Don’t they realize an expansion would bring back a bunch of people and bring in a ton of new players?”
Of course they do. That’s why they did the NPE: BEFORE you release the expansion/big content drop/whatever, you fix your systems and ensure people have things to do when they come back/buy the game.
Think about Collections. Collections right now are kind of meh. But what about in new zones? Suddenly, Heart vendors have things you want! They have stuff for your Collections! New areas means new skins… which you unlock in the wardrobe!
If I were ArenaNet, my plan would be for LS2 Part 2 to lead into an expansion. We get one more zone heading toward Mordy and the story sets up what we’d be doing in the expansion. Anyway, that’s my bet: they’re working on it, the systems they’re building are necessary for the expansion content to retain players who come back/come in for the new content.
www.getunicorned.com / northernshiverpeaks.org
Honestly, this just depends on what you consider an “expansion.” We know they’re building a bunch of content. How? Well, there’s plenty of designers and writers who work at ArenaNet but aren’t on the Living World team. What are they doing?
Some of them have admitted to being on a “secret” project. Whatever that is, I hope it’s ready soon.

As for Rank X restricted rooms, wouldn’t that be segregating the very community that we are trying to unite?
That’s a good question. I think the idea of a rank-restricted meeting area has many real-world examples.
- Corporate Board Rooms
- Airline Clubs
- Military Central Command
I know I keep a password-protected channel on my voice server for private discussions. I can see the advantage of having an officer’s only room in the GH for sensitive discussions. Party chat can be used if you need to include 5 people or less, but right now, there’s not an easy way in-game to have a private chat with 8 people. (Or am I missing a way?)
Edit: and if there is a way, can we send all the ERP folks there?
www.getunicorned.com / northernshiverpeaks.org
I’m okay with private rooms in guild halls, but those should be designed for guild officers or certain ranks, not for individuals. Guild Halls should not be a poor man’s player housing.
Because of the way guild halls pretty much have to work to keep them from being insane grinds and to allow smaller guilds access, private banking guilds pretty much would be player housing. I don’t think there’s any way around it because some guilds are literally two or three people. While I don’t believe guild halls should be built specifically for those tiny guilds, we also can’t fairly set arbitrary limits on how many people qualifies as a ‘guild’.
Yeah, understood. That was more addressed at ideas like “this guild hall should have a bunch of little rooms that players can claim as their own and then customize…”
I think having one private area in each hall with a corresponding rank needed to enter is a good thing. But it should just be one room.

@Brown Fang, thanks for clarifying. I believe we’re exactly on the same page. Guild Leaders should be able to recognize individual members, but automated achievement boards shouldn’t be for trivial things.
Examples that might be cool:
- Statue for player who most recently account-bound a Legendary weapon
- Statue for player who entered Top 100 rank on PvP Leaderboard
- Statue for player who in past week finished 100% map completion
That sort of thing could be an interesting way to automate the system.
Regarding racial themes: these are cool ideas, but there should definitely be lots of non-racially themed options. Given that most of my guild play toons of all races, I wouldn’t want to be too heavy-handed with norn or asura-themed stuff. A Pact option would be an interesting alternative/addition.
www.getunicorned.com / northernshiverpeaks.org
For those who are concerned that their personal achievements aren’t celebrated in a guild hall or that that they don’t want to be subject to the choices of a single guild leader, I have to say “A guild, being an organization of many people, lead by a small sampling of those people, is meant to be a team, not a representation of any single team member.” If you feel that your personal achievements are more important than those of your guild as a whole or you don’t want to follow your guild’s leadership, you should leave that guild. It may even be the case that being part of any guild is not really your thing and that’s okay too.
Guild halls should bring people together. They can’t do that by providing monuments to individualism. They do it by offering and promoting group achievements. Guild leaders do impose their own points of view, because sharing vision towards a common goal is what leaders do. If you don’t want to opt into that dynamic, it is easy enough to opt out.
I want to address this as a guild leader because I don’t feel your comments represent my guild in the slightest. (And also, I earlier suggested allowing guild halls to have statutes to recognize the efforts of members, so it’s relevant to my proposal.)
As a guild leader, I have a few objectives.
- Create a community in which my members feel safe, supported, and comfortable
- Give members the opportunity and ability to do the things they like in the game
- Challenge my members to grow and improve and “pay it forward” with other guild members
This also includes recognizing member achievements. It feels GREAT when a colleague takes the time to thank you for your work or congratulate you on an effort you made. This same thing works for guilds. When I see my members doing good things – learning how to command in WvW, scouting or upgrading, mentoring new members, teaching new players dungeon paths, etc – I try to take the time to thank them both privately and publicly.
This also sets an example for my guild of the kind of behavior for which we strive. If the guild leader is constantly saying “so-and-so did this, thank you, you’ve done a great job” then it can help motivate others to do the same.
To my mind, guild halls with statues/portraits/members of the week/whatever assist me in this. I can make the callouts at certain points in time or in the MotD (which is often ignored), but having gigantic statues of the player along with a note, “Scouted home BL for 6 hours, ran all the upgrades?” Even better.
All of that is to say: sometimes personal achievements improve the guild just as much as group achievements and it’s totally appropriate to recognize individuals for their efforts.
www.getunicorned.com / northernshiverpeaks.org
As a suggestion, join a guild on your server even if you aren’t currently interested in WvW. You should have no problem finding an active guild on AR and you won’t be left out if your guild decides to do WvW. Also, if you later want to do WvW, you’ll be without your guild.
What fun is that?

I just wanted to express my concern that by trying to make everything part of an airship, we might be leaving out some cool ideas or functionality that people who haven’t already made up their minds might like.
I came into this discussion not knowing exactly what I wanted, so I’ve tried to keep an open mind about ideas. Some I like (SAB GH is AMAZEBALLS!!!) and some I do not (open world airships, primarily.)
There’s some great ideas in this discussion, but I feel like there’s also a lot of heavy-handed “your idea only works if you do it my way” going on and I find that upsetting.

I’m not saying there should not be airships. I’m saying there should be a lot more than just airships. We’ve exhausted a lot of pages talking about airships and I’d love to hear other ideas. Just my two cents. That’s all I have to say on the matter, I’ll go back to lurking now.

Because you would be able to have a all the things you mention as guild-ship.
You can have these things in a ship?
Super Adventure Box Guild Hall
Hollowed-out body of an Elder Dragon
Volcano
Underwater in a dome
The catacombs below Divinity’s Reach
Though to be fair, you very well could have a jumping puzzle on an airship. I don’t necessarily want to argue specifics, just keep in mind that limiting yourself to an airship means there’s lots of other potentially amazing ideas that aren’t being considered. Mine are examples, but I’m sure there are other far better ideas we haven’t heard yet.
Never start the creative process by narrowing your options.
