There was a lot of discussion about this in the Guild Hall CDI. I think there’s a chance the guild halls themselves will be instanced pieces of the open world. Meaning: you can walk to your guild hall’s entrance in Maguuma. When you step through the portal, you’re in your instance.
Think of it the same way Home Instances work.
www.getunicorned.com / northernshiverpeaks.org
SO I bought it based upon an assumption.
Also, I’ll be a bit helpful: Dulfy posts videos of the items usually within hours of them being available in the store. Next time, instead of assuming and being upset when you are wrong, do a little research first.
www.getunicorned.com / northernshiverpeaks.org
The word lantern comes from the roots “lan” and “tern.” “Lan” is most specifically a network of computers but can be more widely used to mean something that is connected. In this case, it’s connected to a string. “Tern” is the suffix version of “turn,” meaning an item which is turned on by double-clicking in your virtual inventory.
It’s really quite simple.

I only suggest grinding EOTM for levels for experienced players looking to level their third or fourth toon. You can try it whenever you like, but just know that it’s a really awful way to play the game. (In my opinion, anyhow.)
You’ve probably heard from somebody that it’s the “best way to level” – this person probably has 2000 hours in the game and 5+ level 80s. Keep in mind that many people don’t understand the concept of giving different advice to people in different places.
I don’t tell my friends making minimum wage that they should try this $100 bottle of scotch, you know?
www.getunicorned.com / northernshiverpeaks.org
Hearts are an awful way to level up. They are both slow and boring.
EOTM is faster though arguably duller.
I would recommend leveling by exploring, gathering WPs, PoIs, and easy Vistas. Gather and kill along the way while doing every Dynamic Event you can and you’ll level quickly.
Get a few friends together and you’ll see more events and get more experience doing stuff.
Edit: I should mention if you’re only level 20, STAY AWAY FROM EOTM. You’ll hit 80 and know nothing about your class. The Guild Wars 2 subreddit has a ton of guides and suggestions as well.

Had another one, started about 4:45pm Seattle time. NA Unranked. Final score was 500-145 I think. My teammates seemed unfamiliar with even basic concepts like “stomp” or “stand on points” etc.
It was bad from our initial split when we sent 2 home, 2 to animal, and just me to mid. After I told them in chat I was going mid and one other guy said home.
www.getunicorned.com / northernshiverpeaks.org
Just queued with 3 guildies in Unranked on NA. Won 500-75 on Foefire. 5:15pm Seattle time. This account.
I have what I assume is pretty average MMR and was queuing with two players of probably above average and one who’s pretty kitten good.
The other group appeared to be a guild group, but terrible comp. I think they were trying a spike/focus thing and failed hard. They blamed an afk Mesmer, but he seemed to be active. Was nowhere near comparable skill level and we held a 2- or 3-cap basically the entire match.
Edit: match immediately afterward (around 5:30 PST) we lost 500-220 or something. It was obviously different skill levels, though not quite as much of a blowout.

Zerker gear and support are not mutually exclusive. I think a lot of us thought, initially, that you chose between the “new trinity” of damage, control, and support. In reality, it works best if EVERY player focuses on ALL THREE of those.
All players should deal good damage.
All players should have control skills and know when to use them.
All players should bring support skills to help their teammates.
Support is a VERY important part of this game now, and asking for a larger role for support is a pretty clear indicator that you don’t have a deep understanding of how the game works. That’s fine, not everybody needs to have a PhD in GW2… but that’s why you get all these responses you don’t like.
It’s sort of like saying football would be better if you could just run the ball because I’m tired of all this passing and I like playing running back.

I can’t really agree with this. I mean, if you guys are as serious about PvP as you say you are it would make more sense to ‘police’ yourselves a bit and keep the atmosphere positive. You’ll never be rid of casual players as long as PvP reward tracks > PvE content.
Hi. So as somebody who does police language – within my guild – I’d love to know how you think players can do this? Other than just yelling back or, as has been mentioned several times now, using the report function.
We can’t kick toxic jerks from Heart of the Mists, so unless you have a constructive, realistic suggestion, maybe let’s blame the toxic jerks for the toxicity and not the entire community?
Just like we’ll never be rid of PvE casuals, we’ll also never be rid of PvP tryhards.
www.getunicorned.com / northernshiverpeaks.org
Protip if you’re really bad: watch streams. watch help videos ( of top players only, like srsly, there are some deep aids videos on yt telling you to kill bosses first. dont do that
I had two players go straight to boss on Forest to kill “so the enemy can’t steal.” I was so confused by it… like… what? That’s one major reason NOT to go for it right at the beginning! Took a bit, but I finally realizes that to them, “steal” means something completely different than it means to me. “Steal” to them is “the enemy kills the boss on our side.”
Needless to say, the two of us who went to mid were outnumbered and lost it right around the moment they rotated in. :-/
www.getunicorned.com / northernshiverpeaks.org
As always, the proper response is to report, block (if you like), and move on.
Chat in PvP is a bit more intense than in PvE because PvP games have a culture of their own which exists outside of GW2. That culture, like it or not, is brought into this game by players who are accustomed to it.
That doesn’t make it right, of course, and I make liberal use of the reporting function, but it’s not nearly as simple as blaming it on angry teenagers and unhappy people.
One of my guildies who really only PvEs in GW2 (but plays LoL and Smite and other PvP games) joined us last night and was yapping at somebody after a match. I had to explain to him that it’s not really that common in GW2 and he’ll likely get himself into trouble. He’s a really chill dude, I was surprised. But PvP brings that side out of even normally well-mannered people.

