Difference between PvE and PvP modes

in Players Helping Players

And what’s the advantage of gaining ranks at PvP over PvE (or vice versa)?
Sorry about asking, I’ve read wiki, but unfortunately there is not so much detailed information about this.

Gaining ranks in PvP is basically bragging rights. As you gain rank and glory you are getting unique armor and weapon skins as well as different titles you can wear. You will not get any advantage by doing this apart from looking cooler than others.

Another rule is that PvE items and PvP items can’t be mixed. So unlocked PvP gear is only available in PvP. While acquired PvE gear is only usable in PvE and WvW.

No

Current PvP maps are tuned for 5-8 players per team.

WvW maps (3 identical borderland 1 eternal battlegrounds) are huge in comparison and there are several hundred players battling.

Item trade by mail works with people you trust. I trust my guild mates, we use it as intended.
If I want something other than that, then I’ll use the trading post.
If you try to use the mail system for unintended use (trading) and you get scammed, the only thing you can blame is yourself.

In PvE you are exploring the world with your character.
In PvP you are fighting against players having no advantage over others.
In WvW (which is a PvE, PvP hybrid) you are fighting against players in siege like events with your PvE character.

Looking at the TP does not require any NPC. You simply press ‘O’ and there you have it. I don’t see a reason for moving the NPCs.

And taking it out would only cause more annoyance. Because you get loot, and some of the loot I personally store in the bank. Yes, it could wait, but if I die, the extra 20 second of banking and TP items retrieval doesn’t change a thing.
If players stand still before an NPC hours long, the problem is with the player, not the system.
You should encourage the player (not harass him) to do things more efficiently, like go the nearest tower and use TP there.

Yes, because this is WvW, you can’t take 2-5 minutes buying your next lvl equipment from the trading post. If you want that then leave the WvW buy it, then come back. Because the time you stood still you did so much damage to your team, that the rest of the player base could never overcompensate. Never mind that the same thing probably goes on the opponent team as well.

How often do you get a green item? I got a truckload of it, others got a truckload of it, there are over 500 offers of green items, why should it sell for more then 1 silver?

Just throw them in the forge, that’s what I do… If they sell for less than 2 or 3 silver, I don’t bother.

I don’t have a problem with it I’m just stating that green is really common. And scarcity defines the value. So a lot of 1-2 silver value items mean a lot of 1-2 silver coins. And yes, you can also ask Zommoros to do something with them

Honestly, I wish they would add fishing, but I’d rather it be an interesting little mini-game with fun rewards!

That could be fun

I imagined a scenario where you stand on the shore where you can fish, with an asura high tech fishing machine. And you need to input with what bait do you fish, how thick the thread is etc. And if you make a bad combination for example, then a hostile barracuda could pull you underwater and initiate a fight
Or you could pull out a skale or river drake.

I kind of agree and disagree at the same time.
It’s unfair to compare GW1 with 2. I think the introduction of WvW made it impossible to keep the previous skill recharge times and combat speed in general (even now I found myself spiked to death a few times). The other major difference is the way death works. Even in sPvP it takes longer to get from A to B, especially in WvW.

But I too would like to see more customization (this will most likely be addressed via additional weapons and skills in future expansions), even if it’s only just choosing between two skills or two minor traits for a slot, that would at least feel that it’s not just a general build.

Why no direct trade?

I disagree. By not having personal trade it is harder to scam others. And what happens when you get scammed, you run to the mods to get your item back, which takes time and effort they can put somewhere else. By having a unified trade system they only need to manage that. So you either trust the other player or use trading post.

The logic of exploits

Zogrim,

So I deserve to be banned for asking if something is in fact an exploit? If it is, great, I won’t do it…but how am I supposed to know exactly?

This logic is flawed. I’m just supposed to know based on common sense right? In a game where I can sell a glob of goo, on a trading post that magically flies above my head, from anywhere in the world, I’m supposed to use common sense?

You can’t assume everyone understands what is, and isn’t an exploit in a complex game. People should have the freedom to ask, or find out, without being threatened with a ban.

Yes you do.

Let me clear things up a bit:

exploit – this is something specific, e.g. there is a spot in Lion’s Arch if you stand there, you will get 1 gold each second (I made this up).
If you ask it like this: “Hey guys, there is the jeweler station in Lion’s Arch and if I stand at north east corner I will get 1 gold. Is this intended?” Then you ensure that a very wide range of people will know about this, and by knowing it they CAN exploit it.

But if you found out about the aforementioned exploit and ask it like this:
“Is it okay for me to get 1 gold/second if I just stand idly?” Then you are not discussing an exploit, you are discussing the system itself. And if the response is “No, you cannot gain money via standing still.”, then you should pretty much get the idea, that the thing you found is an exploit.

Fear of getting banned for swearing, exploiting, accused of using bots, account hacking, credit card info on file…it all adds up.

  • Do not swear.
  • Do not use exploits.
  • Do not use third party add-ons (bots).

If ANet bans for the above reasons, then the one banned most likely deserved it.

Hacked accounts got banned in order to protect the one hacked.