Because they are explorable zones with PoIs, Vistas, and Skill Points. And “100%” and “World Completion” are all-encompassing terms.
A better question is why they don’t require players to explore new zones when they come out as well, but I’m torn on whether that’s a good idea or not.
Not..it would make 100% an insurmountable task to a new player, a few expansions down the line.
(I’m hoping this new magumma map isn’t needed with the new xpac for 100% too..)
I meant new maps added to the core game. HoT exploration should be its own thing, perhaps by upgrading your icon from a yellow star to a blue one if you have both. Or something.
But Southsun, Dry Top, and Silverwastes should be part of world completion for your Gifts of Exploration, absolutely.
www.getunicorned.com / northernshiverpeaks.org
A good solution to this would be to make WvW map completion separate from Tyria’s map completion, and split the two Gifts of Exploration between them. Give WvW map completion it’s own special icon too.
That way, PvE’rs wouldn’t have to play a mode they don’t like, and WvW’rs wouldn’t have to trudge through Tyria for a Gift of Exploration if they don’t like that.
But of course, ArenaNet won’t even bother with that.
Except you need the gift of battle for legendaries which is only sold in.. wait for it…. WvW for badges.
…of which you EASILY get enough through achievement chests.
www.getunicorned.com / northernshiverpeaks.org
“Displeasing” is relative. WvW map completion may be displeasing to you and it may be enjoyable to me. I find gathering a full stack of each T6 mat to be displeasing, yet I don’t make threads here on the forums asking it to be removed from the process of creating a Legendary. Why? Because I can accept the requirements of the task set before me.
Again, the fact that one can play any game mode to get T6 mats and even sell extra stuff and buy those from TP gets conveniently omitted.
You’re missing the point entirely. The process of acquiring a Legendary may include both “pleasing” and “displeasing” elements. That’s subjective and based on the player. They shouldn’t remove part of the process simply because some players dislike it.
www.getunicorned.com / northernshiverpeaks.org
This is a hilariously bad argument, as was the earlier statement you made that the game is 92% open world PvE.
As for 92% of PvE, see another poster’s calculations above. 92% or not, only an oblivious player would disagree that PvE is the main game mode which got most content and most updates.
I don’t imagine you visit the WvW subforum often, but WvW players are well aware of this fact, thank you.
As for hilarity, I’m simply making the same “logical” conclusions as the ones defending the current system here. If something from the Mists counts as “world”, then what about the other parallel worlds in the Mists? What about Southsun, Dry Top, Silverwastes? What about the moon above our head? What about Earth, since we from Earth know that Tyria is not the only inhabited planet? Why it tells us “100% world completion” if all those locations haven’t been explored by us?
I’m not sure where your inability to refrain from hyperbole and strawman assassination comes from, but I’ve said previously that new maps SHOULD count for world completion. Earth and the moon should not.
I can respect people who argue that challenge-reward balance is fine in this achievement (“Legendaries should be acquired through legendary feats”).
Your attitude toward players who think WvW map completion should count is anything but respectful.
I cannot, however, take serious the arguments of something being less displeasing as long as it is “optional”, or arguments of someone deserving to suffer in a video game because they themselves suffered more, or arguments which appeal to common sense but omit the places where it currently fails to work.
“Displeasing” is relative. WvW map completion may be displeasing to you and it may be enjoyable to me. I find gathering a full stack of each T6 mat to be displeasing, yet I don’t make threads here on the forums asking it to be removed from the process of creating a Legendary. Why? Legendaries have clear requirements. I can choose to complete them or I can choose not to complete them.
When you say you are “forced” to do things in a game, I can only laugh. Forced to grind for a title? A TITLE?
The point is that we each have different goals, interests, and motivations. If you expect for us to respect yours, you should try harder to respect ours.
www.getunicorned.com / northernshiverpeaks.org
Because completing something means you did all of it, not 80%.
Oh… So since all borderlands and battlegrounds in the Mists should count for “all of it”, how about requiring us to do PvE map completion on all of the 51 servers, and not just one of them? Because completing something means you did all of it, not 1,96%. And yeah, add all the new zones too.
This is a hilariously bad argument, as was the earlier statement you made that the game is 92% open world PvE.
In the end, there will be no agreement on this subject. You’ll continue to make wild claims like this whenever the thread pops up and we’ll continue to avoid posting what we really think for fear of infractions.
Edit: I should note that the only thing keeping me from my third Legendary right now is WvW map completion. I’m on NSP and need vistas in both side keeps on green BL. Soooooo… it’s basically impossible. I just need to wait.

I think it depends somewhat on the context. If you’re joining the group to do content right now, I think it’s okay. For example, if I’m training new guild members on a dungeon and we have space, I might open up an LFG and say “Training for ACp1 – must join [MEGA] voicechat – recruiting for guild, but all welcome.” That could probably work.
If it’s just an LFG that’s opened to try to quickly get members – join the party, get a guild invite, leave the party – I think that’s LFG abuse.
I’m hoping ArenaNet’s increased focus on guilds means we’ll have better recruiting methods in HoT.
www.getunicorned.com / northernshiverpeaks.org
I saw screenshots of an Engy hitting for like 1.3M on Flamethrower auto-attack. That’s the weapon that really needs a nerf.
Edit: also, F skills SHOULD do more damage. You have to move your fingers further to press them so it requires more skill. This is why elite skills should one-shot everything, the 0 key is really far from your hand, it’s the highest skillfloor in the game.
www.getunicorned.com / northernshiverpeaks.org
Conditions are already highly effective for WvW roaming and lots of solo content so straight up buffing the damage isn’t a solution.
It’s almost as if the game is balanced across a variety of modes and narrow-minded players insist that balance should be perfect for their mode, to kitten with everybody else…
(Note: I play instanced PvE, open world PvE, WvW, and sPvP. I have 80s of every class. The balance in this game isn’t perfect, but most classes perform well in most content. Necro is probably hurting the most, but Mesmer is my “Anet fix plz” class of choice.)
www.getunicorned.com / northernshiverpeaks.org
I don’t mean to defend the OP, but it doesn’t look like the Warrior had much in the way of Might stacked. If you look at the Retaliation damage he takes, you can see the enemy Power… 2634 by my calculation. (But I could have done that incorrectly.) That’s a very achievable number without might stacks if you’re running the right food, sharpening stones, maybe with some guard stacks.
So while the OP is still a troll, enemy Warrior could have just been running Soldiers gear with an Intelligence sigil and got lucky.

We had a guy on our team be honest and tell us it was his first PvP match. Another team member (and not a guildmate) told the other team it was his first match, so I think he had a pretty rough go of it. We won, though.
Not saying that matchmaking is perfect, but what if that was the best option for him without what could be considered a ‘unreasonable’ queue time? A bit worrisome there.
As long as the length of queue is part of the equation (and I don’t think that in itself is a bad thing, no one wants to wait to enjoy a game) that will account for a portion of the matchmaking issue.
This may have very well been the case. We won that match handily, iirc (by over 100 points), so I think he was matched with us to pull our rating down. That said, it’s the semi-regular blowout matches that concern me more.
www.getunicorned.com / northernshiverpeaks.org
My matchmaking seemed pretty off last night. I kept getting matches that were 500-100 (or less). Since the weekend, really, I’ve seen lots of new players who have no business being paired with or against me and my guildmates. We’re not great, but it’s pretty unfair.
We had a guy on our team be honest and tell us it was his first PvP match. Another team member (and not a guildmate) told the other team it was his first match, so I think he had a pretty rough go of it. We won, though.
But yeah, Justin: if you want an example of somebody with average skill (at least I’d bet I’m of average skill, I’m certainly not top end) getting matches with VERY new players for some reason or another, feel free to look at my games last night/since this weekend.
www.getunicorned.com / northernshiverpeaks.org
Making all conditions more powerful doesn’t fix the basic problem that they are damage over time and nearly all enemies can be burst down very quickly. Conditions will be more useful when encounters last more than 10-15 seconds.
Perhaps someday we’ll have raids and conditions will be very important.
Also, go play WvW or PvP. Your condi builds will really shine.

It’s more that I don’t hold numbers in my head and then my guildies start comparing MF levels and I want to check while running around. Something that’s relevant once a day and more likely to be contemplated while standing still should be the part you scroll to.