People are complaining about free EXP now?… that’s nuts…

As you go up levels into higher zones it gets harder to accidentally get silver or gold participation without actively engaging the event. Sometimes you still get a bronze for killing guys while an escort is passing. But whether you like it or not that was helpful to the event.

Take your “free” exp and move along please.

Maybe I should get a bot to play for me as well ya? Or hire a kid to play my account.

The whole point of the game it to be involved. If I’m gaining levels for simply standing around, why would I bother even starting the game?

That view seems a little extreme to me.

Why do you care about a number so much? It should not have this much of an impact, you can have fun and get involved. (This was so good in GW1, you could only get to lvl 20 and that was done in the tutorial.)

WvWvW que time

Posted by: zogrim.6925

zogrim.6925

Qued uplast night and went on my way leveling/explorIng. Never got in. As a matter of fact, i only got to Play wvwvw once. Is there a trick to get in?

I have queued 30 minutes before a guildie who logged on and then queued and he got in first.

Either the queues are incredibly buggy (which i doubt since this is the most major part of their game), or they have some elitist mentality about people jumping the line because of gear or level or time played, and if thats the case, so much for the only thing to do at level cap for those who only have a bit of time each night to play.

So you say that in a game based on everyone being equal the reason for the weird mechanic of WvW queue is because the game differentiates between people?

This is my biggest complaint as well. I’ve lost the norn fighting arenas due to an event. (A single meteor shower completed the whole heart.) And sadly the arenas cannot be used by those who completed the task

And to counter your points:

  • Events are registered by participating in it, one of the basic concept of the game was to remove the usual talk to him to start something that you already could do.
  • PvP experience AKA Glory does unlock PvP exclusive armor skins.
  • The whole game is about supporting others as a single player could not achieve most things in the game.

It’s a bit of a catch 22 really. I don’t like having to talk to people to start quests, yet I don’t like quests to reward me half way through for something I didn’t even do.

If you think about it, it’s like getting a university diploma. I need to physically walk into the building, register, and put in four years of work. Walking down the street and getting handled a diploma for the class of 2012 just because I happen to be there is confusing, and devalues the meaning.

I see your point, and I also experienced the same thing (once I got a bronze reward for an event that took place on the other side of the map).
For me this seemed more like a bug. There might be some issues determining event ranges of participation, but for me this happened only a few times.

Especially #1 and #2.

I agree with #1 (ranked system) absolutely!
And I believe a ranking system would solve your issue #2… Good teams fight good teams, whether the good team is a bunch of experienced single players (PUG) or a good premade. When ranking teams, inflate the rating of premade teams to ‘balance’ them for their improved communication (vent, etc.).

And ‘suggestion Forum’? I have not seen one. This seems like the best possible forum in which to have this discussion.

It’s not only random event reward.
We get drowned in EXP in GW2.

That’s something that causes lots of troubles IMO.
(Just look at all the threads about missing endgame content)

If i were to design EXP:

  • Events need to be “registered” – for example by talking to an NPC
  • No EXP for crafting, you only gain crafting levels
  • PvP EXP unlocks special PvP things, should not affect PvE
  • Supportive actions / Teamplay gets rewarded with EXP

The treads about missing “endgame” content are plain ridiculous. I have yet to read a single thread that really talks about a real issue, without omitting half of the game in the process.

And to counter your points:

  • Events are registered by participating in it, one of the basic concept of the game was to remove the usual talk to him to start something that you already could do.
  • PvP experience AKA Glory does unlock PvP exclusive armor skins.

The maps we’re playing WvW on are HUGE, which is cool, but only having one waypoint to spawn back at and having to run all the way back across the map to get to the battle is really quite aggravating, and makes for some very dull pvp.

Actually there are 4 respawn points that players could use. The problem is that keeps usually aren’t upgraded to that level.

Researched in what way? Cause if you mean actually finding them then yes, personally I have and I still say it’s far. Or researched as in the actual disntance you have to travel to get to battles over objectives because that kinda proves that a faster way to get around the map is required (in my personal opinion)

Sorry, my original wording was misleading so edited my post.
What I’m saying is that on every WvW map, there are 3 keeps. And keeps could be upgraded to have a waypoint, thus ease traveling.

Why are there empty zones?

Because it’s a level 80 zone and the game has been out for 2 weeks.

The majority of players have not had time to get up to level 80, or haven’t wanted to focus entirely on levelling. And a lot of those who have gotten to level 80 have done it through crafting, so they probably haven’t actually gone to that zone, or aren’t spending a lot of time there.

Give it time and the high level areas will fill up as more people reach those levels, then there will be more people to defend waypoints and less problems with them being contested.

Exactly!

And about contested waypoints i agree they kinda suck but they are also helpful in terms of finding out about cool events :P

Okay, that’s nice

You’re not “exploring” a place you’ve already been. You clearly haven’t been to the development joke that is the Orr zones yet. Low population, every Waypoint contested, sent back and forth constantly. You’re forced to run around places you’ve already “explored”

This is an MMO. In this game that translates to: You CAN NOT solo clear a whole area. You will need massive amount of players to keep order in the world.