Mutual admiration here, pdavis. You bring up some really good points.
On the other hand, it’s comments like this that lead many guild leaders astray:
The only way to fix this at this point is for ArenaNet to add new content.
As a guild leader, I take on certain responsibilities for my guild. These may vary slightly based on the type of guild, but it should be something like this:
- I will put together a like-minded group of people who can happily co-exist, even when I’m not around to keep an eye on them
- I will find players of varying experience levels, and sufficient players of each, so that beginners have other beginners (or vets who don’t mind doing newer-player stuff) to play with and pros have other pros for higher-end content. (This is, personally, where my guild could currently be better and is the focus of our current recruiting drive.)
- I will constrain my guild’s size and growth based on my ability to personally get to know each and every member of my guild. As such, we will always be a smaller guild.
- I will enforce a set of rules and standards of behavior such that all members of my guild are comfortable being themselves. While I am personally a pretty standard straight white male, I recognize that gaming can be hostile for women, LGBT players, etc., and I will do everything possible to make my guild a safe place for all.
Basically, all of the above serves one purpose: happy members have fun. Members who have fun keep logging in.
Contrary to what I’m hearing from most guilds, my guild is growing. In fact, we were growing so fast late last year I put a roster freeze in place. I would only invite new members if an existing member knew them for at least a few months, either in GW2 or another game. We’ve since started recruiting again, though “recruiting” for us is a post here on the forums, one on /r/guildrecruitment, and saying “we’re recruiting” if anybody asks. I don’t /map recruit as a matter of principle.
So no, you don’t need new content above and beyond what we’re getting to have a successful guild. What you need are members who care about the game and perhaps more importantly each other. We even have some members who don’t play much but log into Teamspeak every day to hang out. We built a community, not just a list of dungeon run partners, so it’s strong enough to survive the dry times.
Anyway, more advice when I know what advice to give.

I have a question for you. I’m going to lightly suggest that you really think about this for a bit (as in “more than 5 minutes”) before answering because this is important. (Side note: I’m really surprised you’re getting all this advice but nobody asked this question yet.)
Why is your guild dying?
You can’t fix the problem if you don’t know why it’s broken. Are people leaving the game? Why? Are people still playing the game but leaving your guild? Why?
I have a lot of advice I could give, but without knowing why your guild is struggling, I can’t offer you good advice on how to help it.

Map capacity is exactly the same for all tiers. The fact lower tiers aren’t reaching it very often does not mean the larger servers have larger capacity.
There is no way it is the same, I have played on multiple servers and we have done headcounts for the map while qued..
The lower tiers have worse ques than T1…
This is one of the crazier theories I’ve heard. It would be a pretty simple confirmation from ArenaNet if once of them wants to poke their head in…?

Well, you put up a blatantly hyperbolic statement that is an obscene exaggeration of sliver of truth, and say “Don’t tell me I’m wrong”.
What sort of response did you expect? If you want intelligent answers, try asking intelligent questions.
Yeah, the proper way to approach this would be like so:
“Dodge doesn’t seem to work for me. Am I supposed to be able to dodge everything? For example, the Spider Queen in Kessex Hills seems to be able to cocoon me even if I’m dodging.
If dodge doesn’t work on all attacks, what’s the point?"
You’re welcome to have your opinion, but when you start off by saying “don’t tell me I’m wrong” and calling a core game mechanic “useless,” you’re going to get some flak.
tl;dr if you want helpful answers, ask a question.

I had a match last night with a guy who was turning with a keyboard button (walk, stop, rotate in place, continue walking) and a thief who started by asking who was “protecting home.” When I suggested that leaving a person on home the entire map wasn’t a great strategy, he spent the rest of the match blaming me that we were losing.

Don’t worry, OP, you’re just getting bad advice. I think Warrior is a staple of dungeon parties for Banners of Strength and Discipline, but you only need one Warrior for that. My parties look like this, if I can control it.
1. Warrior (banners and Phalanx Strength if I don’t trust my team to stack enough might)
2. Engineer for vuln stacking
3. Elementalist for fire fields, DPS, and Ice Bow
4. Usually a Guardian for reflects and blinds (and sometimes other boons like stabo), but this is sometimes a Thief for trash runs and because a lot of my guild runs Thief
5. I don’t worry too much about this spot
My guild has tons of players who play Thief, Mesmer, and Ranger, so a lot of times that’s what we have in slot #5. If I take duplicate professions, I prefer for it to be Ele.

If a word is misused but the message transfer is complete and successful does it really matter?
The word means what it means to the community based on context – but if the message is clear then why does it matter if we do or don’t misuse it?
This is a good question and much bigger than this specific case. For example, Microsoft recently announced “HoloLens” and “Windows Holographic,” technologies which (based on name) would appear to be holograms.
They are not holograms.
Does it matter? Many would say “no,” they sort of feel hologram-like, and “augmented reality” is a terrible term, so this is a way to get the public excited about something. Personally, I think it’s a very bad idea for people who know better to willfully mislead the public about important technological breakthroughs. It’d be like Intel creating a “QuantumCPU” that doesn’t actually qualify as a quantum computing device.
But yeah, I think “meta” is okay so long as everybody realizes it’s just short-hand and doesn’t mean precisely what the dictionary definition says in this particular context.
